“The Man Got Cheated Out Of Pro Bowls”

August 3rd, 2011

Joe’s not going to run play-by-play of Barrett Ruud’s every move in Tennessee. But when it ties to the Bucs, yes, Joe will dabble.

In a story yesterday in The Tennessean, former Bucs defensive tackle Jovan Haye, a man front and center during the great December collapse of 2008, offered overwhelming praise for Ruud.

“Come on, the man got cheated out of Pro Bowls in ’07 and ’08,” Haye said. “Sometimes you read stuff like, ‘Oh, he’s not physical,’ but at the end of the day he had like 200 tackles one year and 160 another year. At the end of day, as long as man gets on the ground, that’s all that matters.”

Joe suggests you read the whole story linked above, there’s interesting stuff from Ruud and more from Haye on Ruud positioning a defense.

As for Ruud, getting hosed for Pro Bowls? Please.

I put no credibility in Pro Bowls, they are simply popularity contests, nothing more.

No offense to us fans, but we should not be allowed to influence the voting, it should be made by players and coaches.

  2. Not A Rocket Surgeon Says:

    What Steve said…

and if Totupu can make them, Ruud shoulda woulda coulda…

I’m excited about McKenzie and Foster.

  3. Jrock (mobile) Says:

Jovan plays for them too? Terrible, i’d get my paper bag ready if i were a titans fan right now

  4. Tommy Boy Says:

Even Pro bowl snuffs get more than a one year contract.

  5. Eric Says:

Like we don’t need an experienced ML.

    Hilarious!

  6. Meh Says:

I think we should have kept Ruud but cheated out of pro bowls? That’s just silly. Ruud has never deserved a pro bowl.

  7. CalicoJack Says:

Prevailing sentiment around here 2 years ago was that Ruud deserved a Pro Bowl.

    Then came Bates…

  8. BigMacAttack Says:

I looked at the Titan’s schedule and early on Ruud gets Arian foster. He faces all 4 NFC South teams as well. This will be a tough year for Barrett and he has zero chance of making it to the pro bowl. He’ll be getting dragged to the goal line by some of the biggest, best, toughest running backs in the NFL. Good Luck with that Ruud. They should have signed a thumper.

  9. Mauha Deeb Says:

A couple years ago I could have seen him in a pro bowl. He killed in 08′. It seemed like every game he was making huge plays on third and first down. I don’t know what happened last year. He did look out of position a lot.

  10. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

Mauha what in the world are you talking about?

I can name more big plays made by John Howell during his time here than made by Barrett Ruud

  11. jb Says:

STFU about Barrett Ruud already! He’s gone! Was it a good move on our part? Time will tell. But, to keep going on & on & on & on about it is pointless!

  12. bucsalltheway Says:

He did get snuffed for pro bowls…but he wasn’t a popular lb if u know what I mean and a couple a big plays every now and then. Plus who makes it to the pro bowl when your team doesn’t have a winning record like c’mon.

  13. Nick2 Says:

All I have to say is look at the source Jovan Haye??? Come on man!
“At the end of day, as long as man gets on the ground, that’s all that matters.” So I guess when Barrett got run over at the goal line but got his man to the ground in the end zone (which I saw happen several times) then everything was good? Oh lord………..

  14. Nick2 Says:

CalicoJack please don’t infer that Jim Bates cost Barrett Ruud Pro Bowls. I have never heard Barrett Ruud and Pro Bowl uttered in the same sentence and if I had I would laugh heartily.

  15. Jampersand Says:

Hey Joe, how about setting up an instagram account w/ all your pics from camp?

  16. Mauha Deeb Says:

@bucsalltheway The 2008 Vikings were 8-8 and had 6 pro bowlers and 1 reserve. I don’t think winning teams have anything to do with pro bowls. Look at Patrick Willis, Calvin Johnson Jr, Drew Brees…. The list goes on. Heck, Derrick Brooks and Warren Sapp went to probowls when the team had a losing record.

  17. OAR Says:

Funny, how so many opinions get based on somebody else’s opinion!

  18. Chris FWC :) Says:

I’m SOOOOOOOOOO glad they don’t do what MLB, not middle linebacker, does with the All-Star division winner getting World Series home field advantage.

    Worst idea EVER!…EVER!!!

  19. MTM Says:

Ruud in the Pro Bowl. That’s a good one. Ruud has been hanging on RB’s like a windsock for the last 3 years.

Tennessee enjoy your “Munson” for the next year.

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

    Good one OAR. I agree.

  21. Gavster Says:

I thought Ruud deserved pro bowls before this past season. I always thought Ruud was a good not great LB. Just this past season a lot of people started not liking him but its all good. I hope he has a great rest of his career.

  22. Patrick Says:

No, I think 2008 was a good year for Ruud, and had he been with a big market team like Patriots or Cowboys he might’ve gone to the pro bowl. After all, the Cowboys still send at least 5 players to the pro bowl every year no matter how bad of a record they have.

  23. Christopher Says:

Just read your (or was it the other guy?) McKenzie post—which makes it all the stranger that you still think the job is Mason’s to lose…
I’m of the opinion it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see McKenzie win the job this year & for the foreseeable future, & Foster moving over to his preferred weakside linebacker slot next year…

  24. Architek Says:

Good point patrick. My take is I will not be emotional and deny Ruud did have some good seasons initially but when the torch to lead the defense was passed solely to him he never created any capturing moments. He never made any substantial plays to make us say remember this or that play? I remember Quarles interception against Cincy. I remember many plays that Nickerson made that engraves their local legacy. Not even on a national or hall of fame level. Brooks was who he was, great! But we all will remember Dexter Jackson (FS) before Ruud. It was time to move on and I agree with Dominik, the tape don’t lie, Ruud just didn’t have what was needed for this team. Maybe the older vet edition Bucs could hide his deficiencies but when you scheme and isolate and send different pressures every man must be accountable. It’s almost like Ruud could see the play but not make it there fast enough or punch hard enough when he got there.

  25. Snook Says:

So… let’s recap… We lost Ruud and Cadillac. Two guys that were so valuable… that they only got 1 year deals out on the open market.

Riiiiight… So they weren’t worth it for 31 other teams but the Bucs should’ve signed them?

    What a joke.

I wish the best to Caddy and I wish the best of luck to Ruud. Here’s a toast to his coaching career starting here in a year or two.

  26. BecklesHeartsRuud Says:

I don’t know about pro-bowls but the man sure got cheated out of his cleats by Chris Ivory,
