Joel Glazer Says He’s “Comfortable” With Jameis Winston

Team Glazer talks to Joe about the question of the year

Joe got a chance to pepper Team Glazer with questions this evening at the Arizona Biltmore hotel in Phoenix.

Of course, Joe asked about Jameis Winston.

As Bucs fans remember, Lovie Smith said at the NFL Scouting Combine that he was “comfortable” — at that moment — with Jameis Winston being a face of his franchise, if the Bucs draft Winston.

So Joe asked Joel Glazer whether he was comfortable, too, one month after Lovie’s comments.

“You know, we spent a lot of time with Jameis. We spent a lot of time with Marcus Mariota. There are other potential players that could be up there with the first pick. But yes, we as an organization are comfortable. We’re comfortable with Jameis,” Glazer said.

“We found both Jameis and Marcus to be impressive young men when we spent our time with them. Great success in college. Both academically very successful. Unbeliveable amount of work on both players and other potential players in this draft. We as an organization are comfortable.”

Man, it sure feels like Winston is the next Bucs’ quarterback.

  1. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What did you expect him to say?……No comment. We aren’t comfortable with Winston. We like Winston better than Mariota. Winston is our pick.
No responsible NFL executive is going to make a negative comment on any potential draftee before the draft….especially a QB and especially a high pick.

  2. thegregwitul Says:

Nice work, Joe. Winston or Mariota, it’s gotta be one of the two. If it’s Winston, I hope like heck he hires someone to monitor what gets posted on his Instagram account. No more of the shirtless pics, please and thank you.

  3. theodore Says:

    Bye, Mason

  4. Pickgrin Says:

“We’re comfortable with Jameis,” Glazer said.

That’s it. End of story – no more questioning. The pick is already in.

Winston is CLEARLY the more NFL ready QB and his style of play fits what the Bucs need in a QB perfectly. The ONLY question left was whether the team was concerned enough about his “off field issues” to not draft him.

That question has been resoundingly answered and #5 WILL BE YOUR NEW FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK!!!!

Awesome job Joe! You are the man for getting Joel Glazer to spit out that sentence.

Get ready for some exciting offensive football Bucs Fans.

“If we gonna do it – We do it BIG”

Welcome to Tampa Bay Jameis Winston. NOW I’m excited.

  5. Eric Says:

    Excellent work Joe.

  7. ADown88 Says:

    @TBBF

I disagree. They came out and said when they dropped out of the Hardy running that they were not comfortable with it. When it comes to a player with “character concerns” then there are reasons to say “we aren’t comfortable with X player” for PR reasons. If they found dirt on Winston that they believe will surface later, then they very well may say “we don’t feel comfortable taking him”. They clearly don’t feel that way about Winston. He is our guy.

  8. Skyline Crew Says:

Saw Winston was gaining weight back. Not good.

  9. Seminole Bill Says:

Seminole Bill is in favor of trading down in the draft, and here’s why (hear me out Joe):

    1. Picking Jameis/Marcus as #1 has several outcomes, only one of which is what we want. The odds that Jameis/Marcus becomes the next Manning/Brady are fairly low. It is more likely that Jameis/Marcus would be fair to poor, especially given the condition of the O-line.
    2. Trading down to a lower first round means we could select a D-lineman to complement McCoy and, get a quality O-lineman in the deal. Since one of the two would be an experienced player, our odds of success improve.
    3. Come back in 2016 and draft a QB, after re-building the O-line.

Instead of building the team around an uncertain QB, build it around our best player, McCoy. We won under Dungy and Gruden with defense, we can win that way again. Lastly, I have been a Buc fan long enough to remember the Bo Jackson disaster and never want to see that again. Play it safe, Lovie, and get something relatively certain out of this.

  10. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Pickgrin

I’m with you bro but could we lose the number five. I’ve heard rumors he’ll take #1 or perhaps 12.

I’d be OK with either…1 as the top pick but that would draw a lot of attention that he may not really want.

The number that makes the most sense is #12 since Fameis father was reportedly a huge Doug Williams fan.

I’d actually like to see Fameis in #12 and revive some great Buc memories!

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Adown88

You need to carefully read the quote from Glazer when asked directly if he was comfortable with Winston….sure he answered it but his answer included Mariota.

The real question….and Joe didn’t ask it is. “Are you more comfortable with Winston than Mariota?”…..and that question he would have answered….”We are comfortable with both”

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Listen….I think the pick will be Winston…but there was nothing in his answer that excluded Mariota…..if you read that you are exibiting wishful thinking.
Until he says…”We are selecting Winston” its still open.

  13. ADown88 Says:

    @TBBF

Of course he included the other prospects, because if he didn’t, it would imply that they are taking Jameis, which obviously they do not want to release yet.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

why did you not ask the important question?

“Are the Glazers comfortable with Lovie Smith as head coach???”

  15. Joseph Mamma Says:

I’m sure he was comfortable with Josh Freeman as well. These bozo’s have really low standards.

  16. Joe Says:

@Tampabaybucfan — Joe learned long ago that there are 100 ways to answer a question. Glazer could easily have said the team is still evaluating everyone evaded saying he’s comfortable with anyone.

  17. DallasBuc Says:

I just hope the Glazers are comfortable making this business decision for Lovie Smith. He is simply not competent to make this decision.

  18. Nick Says:

    @seminole Bill

This notion that by trading down we magically end up with 2 quality players needs to end right now. The most successful draft slot in the history of sports is Round 1, Pick 1.

  19. Rob Says:

Smokescreen! God, I’m gonna laugh when Marcus goes first to the Bucs or we trade the pick for multiple picks thus year and next (the better option). I’ll cheer for whoever we draft but tire of the daily boring unimaginative repetitive love note to Winston. Be more creative Joe. You are capable but seem unwilling to stop pleading for Winston.

  20. Ricky Bell Fan Says:

This doesn’t shed much light, which I was hoping to see something; anything that does. I don’t know about you guys, but I am getting reallll tired of the Bucs treating this like some poker game where they need to hold their cards so close to the vest. They’re handling it like a true second-rate organization by acting so secretive. Veiling everything.

  21. ben Says:

I hope that is all crap .. can’t believe bucs would want a thug as face of our team

  22. Buc1987 Says:

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Everyone at the owners meeting thinks the Bucs are taking Jameis…
Everyone at the combine thinks the Bucs are taking Jameis…
Every mock draft in the nation has the Bucs taking Jameis…

    End of discussion!

  24. StPeteBucsFan Says:

OK we’ve beat this to death. So I”m going to continue my lobbying for #12.

Culverhouse blew the last time we had a talented QB wearing #12 and Williams had to go somewhere else to win a SB.

Perhaps Fameis can come in and erase those bitter memories of losing Williams and revive the very first Bucs glory days.

  25. Pickgrin Says:

SPBF – Why should Jameis worry for one second about what that association to a # means in the minds of fearful and/or superstitious Bucs fans?

This is a new era. April 30th represents the true turning point for this franchise – and all the old fears and bad remembrances need to be let go of.

Jameis Winston represents hope for this franchise. He represents the chance to almost always have a chance to win. Any game – any opponent. Down by 11 points with 6 minutes to go? – It aint over. Down by 22 in the middle of the 3rd quarter – it ain’t over. Winston can get hot down the stretch and comeback to win almost any game as he did numerous times in College. He is clutch. He is $. He will win a lot of football games for this franchise.

And he will probably do it wearing #5. Dude can wear whatever # he wants – but I’m betting he will keep #5. And I have absolutely no problem with that.

  26. Senor Mofo Says:

Wow. This is what it has come to.

Apparently any statement that isn’t an outright indictment OF Winston should now be construed as a ringing endorsement FOR Winston.

  27. Sick of the debate Says:

Who gives a shiz about how fat Winston is. As long as he isnt obese, im not concerned. Freeman wasnt exactly skinny in his 1st or 2nd year, but he lost all that weight and I think it cost him his swag.

Point is, he played at FSU with a little extra chub and it never slowed him down. So, if it aint broke, dont fix it.

    Go Bucs!!!!

  28. Eric Says:

    I like the 12 idea.

I remember when Doug came in. That team really rallied around him. A bit inconsistent but I always felt like we had a chance with Doug.

  29. WalkdaPlank Says:

You can keep lying to yourself 87 all you want. I THINK Jameis is the pick even though I HOPE it is Mariota. But no need to make stuff up.

  30. Howard Cosell Says:

Pro draft boards have Leonard Williams as #1 prospect (BPA),
and your dream man Winston as #2. Mariota is down at #7.
We have a need at both positions but I think we’ll go Winston
because he wants to be here more and he’s a better raw talent.
Wanting to be here is big right now with L&L. I think Mariota
came off as wishy-washy homesick for Hawaii.

If it was up to me i’d take Williams at #1.
And so might Lovie. Think about that.

  31. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Pickgrin

“SPBF – Why should Jameis worry for one second about what that association to a # means in the minds of fearful and/or superstitious Bucs fans?”

Oh I can think of a few. If you’re going to be the “face of the franchise” you SHOULD care about what the fans of that franchise think!

It’s ultimately the FANS who pay your million dollar salary! If you don’t respect your fans then scrw you as an athlete. This is why I’ve always loathed Warren Sapp. What goes around comes around and finally Warren got his.

Now that big loudmouth can disappear.

This is an area where Fameis desperately needs to repair his tattered rep off the field. He should absolutely CARE about the fans!!!

Football is entertainment. Some of you are easily entertained. Just win and that covers it all. I have higher standards. The Lightning win without jackasses! Hockey is just as emotional and physical as football. DB55 won without being a jackass. He took kids overseas and cared greatly about the fans as did WD and Alstott and others.

If I knew Fameis didn’t give a rats arse about us you can bet I’d stop cheering for the Bucs.

  32. WalkdaPlank Says:

    @Howard Cosell

Lovie’s hands will be tied, IMO. Gotta be a QB, unless a colossal trade offer is made.

  33. HawaiianBuc Says:

Everyone can break down his statement all you want, and bend it to say whatever you want it to. Fact of the matter is, I would be blown away if we don’t draft Winston. It just seems like all signs are pointing in that direction. If it is to be believed, it appears that his off the field transgressions have been checked off. At this point, I’m looking for one credible mock draft having us draft anyone but Winston. Again, this is Lovie we are talking about so nothing is set in stone, but it would sure be mind blowing if it weren’t Winston. (of course the anti-Winston crowd will squint their eyes and close their ears enough to hear what they want, but even they know what appears to be happening).

  34. Senor Mofo Says:

I’d be “thrilled” with $30 million in the bank, but I’d be “comfortable” with $5 million.

I’d be “ecstatic” waking up next to Mila Kunis, but I’d be “comfortable” waking up next to, well, pretty much any woman I’ve already had sex with (except for a few particular disasters).

The word “comfortable” is high-level power-speak for “wouldn’t be the best option, but probably wouldn’t turn it down.”

When the Glazers say they would be “thrilled” or “ecstatic” with Winston, you’ll have something to triumphantly write about, Joe(s).

But they will only say that after they draft him, if he is indeed the pick.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

About 2 weeks from the draft. EVERYONE will have an idea that it’s going to be Jameis…

Some won’t like it. Some will kick, scream and protest, but I hope they will accept it.

Then I can go back to being my usual nice self and say I’m sorry to everyone I pissed off over the last 3 months.

“It’s a way of looking at that wave and saying, “Hey bud, let’s party!” – Jeff Spicoli

  36. Howard Cosell Says:

Geez, Joe’s going to have an orgasm when the Wiston pick is announced.
Makes me want to draft Leonard Williams…..but even so…..as much as
Joes QB love is creepy…..DE is easier to fix than QB. So even Howard,
MGMer, Johnny Football hater and believer in defense, has accepted
Winston as my football savior. God help us all.

  37. bucgator Says:

    I LOVE YOU GUYS

  38. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I appreciate the question being asked….and yes, he could have said we are still in the evaluation process…..I believe the man at his word that he is comfortable with Jameis….but…it is still a leap to assume that means he is automatically the pick. And, he wouldn’t answer but he could be more comfortable with Mariota.

Even Joe says….it sure “feels” like Winston is the next Bucs QB.

Many of the Winston supporters are saying Winston “is” the next QB…..even Joe won’t go there.

  39. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

Everytime Glazer complimented Winston, he included Mariota.

  40. Buc1987 Says:

WalkdaPlank …it feels good to be back to the old name doesn’t it?

Like taking a shower after doing yard work in the hot summer heat.

  41. WalkdaPlank Says:

Please, just end this nonsense. One month left till this is all finally gone.

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @bucgator

Thanks for the support….but I’m retired media (managed journalists) I’m not a journalist….but I am keenly aware of journalistic practices….

Joe has to walk a thin line with his questions and I respect that. He can’t allienate Buc officials with questions that put them on the spot or lay follow-up questions that corner them. I’m not speaking for Joe….but he has a limited number of sources and needs to proceed with respect as I’m sure he does.

I would have asked which one they were more comfortable with….but I wouldn’t have gotten an answer and they wouldn’t have appreciated the question knowing they couldn’t answer….

Joe got an answer to his question….I’m just stating the answer was “quaified” because the answer included Mariota.

Really not a fair assessment. First, Joe doesn’t think Team Glazer would have not “appreciated” that question. In fact, Joe suspects the opposite. Second, Joe has no concern about alienating Bucs officials. The website doesn’t work if Joe isn’t writing things like “whoever evaluated the offensive line entering last year needs to be locked in a cage until training camp.” Joe’s written that many times. Joe could give countless other examples. Lastly, Joe is interested in the most interesting content for himself and for readers. That’s the only thing that drove the way Joe asked this question. –Joe

Yeah 87. Would be nice for me too if Joe weren’t so adamant on keeping me “banned” lol

  44. Pickgrin Says:

SPBF – I imagine you are in the extreme minority who would care if Winston wears #5 as a Buccaneer. So how do you somehow turn that into “Famous doesn’t give a rats arse about us” referring to the fans of the Buccaneers? Jameis himself is a fan of the Buccaneers long before joining the team and he knows the history. Stop acting like him choosing to wear #5 for which he is known and has been so successful wearing – would be some kind of slap in the face to the fans. How ridiculous. You may have a problem with it – but just like having to begrudgingly accept that he will be the Bucs new QB – you are also going to have to accept whatever # he chooses to wear.

You will be cheering right along with the rest of the naysayers as soon as #5 starts proving why he is more than worthy of the #1 pick. Your “higher standards” will probably be out the Window when you see this kid laying perfect 45 yard bombs on Evans’ outstretched hands for TDs. LOL

  45. Rrsrq Says:

Did I not say #12 when some poster started a rumor about a jersey number change for Winston

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    5 & 12 are available….so no controversy……8 is taken…..might be controversy there….

  47. WalkdaPlank Says:

Forget the number, if I were Winston I would demand the old uniforms back (not really, but god do those uniforms look ugly).

  48. Pat Says:

Joe, why didn’t you trip him up and ask him point blank just on Mariota….that way let’s see if he even mentions Winston at all? Try again.

  49. Buc1987 Says:

And I had a lot of chance to talk to Tampa’s General Manager this past Thursday (at Mariota’s pro day) and what I was told was they have had two different people; private investigators digging deep into Winston’s past and doing a lot of homework on the guy. They’ve talked to about 75 people about his past, 75 sources and my feeling is their finding is that he’s a pretty good guy. At this point – I would be shocked; SHOCKED – if he was not the choice by Tampa.” -Gil Brandt

and on and on it goes. All the mocks are saying it’s Jameis. Everyone at the combine was pretty confident it’s going to be Jameis.

No one should be SHOCKED if we take Mariota. They might be proved wrong about their guess, but they certainly shouldn’t be shocked.

The only thing that would be shocking is if we took neither. That would rattle the media and the fan base, and make every Buccaneers fan question their allegiance to this team as well as the sanity of the organization.

A cross between Big Ben and Brett Favre. That’s what I have Jameis whittled down to in my mind.

    ======================================================

That’s what I’ve always thought about Winston. Closer to Big Ben in size and arm strength, maybe, but more like Favre in mechanics and actual playing style. Not a bad combo to have.

I think Mariota has elite technical and athletic skills that are rarely found, but there’s no guarantee that Mariota’s skills will translate into elite performance in the NFL.

The Bucs are in an enviable position for having this choice, and they are in an unenviable position for having to make this choice.

But at least, as fans, we’re going to have a QB that we can commit to and rally around, and hopefully the team can move forward from there and build the kind of team we dedicated fans deserve.

  89. bucgatOr Says:

Hey 87, I really do like you and can’t wait to Tailgate with you if I ever get back to Fla during Football season. I really do hope we take Winston for your sake because I am not sure you will recover if we don’t and I like you

  90. Pickgrin Says:

’87 – maybe it hasn’t been discussed – but the Favre comparison has been in my mind for awhile. Mainly because I see Jameis as fearless. A gunslinger. Good at buying time in or out of the pocket to make plays downfield – just like Favre was so good at.

  91. WalkdaPlank Says:

If you ask me, Winston is a Cam Newton clone. On the field and off.

And I mean an exact clone. Like Evans to Vjax.

  92. bucgatOr Says:

    @Walkda.
Cam is NOT good enough to make everyone around him better. Thank God for us.

  93. WalkdaPlank Says:

Newton took an atrocious Auburn team and made them look good for a year. He took an atrocious Carolina team and led them to the playoffs and a division title, twice. And a rookieof the year award to boot. I’ll take that.

  94. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is drunk & too tired to post tonight”

  95. WalkdaPlank Says:

And I HATE Cam Newton with a burning passion.

    HATE THE MAN.

  96. Buc1987 Says:

I hate Brees more than Cam.

I am UGA faithful, what Cam and his bastard teammate Nick Fairly did to us that night in 2010 will forever fill me with ill feeling towards him. It was just bad luck that he went to a division rival of my favorite NFL team.

But he is a damn good QB, and I hate saying that. I really do.

  98. Buc1987 Says:

I gotta go to bed. Gd night everyone.

  99. Bo Says:

Only unsophisticated goobers, which are most Bucs fans, would actually put any stock in this quote. What do you idiots expect him to say? the Glazers have been liars since they landed in Tampa…why do you believe them now?

  100. todd Says:

of course they are a new young qb sells tickets! $$$$$ = glazers

  101. P'cola Buc Says:

Nice to see the healing process has begun. Acceptance for Winston as the most probable pick is growing. The fan base will continue to reunite no matter who is chosen (except if it is not a QB). Witness the coversation begining to transform. Several posts are even discussing which number Winston might choose. He is more of a team player than to choose the number 1. #5 has poor associations with it. #12 possible because of his father’s favorite player Doug Williams. However he did look good with that #15 at the combine.

  102. Mariota Joe Says:

Let the train wreck begin to unfold.

  103. Skyline Crew Says:

With that headline and what the real story is made me think I has wondered on to the NY post. He is comfortable with Winston or Mariota at #1.

  104. Josh P Says:

    @SPBF

Only problem i have with the #12 is Dilfer & McCown wore it….Don’t wan’t to put that kind of jinx on any rookie coming into the league..If he wants to honor D. Williams because it was his dads favorite player he should wear the #17 which is what he wore when he won a Super Bowl with the Redskins..Plus it would be kind of a subtle honor to one of the greatest QB’s in FSU history Charlie Ward….

  105. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

“We spent a lot of time with Marcus Mariota. There are other potential players that could be up there with the first pick.”

Um I’m not getting how this part of the quote isn’t registering with some of you? Sounds to me like Winston is definitely in the mix for #1, but so are other players. I’m leaning towards things are still up in the air at One Buc Place about how they want to go. Unless of course you choose to disregard this as the smokescreen and take everything else in the article as the gospel of truth.

It’s a myth that we as season ticket holders and fans pay their salaries. Only a small part. Look at recent TV contracts and the announcement of there being no blackouts this year. That’s the first objective verification that broadcasting rights are the main money source and not fans. The first signs were lowering the percentage of tickets needing to be sold as well as the tarping of seats to lower capacity. Now, they are going elsewhere to mine more money based on how the Jags game in London will be broadcast this year.

I read nothing more into it than the Glazers are drafting a QB at 1. That said, some of you must be crushed that the Glazers didn’t personally attack Jameis like you do on a daily basis. The Glazers are business people first. I’ll bet that new fans will more than compensate for those who jump overboard and don’t think that isn’t a consideration for them.

Jameis has probably come to the realization that unless he plays for your team, everyone else is going to hate him. Has worked out pretty well for Kobe Bryant.
Unlike Kobe and Ben, he never had to payoff someone and he’s never been charged. Minor facts I know.

  108. Buc1987 Says:

BoltIsle…good points. I’ll also add that Buc’s tickets are some of the cheapest tickets in the NFL.
