Schottenheimer Has The Fire In The Belly

January 16th, 2012

Joe’s trying not to catch Martyball fever when it comes to the Bucs’ head coaching search, but Joe’s definitely rooting for Marty Schottenheimer to get one more crack at the job he loves so much, regardless of the franchise.

The guy’s become a lovable old-man underdog, who just happens to have 200+ wins under his belt.

Surely the Giants playing their asses off for 65-year-old taskmaster Tom Coughlin isn’t hurting Schottenheimer’s chances of getting another shot.

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, talked to Schottenheimer and penned a story that’s sure to fire up anyone rooting for the 68-year old.

Schottenheimer recently met with the Glazer family, owners of the Bucs, and said he thinks the club has the talent to be successful.

“Frankly, there’s an opportunity there to teach the young guys how to do it,” he said. “There are a number of other candidates, so whether a second round of dialogue will take place I don’t know. But I will say this: I’m excited about the opportunity. …”

“If the UFL experience taught me anything, it’s that at my age I’m very comfortable stepping into the midst of 25- and 26-year-old kids, to help them grow and develop, and give them the opportunity to succeed.”

Without being on the inside of the interview process, Joe has no clue whether Schottenheimer is the best man for the Bucs job. But he sure seems like the safest pick, if the team wants to win games and “stabilize” the organization.

i prefer Marty Ball over Shermination and could see Blount turning into a true household name if he got 250+ touches.

  2. Brad Says:

Go Marty!!! Come on Glazers hire the guy so he can start to assemble his new tree of coaches.

  3. Marques Says:

Let Marty be the Compass for these kids that they so need.

Message to the Glazer family. Quit trying to out think the room. Get Marty and his people in here. We will be drafting even more kids.

They need a coach, a father figure, a mentor an experienced hand. Perhaps he could also groom a younger assistant coach along the way to one day take over.

  4. stimpy Says:

This would not be a bad decision.

I wish folks would stop talking about getting the to the playoffs with this guy. We need a coach, then players, then a winning record, then consistant wins…THEN talk about playoffs.

C’mon Rockstar! Prove how good you are.

  5. stimpy Says:

Marty would not jusy be a good sense pcikup but think about the hidden factor he would bring.

He’s a winner, coordinators know he is a winner. Players know he’s a winner. People will actually WANT to come and play/coach with him for the experience alone.

    It makes good sense!

  6. yar Says:

    Buccanheimers baby, Buccanheimers.

  7. Brad Says:

Wake up Glazer boys.. Make it happen now!!

  8. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

    What are we waiting for?
Lets get Marty in the building!

  9. eric Says:

Love to see it but my reading of the tea leaves is the bucs wont make him an offer.

Hes gone from “we agreed to meet again” to “not sure if there will be a second round of dialogue”. Plus its contrary to what the Glazers have done in the past which is to try and get a long term answer.

Hope i am wrong, and its pure speculation of course.

The guy is a legend and they better get off their high horse and bring in some experienced players to get this thing going. Dont bring in Marty then start talking “fools gold” nonsense. And let the man pick his coaching staff.

And Joe, Marty will be coming back for the express purpose of winning a Super Bowl, to get the “choke” monkey off his back. Be fun to watch him try.

  10. ClayBURN94 Says:

They wont do it because hes to expensive.

  11. jdog Says:

Joe will you stop with all the Marty posts. They’re not going to hire him.

  12. CC Says:

Whoever the 3 stooges select, Mart or otherwise. They better be damn good salesmen to convince these guys to spend money and get a quality coaching staff and some quality FA’s.

  13. jvato24 Says:

HillBilly … They are waiting for Childress to finish coaching the Shrine Game to make him HC/GM!

  14. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

CC – they are going to hire a guy that shakes their hand and says:

“thanks for the opportunity. I have always wanted to be an NFL head coach. Please let me know when you have my assistants hired”

  15. Treybuc Says:

The glazers need to stop worring about the money that they have to spend and let it RIP! Pay Marty get his staff assembled and get ready for free agency. Lets go team Glazer, get of your high horses!

  16. Hillbilly Heaven Says:

    jvato:

If it’s Childress I am going to be crushed. Been a fan since ’76 and I have never felt like giving up. Chilly might get me there.

  17. eric Says:

One day we will all look back on this and laugh, while Marty is being carried off the field in the Super Bowl.

Remember when we fell behind 42-0 halfway through the second quarter in our tenth straight loss? Or when Jags scored 41 unanswered? 28-0 halftime on Sunday Night Football to Cowboys? Blown out twice by the Panthers?

    Roaring laughter

  18. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Hillbilly: if you didnt give up under the worst and least qualified coach ever rahrah, you cant quit bc of Chilly. Rah never finished above second to last, chilly was in a nfc title game which he wins if favre runs for the first down.

Chilly and all of the others are solid nfl guys, none of them would have a team take the field as unprepared and lost as rah did the last 10 weeks, and you are still a fan. The prob is that we have a 4pm GM involved and cheap owners.

  19. Pruritis Ani Says:

At this point if it is someone else other than Schottenheimer, the reaction will be very anticlimatic.

  20. BucsfaninMi Says:

    MARTY, make it happen!!!

  21. eric Says:

BSPN claims Chudz interviews tomorrow, then second interviews for a “narrowed list” later this week.

  22. Brad Says:

It would be nice if we at least knew what the Glazers were doing. We hear what every other team is up to but we have to have owners that are tight lipped. Give the fans something to chew on boys. Keeping a disgruntled fan base in the dark might have been ok in the past when we were considered a top tier team but it’s not anymore. You owe it the fans to keep us in the loop somehow. It’s ok your taking your time and want to find the right coach but a weekly press conference at the beginning of the week or the end is not asking for much. At least it would make the fans feel part of the process. Who’s the new PR they hired? I have to think he would encourage these guys that a dwindling fan base is not going to increase by keeping everyone in the dark. At least give us some insight on the guys you’ve interviewed. Are they out, a possibility… And a list of possibles would be helpful too. If there are coaches that are on playoff teams then tell us. If there not on other teams why haven’t they been interviewed already. This guessing game is frustrating. I for one as many others are more than excited that if Marty is the guy but if he’s not at least in the running let us know so we can at least know we’re not wasting key strokes.

  23. Dave Says:

Marty would be a short term (3 years maybe) answer to organize a staff, get the organization focused, and instill discipline.
He has exceeded at all these things in the past.

He has a long list of great coaches who have come out from under him.

The more I look at it, the more I think he migh be the man for the job.

  24. Sgt Mike Says:

read that article and it seems the Dol-fans are certainly behind the idea of Marty-Ball. If he truly is the best coach that the Glazerhouses have on radar they better get to scooping. Otherwise it needs to be someone with the clout of Cowher but don’t think he is budging from the talking head gig.

  25. BucFan20 Says:

Fox 13 reported Zimmer was interviewed today. Anyone know for sure if he was?

  26. Rons13 Says:

Dave, I’m with you. He’s not a long term solution because of his age, but gosh, he sure could be the answer to what we need now. With the right choices for asst’s. one could be groomed for the long term. I just like everything I’ve heard or read about Marty. No doubt he could start this team on the road to the winning and dominating again.

  27. Deeg Says:

    Ouch … spoofed in The Onion… http://www.theonion.com/articles/bucs-to-talk-with-marty-schottenheimer-about-how-l,27031/

    Notable line:

“We were fascinated by Marty’s embarrassingly dated offensive philosophies, his inability to make defensive adjustments that optimize his on-field personnel, and his tendency to lose his cool in pressure-filled game situations,” said Bucs co-chairman Joel Glazer, adding that Schottenheimer has proven he has what it takes to win in the NFL “unless it’s an important game,” and furthermore would have “absolutely no idea” what to do with promising young quarterback Josh Freeman.

  28. A REAL Bucs Fan Says:

Wait! Is this about Marty or his kid? Some of us get confused between the two! 😉

  29. BucBuckeye Says:

MARTY Schottenheimer is a stabilizing force, correct QUICKLY the problem neglect and ineptness caused…it is not a problem with NOT having talent, it is a problem in utilizing young talent correctly, with having schemes that allow young players to succeed…Marty can develop and Marty has a depth of knowledge that can do both those things.

His track record speaks for itself – he did NOT become successful because he insists on hiring his son…but if he did…that would be one of the few problems with Marty.

Dom is a star in this league – the only other potential problem (that I can think of) would be Marty’s reputation for being tough to deal with…
