Brian Price At Defensive End?

April 23rd, 2010

Wondering like many Bucs fans why defensive tackle Brian Price was snatched right after Gerald McCoy?

Mark Dominik offered some insight at One Buc Palace tonight, per St. Pete Times’ beat writer Stephen Holders’ Twittering from Dominik’s news conference. It seems Price might get a look as an edge rusher on passing downs.

Price might see some time at DE in certain situations. They’re high on him. Didn’t know if they’d get him

Joe gets the need for talent and depth, but Joe’s still a little confused. And Joe’s still waiting for the Bucs to move up to snatch wide receiver Marty Gilyard.

But also, per Holder’s Tweeting, the plan all along was to draft Price and McCoy.

Bucs GM Mark Dominik thinks they essentially got 3 first rounders (McCoy, Price, Benn) Plan all along was to get McCoy and Price together.

It’s great to see Dominik executed his plan. But what exactly is it?

Im no expert but isnt it very difficult to make such a move, especially for rookie?

  2. BucsBuzz Says:

It is simple. With McCoy, Price and Miller in the middle of the D-Line the Carolina Panthers (and other teams) will no longer be able to run the ball up our gut in the 4th quarter. I think it’s a brilliant move.

  3. Radio Mushmouth Says:

He doesn’t have the body type to be a edge rusher.
It will be a huge failure , like everything else this regime attempts.

…and if this really was his plan all along , the Glazers should fire his ass TONIGHT. It’s the stupidest plan ive ever heard….

  4. TJ Tillman Says:

Think the Bucs did get 3 first rounders Mccoy would be a better situation DE like he did at Oklahoma on the Nickel. Still a little Puzzelded that they drafted Price but he is a good player. Then Taking the Kid out of Vandy was a little iffy but time will tell. Stick to my opnion that they dont beleive in Roy Miller as we are being led on that they think they are please remember the Jet game they ran right at us.

  5. TJ Tillman Says:

Know this for a fat Hovan, Moore , and thank you So much Sims are goners

  6. Eric Says:

    @Radio

    Don’t sugar coat it man!

    Give us your honest opinion.

Personally, im more pissed about this receiver we got. Total project IMO.

  7. SO TIRED OF U PEOPLE Says:

YOU PEOPLE ARE THE DUMBEST FANS IN THE NFL!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT FOOTBALL. YOU ALL PLAY MADDEN WAY TOO MUCH, I’VE HEARD THINGS ABOUT TRADING FREEMAN, YOUR ALL STUPID… NEXT YEAR WHEN THIS D-LINE IS AWESOME YOU’LL ALL SAY THIS WAS A GREAT DRAFT. A BUNCH OF IDIOTS

    @ Radio and Eric

Relax my Chicken Littles! Look at the similarities between the Sapp/Booger combo and the McCoy/Price combo:

    Warren Sapp: 6’2″ 300 lbs = McCoy: 6’4″ 295
    Booger McFarland: 6’0 300 lbs = Brian Price 6’0″ 300

Now look at the first step quickness, penetration and disruptiveness of the two players:

    LOL, good one Joe!

  10. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

TJ, I remember that game very well with the Jets. If Terrence Cody was a Buc,that would be a thing of the past.

  11. gotbbucs Says:

“You can never have enough pass rushers”, this is a quote from Monte Kiffin himself.
McCoy showed on film that he was a stud left d-end when Oklahoma was in their nickel package. How can drafting two DT’s that are graded out as 1st rounders a bad thing? Especially when our starters last year were Hovan and Sims. Roy Miller is a rotational player, not a starter.

  12. sensiblefan Says:

    Per BSPN on Price:

What he brings: Price moves very well for his size and the potential to become a disruptive upfield run defender. He can also make an impact rushing the passer, though he’s never going to put up huge sack numbers. The concern is that he must put forth a more consistent work ethic on and off the field.

How he fits: This defense was last in the league against the run last year due to its small front that was beginning to show signs of aging with Chris Hovan and Ryan Sims. Price can now team with first-rounder Gerald McCoy and last year?s third-rounder Roy Miller for a good, young three-man rotation. McCoy is likely to play nose tackle in this system with Price playing the three-technique. This was the Bucs’ single biggest need and they obviously realized it because they addressed it two times in the first two rounds.

  13. bucologist Says:

Steve White, where are you? We have drafted 2 potentially awesome DTs for our line. I would love to hear your thoughts. I am more than excited about our draft.

  14. TJ Tillman Says:

This is the last thing I will say. What did buger Mcfarland do after the Bucs let go of Sapp ? nothing zip. Maybe the Bucs know that Roy Miller would not complement Mccoy. Tampa Pass Defense is not the worst in the leauge. talib and Jackson ask a few teams if they want them. We Now have two pass rushing DT’s Mccoy can slide to the outside occasionly . miller had 1 sack last year and is more of a run stuffer space eater we have two Dt’s hopefully that can get after the QB that will help are secondary even more

  15. Troxell8t8 Says:

Considering sometimes the Bucs will run a 3 man line with their nickel package of course you could see Price or McCoy at a DE position with White at the other DE position.

  16. JimBuc Says:

I don’t know what is funnier a report about a report on what someone said or people calling a team a failure based on a report about a report about waht someone said. LOL

How many of you actually read what Dom said? I can tell RM did not. Dom did not say they were planning to convert Price to end. He implied that Price was versatile enought that he could even play some end (emphasis on some) in certain situations (emphasis on certain). Here’s the actual quote:

“In this system we believe he can play the three techniques, and you can take him outside to play some end in certain situations.”

Some end . . certain situations

  17. SO TIRED OF U PEOPLE Says:

Just because White played the game doesn’t make him a draft expert. If you heard him tonight you understand what I am saying. He had no idea of who we should’ve picked, didn’t know if certain players were even available. USE YOUR BRAIN PEOPLE AND THINK FOR YOURSELF. This team was DEAD LAST against the run. You people don’t get it!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. RahDomDaBest Says:

I like the second DT pick. They could have really made it a night by NOT trading the 5th rounder… Then maybe draft Carlos Dunlap… The line would be sick… Who knows, tomorrow we could scoop up the DE from USC.

I like the CB too… Hell we have so many needs, it’s hard not to like any of these guys.

But trading up 2 spots at the cost of a 5th is yet another boneheaded decision. Just like last year in trading up for Freeman… What the hell is wrong with Dominik???

  19. Louie Says:

Yea, I’m really disappointed that 5th rounder is gone. Heck, that pick was going to be a future Superbowl MVP seeing as how they didn’t use it on Holmes. I guess they didn’t want the scrutany that would have come with that pick.

Wish they would have traded down at 35, but they probably got the best available athlete in Price. I just hope Walsh is a solid enough coach to get the most out of these DT’s.

  20. Jonny Says:

MR. STEVE WHITE. WHERE ARE YOU. PLEASE CLEAR SOME CONFUSION FOR US BUCS FANS ABOUT WHAT EXACTLY WE COULD EXPECT FROM TWO 3-TECHNIQUE GUYS.

Joe, for the sake of us ardent readers please find Mr. White.

  21. Leighroy Says:

Hovan and Sims are as good as gone, I think we have our 3-man rotation at DT set for the next 3 years. I think any of these guys can play either nose tackle or under tackle but McCoy will get the nod most often at the under simply bc we have the most invested in him. Price can spell him whenever necessary but will probably play the nose more often I guess and when he spells McCoy, Miller slides in at the nose. That’s my best guess.

If we can get Griffen or Wooten in the 4th at DE, I think at least 2 of the top 6 wr’s will still be available in the 6th or early 5th if we need to slide back in there and I’d be ecstatic with our draft. 7th rounders can be anywhere because frankly if any of them turn into anything then its just icing on the cake.

  22. Mike Says:

I wasn’t crazy about the pick when I first heard it, but I’m starting to warm up to it. I still would have liked to have traded up yesterday and taken Dez Bryant or picked up Golden Tate today, but I’m willing to give them a chance.

  23. Tom Says:

I think a better post would have been about how Mark Dominik mistakenly called Myron Lewis Myron Rolle.

Someone’s got Rolle on the mind!

Either that, or you could tell that Dominik wasn’t exactly dreaming about nabbing Lewis in the 3rd round, and it just happened to be that he was the highest rated CB in left on their board and thus became the pick.

  24. JimBuc Says:

Louie — you think they traded the fifth because they did not want the scrutiny? Seriously? C’mon man. Talk about silly.

  25. Radio Mushmouth Says:

You people who are saying Sims and Hovan are gone are morons.

DO you not realize the two tackle positions are completely different???
Neither McCoy OR Price can play nose gaurd , and if they do , we can forget about pass rush becomes teams will run on every play for 15 yards down our throat.

Hovan and SIms are our only true Nose Tackles….they aren’t going ANYWHERE. That’s what makes this pick even more stupid…

  26. Chargedcbh Says:

A bunch of IDIOTS!!!!!!!! What are you people talking about? Seriously! Do you actually read what you type before you submit it?

  27. Tom Says:

    Ummmm Radio….Hovan will be gone.

I hate to break it to you. I’m sure you are hurt by this. But he will not be a Buc.

    1. He was a 3 technique for many years in the NFL, then when his pass rush eroded he put on some weight and played nose. He is NOT a nose tackle. He is a 3 technique masquerading as nose.

And yes, Price will play nose tackle. They did not spend two high picks so these two players can rotate in and out of the same position…
