Glazer Says “Relax”

June 13th, 2011

Esteemed Bucs beat writer Woody Cummings, of TBO.com and The Tampa Tribune, brings more good NFL labor news in the form of an overheard conversation between Bryan Glazer and a longtime Bucs fan at a funeral last week.

(Talk about having an ear to the ground.)

Glazer brought positive vibes to the lockout front. Here’s a snippet, but Joe suggests you read the whole report:

“So relax,’’ Glazer said. “For the next seven weeks, just turn on some music, put on your headphones and relax. Football will be back. Don’t worry. Football will be back.’’

Encouraging words indeed. And they came just before a report broke suggesting the two sides in the NFL labor impasse had actually made enough progress in negotiations to possibly close on a deal within the next couple weeks.

Now Joe’s really getting excited, especially on the heels of oatmeal-gorging, popcorn-shoveling Peter King’s words earlier.

How freaking cool would it be to have free agency open on, say July 5. Not that the Bucs will do anything terribly exciting, but if the salary cap returns, it’s going to get wildly interesting in a hurry around these parts.

Help me out here. Duemig blasts you guys for “snitching,” reporting on what Raheem said on Duemig’s OWN SHOW and that 620 has on a podcast on its website.

So is Steve going to rip Cummings for reporting on a personal conversation the Bucs owner had with a private citizen at a funeral?

Didn’t Steve crucify Old School for ambushing Dominik once? How is what Cummings did not ambushing? Or did Glazer say this with a mcrophone in his hand at a lecturn at the funeral?

I guess it’s kosher only if the news is “positive?”

    Talk about situational ethics. Geez.

Waiting to hear high and mighty JP unload on Cummings for this the way JP unloaded on you guys last week. Oh, wait, it’s positive, so that’s OK. God forbid you guys report on something that is public record but it is negative.

People need to go back to school and take an ethics class before they open their traps.

I like Steve and JP a lot but there seems to be some really bizarre inconsistencies here.

Or am I just really confused?

    Joe here,

@Jimmy — You seem a little, uh, close to all these media cats. Joe advises you grab a cold one and relax.

You’re probably confused because this is all so confusing. Lot of gray area all around. And a lot of bizarre judging of Joe, in Joe’s opinion. Joe stands behind what he does/writes/says. It’s ok. Breathe easy.

Jimmy is right about one thing. Duemig only gets worked up when someone revelas something truthful but negative about the team – due to his new found access to the org after helping turn the public tide against the prior regime.

Duemig, I believe, has both a personal and financial agenda to spin the news favorably in favor of the Glazers and Rah Rah. So long as you know that is his agenda – please enjoy his program. It is kind of like Sean Hannity or Chris Matthews – both programs can be entertaining if you are aware of the agenda.

Ordinarily, JP is much more objective and fair with his analysis but something got under his skin last week, I guess.

Bottom line: this story is different as it relates to the league more than the team. I am sure that there can be know team splash-back for Cummings overhearing this conversation. As for Joe’s Raheem story (which was really created by an idiotic statement made by the baby HC and not Joe), if Rah is violating league rules (which we don’t know yet either way) which some may conclude that he is – if he had any sense or discipline he would not have announced it on sports radio – and it can’t be Joe’s fault for repeating it. For goodness sake, Steve asked the question and solicited the potentially harmful answer so under this theory he should be more culpable than Joe.

Steve is just mad that when Rah says dumb things on the radio it will make it less likely that the team will allow him to speak publicly on his show in the future (or if he is allowed there will be more and more restrictions).

sorry – “no” instead of “know” before somebody critiques me.

    Thomas:

Joe thinks the world of The Big Dog. Raheem and Steve are friends, have been for many years. Steve felt his friend was wronged in some way by Joe’s report and Steve reacted to defend a friend. Steve is very loyal to his inner circle and Joe admires that very much.

As for JP, from what Joe was told, JP is of the belief blogs are killing sports radio. That’s simply poppycock. By that logic sports radio is killing newspapers because very often, sports radio shows get subject matter from newspapers, often gathered from quotes offered by players, coaches and team management.

Joe loves JP and has known him for years but if Joe’s information is accurate, that was simply just a good rant from JP to keep listeners tuned in; nothing more.

Sounds like you have it right Joe. Thanks

Just to set the record straight. I was tallking with Bryan Glazer following the memorial when Ms. Riles and her son strolled up and asked Bryan the question about the start of the season. This all took place in a very public setting outside of St. Lawrence Church, and several other people were around and within ear shot of the conversation. I thought it was interesting enough to pass along to the masses, so I blogged about it. This was not an attempt to horn in on someone’s private moment during a sensitiive time. It was just a slice of life that I though football fans had a right to know about, because my guess is that Bryan’s response would have been the same had he run into Ms. Riles or somene else in some other public setting.

Bugs me that cummings eavesdropped on a private conversation at a funeral as well…but then Cimmings has done a lot this year that bugs me.

As to the lockout, I’ll be glad when it’s over.

Roy Cummings has the best hairstyle of all the beat writers, even though he dyes it.

Good job Roy, and keep tuning into JBF for the latest news and information on the Bucs.
