Veteran Head Coach = Better Assistants

January 16th, 2012

Joe would think any candidate coming to interview for the Bucs’ head coaching vacancy would be asked to produce a list of assistant coaches that he not only would want to secure, but men he knows would join him in Tampa.

So who’s on Rob Chudzinski’s list? And how would that compare to Marty Schottenheimer’s?

Talking about the Bucs’ head coaching search today on The Dan Sileo Show on WDAE-AM 620, veteran Tampa Tribune beat scribe Woody Cummings said the answers to those questions probably has the Bucs leaning toward an experienced head coach.

“I think there’s probably a belief throughout the league, certainly maybe at One Buc Place, that the veteran guys may have a better time/easier time bringing in a group of assistants that can teach these young players how to play this game at this level than a young guy like Jerry Gray or Rob Chudzinski,” Cummings said.

“I think those guys are going to be very good head coaches at one point. But I think if you’re trying to stabilize this thing, and that’s really what they’re looking to do here right now, you may be leaning towards the veteran. Because at that point what happens is you have a better chance for bringing in some veteran coordinators and guys who can help the young players learn how to play the game. That’s one thing that certainly Mike Sherman has done a pretty good job of that with coordinators in the past. And certainly Marty Schottenheimer. As you look at his coaching tree, and it’s extremely impressive, you would have to think Marty would bring in the next head coach as well as himself.”

Joe cringed when he heard Cummings say the Bucs are looking to “stabilize” the team.

Stabilizing just feels like such a long way from winning a Super Bowl. But Joe has to be real, especially after watching all the NFL playoff games over the weekend. The Bucs likely need upgrades at every single coaching position to compete again.

Tampa better do something. We are no where NEAR competitive anymore.
Watching these playoff teams reminds me of just how far we have fallen.
Sorry, but other teams simply have more better players.
Looks like it is going to take some time before we become competitive again.

  2. Brad Says:

This has been my point all along. Just check my older posts. An HC only needs to be one that demands discipline and takes no BS. The coordinators are the ones that will be mostly in the trenches with the players teaching them the right way of doing things. Rumors are the biggest reason for this years collapse (besides the pop stars approach) was the terrible job the coordinators did including Morris as a DC. If Marty is hired with his resume of his past coaching tree makes it an easy choice. I just wish the damn Glazers would pull the trigger while the better coordinators are still available.

  3. RCH Says:

This is what I would like to happen Philbin as HC, Clements as OC, and Zorn as DC. I think we would be in pretty good shape with that combo along with some moves in FA.

  4. BucsfaninMi Says:

    Zorn is a QB coach.

  5. buccin cane Says:

Man some of the crap that shoots off of some of you guys’ keyboards are jus plain rediculous… I mean do some of you guys even think about what you are about to say b4 you type it….how about this, the next time a smart idea like Zorn for DC pops in one of u guys’ head…take a min and do me a favor plz… jus say it aloud 2 or 3 times first and hear how stupid it sounds OAN @BucsfaninMI thanks for correcting the guy whose name shall not be typed for that smart a&& comment.

  6. jvato24 Says:

    Zorn at DC … wow

Def if we raid GBs coaches … We will be Green Bay and then will be a HOFer too. And even make a QB coach DC ..

I do believe some of those guys in GB have potential, but I sure as hell wont call for them to be HC based off of their numbers with a future HOFer – All Pro.

Josh McDaniels was supposed to be that guy … How did that go ???
I judge who i want for HC on personality type more than any numbers.

As far this coach search is going … Feels like we are going for a mid-tier stop gap instead of drafting someone with a higher ceiling because we drafted a bust in Morris.

    Thats weak.

This team is closer to establishing stability with the right staff than it is winning Super Bowls, that’s a stone cold fact. With a productive free agency period and draft, we can hopefully watch the Bucs go on a few winning streaks and not another double digit losing streak. From there, hopefully the team can build on the stability and become contenders. This won’t happen overnight, but I also don’t think it’s as far off as some other fans do.

    Need some education here:

I’m trying to understand the 3-4 as it would relate to the Bucs if we made the switch.

As I understand it, the 3-4 is laid out like this?

    DE NT DE
    SAM JACK
    CB CB
    MIKE WILL

    SS FS

So, if that is right, what we would potentially see on the Bucs in a 3-4 scheme is the following?

    Bowers Price Clayborn
    SAM? JACK?
    Talib Biggers (or pick)

    Foster GMC

    Tanard Grimm

Could someone in the know explain it to me a little better? Point out mistakes and fixes to the above?

@buccin.. Agree 100%.. Realbuc is the biggest one that blogs the most incorrect data.. His latest was that Marty was unavailable because he was hired as the OC for the Rams.

  10. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

Well, I had it spaced right but it didn’t carry over, so I hope you guys can figure out what I meant, lol.

I got the 3-4 layout here:

What about the one where the Bucs sought permission FROM THE STEELERS to interview Russ Grimm???

  13. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

    GMC is not a linebacker…..jesus!

Forget the 3-4 as a base defense, there’s nothing wrong with the 4-3 and the line we have. The pass rush improves with better coverage

Get a couple of decent LBs, draft CBs and Safeties, learn to hustle and tackle, and it’ll be fine.

  14. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

@Brad…see that, Brad? That’s what I warned you about. I’m trying here, but you are not making it easy. I really don’t want a war…but don’t push it. People make mistakes. It happens. I know I do, and that’s why I’m trying to remain peaceful with you. But…I have my limits.

    @Joe

Don’t you know, Joe? It’s okay that we don’t win a superbowl now! Some fans just want to win a few games now. 😉

  15. RCH Says:

I meant Nolan not Zorn and sorry that I missed typed that my mind was at a different place then my fingers at that moment it happens. And yes I do think we would be much better if we raided The packers OC and QB coaoch and promoted them to HC and OC because that organization seems to home grow QB’s into hall of famers. They went from Favre to Rodgers and im not giving Favre’s development credit to Sherman. I think they could turn our offense around and think our slow starts would be a thing of the past with them.

I love this site. Blogging and difference’s of opinions is what makes the site roll. Agree, disagree, hate, love… Even Thomas 2.2 overly negative and realbucs overly positive and mostly wrong posts (Marty is not the OC in St. Luis) is what makes it fun. Even Joes love for the Pop star is fun to prove wrong. Keep it rolling Joe. Most bloggers got your back…

From a different thread…BUT…it did make me smile, Brad. 😉

Maybe being wrong should be my new gimmick? I could go crazy with that…but with my luck if I intentionally try to be wrong, I’ll start being right and screw everything up! Dang…it’s hard to be perfect! But I’ll keep trying to get there!!!! 😉

  17. raphael Says:

wtf is wrong with people ? d-line in the secondary, gmc a linebacker and Zorn a former qb….a fricken d-coordinator… come on MAN !

  18. raphael Says:

If they hire Sherman, it means they are happy with middle of the road ,8-8 seasons !

I’m not saying we SHOULD switch…just trying to figure out how the Bucs would make it work IF we did.

However…the 4-3 does need to evolve a bit to last longer in the NFL. The new rules are making it harder and harder for the 4-3 now. There are some DCs pulling it off though…I just shudder to think about what new limits will be placed on it this year.

We could resign Josh Johnson as a wide Receiver as well.

    @ Pete

I’d like to see us run a 3-4 like this:

    GMC — Price/Roy Miller — Bowers/A Free Agent 3-4 Defensive End/Draft Pick

    Clayborn/Watson — Mason Foster — Draft Pick — Bowers/Mike Bennett

    CB #1 – Talib
    CB #2 – Draft Pick
    CB #3 – Ronde

SS – Draft Pick or Tyvon Branch (re-sign Sean Jones as a backup)
FS – Tanard Jackson (Grimm, Myron Lewis as backups)

  23. sensiblebuc Says:

I see why the calls for an offensive HC have been louder and louder as the coaching search has gone on now:

    1) The NFL is an offense-first league now. It may not win in the playoffs (the Pats are the only offense-first team left) but you’ve got to make the tournament to have a chance.

    2) We need an extensive talent upgrade & development on the defensive side of the ball. For us to be competitive in the short term we need to take our strength, the offense, and make it elite.

  24. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

That why I said before…Hire Marty as HC right now, and hire Mike Zimmer as our DC and HC in waiting. Marty could have 2 or 3 years to improve this team and Zimmer would drastically improve our D 10 folds. He took a “thuggish” trashy team in Cincy and made them a top 10 D all 4 seasons he way there. We could get a great OC to come in with that lineup. But if we don’t go that way, then I hope todays interview with Mike Zimmer goes great and we hire him. It seems like he is set on being a HC and the Raiders and Dolphins seem to have other options above him. So to me it seems like he is going to fall into our laps I hope!!!

  26. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ REAL

i’ll help u out a bit. the inside LBs in a 3-4 are basically regular LBs from a 4-3. 4-3 LBs are all pretty close in size, so its a matter of having a particular skill set that can carry over. they need to be fast enough and athletic enough to make plays in space, but they also need to be physical enough to take on offensive linemen and shed blocks (having 1 less d lineman makes it more likely for an o lineman to make it to the 2nd level of the defense). so if Mason Foster fits as a 3-4 ILB, Gerald McCoy (who is 50+ lbs heavier and much slower and less athletic than LBs) has no business playing there. just because we wouldn’t need 4 d linemen at a time doesn’t mean one of them could stand up and play off the line of scrimmage in one of the most important positions on that defense.

that is why everyone is mocking u for that suggestion. sometimes 4-3 DEs can make a transition to 3-4 OLB, where they would still do a large amount of pass rushing. 4-3 DTs can become 3-4 5 techniques (DEs), or a nose tackle (plays directly in front of the center). but u will NEVER see a near 300 lb defensive tackle become a linebacker….inside, outside, doesn’t matter. it just wont happen.

  27. Big Marlon B Says:

if that doesn’t make sense, or if u need more clarification than that just ask. i’ll try to explain it further.

  28. sensiblebuc Says:

@ Big Marlon B here is my response from the other post.

Griffin & Landry are guys fell into my category of likely to be franchised or re-signed. Would I love to have them? Heck yeah. Are they going to be available? Probably not.

  32. Big Marlon B Says:

    @ Sensible

thanks. i agree with Griffin most likely getting the franchise, Landry i’m not too sure about. i’m fully expecting Dan Snyder to throw a lot of $ into upgrading offensive skill positions (QB and WR). they also need CBs. while Landry is important to their D, they gave OJ Atogwe a pretty substantial contract before this season and i just don’t know if they will be able to tie up that much $ at the safety position with all of their other needs.

this could also just be wishful thinking on my behalf lol, i’ve always been a big fan of his. and i really think the Bucs need a player with that kind of intensity and swagger, who brings a ton of playmaking ability to the defensive side of the ball.

  33. Paul Says:

We’re not even at stabilizing yet. Right now, we’re in full rebuilding mode.
