Dezmon Briscoe Was The No-Show Tuesday

April 18th, 2012

One thing Joe is absolutely, totally geeked about with new Bucs coach Greg Schiano is he is giving the Bucs a come-to-Jesus experience.

Video many TV stations aired, along with reports from multiple Bucs beat writers at the scene at One Buc Palace revealed Schiano screaming about “details.”

This, ladies and gentlemen, is a football coach. It’s all about the details. If you do the little, often trivial details, well, the big things will take care of themselves.

In other words, this is what is referred to as “fundamentals.”

Schiano, afterwards, noted that all but one person expected to be at the voluntary workouts was not there. Naturally, Schiano wouldn’t release the player’s name. But Joe has found out who the culprit was, by way of Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune who named the offending player on Twitter.

@RCummingsTrib: The no-show for the Bucs first minicamp workout under new coach Greg Schiano on Tuesday was WR Dez Briscoe. We’ll see if he shows today.

Uh, oh. Not smart Dezmon. Joe likes Dezmon a lot, both his talent and he’s a nice guy too. But with the addition of Vincent Jackson in the offseason, at best, Briscoe is a No. 4 receiver, maybe No. 5 behind Preston Parker who had more playing time than Briscoe last year.

For a guy on the low rung of a roster, not showing up to a workout under a brand new law-and-order coach who is trying to weed out the bad eggs, that’s simply not a wise move on Briscoe’s part.

Doesn’t make a lot of sense, but remember reading an article last year that mentioned Briscoe’s possible lack of work ethic. Not sure if that is the case here or not though, could’ve had a scheduling issue for all we know. Do really like the guy as a receiver though, he was a beast at Kansas and a receiver I was hoping the Bucs would draft.

On a side note, just watched a minute and a half video from yesterday over at Buccaneer.com and got totally geeked. Can’t wait for next weekend and this upcoming season, can’t get here fast enough.

  2. NickinMelbourne Says:

This would have been tolerated by Rah. Cut him. I like Ed Gant better anyway. The guy is a burner and had the best preseason game of any receiver last year and then Raheem puts him on the practice squad???? Another bone head move by a head coach who will NEVER get a chance head coach again. You can bank that one.

  3. Meh Says:

Joe, Wrong twitter link. It is linking to the “not trading Talib” tweet.

  4. deminion Says:

    ED Gant !!!

  5. Piratic Says:

    @Joe:
What exactly is a “come-to-Jesus experience”? That’s the first time I’ve heard that phrase.

  6. 941-Bucs Says:

Got to watch some of the practice that people are saying he was “screaming” at the team..

Dude was just hollering out loud in an instructional type of way. It wasn’t he was a dog foaming at the mouth. He was just being louder then everyone else. More of a motivating yell rather then a in your face yelling.

  7. Josh Says:

Briscoe came through many times last year, but I was hyped about Gant last preseason as well. More notable is that everyone else was there, except Barth. Not real worried about Brisoce, because we have friggin’ Vincent Jackson!! There’s some awesome pics of yesterday at the Buc’s website. I think Foster cut off his hair.

  8. Pete Dutcher Says:

Brisco was on a reality show instead…without informing the Bucs. It’s a voluntary camp…but bet he’s toast 🙂

The reality show drama was a real soap opera, lol.

  9. BonesMahoney Says:

Well that sucks. Briscoe was probably our best WR last year despite his limited playing. It’s a real shame Mr. Dropsies Benn got more playing time than Briscoe last year solely based on his draft position. (I hope that changes with this new regime. Put the best players on the field.)

  10. Ryan Says:

Let’s hope he has a good reason.

  11. Garv Says:

I guess he doesn’t think he has a chance to make the team. Wow.
Bad move in any case imaginable.

  12. eric Says:

Perkins hollered a lot. And he played with johnny U.

Lets try and win one of first three before calling Canton.

  13. truebuc Says:

i like briscoe a lot but he hasnt played himself into a new contract at this point.
i really think schiano should take a look at ed gant, he killed it last pre season, granted ot was the 3rd, 4th team defense but i think with a real offensive coordinator…(olsen) sully can do his magic with him.

  14. Oahubuc Says:

Cut him. The Redskins need him.

  15. bucsalltheway Says:

Maybe he thinks since they got Jackson a true number one receiver that hes gonna ride the pine for another season he has tremendous talent but I think he’s trynna see where he’s gonna fit in. But I was really pissed we didn’t give ed gant a shot last year. Oh well the Washington,dc raheem regime may want him to start over santana moss lol picture that him and gaffney there starting wrs and Armstrong in the slot. Taking santana moss of there roster for briscoe would be an ultimate upgrade. I just sure as Hell hope freeman does his thing this year. I wonder will they trust him with an no huddle offense this year since it kinda worked last year. Notice I said KIND OF lol

  16. Bubba Says:

Remember the story out there that Schiano was none to happy about some of the Buc’s on twitter, etc.etc. and doesn’t like all that drama?

    Remember, Briscoe missing yesterday?

    After reading this: http://www.balleralert.com/profiles/blog/show?id=2015113%3ABlogPost%3A1307301&commentId=2015113%3AComment%3A1307585&xg_source=activity

Things don’t look to good for him to make the team unless he cleans up his act FAST!!!!!

  17. Rrsrq Says:

Don’t drop Briscoe so fast posters, tape doesn’t lie and he was our best receiver in the red zone last year, never showed signs of giving up except when he was wide open and Free would dump off to Winslow. The coule of games I attended last year, he frequently had his man beat in one on one situations

  18. Que589 Says:

I like Briscoe’s skill set and talent more than Mike Williams. I hope the kid makes it to the mini-camp

  19. Pirate Phil Says:

Tanard already got the “weed out” for rah and him, hopefully briscoe doesn’t follow

  20. raphael Says:

    C-ya Briscoe ……you don’t love football !

    book it

  21. Bobby Says:

Briscoe has too much baggage. Let him go.

    .

You guys must have thought I was joking, lol.

Brisco appeared on reality TV for some baby-momma, baby-daddy thing. I think with one of the mothers of one of Antonio’s kids.

    This is according to WDAE.

Although this camp was voluntary, Schiano will take it as a challenge to his authority. If he let’s it slide, more players will pull the same crap.

Brisco might be a promising average player, but he’s about to have all sorts of drama in his life…such as failure to pay child support.

    The Bucs will cut him.

  23. PDS Says:

Cut him. Perfect example to make. Briscoe has some ability, but he’s not going to work on the team that Schiano is looking to build.

  24. jvato24 Says:

Per a tweet … He also missed Camp today

  25. bob Says:

cut him he is practice squad type guy anyway

  26. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with the Ed Gant comment. I too think he is better,

Hmmm??? I wonder if Marvin Lewis had a hand in this????

    I smell Tampering……….

  27. jvato24 Says:

Practice Squad ?? ? Maybe you dont watch the Bucs games … He is actually pretty good. But is about to be good for a different team.

  28. BonesMahoney Says:

lol some of you. “Briscoe has too much baggage”. Yeah not showing up to a voluntary camp because of some personal/family issues clearly shows he has too much baggage. Aqib Talib has too much baggage, Briscoe does not.

Why would anyone rather have Gant? Gant has been in the league for 3 years already, on his 2nd team, been suspended for 4 games for performance enhancing drugs and still hasn’t stepped onto the field in the regular season. Vs Briscoe who has been in the league for 2 years, played in about 18-19 games and scored 7 TDs in limited playing time(that’s more than Benn btw, who has played in nearly every game the past 2 seasons).

  29. bucbelevr Says:

COMPADRES……….could we trade misift Talib, plus 3rd rounder to Vikings, to jump up to 3????

Think Schiano is playing it cool, but firmly believe he has entrenched within Dominik that TRich for his running plan is the point.

And yes, Vikings need CB in the worst way, and are looking at Claiborne. Would they take Talib? Then they could still get Kalil at #5.

  30. Bobby Says:

Yes, he has too much baggage. Family issues are one thing when you clear it with the coach to take care of it. When you just ‘don’t show’ then you are just telling the coach other things are more important than football and Schiano already said he’s looking for guys that ‘love football’.

  31. JKTampa Says:

Last year was last year. Voluntary workout or not, gotta have everyone on the same page. I like the new team first attitude.

  32. Joe Says:

    buc belevr:

COMPADRES……….could we trade misift Talib, plus 3rd rounder to Vikings, to jump up to 3????

Sure, if you feed Rick Spielman enough acid.

No team is going to touch Talib until after his trial — if that.

  33. Joe Says:

If TJax, a starter, got run for not showing up to One Buc Palace to meet with Schiano and his coaches because he was rebabbing, imagine what will happen to the No. 5 receiver who blew off workouts — as in AWOL — because he had to fool around with some bimbo on a reality show.

Yeah, Joe can see Schiano looking the other way on that.

  34. Thomas2.2 Says:

Does anyone care is Dez Briscoe no-shows every day for the next decade?

I sure dont: the depth chart is:

V Jax, Mike Will, Parker, Benn, Stroughter (insert whomever you want as the #6) – probably a draft pick or Ed Gant.

  35. BonesMahoney Says:

Jackson already had a billion other strikes before that though. They can say these guys get a clean slate because of the new coaching staff but for players like Jackson and Talib that isn’t true.

“Number 5 WR” lol Joe. Briscoe was our best WR last year. 6 TDs in limited playing time. You realize that’s the same amount Mike Williams and your boy Benn had combined?

  36. Thomas2.2 Says:

Since no team has any interest in Talib – that is a good indication that he has ZERO value.

Being that he is in the last year of a deal, I understand waiting until after the draft, trial and suspension before cutting this punk – but he will be cut.

If he is acquitted, I hear there is work as a stand in for snoop dogg.

Thomas, you really have a way with words. Very Entertaining. I’m beginning to like you. OMG, that’s a scary thought.

How bout we get a Talib Hologram to play CB. He would never get in trouble off the field.

I hate to say it, but Aqib is a bonafide Dumba$$.

  38. princespanky Says:

That was Thomas best comment ever… still rolling around…

If the Snoop Dogg gig doesn’t work out he could also do voice work for Chris Tucker…

  39. Joe Says:

    Bones:

“Number 5 WR” lol Joe. Briscoe was our best WR last year. 6 TDs in limited playing time. You realize that’s the same amount Mike Williams and your boy Benn had combined?

You really believe the Bucs have Dezmon Briscoe as the No. 2 receiver? If Briscoe is as good as you say, how is it Williams had nearly double the receptions?

There’s a reason why — as you wrote — Briscoe had limited playing time.

  40. BonesMahoney Says:

He had limited playing time because he was splitting time with Benn, who was handed the starting job based on his draft position(per Dominik I’m sure. I recall reading something, perhaps even on this site, that Dominik was always in Raheems ear about who to play. I know he certainly didn’t earn that job). And Williams based on his 2010. If they were truly putting the best players on the field Briscoe would have been a starter and full time player last year.

If Williams doesn’t stop loafing on plays and being afraid of contact then Briscoe could/should start across from VJax this year(hopefully Schiano can straighten out Williams. Obviously a ton of talent there). Regardless of if he is a starter or the 4th WR, he has the talent to be a number 1. Cutting him would be a big mistake.

  41. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Bones:

Are u Briscoe’s girlfriend from Basketball wives or his baby mama? Because few others would put him on the field of Mike Will, PP and AB. Arguably, he is slightly ahead of Stroughter at best.

If Briscoe fell off the face of the planet, nobody in the NFL or Tampa would care.

  42. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I don’t have a problem with Twitter. In fact, I am starting to really enjoy reading some people’s tweets. I do, however, have to shake my head sometime when I read some of the tweets from some of these guys, in this case Briscoe. If you haven’t talked to Schiano and explained yourself, why in the hell would you be so stupid as to tweet to the whole world about it? I don’t expect athletes to be geniuses, but a little common sense isn’t too much to ask.

  43. BigMacAttack Says:

I think Briscoe may be a box of rocks. Doesn’t appear to be whole lot going on upstairs. The idiot could have called his coach on Sunday, or Monday, even Tuesday, but instead Tweets on Wednesday. Oh yeah, he’s a real keeper alright.

    Seeya, Dumba$$.

  44. BigMacAttack Says:

It’s just amazing how well the garbage tends to weed itself out at times. The guy could be the 2’nd coming of Jeremy Stevens, given time…… but not here.

  45. BonesMahoney Says:

Thomas, anyone that watched any Bucs games would put him on the field over Parker and Benn. Parker is a slot guy that catches 2 yard dumpoffs on 3rd and long and Benn has been a complete bust so far. Benns drop percentage was the highest in the league last year( http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/01/17/drop-rate-2011-which-receivers-are-dropping-the-ball/ ). Briscoe runs crisp routes and catches nearly everything thrown to him.

He may not the brightest guy on the team and could have handled this better, but he certainly isn’t the dumbest or most problematic on the team. Until Talib gets cut I really don’t want to see people whining about wanting someone cut because they skipped a voluntary minicamp.

  46. Rrsrq Says:

I love it how every incident is magnified by you guys, why don’t we cut everybody and get a whole new team, let’s draft a bunch of non talented football loving players. We lost by forty but we surely played hard. Every team needs talent and sometimes talent comes with a price, a swag. Doesn’t mean they are undisciplined, but they are human beings not robots. I am sure many of you never were late for work, called in when u were not sick, heck, most of you post on JBF while you are at work, get a life and Schiano coach this team.

  47. Nick2 Says:

This isn’t the Rah era when guys can blow off entire teams to be on reality shows or cuss out the head coach in the lobby of the team hotel. Schiano will have to make examples of players early on to show them he is serious. Thats what makes this a complete dumba** move. I mean yes Briscoe gets his day on some obscure reality show and ruins his professional career in the process. This has “make an example of him” all over it. Briscoe had a decent year for a backup but our entire wide receiver corp was pretty much pathetic last year so thats basically saying nothing. 7 touchdowns in 3 years won’t light any GMs fire, I guess as a backup thats ok….

  48. Rrsrq Says:

Did anyone watch the Bucs last year, Briscoe was usually beating his man, free just couldn’t or wouldn’t get the ball to him. Like I said, tape don’t lie, Schiano has seen the tape.

  49. BonesMahoney Says:

Nick, Briscoe has 7 TDs in 18 games. 16 last year and the last 2 in 2010 after being promoted from the PS. That’s pretty good for the limited amount of balls thrown his way(7 TDs on 58 targets. To compare Mike Williams has 14 TDs on 252 targets, Benn 5 TDs on 89 targets).

  50. ElioT Says:

Dudes can play ball but most of them have ZERO business acumen or common f**king sense!

  51. BigMacAttack Says:

Briscoe won’t make the team. It doesn’t matter what he did last year. What matters to Schiano is now, what is happening now, the effort put forth now. Isn’t anyone listening to what the Coach is saying? Apparently not Briscoe. I bet any money he’s dirty and couldn’t pass a drug test. That is the smoking gun and why he didn’t show up. He’s outta here.

  52. WhoIsBriscoe Says:

I guess he was busy dealing with his girlfriend/baby momma drama as evidenced by said girlfriends’s blog… http://blog.vh1.com/2012-04-19/exclusive-royce-reed-addresses-her-relationship-drama-with-dezmon-saying-my-heart-hurts
