There is so much to like about “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.

He’s a winner. He has charisma. Teammates love the guy. He is resilient, and the dude is just freaking deadly when the chips are down. Lethal, in fact.

And then there is Jameis’ football intelligence. Folks raved about him at the NFL Scouting Combine. Even his new offensive coordinator, Dirk Koetter, stated the way Jameis broke down the Bucs offense during interviews, Jameis will be Koetter’s new standard for smarts.

When discussing NFL readiness, SI.com NFL analyst Doug Farrar sort of begrudgingly agreed that Jameis is ready but noted his film too often resembles Bears quarterback bratty Jay Cutler.

“I think there is a lot to like about Jameis Winston the quarterback and Jameis Winston in that particular offense,” Farrar said of Jameis playing for Koetter. “Because, [the Bucs] do want to run the ball. They do have two gi-normous receivers in Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans. And Jameis is pretty decently mobile. He has a fantastic arm. He can read the field pretty well.

“My issue with him when we were doing pro comparisons, I compared him to Jay Cutler. Two things sort of crossed there: Winston can be wildly inaccurate and highly interception-prone and the second thing is, he has too much faith in the torque of his arm. He doesn’t throw from his body up. Throwing is like pitching, you throw from your lower body up. He gets out of whack mechanically at times and Culter has been in the league 10 years and no one has broken him yet that you cannot throw the ball into those little tiny windows with three defenders around.”

All fair points. Here’s the thing: You can change mechanics. When NFL Network aired Jameis’ pro day at Tallahassee, you could tell his mechanics had changed since he quit throwing a baseball. So that element is being repaired, or is on the repair.

The second thing Farrar rightly pointed out was that Jameis is fearless when throwing. He had mind-boggling, threading the needle between three defenders. Jameis likely could get away with that in college — and he did — but not so much in the NFL.

Remember when Jameis told Koetter he wasn’t scared of making any throw and Koetter replied, you should be? Jameis is being coached up on that, too.

I get it…..you throw out his great season and talk about all the int’s from last year but jay cutler? i find it very odd that not having played in a prostyle offense no one is talking about how many interceptions mariota could throw as if it’s beyond comprehension….but oh well i cannot wait for the regular season, comparisons all go out the window when training camp starts

What a pic!! Roflmao! I already like jay more..laser cat cutler!..yeah, ridiculous comparison..jay has no conscience when throwing..jameis is the total opposite..i can go with a handful of throws that jameis shouldnt have made..all the others cldve been negated if refs actually called interference ever vs fsu (i think a memo was sent out after clemson) or miscommunication or effort ..and whats with the “jameis had the best team and didnt play anybody” b.s.? Rashad earliest skill player drafted outside of kelvin? The draftees of teams fsu played are most ridiculous..another ridiculous narrative proven wrong with factual evidence. Sound familiar? 🙂

We can only hope Lutz’s QB will not fall on his belly come autumn

  6. BucFan20 Says:

You don’t talk about Mariota because he is not our QB. EVERYONE has said to drop it on this site remember?

  7. Buc-A-New Says:

I think JW may throw some picks early but I truly believe that he will come to the realization that Every CB he is throwing at now is better than Any CB he threw at in college. That is when he will become truly special. All of us Gators fans arent bad.

  8. TheShaz Says:

I want a GUNSLINGER! I want a Bret Favre, fearless and playing the game with the energy of a 10 year old.

Yeah Favre threw his fare share of INT’s. But they were mostly forgotten when overshadowed by those mind-blowing throws we all talk about.

  9. Mort Says:

Can you please drop this insane “America’s Quarterback” nonsense? It’s just absurd. Take off your pewter colored glasses, nobody outside Tampa gives a rats ass about the bucs or jameis at this point.

  10. Espo Says:

I mostly just remember Favre bitching a lot

That’s why like only 60 media outlets were at the bucs rookie mini camp. Yea I can see why you feel “nobody outside of Tampa” give a crap about Winston. I am sure they were here to see Ali Marpet and our 7th round fullback. You are so intelligent and astute with your observations.

    america’s qb = tom brady!

    jameis christ is our qb

Legend of Lutz??? I don’t get it… Guess I missed something.

“Legend of Lutz??? I don’t get it… Guess I missed something”

Avila..many Bucs live in the gated community including Dungy….before the fancy name in was Lutz

so if Jamesi buy a home there he’ll be know as “The Legend of Lutz”

    No.

It’s just absurd. Take off your pewter colored glasses, nobody outside Tampa gives a rats ass about the bucs or jameis at this point.

    Couldn’t be more wrong.

  17. Jason McLaurin Says:

Can we please stop talking about 18 int. He threw a lot of those because of planting issues due to that ankle injury. He was also forcing throws in a predictable offense with the Seminoles. I mean we never ran the ball because there was no running game. Winston gets better as the talent around him gets better which he has a better talent pool in Tampa than he had in Tallahassee.
