Jameis Watch: Consensus

March 24th, 2015

jameis winston 1225Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

Yes, Joe is in Phoenix the next two days at the NFL Owners Meetings and hopes to bring back all sorts of cool Bucs content. Alas, Joe was beaten to one punch in Phoenix by none other than the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune.

While here, being the trooper he is, Kaufman has been hoofing it, mingling with all the movers and shakers of the NFL trying to come up with juicy nuggets and stories to follow. One thing Kaufman has found is Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is the rage of the conclave, and for all the right reasons.

In fact, it sure smells like Winston will line up behind center and bark plays this fall for your Tampa Bay Buccaneers, baby.

This is not the first time Kaufman has stated such a thing. His research on the Bucs’ No. 1 overall pick, once led him to say in a TBO.com podcast that “you just don’t hear” anyone discussing the Bucs drafting Marcus Mariota.

  1. R.O. Says:

Let’s all hope it finally works out… Tired of crappy QB play in TPA.

  2. Just Win Jamies Says:

People were making too big a deal of what Lovie said there but he really didn’t say anything…just tryin to make something out of nothing. I just love the media 😉

  3. Dreambig Says:

Lets get it done then! I would love to see the Bucs make this a done deal but then if they did, what would we have to read about? The Jameis watch would be dead and we would just have to specuate about the rest of the draft.

  4. Martinii Says:

I agree Winston will be our first pick. Vat majority of those who get paid for their analysis agree on Winston. Not to change the subject, but now that the compensatory picks were announced, what will be the Bucs new pick numbers starting in the 4th rd?

  5. Mariota Joe Says:

I’ve enjoyed being a Bucs fan. Won’t be much longer it seems……

  6. BucTrooper Says:

Mariota Joe will be first in line for playoff tickets in shines Winston jersey and new screen name.

  7. @Hands2theFace Says:

I can’t think of a ransom it would take to trade down and not take Winston. Also, the last time it did happen was 2001 when the dirty birds moved up 4 spots for Vick because the chargers were still in a funk about Leaf #gunshy. 1997 you had a small move up for legend OL Pace. Before that it was the expansion Panthers who moved out of the top spot for the Bengals to take Ki-jana Carter. Bottom line; they’re not reading the pick. I can’t see any teams in the top six spots attempting it.

  8. TheDon Says:

I hear Jameis is switching his number. I wonder to what? Can’t wait to get my Jameis Buc jersey

  9. Bucfan4life Says:

If the Colts want to trade Andrew Luck and their first round pick I will take that deal. Outside of that, there is no trade offer that I would accept. For the first time in 30 years we have the first pick and a potential franchise QB at our fingertips. He is the best QB prospect outside of Luck in the last 10 years. These guys don’t grow on trees. I don’t care if he doesn’t play a down next year while we rebuild the line. Get him into OBP and your halfway to being a contender from years 2016-2026.

  10. MadMax Says:

@TheDon, if true I hope he picks #1.

  11. Clint Says:

    Awwwwwww yeahhhhhhhhh!

Can’t wait to become a bucs fan

  12. bucs4lyfe Says:

Mariotta Joe lol no one will notice your gone but your lying you’ll still watch even though you’ll be rooting for them to fail, you’ll still be here like a true hater waiting to rub it in someone’s face lol won’t be long before you have to disappear or change your stance. We’ll welcome back all haters with open arms

  13. Rrsrq Says:

    @don,
If true he should pick #12, that’s when the franchise had their first turn around, from worst to first.
Please no more Glennon starting talk, as talented as the cannon is, turn on the film, Koetter can’t coach heart, like running out of bounds or sliding 1 yard shy of a first down.
Hopefully after these meetings and Winston’s pro day, Bucs (Lovie) cn stop talking this trade down or another player foolishness, and proclaim Jameis the pick and let the people debate who the 2nd pick will be. If possible get him a contract, playbook and plane ticket to Tampa for May 1.

  14. JW5allday Says:

SuperSam – 21 days ago your boy, Brent Sobleski, changed his mind on who the first pick of the draft is going to be to Winston. So sure, early on did the hiring of that particular QB coach seem to mean something? Yes. But it can not be ignored that the OC, Dirk Koetter, had NFL success with a traditional pro style passer, MATT RYAN. Not to mention we do not currently have the skill set in terms of player personnel to run an up-tempo/Chip Kelly style offense. Anyway, good luck with that.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    Oh the angst..

  17. Clint Says:

@TheDon where did you see Jameis is switching his number? I haven’t seen that anywhere.

  18. Clint Says:

There’s actually no report; anywhere, that Winston is switching his number. This is how false rumors get started. He will wear #5 again.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Although the TBBF hasn’t changed his choice of Mariota (not by a large margin) over Winston……The TBBF is finally quite sure that Winston will be the pick and is more than prepared to support him as our QB.
As with any other decision….once it is made you are either obligated to support it or resign. I want us to win more than I want to be proven right with my opinion….so, if his name is called….I’m a Jameis fan!!!

  20. Clint Says:

To touch on Brent Sobleski, aka ‘SOBODAWG’ lifelong Browns fan; I’ll never forget when he told the world and all his fellow Browns fans that Brandon Weeden was can’t miss. That’s when I realized some of these guys know no more, and actually in his case; less than me.

  21. Jeagan1999 Says:

Who ever the Bucs pick, we will just have to wait until draft day to find out. There’s no reason to tip our hand just yet. It makes for a long wait, but it’s understandable. Why not leave all options on the table until we have to make a decision. My own read on which way they’ll go is 50% Winston, 30% Mariotta, 20% trade down or other player. Still a lot of time till April 30….anything can happen between now and then.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

Come to grips…soon or gtfo and find a new team.

  23. Wausa Says:

I can’t wait to see Jameis as a Buc. It will be the first time in our franchise history we will have a franchise type QB(except when the Bucs foolishly traded away future HOF QB Steve Young).

  24. Martinii Says:

Thanks guys for the compensatory info…..

  25. JBuc Says:

Even all you Mariota fans must admit it is a bit alarming that this kid seems to express no interest in being a Buc. I have hired quite a few people in my life and one of, if not the most, the most important qualities that generally determines success is a strong desire for the job and to be the best.

While I know we are not in the rooms interviewing these two candidates, at least on the surface one candidate (guess who) seems to really want the job and the other not so much. If all other things are equal, and they are not, this means an awful lot.

  26. Ron Burgandy Says:

    Buc 1987
    Stay classy, punk.

  27. Johnny Dejay Says:

I think the two players will both have nice careers in the NFL. Jameis should start off better and then plateau, while Mariota will take some time to learn the pro-style game and then rocket to the top. However, if either one of these players is asked to takeover this team behind this horrific offensive line, all bets are off. Promising young QB’s get shell-shocked behind bad offensive lines all the time.

I think the Bucs would be wiser to draft Mariota because they shouldn’t be playing a young QB until they get that offensive line rebuilt.

It troubles me that we don’t hear any teams rumbling about wanting to trade up for Winston. It’s almost like everyone else wants the Bucs to take him so they don’t have to make the tough decision.

  28. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Koetter can’t coach heart, like running out of bounds or sliding 1 yard shy of a first down.

Wow. We’re now ready to write a player off based on ONE play. Over and over again this just keeps being used as a sign that MG8 is no good.

When I saw that play I too was ticked. I get it. But perhaps Glennon simply made a mistake in believing he needed to keep the QB upright.

Basically though the charge of no heart or cowardice is simply absurd. Glennon stood tall in the pocket and took his beating as did Josh.

Anybody who wants to call McCown or Glennon cowardly needs to check themselves. BOTH of these guys took severe beatings back there and I didn’t see either of them quit or get excessive happy feet or stop looking downfield.

I’d love to see some of you real He-men line up behind last year’s Oline and check the size of your cojones.

There are legitimate reasons to doubt Glennon. I do not believe a lack of courage is one of them. ONE freaking play measured against the dozens of times he took a beating.

  29. Pickgrin Says:

Thank God Jameis Watch is back Joe – even if it is just to say that Ira says Winston is a lock. I was getting worried when there was no Jameis Watch yesterday. How can Jameis Watch be a “daily nugget” if you don’t run it every day? LOL

  30. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @JBuc

Even all you Mariota fans must admit it is a bit alarming that this kid seems to express no interest in being a Buc.

You must have missed the thread that pointed out this is cultural with Samoans.
They are a quiet respectful people and they look down on loudmouths and showoffs.

In fact it’s not alarming at all to Mariota supporters it’s a feature not a bug!

It’s one of the reasons some of us “old school” people have difficulty warming to Fameis. Some of were taught that actions speak louder than words, that bragging is obnoxious and lacks class.

I realize that today’s culture is all about ME ME ME and Fameis will fit right in.

I saw all I needed to see about Mariota’s leadership in the BCS game. When the Ohio State player pile drove Mariota into the ground multiple Oregon OL IMMEDIATELY jumped the OSU player to stick up for THEIR guy.

Mariota is a leader. Again you do not make Fameis and his loud mouth look any better by attempting to smear Mariota or detract because he’s a quiet modest man.

MInd you I’ve signed off on Fameis as the #1 pick. But unlike some of you pollyanna Winstonites I realize the gamble. And it’s not just off the field.

Fameis will be playing with MEN now. If things turn south and he starts his lecturing after somebody drops a pass or misses a block one of these MEN is liable to to Fameis…shut up kid!!!

  31. ADown88 Says:

Got to ask Roy Cummings a couple of questions last night:

Me: “Why do you hear about teams wanting to trade up for Mariota, but nobody ever mentions Winston?”

Roy: “Probably because the Bucs are not willing to deal.”

Me: “Everything you read from other teams makes it sound like Jameis doesn’t even exist. For instance, Woody Johnson’s comments on Geno and Mariota, he never even mentions Jameis.”

Roy: “For teams picking 2-32, he doesn’t exist”

Roy seems pretty damn confident that Jameis is the guy, and that the Bucs have no plan to move from that 1 spot. The actions (or lack there of) of other teams around the league speak louder than Lovie’s words.

“Jameis should start off better and then plateau, while Mariota will take some time to learn the pro-style game and then rocket to the top.”
    —————————————————————————

Where do people come up with such ridiculous notions? Jameis is the better QB now – and will quite likely be the better QB in the future. His floor is higher and his ceiling is higher than Mariota as well.

What in the world makes some people think that Mariota will be better in the long run in the NFL? Because he runs faster in a straight line?? All that means in the NFL is that he is more likely to get injured.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    It’s called the “IT” factor.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

“At the NFL meetings here in Phoenix, haven’t met a soul who doesn’t think the Bucs are taking Winston at No. 1.” Ira Kaufman

Sounds like what they were saying at the combine too. Yet we still have a few knuckleheads that are holding out hope for Mariota. Good for them.

  35. Stpetebucsfan Says:

“What in the world makes some people think that Mariota will be better in the long run in the NFL?”

    Aaron Rodgers….Russell Wilson….Colin Kaepernik…

How often do these guys operate out of the shotgun?
    How often do they run?
    How often are they injured?

People look at the future of the NFL and it’s not pocket passers. That’s why people see the upside in Mariota. He’s simply a far better athlete than Fameis.

As for me I can see ALL sides of this debate. Marcus IS clearly a better athlete and more mobile and elusive in the pocket. But Fameis is no MG8 or Peyton Manning back there and IMHO Fameis has enough mobility and elusiveness to succeed.

Again in this debate both QB’s advocates have sometimes gone over the top.

BOTH of these players are good PROSPECTS! NEITHER is a good NFL QB…yet.

  36. Eric Says:

I think Winston will be the pick, and people will come to know he is not at all a me, me, me player but just the opposite.

People who know and have actually played with the man do not hold that opinion.

    Go Jaboo.

  37. Pickgrin Says:

SPBF -The leadership issue goes a lot farther than Jameis being a “loudmouth” and Mariota being “quiet” and “modest”.

Besides – Winston does not “lecture” his teammates – he encourages them and also holds them accountable.

Isn’t it about time a Bucs QB gets in VJax face and says “WTF dude? that was right in your hands” after his 2nd drop of the day?

  38. Buc1987 Says:

How many times have you yelled at the TV because a WR dropped the ball?

You won’t have to do that anymore. Jameis will do that for you.

  39. Bucfan4life Says:

@johnny Dejay: while the leading physicist currently finishing up his doctorate at MIT is brilliant, he is sure to start off his career well and quickly plateau. My 8 year old son has made it through his 3rd science class and performed well. Because of this I believe he will be the better physicist and will rocket to the top on the long run.

I have no empirical evidence to support thin claim. In fact, many 3rd graders who have done well in said science class have have been quite horrible scientists. The majority of them are even out of the field of science within a couple of years. None of that matters to me because I know my 8 yo has a higher ceiling.

  40. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Isn’t it about time a Bucs QB gets in VJax face and says “WTF dude? that was right in your hands” after his 2nd drop of the day?

And when Fameis throws an INT as he most certainly will should VJAX come to the sideline berating Winston. Or is he SAINT Fameis and above reproach.

Of course VJAX would never do that….but if Fameis gets on the wrong player he’s liable to get it stuffed right back in his face.

If Fameis has one of his meltdowns like he did against Oregon and literally had to be threatened with benching by Jimbo how is that going to be received by the rest of the PROS around him?

Fortunately for Fameis Lovie is a very laid back dude and probably won’t go nuckin futs if Fameis blows up again.

  41. Clint Says:

    @ADown88

Really good point. Thanks for sharing what Cummings had to say.

  42. JBuc Says:

StpeteBucsFan: it takes zero effort to express to a team and a community your desire to play for them. This is not a smear of Mariota as you put it. I think this is calculated. I get the feeling he does not want to play here.

Also, it is not “me first” to express your desire to play somwhere. you may consider it old school to play it cool and not vocalize your intent but in today’s world it is a sign of lacking the ability to relate to people and desire. Jameis says he wants to be the best and then backs it up on the field.

  43. Buc1987 Says:

Stpetebucsfan…I have no problem saying anything about Mariota. Because he’s NOT going to be the pick. If we still have a few fans in here that think (just know) Mariota’s going to be the pick, then I won’t relent.

  44. Pickgrin Says:

    SPBF says:
    “Aaron Rodgers….Russell Wilson….Colin Kaepernik…”

Only 1 of those QBs is a legit HOFer. And he ain’t the one of the 3 you listed that would be considered an “athelete”.

That’s no answer BTW – I can play the list game too.

Manning, Brady, Brees, Montana, Favre, Marino….

I’ll take the strong armed pocket passer who moves well and reads & shreds defenses with his accuracy and anticipation as my NFL quarterback all day long over the “athletic” QB. All day long. We’re talking NFL here – not look at the que card – stomp your foot – look to your 1st option then run with the ball if he’s covered.

  45. Rrsrq Says:

    @SPBF,

You are right, can’t judge a guy off of one play, where he slid short or the other plays where he went out of bounds instead off going for the first. The cannon is a courageous player, but making the play when you have to run, it’s not in his wheelhouse.

  46. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    87, Pickgrin, Adown88

Surprised no comments on my post…..”long time Mariota supporter concedes”

  47. Eric Says:

Winston isn’t going to yell at anyone.

He will try and rally his troops though.

  48. ADown88 Says:

    @TBBF

Lol! We are Jameis Witnesses… When we convert one, we still have to go knock on the next door. But welcome aboard! Can’t wait to win some football games!!

  49. Pickgrin Says:

Glad you are on board TBBF. It’s inevitable at this point so its not like you had much choice though – LOL.

This kid is gonna be the most bada$$ QB to ever wear a Buccaneer uniform. In 8 months you are likely to feel foolish that you ever preferred Mariota. We hope at least….

If L&L fix the OLine – Winston is gonna have a good rookie year and bring real excitement and justified hope for future Super Bowls back to Tampa Bay.

  50. Lovethepewter Says:

Hey Mariota lovers…there’s the door. Leave your key under the mat losers

  51. Pickgrin Says:

See now even I will comment against that Lovethepewter.

Mariota is no slouch. He’s probably going to be a pretty good QB in this league if he lands in the right situation with a team that is willing and able to bring him along at a comfortable pace and ultimately cater their offense to his unique skillset.

Just because Winston is obviously the better QB for the Bucs doesn’t make those who like Mariota “losers”.

Show some class. No need to rub it in.

  52. Buc1987 Says:

TBBF….it was only a matter of time.

  53. Clint Says:

I bet quiet Mariota is scared of the big moment though. I think Mariota lovers should be turning in their keys as well.

  54. Tiny Tim Says:

Colin kapernick? The same qb that did not throw a 4th quarter TD all year last year? The same qb that has regressed the past two years? That is what happens to spread qbs when the defense take away their first read. Rogers and wilson were already pro style quaterbacks like Winston. Nice try though

  55. BoltIsle Says:

If Jameis’ actions were problematic for teammates and coaches, you would have a lot of people saying this. There are no accounts of this even “off record”. Nothing wrong with pointing out facts, but trying to make opinions as facts is where I have an issue. Case in point is pointing out the number of int’s he threw, and he made some bad decisions on some of the throws, but people they to pin all 18 on bad decisions when that is not fact.

Any QB getting pummeled into the ground should get a response like Ohio St got in the championship game from a lineman. Kind of a weak argument for leadership. I’m not saying Mariota is not a leader, just it’s a weak argument to justify your point. Mike Glennon should get the same response as the Bucs QB.

Obviously I am Pro Winston, but would be ok with Mariota. If we picked second and Winston was gone.

  56. Stanglassman Says:

Welcome aboard TBBF! It will be a weight off your shoulders not having to come up with BS comments arguing for the wrong side of history. Now only if you would do it for your clown car politics.
