Is Brian Price Or Gerald McCoy Trade Bait?

Since Brian Price and Gerald McCoy are basically the same type of player, did Mark Dominik draft one of the two for trade bait?

The Bucs earlier this evening went in a few minutes from bad to stocked when the Bucs selected UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price just hours after the Bucs picked Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

At first, Joe was upset that the Bucs had not selected a wide receiver with that 33rd pick. Then it quickly dawned on Joe that the Bucs could have a dominant defensive line.

It was strange that McCoy and Price are nearly identical players. Both are compared to Warren Sapp.

So why would the Bucs draft basically two identical players? The obvious is that the Bucs needed to beef up the line. But could it be Bucs general manager Mark Dominik might be dangling one of these guys out for trade bait?

Now Joe has zero inside information on this. It’s just a hunch. It wouldn’t shock Joe, let’s just say that.

We already have Roy Miller. And even if this is for depth, doesn’t Chris Hovan provide that? Even if he’s not a starter, Hovan is a good veteran presence to have in the locker room and makes for a decent backup.

  2. Eric Says:

If they trade McCoy i think every person in Tampa will need to be picked up off the floor.

This sounds like a Joe2 piece – trade bait?

You’ve posted enough good material Joe – no need to FABRICATE stories and get people all riled up.

The draft isn’t over yet so I’m reserving judgement until all the picks have been done.

However, I will say that trading a potential Santonio Holmes (5th round asking price) in order to move up 3 spots seems like a WASTE to me. I’m not against the pick just the value/cost to move up 3 places!!!

    A 7th pick – no problem but a 5th round pick…..

  4. Tom Says:

This isn’t the NBA Joe, you do not draft players to trade them. It rarely happens nor will it.

The top priority for this team outside of WR is pass rush and both McCoy and Price are pass rushers with Price able to play nose tackle. When you improve your inside rush you significantly help your ends.

I will say that it marginalizes Roy Miller’s future with the team down the next few years if both picks pan out. But the Bucs liked Price, he was clearly the top player on their board and sometimes you take the top guy even if it throws a wrench in the 3rd round pick you took last year.

    doubt it, Joe…

  6. MichiganBucsFan Says:

Who the heck would they trade them for?

  7. Mr. lucky Says:

@Patrick – Chris Hovan is HISTORY!

He got pushed around last year and he’s scheduled to make too much $ this year for playing as a back-up.

I’m not saying Hovan won’t be playing in the NFL in 2010 but he won’t be playing for the Bucs

  8. Fatso Says:

If this is on JBF, its a rumor. If its on Pewter Report, its gospel.

I can’t wait for the folks at Pewter Report to start bragging about “hitting” on picks. Of course, when you include pretty much every prospect in your draft preview and say they would all be good fits, its easy to puff the chest out and claim you pegged the player and the pick. SR is one draft away from just saying “Well we knew the Bucs would pick at least one defensive player. Sign up for an Insider subscription because only WE know the team!:””

  9. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Joe , you are trying to hard to find logic behind DUmbinik’s stupidity.

It’s a hopeless endeavor, my friend

  10. Patrick Says:

    @Mr. lucky

Too much money? For Hovan? That’s hard to believe

Yeah, well it’s going to cost a lot of money for a second round DT who’s going to be “rotating.”

I don’t get it. We’ve been hearing all offseason how there has been high hopes for Roy Miller, who I think is pretty good. And then they just do this. Price is a good player, but still we already had Miller on a team.

  11. ReaderM Says:

People, no DT plays every series or snap, we now have 3 DT that we can rotate in and out and use to create Havoc with match-ups and not lose of quality of play.. after how many years of people just running all over us, it nice to know that our D line has the potential to be very sweet for the next couple of years.. I can’t wait to read Steve write up of this and see what he has to say, finally it looks like the days of Top 10 defenses might be slowly coming back

  12. BigMacAttack Says:

All can say thus far is “Good Job Dom!”

  13. Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Once can never have “too many” quality DT’s. I liked Terrence Cody more then Price because of his massive size, but I am happy overall with the Drafting. The receiver from Illinois has a lot of upside, I was glad to see us take him before Tate. I don’t see Price of McCoy as trade bait. I see them as anchors of our D Line for years to come. It is said Drew Brees was seen biting his nails when he heard the news about the new Bucs!

  14. DH Says:

    I love it…take a weakness and make it a strength…

And for those of you who are crying about Roy Miller (Who I really like and think is a great guy) – That’s the kind of thinking that made us pass up Adrian Peterson because we already had Cadillac Williams…

Now in Day 3 – Another CB, WR, DE, and who ever has the most upside…

  15. pewterpirate99 Says:

I totally agree with you DH. First of all Chris Hovan sucks and has to go. As far as Roy Miller goes, SO WHAT?? Yeah he’s a nice kid and had some descent plays here and there. But if we can beef up our d-line by bringing in two big studs to make other the other players around them better, WHAT”S THE PROBLEM??!! I also like the the Arrelious Benn and Myron Lewis picks. Hopefully Beavis and Butthead keep drafting like this for the rest of the draft.

  16. jesse Says:

price is a good pick, our d line needed tremendous upgrades with those 3 rotating in the middle the ends wont get nealry the attention and it wont take a superior talent to succeed out there. i’m very releived not to get golden tate the dude is small, slow and had his successes due more so to a good qb and system then talent.

  17. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Hovan plays a different position than the two undertackles we just selected , morons.

Get it thorugh your head. He will be your starting Nose Tackle next season.

  18. Kez Says:

Dude, Hovan won’t even be here and Miller played a lot of nose last year. Get a clue before you call people morons.

  19. Radio Mushmouth Says:

and in case you didn’t notice , Roy Miller failed miserably at nose .

Want to make a bet Hovan is here ?? Name your price.
