“I Want Us Flying Around”

September 9th, 2013

Greg Schiano met the media today, and highlights included the head coach saying multiple times that the Bucs were big, impressive hitters on defense and he doesn’t want to change much of that.

“I want us flying around the way we flew around yesterday because that was as hard a hitting Bucs defense that’s been around here in a long time.” Schiano went on to say the Bucs would keep watching “strike zone” videos to try and avoid personal fouls for rough hits.

Schiano also praised the kicking game and special teams, and the overall greatness of Lavonte David.

Of course, the head coach also was unhappy about his team’s sloppy offense and penalties, saying the Bucs were “very prepared” but perhaps “too excited to play together.” (You can catch the full audio below, via 620wdae.com.)

“very prepared” is not how I would describe any part of that game.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

    “Too excited to play together”…WTF?

Then they should have “played together” in preseason. Traditionally, isn’t that what preseason is for…??

Ok…week 1 is over – on to the Saints.

  3. Touchdown Gus Says:

Goldson was in the strike zone. I’ve seen still shots of this hit from mulitple angles. Goldson hit in right in the chest

  4. Ricardo Esteban Says:

he was on target touchdown. I watched it with a jets fan and we reviewed it a lot. it was a clean hit.

what was he supposed to do give up his body and get hurt? he led with the shoulder into the chest. clean hit.

if it continues the NFL will lose a lot of viewers!

but damn the Bucs were laying the wood! 🙂 like 1/2 dozen times they hit a guy so hard you just go damn, that foo just got knocked the *uck out!

    it was awesome!

  5. Brian D. Says:

    Too excited to play together…

Probably the most ridiculous excuse for poor play that I’ve ever heard…

Besides I don’t think anyone was excited to play with Luke Stocker or Kevin Ogletree…

  6. RBellBuc Says:

or you can’t comprehend his meaning. I can spell it out for you if you like, I’m a patient man.

  7. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Just listened to the press conference. Schiano is genuinely not concerned at all about how we played. Almost as if this is an easy fix. Seemed to put all the blame on the players for this loss. I don’t think he believes the coaching staff did anything wrong at all.

Would like to see the HC admit he has some things to work on instead of throwing the offense under the bus and praising the defense for all its penalties. I hope he is right and we can pull out the win Sunday.

  8. Raphael Says:

Defense loses another game….I am sensing a trend here .

  9. Oahubuc Says:

I want you flying around too, Greg. Flying around to some college towns, preferably.

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

As inspiring a press conference as I have ever seen/heard.

  11. Chef Paul Says:

He’s exhausted! Jeesus. It’s only week one and he seemed exhausted already.

  12. BucsQcCity Says:

Hopefully he’ll find as many solutions as excuses.

  13. RastaMon Says:

Strategy will soon exploit what we saw yesterday……15 yds>15 minutes in the locker room…the defense takes a 15 yard penalty…glady…for the”star” WR…TE…RB….spending 15 minutes in his locker room being “evaluated” for concussion symptoms

  14. bucsdeluge Says:

We need to put this game behind us. It was a fluke that took this win away from us. Lesson learned Levonte. It started with stupid mistakes, but they got it together and put us in position for a win in a very hostile place. That Defense looked fantastic, and I love the physical hitting. The message has now been sent to the rest of the league. I think we are gonna see a big upset next week against NO.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  15. Bobby Says:

I think what Schiano was saying was “I’ve looked at the film and the calls on Goldson and Lavonte were total BS. We play physical football and I’m not going to ask my guys to turn into pussies. If you make a legal hit and get flagged it’s NOT your fault.”

Joe was at training camp and wrote constantly about all the drills and attention to detail. You can coach men but you can’t make them play as a unit if they lose discipline at game time. I saw a lot of sloppy play around the league yesterday. Tom Brady fumbles a snap at the goal line, etc. Things that you normally don’t see as the season progresses but I didn’t see anyone with as many penalties as we had.

If I were Schiano I would be totally concerned about the offensive play calling. That has got to change. Year two in this system and there does not seem to be a lot of imagination in this offensive scheme. Nothing to keep the defense off balance. There seems to be a resistance to getting yardage in small chunks other than trying to run Martin into the teeth of the defense as if our O-line will somehow magically open a hole THIS time. Hate to see yet another O-coordinator come in but not sold on Sullivan.

  16. Bobby Says:

Schiano isn’t going to get into a pissing contest with the media or fans. He know that it’s either fix it or his job is on the line too. Why do anything except keep it in house and prepare for next week. Let the media and fans say what they are gonna say.

  17. Touchdown Gus Says:

@rasta mon depends on who the player is. If Coltson is hit like that and doesn’t want to go over the middle anymore than yeah the point got across

  18. Free(Agent)Man Says:

Anyone else see how miserable v-jax looked. He knows this offense should be better.

  19. Oahubuc Says:

I’m sure that’s the Eagles’ problem tonight too. Those guys are way too excited. Michael Vick is in a new system and Chip Kelly needs time to adjust to the pro game.

  20. passthebuc Says:

I have seen enough to know that I have seen enough.

  21. Bobby Says:

@Oahubuc….no but the Redskins may have been too excited. They looked worse than we did the first half.

  22. nick Says:

    Jay Gruden Next Year

This is what I also believe. No passes to the RBs in the flats. No quick dumps to RBs or TEs in the middle of the field. No passes to TEs PERIOD!! We have no passes that are short and in open field for the receiver to make a move on a DB. I don’t know if it is Josh or Sullivan that focuses on passes longer than seven yards, but damn.

I re watched the game and saw Mike Williams on a few drag routes (WHICH WOULD BE PERFECT! He makes great open field moves), but JFree never looked his way…. The team started horribly and even I was calling for Glennon when #5 couldn’t call a basic play and was looking to the sideline when his helmet went out. Too telling if you ask me. But the TEAM turned it around for the most part. I counted at least three false starts that did not get called on the Jets and letting our quarterback get tackled to the ground as the whistle is being blown for a penalty was atrocious if you ask me. I almost wish Sanchez was out there this weekend. We know he can’t scramble like Geno….
