Different Year, Same Holes

March 9th, 2015

LovieRefereeThe Custodian of Canton, eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune, hit the national radio airwaves this afternoon with Mike Florio and highlighted the frustration of many Bucs fans.

The free agency dinner bell rings tomorrow at 4 p.m., and the Lovie Smith regime and the Bucs are chasing the same goals again.

Dangerous edge rusher? Check.

Starting left tackle? Check.

Veteran quarterback? Check (most likely).

“The sad part for Bucs fans, you know, a year later, they’re still looking for the same things,” Kaufman said. “A left tackle that can protect the blind side and a pass rushing on a defensive end. They whiffed on Anthony Collins and Michael Johnson and Anthony Collins. I don’t expect them to do business with the Cincinnati Bengals in the near future after those disasters.”

Kaufman believes the Bucs are “in the ballgame” for former Eagles defensive end Trent Cole, but he didn’t seem optimistic.

Joe knows the Bucs have to address left tackle this spring. Demar Dotson transforming into an average starting left tackle at almost 30 years old is unlikely.

If the Bucs don’t bag a left tackle soon, they’re almost forced into drafting a left tackle after they draft a quarterback at No. 1 overall. Joe would have absolutely no problem with that. Joe’s all good if the Bucs want to trade up — back into the first round — to get a left tackle they desire.

Considering Tampa Bay is committed to keeping grill-yearning left guard Logan Mankins this season, it would be senseless not to capitalize on letting him take a young tackle under his wing, as he did Nate Solder in New England. (If you missed Joe’s chat with Solder, you can find it here.)

    I disagree
There is no guarantee at a first round Quarterback.
Trade down and pick 3 offensive linemen with round 1, 2 and 3.
You need to start up front.

  2. INDYbucsfan Says:

It sucks because nobody wants to play for the worst team in the nfl, so you have to overpay. But just because you overpaid doesn’t mean said player will perform. Ughhhh I can’t wait until we make the playoffS.

  3. ndog Says:

    Greg just go away.

  4. louden Says:

As most should already know the bottomline: Lovie made this team worse so far..
Even Shianos line stunts seem pretty genius in comparisson..

    Again:
Some people said it would be crazy to call for Lovies head after one season and i will say it again: he just repeated what he did ever since being HC of Bears..

    This offseason so far:

    – Cousins is still wasting a roster spot
    – Mike Jenkins: see above Cousins..
    – Goldson is literally a gold son; not worth the money (maybe they start sth. to sheme around his skills this year? lets see..)
    – didn´t gave Foster a little tender offer: who should replace him besides a 2nd round LB?? who??
and why the hell should Foster be able to play SLB??
and why are the Bucs so often developing guys and then, when the players have some good experience, they dump them and dont make sth. out of it (trade or just letting them play >>> Benett)

so far, i am ready to call for his head right at regular season start, he better put some good sheme and players together, or its time to rent billboards..

  5. Greg Says:

We will never be a conternder till we build an offensive line up front.
    Lovie is not the solution.
If you think otherwise you are fooling yourself.
    Sorry

  6. Thunder Sack Says:

    @greg

I am not averse to that idea, but it does not address the other areas of need. The Bucs could shore up a lot of holes on both lines with those three picks.

  7. Andrew 1 Says:

Drafting Winston will be the turning point for this franchise.

  8. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

The Bucs are so inept that they whiffed on Anthony Collins….TWICE…;)

  9. Jacko101 Says:

As much as I don’t want us to Draft Winston, I’d rather see that than us draft 3 lineman. We can get Lineman in the 3rd and 4th after we draft Kendricks

  10. Teacherman777 Says:

Trade back to 4 or 5 and pick up an extra 1st next year and a2ndand 3rd this year.

Then trade back again for another 2nd and 4th round pick.

That gives a 1st this year around 16.

    2 1sts next year!!

And 3 2nd round picks this year!!!!

Plus the first pick and 4th in the 3rd round!!

That would give us 6 picks in the first 2.25 roounds!!

    Trade back!!!

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

The biggest problem is we have the same clown shoe head coach as last year!!!

  12. Teacherman777 Says:

    QB, QB, QB…

  14. LargoSamIM Says:

    Joe..,

I agree with the title of this article…. and it is really SAD ! However, I disagree with your importance of a left tackle being more than a very good MLB (I’m praying for Eric Kendricks !). While there is no doubt that a solid LT is important, and the OL needs ALOT of help, there is not one position on the OL that is as important a good MLB (one who can tackle AND cover). In my opinion, an “average’ The MLB in the Bucs defense can be (and HAS BEEN) worth anywhere from 4 – 7 points a game ! There is not any single OL position that is THAT critical (with an average, or a little less performer)

You sir are on top of the actual game.

  18. lurker Says:

take the qb @ #1. next year we can trade down if we suck enough for a high draft pick. you do not blow this chance. we did not tank the last quarter of the season for a trade down or other player than qb.

  19. gotbbucs Says:

You guys clamoring for the trade down are wasting your time with this nonsense. Nobody trades up to or out of the top pick. NOBODY.

  20. Andrew 1 Says:

Exactly. Can anyone really see us drafting anything other than a QB with our top pick? Really?! Don’t over think it guys; the most important position is the most important need, and that = QB. peace out.

  21. The Buc Realist Says:

Don’t worry about the Left Tackle, Lovie will have the Bucs with a top 5 pick next year!!!

  22. The original "Kevin" Says:

Teacher 777 if it were that easy Im sure they would. I still think Koetter is going to make the call whether its rookie or glennon. I still think Aaron Rodgers would have looked like hell in out offense last year so I think its inaccurate to judge anyone from our offense based on last years performance. If they traded down got some stud lineman on both sides of the ball and started Glennon I would not be disappointed but there is no way it will happen

  23. Seminole Bill Says:

I agree with Greg above; trade down and get a first class Olineman and beef up the D. Remember the Super Bowl season? We won because, in addition to the best D in the league, we had the best QB in the league for the last half of the season. He was protected and had time to throw. So, Brad Johnson vs. Mike Glennon; comparable, with a good Oline.

Would I want Jameis or Marcus instead of Glennon? With the right Oline there first, yes. But we can’t have both. We have to have an Oline first; and that means giving up on a QB as first pick. Hurts, yes, but that is where we are.

  24. CalBucsFan Says:

It’s time for all of us Bucs fans to get realistic about cutting players thinking we can get better ones through free agency. Bill Polian has one of the best minds in the NFL and with the helpf of Scout’s Inc. has a free agent tracker on BSPNs website.

According to the tracker, here is who’s available as unrestricted free agents as those who were cut for the 3 needs stated in this article and their (Grade) at their respective positions, with unrestricted free agents left out. (Anyone with a grade of D or worse are intentionally dropped from my list because the Bucs don’t need to sign D players):

    Edge Rusher: #3-Greg Hardy-Panthers (B-), Adrian Clayborn-Bucs (C) Karl Klug-Titans (C).

    Starting Left Tackle: Bryan Bulaga-Packers (B), Ryan Harris-Chiefs (C), Jake Long-Rams (C).

    Veteran QB: Hoyer-Browns (C).

Not a whole lot to pick from, is there? AND, the Bucs have the 2nd best one in their grasp on the DE list in Clayborn already, so why cut him?

The tackle selections are few too, with Bulaga the best of the small group.

And the QB situation? Geez, the one guy available is being replaced in Cleveland by the guy the Bucs jettisoned!

No way should the Bucs go looking for a better DE or QB in free agency than what’s already on their roster. If they do, then we will be reading this same article again next year, deja-vu-all-over-again because we will needing to fill the same holes. Grab an OLman (or two), but keep Clayborn and Glennon!

  25. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    Hmm…Jake Long just got released.

  26. Tye Says:

Head coach is the greatest need the Bucs need to fix before anything else…. 2-14 was foreseeable when he was hired and this season will not be much different…

  27. bucrightoff Says:

If the Eagles offer the RGIII package (and likely more than that), saying no means you better pray the QB your draft becomes a HOFer. Because giving up what the Rams got (6 starters after all the moves they made with those picks), you better not draft an ok or slightly above avergae QB. The Bucs are quite terrible and have a ton of holes to fill, they need at least 14 starters over the current guys they have (and it’s not a young group either, Lovie got a lot of middle aged guys last year).

People need to accept this is going to take time, and if someone wants to expedite the process by giving up a fortune to take the #1 pick, you thank them for giving us multiple first (and second) round picks for a few years. There will be other QBs, these guys aren’t special, elite talents. They’re just another couple guys who have as good a chance of being nothing as they do great. Andrew Luck isn’t walking onto that podium.

  28. Leon Says:

Its really Winston and noone else, its nowhere close. If they screw this up I’d imagine Lovie would look like a human toolbag and shouldn’t sleep well when house collapses around him.. Mariotta and trade back sh** makes fans look like retards..

For everyone who says “trade down”, I want specifics. Which team is your trade partner, what do you get from them and who do you take with the lower #1 pick, hmm? People who randomly say “trade down” are clueless.

  34. SteveK Says:

    BPA all the way.

    Leonard Williams, come on down!

Sorry guys, we need to be tips in the NFL at any position.

  35. Danati74 Says:

The only ppl wanting us to trade back, or go all OL is part of the MG Mob. Remember guys he’s avg. at best. The rest of NFC south teams have QBs. It’s time to get a real QB. That’s why we threw the rest of the season. Please draft hurry, so we can all move forward.

  36. LargoSamIM Says:

I think that anyone who says “trade down” is just recognizing how much help the Bucs really need. I say, take one of the QBs at #1, then Kendricks (he’s special and could be the “glue” our Def needs), then OL all the way. What is still bothering me, though, are the two OLs we took last year in round 5…. neither showed much….and don’t say…”oh well, they were rookies”…look at Dallas, NE, and GB…. just saying, I’m not sure I have much faith in the Bucs analysis/scouting of OL prospects..

Reaching for O Lineman is foolish. Im not against 2nd rd, 3rd etc but this draft is deep with O Line and we um, need a QB. If there isn’t a coup of a trade deal that would be impossible to pass on then it has to be QB.

    ——————————————————————

I am down with that 100% as long as Winston is the QB pick. I would not be surprised at all to see the draft unfold almost exactly like that for the Bucs – First 4 rounds anyways.
Kendricks may well be gone by #34 though. If Cam Erving is available at 34 I would take him over anyone else expected to go somewhere in that range.

  40. Bucs#1 Says:

    Sam

I agree with the 1st part. The fans that say trade down can actually see how bad this team is and know how many players they need to even be just average. There’s not a QB in the NFL that could help this team right now much less the draft. I would rather see the Bucs trade down, get more picks and players and improve their team than to take either one of these highly overrated QB’s. If the Bucs do insist on taking a QB at #1 I hope it’s Mariota because he’s not close to hitting his ceiling or potential yet and Winston has already hit his and maxxed out. However no QB is going to look good or win if Bucs don’t improve their entire team overall. When you have only won 6 games in the last 2 years, you stink

  41. bucgatr 71 Says:

    1. Fire Lovie and find coach the understands offense (pipe dream, I know)
    2. Draft Mariota
    3. Invest the majority of your cap into Oline and playmakers for next 2 years building your QB and his confidence.
    4. Once confidence established shift draft strategy and readjust cap to build D.

  45. bucgatr 71 Says:

I must say before I go that I am getting More and More out of the Trade Down crowd. Just one team wanting to move up for Mariota and Zero rumors about teams that want to move up for Winston. Looks like I will have to adapt and overcome more and more

  46. ddneast Says:

Really Leon, people who live in glass houses…
Lot of veteran FA’s you can overpay on cap friendly contacts while the present administration tries to overcome 10 years of bad drafting and FA signings.
Out of all the FA signings we have had in the prior 5 years, only one, VJax, was worth a damn.
Despite two glaringly bad FA signings last year,. Verner, McDonald and even Brandon Myers came through.
I’ll leave McClown off that list because he was hamstrung with an inept, inexperienced OC as was the rest of the offense.
Also, what a lot of you clowns seem to conveniently forget is a lot of so called experts including Bill Polian hailed the FA signings of the Bucs last year.
I like the idea of Jake Long depending on his rehab. he’s got a few years left in the tank. He can’t be to happy with the Rams releasing him while he’s rehabbing.
Either that or just give Clayborn one more shot at RDE, his natural position. I don’t think anyone’s going to break the bank to try and get him.

  47. LargoSamIM Says:

    Pickgrin & Bucs#1 :

Thanks guys ! and if we do draft Winston, I think that enhances Ervin… who played LT and Center both very well…. also, personally Bucs#1, I agree with you about Mariota…. but, anytime (even this year, I think its a “crapshoot” to draft a QB. BUT… the BUCS must draft oone one of them, and I pray they get it right (lucky ?). i’m not opposed to either… just afraid you may be right about Winston…. but, then again, who am I ?

  48. NJBucsFan Says:

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think it was LUV that suggested spending a 2nd rounder on Eric Kendrick. Since, I have looked into the kid and I like the idea. I know we all want OL in round 2, but the truth is OL talent is usually available throughout all the rounds. Most of the starting OL players in the league were drafted round 3 or later.

So ERIC KENDRICK would be a great pick to replace Foster.

  50. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

They WILL draft Winston when it’s all said and done.

It’s what I’ve been saying for a month now.

I’ve given my reasons why and so far most analysts and draftniks back it up.

There will be no “meltdown” for me on draft day as some have suggested.

I’m actually at the point where I don’t really care anymore what others think in here regarding Winston. I think L&L plus the Glazers know all about him by now and have already made up their minds.

“Winston gets it at age 17.”

“He’s got this infectious personality,” Dilfer said. “A lot of people use the term leadership, but I like guys who are comfortable in their own skin. That’s Jameis. He came in a little unprepared, and he admitted it. But he’s got a real presence to him. I’ve been real proud of him.”

  51. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Sim Says
“3. Invest the majority of your cap into Oline and playmakers for next 2 years building your QB and his confidence.”

Not to pick, but this point seems to suggest the cap money be sent in FA…there isn’t much there in free agency that will help the oline.

Personally? I say go after the rights to Hardy, sign him to a contract that pays league minimum if the first year if he is suspended, and then is incentive driven.

Then draft Kendrick in round 2, OL in 3-4, safety in 5. Then sign undrafted OL FAs like mad and look for gold, because there just isn’t much out there to go with otherwise.

  52. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Although, if Jake Long could stay healthy, I would take him on a year deal.

  53. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Oh yes and fix the effing line for this kid….

    and get some DE’s…..

and get someone to relinquish Lovie’s “total control” over my team’s roster…

    and, and, and,

Just get me my franchise effing QB for once….

    Do the right thing…

Endless blunders with this team…I’m not holding my breath.

  54. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

And I promise to buy Bonzai’s tickets that he won’t buy if they draft Winston…

  55. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Just curious…and to play devils advocate, 87, how would you take it if they pick Mariota instead?

  56. LargoSamIM Says:

    BuccaneerBonzai Says:

” So ERIC KENDRICK would be a great pick to replace Foster.”

I agree 1000% ! I am really high on Kendricks ! Back in 2012 I beat thre drum for Luke Kuechly (who the Bucs could had at #7, but instead took Mark Barron. I see the same things in Kendricks….. Butkus award… great tackler… great in coverage (VERY important in the Bucs Def !)….just 3″ shorter…. I wouldn’t mind if they has to trade back into the 1st to get him !! I mean, what’s a very good MLB for the next 10 years worth ?

  57. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Hey, no fair! You’re canceling out my boycott!!!

  58. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Bonzai….pick one but they better have a plan for Mariota and I’m not counting on that experiment to work out well.

  59. BirdDoggers Says:

The current regime inherited a pretty good LT in Penn. They decided he wasn’t good enough. They whiffed on Collins so now they’re back to finding a player for one of the most important and most difficult positions to fill. The brain trust failed miserably on that one position alone.

  60. LargoSamIM Says:

Okay guys…. let’s thin about this…. brand nes OC… so whoever we draft at QB has the same (almost) chance to show himself during preseason… right now, I thin Winston is the “more advanced” QB…..BUT…. his physique and weight fluctuation scares me….. Mariots, on the other hand is almost the perfect physical specimen for a QB at 22 years old… he’s more athletic and I think.. he’s more of a long term upside…. but that’s just me… I am okay with either really…. let all the QBs compete in pre-season nd then pick your starter…I mean, I would say they are all on equal footing in a new offense….

“I hope it’s Mariota because he’s not close to hitting his ceiling or potential yet and Winston has already hit his and maxxed out.”

LOL. Wow. That’s a bold declaration. Based on what evidence exactly??

Let’s see – The young man only played for 2 years in College. Led his team undefeated and to the National Championship win in dramatic fashion as well as the hands down Heisman winner in only his 1st season playing QB in College. Year 2 took a team with much less talent in some key positions to another undefeated regular season record and did so with no less than FIVE 4th quarter come from behind victories to extend his win streak to 26 straight games before finally losing a game in the playoff semi finals because his teammates couldn’t seem to hold on to the football. 26-1 record as a starter in 2 years and accomplished all that while playing baseball full time during football offseason – and also managed to simultaneously hold down a 3.4 GPA in school.

Throw in the facts that he BOLDLY checks every box an NFL scout wants to see from a QB prospect – commandingly ran a fairly sophisticated pro style offense with wide leeway to make onfield adjustments off defensive reads and call audibles.. AND that those in the know including NFLers who have worked with him and every coach he’s ever had going back to peewee professing that this kid has the highest football IQ they have ever seen….

But Yea – your probably right. I’m quite sure – now that he is going to concentrate on football 100% for the 1st time ever in his life – that he’s already “maxxed out” and has no where to go from here but down.

    LoFnL

  62. LargoSamIM Says:

    Hey Pickgrin….

Why so hateful ? Okay… I get it/// you like Winston… but from what I’ve red on this website… everyone hs at least two things….Opinions and ASSHO*ES… so please… just don’t BE one ! I agree with you that, right now, Winston is the more “advanced” QB… that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the better prospect. Any QB going into the NFL is a an unknown and for how long ? It’s just opinions,, man, don’t take it so personal….

  63. Pickgrin Says:

Sam – “hateful” was not my intention. Sarcastic? Incredulous? Sure. That was just such a silly statement that I couldn’t help but dispute it with facts and top it off with a touch of sarcasm. Didn’t mean to offend anyone. You seem to be the one who took something personally and it wasn’t even your statement that I quoted so I’m not sure why it struck such a nerve with you. I doubt many would see or describe what I wrote as “hateful”. Just refuting an out of left field statement – that’s all.

And yea – I like Winston – have since I 1st saw him play early in 2013 and back then it seemed like a pipe dream that the Bucs might ever have a chance to get him. Now all they have to do is write his name down to secure one of the best QB prospects in many many years. That’s just my opinion of course – but there are quite a few people who supposedly know a lot more about football than any of us that share that same opinion.

  64. LargoSamIM Says:

    Pickgrin….

Thank you. I respect your opinion.

  65. Pickgrin Says:

Ditto Sam. Its all good man.

As long as the Bucs select a QB #1- I will be happy. Both are excellent QB prospects and we are fortunate to be in this position.

But like ’87 says – we better have a hell of a plan if the pick is to be Mariota. Winston is plug and play from day 1 and his ceiling is practically unlimited IMO.
Mariota has a lot of potential and I have to admit that his exceptional running ability and foot speed is truly something to be excited about – I just think Winston is going to be the better NFL QB both short and long term so of course I want what I perceive as best for my Bucs. Its gonna be a long 52 days till we find out who our new QB is….

  66. P'cola Buc Says:

We are such “little piggies” trying to fix everything at once. Be realistic, grow up and realize the team will not be all that great next year no matter where we put our emphasis this year, be it at OL, MLB QB or DE. If that truth is accepted then for goodness sake with our first pick let us finally take our QB! Land sakes we have the number one pick….go for it! Either of the QB picks will be fine (but I am leaning hard towards Winston). This is our opportunity to do it right and maximize our chances finally for that better than average QB. Take the QB, don’t lose this opportunity. With this finally out of the way we can systematically build our other areas properly with the time we all know we need!

  67. JFF Says:

This is not a good OL draft especially if you’re looking for LTs. Trading back into the late 1st for Ereck Flowers is the only move that would make sense. We’re not gonna get a starter-quality LT later than the 1st round, and even some of the 1st round options (Scherff, Peat, Erving) are risky projections at LT and may kick inside.

We know the Bucs have demand but you can’t make supply happen. We need 3 of the most valuable & scarce positions in the NFL because we’ve gotten poor value for recent picks & cap space. Last year L&L had an opportunity to fill the QB hole with Teddy Bridgewater but they took Mike Evans instead in the deepest WR draft of all time. Once again this 2015 draft is loaded with WRs so that Evans pick was a big mistake – passing on a talented prospect at a scarce position for a talented prospect at a loaded position that is easy to find is a big no-no if you want maximum value. Same goes for drafting a RB in round 3 when that pick could’ve been used on an interior lineman. You can find quality RBs off the street FFS!!

  68. Pickgrin Says:

JFF – So you are saying picking Evans was a “mistake”?? And Brigewater at #7 last year would have represented “maximum value”???

I strongly disagree. Winston is a way better QB than Bridgewater and aside from Odell Beckam Jr, there’s no other young receiver I would rather have than Evans.

Winston to Evans is going to be a force to reckon with for a long time and despite the 2-14 season – I am very glad it turned out this way.

    I can dream can’t I?

    Fans here are freaking crazy.

    Trade down! Fire Lovie!

There has only been 1 year with this coach & GM and people thinkin firing them and moving on will help build this team better for the long haul? Who the F*** would you hire? You realize that we haven’t been able to develop our drafted talent because we keep switching coaching regimes?

Honestly getting the #1 pick is the best thing that could have happened out of last season. Embrace it and move on imo. Lovie got the defense playing at a solid level the 2nd half of the season. Use that as hope please. The offensive line was also terrible in 2013. They tried to make some moves and most made sense on paper (outside of letting Zutah walk) but it didn’t work out. Move on.

To be fair, rarely do coaches lead a team to the worst record in the NFL and turn the team around to become a playoff contender. Can only think of two coaches in the past 25 years to pull that off, Jimmy Johnson and Marty Schottenheimer.
