“The Bargain Is Dez Bryant”

April 21st, 2010

The Bucs need talented wide receivers in the worst way.

And the most exciting WR prospect in the draft might very well be there for the Bucs to make a play for late in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Free falling Dez Bryant can be had with the No. 21 pick, says BSPN analyst John Clayton, The Professor. And that makes Bryant the No. 1 value pick during Thursday’s first round, so Clayton said on the The Fabulous Sports Babe Show yesterday.

“The bargain is Dez Bryant. Say what you want, the best wide receiver in the draft falls down to No. 21. I think at 21 that’s a bargain for a team,” Clayton said.

Sure, Bryant has had well documented problems. But Jean-Jaques Taylor, of the Dallas Morning News, penned a column today that  analyzed the risk of drafting Bryant. Taylor didn’t find what he would consider major red flags.

Joe recommends the read.

Bryant isn’t Pacman Jones. He isn’t Randy Moss. He doesn’t even belong in the same sentence with either one.

Bryant has never been arrested. He’s never had a drug problem. He’s never had an alcohol problem. He’s never had a problem with violence.

And he doesn’t come with a posse. He’s had the same best friend since the third grade.

“There are no absolutes,” said Dr. Herbert Martin, who has worked closely with NFL and NBA players for nearly two decades on matters involving personal and professional development. “But prior behavior is usually a good indicator for future behavior.

“If he hasn’t had any issues with drugs, alcohol or violence against women when he was at his most vulnerable, then there is a great probability that by the time he enters the league, he won’t engage in conduct detrimental to the NFL.”

You can’t find a teammate, coach or scout who says Bryant is a bad person. You can’t find a teammate, coach or scout who questions Bryant’s work ethic on the practice field.

His biggest flaw: He is habitually late.

The Bucs need a true No. 1 receiver.

While Joe would pass on Bryant, Joe would understand the Bucs making a move — within reason — to grab the best one available in the draft.

I honestly wouldn’t be upset with Dez Bryant at 3. He is a great pick-up, and he isn’t the bad guy everyone makes him out to be. I think he has Michael Crabtree talent, and I think both guys are top 5 players.

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

This could be our “Warren Sapp moment” in the draft. If he’s there late 1st, drafting has to at least be considered.

  3. Eric Says:

Personally, I think Spiller will be the star of the draft, and would help the team the most. But, given that we have basically no wide receivers at all, making a move for Bryant makes total sense to me.

That being the case, no chance the Bucs actually do it.

  4. DH Says:

I really hope we package draft picks to go back into the first round for either Dez Bryant or Golden Tate…then Shipley, if he’s there in the 3rd…that gives us a real shot at having an offense…

  5. Radio Mushmouth Says:

No way we should trade up to get him…if he somehow falls into the 2nd , then by all means jump all over him.

It’s possible , alot of teams don’t even have him on thier draft board at all.

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

Eric, I’m with you. Spiller will be the best player in the draft when it’s all said and done. If we could ever find a way to move up and take him, even at the expense of next years #1, I would do it without question.

  7. Radio Mushmouth Says:

If Spiller is as great as you all claim , and the best player in the draft, why wouldn’t you just take him with the #3 pick?? You wouldn’t have to make a trade at all.

  8. Eric Says:

    @radio

I would do that, actually. If you think of bucs history when did they have major worst to first turnarounds? When A-train and Dunn arrived, and Cadillacs rookie year.

Running backs can have a huge impact, plus this kid had over 500 receiving yards.

Id pick him at 3, (unless Suh was there of course) but I am about a billion dollars short of cash to buy the bucs.

  9. zech Says:

I would package a couple picks to go up and get dez he would definetly upgrade our receiving corps! Get it done dominick!

    @ Radio
Dont buy into the hype of teams taking Dez Bryant off there draft board.. just a smokescreen in case he drops which he will so no team gives any hints that they are coveting him

  11. bucfanjeff Says:

    @Radio
Because the DT need is that great, in our case, too great to ignore.
IF the DT’s are gone, I better see Spiller’s name across the screen.

  12. TJ Tillman Says:

I think Bryant is a for sure thing that the Bucs need I remeber seeing Stanford run the ball right at Mccoy also remeber Texas tech blow out Oklahoma cause there was no pass rush. Mccoy had only 6 sacks Dt ‘s in the top 10 are known to be bustlook at history

  13. JimBuc Says:

2a or 2b would be great

  14. Finerdetailz Says:

If the Bucs could get Mccoy/Sue and then land Dez, I might get a little excited but I know this organization is too weak to handle a player that might need some leadership. Our front office is too young and our head coach is too young to handle a potential premadonna(sp?). So I don’t think Dominik even considers it plus trading away draft choices this year I don’t think will happen. Dominik needs every opportunity to draft as many good players as possible. I’m not confident that will happen but Dominik needs to hit a home run on at least the first 4 picks.

  15. drdneast Says:

Can’t wait for him to show up for his first NFL game and he forgets to bring his shoes. If the Bucs are afraid to give up a throw away fifth round for Holmes, they need to stay away from this clown.

  16. thomas Says:

I posted this before but how do you mccoy supporters respond to these facts:
(remember these 2 played in the same conference)
    IN 2008:
mccoy had 25 total tackles and 6 sacks; suh had 76 and 7.5.
    IN 2009:
mccoy had a whopping 32 tackles, 6 sacks, 10 hurries; suh 82 tackles and 12 sacks, and 28 hurries. suh had 43 tackles for loss during the last 2 seasons, mccoyhad 26. during the last 2 seasons mccoy had 12 qb hurries and suh had 3 times more at 35.

That is a gross disproportion in the same conference. It is unlikely that mccoy will improve upon his stats, particularly early which means his contribution will not be much.

McCoy is an absolute bust waiting to happen!

  17. TJ Tillman Says:

@ Thomas could not agree with you more about mccoy I think bucs fan will be disappointed As I said before he was a non factor against Texas Tech who are pass happy Bryant will be a better pick he has alot to prove cause everyone is doubting him

  18. Eric Says:

you guys arent making me feel any better!

  19. Troxell8t8 Says:

    Joe,

I’m really kind of suprised your not touting Joe. His problems aren’t anywhere near as severe as Marshall or Holmes. Granted, he’s never played in the pros like the other two.

I certainly hope the Bucs trade back into the first round to get this guy. To quote the last #1 WR the Bucs had in AB “just watch the tape”, this guy can play. How about a trade involving our first second and possibly our well documented fifth round selection to move up and get Bryant (obviously it will take more than those two picks to move up). In fact, the Bucs can even cut expenses by giving Dez AB’s old number without even changing the name plate. Now that is irony.

  20. Patrick Says:

No question that Dez Bryant is a very talented player. Yeah he has issues, but he’s not a criminal. That thing with Deion Sanders really wasn’t a big deal. Though you have to be pretty stupid to forget your cleats on draft day. And he needs to learn how to talk.

I like Bryant, but I don’t think we should give up any high draft picks for him . A guy that would be a good selection in the 2nd round would be WR Demaryious Thomas from Georgia Tech. I really like this guy. He’s got good size (6-3, 225 lbs) and is very explosive. With our 2a pick, we should grab him. Then grab another receiver in the 3rd or 4th round. Then another one in the 6th or 7th round. We need major help at this position!

  21. Mr. lucky Says:

Since the Bucs will be on the clock in less than 10 hours here’s my wishlist:

    1. SUH – DEFENSE
    2A. DEFENSE
    2B. DEFENSE
    3. WR or TEBOW
    4. DEFENSE

After those top 5 give me a bunch of Sammy Stroughters or Biggers.

To Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris – I’ll be busy tomorrow so if I don’t answer the phone for any of your questions don’t take it personally. However I’m sure that Joe1 or Joe2 or Eric would be happy to be you “fan proxy vote”

If these top five “wishes” come true I’ll donate a case of Caybrew to my favoriate Buc Charity – Joe1 & Joe2 @ Joebucsfan.com

Dear Joel Glazer (JimBuc) please let Dominik dig his own hole – don’t put any pressure on the dude and allow him the opportunity to trade up and down.

Dear Malcolm Glazer – please keep you kids, including JimBuc) under control and use that Glazer magic in getting some team veterans here.

To the Tampa Bay Community – It’s now or never, come hold me tight…Tomorrow may be to late….it’s now or never our season passes won’t wait!!!!!!!

  22. Patrick Says:

    Mr Lucky

I’m not sure if you’re being sarcastic, but are you serious about waiting till the 3rd round to get a WR ??!!! That’s crazy. With our 2a pick, we need Demaryious Thomas. WR is our biggest need on this team. Does Clayton and Stovall put any fear into you?!!!!!??????? Yeah we could have the best defense in the world, but if our offense can’t score more than 7 points per game is it going to matter? The way our receiving corps looks right now, i can’t see us scoring at all!!

  23. Mr. lucky Says:

@Patrick, Now that response wasn’t being sarcastic. While I know the WR corps isn’t elite I think that the biggest help to Freeman would be to keeep the other team to under 20 points a game. In most of the Bucs losses they were down 10 points + in the first 2 quarters. When you play catchup all game long …well we sall the results.

Shore up the defense and get a power running game going – look at the Jets as an example.

As Major Charles W. Winchester said, “I do one thing right…then I move on.”

  24. mlloye Says:

Alot of teams passed on Randy Moss for the same reasons and you know they regret it, If hes there, we need to be agressive and take him.

  25. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Trox – Would like to see the Bucs, given all those holes and needs, stick with the safest possible picks. Bryant, unfortunately, doesn’t fall into that category. Don’t trust this regime to develop guys with challenges. Prefer they go with the self-motivated good guys, ala Freeman, Stroughter and Miller.

Mr. Lucky, receiver in the third round? Man, they have to grab a receiver in the second unless they’re going to break from the plan and play free agency. But I wouldn’t mind either to see them go nearly all defense. Seems like the safest bet given the head coach.

  26. Radio Mushmouth Says:

DO NOT trade up for this guy ! He’s a total head case , and because of that I garantee he slides into the 2nd round.

…If some team is dumb enough to take the risk if taking him in round 1 , let them ..just don’t let it be us.
