2012 Bucs Draft Officially A Haul

January 10th, 2013

If Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik can pull off this April what he did in the spring of 2012, the Bucs would almost have to play their way out of the playoffs.

What Joe and many others considered to be the best Bucs draft in years became official today when Pro Football Weekly/Pro Football Writers of America announced their All-Rookie team for the 2012 season.

Not surprisingly, the Bucs landed three players on the team: safety Mark Barron, running back Doug Martin, the Muscle Hamster himself, and outside linebacker Lavonte David.

And there is a chance two of the three, Martin and David, could still play in the Pro Bowl next month.

Ladies and gentlemen, Joe considers that a haul of Eddie Van Halen proportions.

Agreed, however that will be a bit harder because we are picking 8 picks lower than last year. We do however have one extra 4th round pick. (5th basically)

  2. SilenceTheCritics Says:

A good drafter can pull off good drafts no matter what position they are picking. I am looking forward to seeing what they do this year.

  3. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Those who don’t like the Rock Star are just jealous that he’s livin’ the life. All the haters bow down and give the respect that’s due. Boom!

  4. raphael Says:

    boom !

  5. Have A Nice Day Says:

How could David play in the Pro Bowl? Was he anywhere near the top of the Pro Bowl votes?

  6. thegregwitul Says:

Damn good work done by Mark Dominik, from the trade down for Barron to trading back up to get both Doug Martin and Lavonte David. I was hoping for either Martin and David and to land both is just awesome. These drafts are the foundation of a strong future, now it’s time to find out if Josh Freeman will be a part of it.

  7. ShayneGoodfellow Says:

Great draft last April. Got 3 studs that should be in Tampa for a very long time. Looking forward to this upcoming draft. I have a strong feeling that our first pick is going to be CB Banks, and then Dom makes a trade to get us back in the end of round 1 like last year, and we select that TE that is considered to EASILY be the best of his position this year, can’t remember his name but hes a solid player. Last name starts with E ?

  8. PRBucFan Says:

I trust Dom to do his thang this offseason/draft.

    Pumped!

  9. Macabee Says:

    Shayne,

That depends on what success we have in FA. If we get a top CB in FA, don’t be surprised if we take a pass rusher DE or even a DT. We may even trade down to 20 or so and pick up a big FS like Eric Reid, Ken Vaccaro or a big CB/FS hybrid like Xavier Rhodes or David Amerson.

There will be lots of top CBs in the 2nd round like Ryan Logan, Jordan Poyer, Will Davis, Blidi Wrey-Wilson. There will be CBs in later rounds like Leon McFadden, Bennett Jackson, Michael Carter, and Jason Verrett. All better than anything we’ve got today. Not to worry. I think Dominik’s got the hang of this thing now.

  10. Andrew 2 Says:

    @have a nice day…vincent and doug are 1st alternates, lavonte is a 2nd alternate

@jacko actually we had no 4th at the start of the draft last year, so its 2 extra 4ths compared to last year(luke stocker trade)

  11. Andrew 2 Says:

my bad it was ronde that was the 2nd alternate i believe…..maybe they needed a 3rd alternate for OLB because Greenway took Wares spot which maybe made David the new 2nd alternate

  12. Macabee Says:

And you’re right Shayne, there are some analyst that have the Bucs taking a TE in the late 1st or early 2nd, either Tyler Eifert or Zach Ertz.

  13. tampabaybucfan Says:

Great top three picks….remains to be seen if Goode, Tandy & Smith will work themselves into the lineup other than special teams.
I’ll take three great players any time….now that we have the OL, most of the DL & WR/RB positions filled….we can work on the secondary another LB & TE.
We also have an excellent Punter & Kicker.
Tweaking at some Coaching positions would help.
Things are looking up for the Bucs in 2013!!!!

  14. PRBucFan Says:

No Ronde Vincent and Doug are first alternates, LD is a second alternate

  15. Andrew 2 Says:

was a second alternate or is a second alternate

because theres a big difference….damarcusware is out, greenway took his spot

frank gore, dashon goldson and aldon smith are all starting probowlers, so if sf makes the super bowl they cant play and martin, david and barber make the pro bowl

    go 49ers lol

  16. Andrew 2 Says:

Joe you must clear up this Lavonte David speculation, I can’t find one thing on the internet about it.

Possibly a piece on who makes the pro bowl if San Fran represents the NFC

  17. PRBucFan Says:

    Whoops
Vincent and Doug are first alternates
    Ronde is a second
    LD I have no idea…

  18. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

I don’t agree because Mark Barron was a whiff, Martin and David were good picks, The rest of the picks were whiffs as well.

In my opinion, players in the 3rd through 7th should show up.

  19. St Augustine Says:

Mark Barron played well and could’ve played much better had we not had two intellectually challenged corners. I’m sure rock star will remedy that in the draft. Once he’s able to truly play his position (and not baby sit or freelance) in addition to getting better advice from a new position coach ~ I’m very optimistic we’ll see an Ed Reed type of player.

  20. Northend Says:

    Hey Joe
Has anyone seen Domenick and Daniel Tosh in the same room?? Just sayin!!

  21. USN_BIT Says:

Now I don’t understand what the rules of the draft are. I’m 15 and very intelligent, but I still haven’t grasped the rules of it yet, can someone please explain this ” trading up and down” i’m hearing about?

  22. USN_BIT Says:

But anyways, i’ll state my point, (please excuse my typos, i have fat fingers, heheh.). anyways, Here’s what the buccaneers need to do in this 2013 draft. We need a at least 2 cornerbacks to water down the terrible odor of our current cornerbacks failure. We need a couple offensive and defensive lineman to better protect Josh Freeman and rush the other team’s passer. We need A serviceable or at least decent quarterback. We don’t need a star. So no Johnny Footbal Manziel. Just look at Brad Johnson, he was a decent or at best slightly above average quarterback, but he could make textbook passes and avoid pressure. What made them score so much was that the 2002 Buccaneers had McCardell and other great wide recievers. And he didn’t panic when the ball was snapped. That’s the quarterback we need. Other than that we just need a better defensive and offensive system that won’t leave after 1 or 2 seasons. That’s why we can’t win. Imagine every year having to learn 50-100 new plays and codenames for them and totally forget the previous coordinators plays. It would drive you mad!! So calm down and think about how the players feel now. Let the manager and head coach develop this team. And don’t fire Greg after 2 years too. heheh

  23. princespanky Says:

This year will be another haul. It will be either a OT or a DL in the first round and then guys who they have hand picked from there.

Luckily for the Bucs this draft is deeply talented in OL and DL so we should get an impact player in the first and from there Dom and Schiano can hand pick like they did last year.

I think if there are sliders on the board we could trade down again which I would be thrilled about.

  24. tbfan4eva Says:

I really hope that we can get one of these tight ends one that would put this offense over the top.

  25. bubashep Says:

I hope you are referring to the 1980′s version of Eddie.

  26. Andrew 2 Says:

NO WAY does he take an OL in the first. As Joe pointed out. 4 full drafts and he’s taken one lineman, Jeremy Zuttah in the 3rd round, that’s it. He doesn’t like drafting lineman. He wants to have seen them at the professional level and evaluate them off that. Donald Penn, Jamon Meredith, Demar Dotson, Ted Larsen…all really good finds he pulled out of the abyss.

  27. Charlie B Says:

This year I see us taking either Eifert or Werner in the first, then trading back into the end of the first for a CB, taking another CB with our second, and the 3rd will depend on whether we let Bennett walk in free agency. With the four DEs we have, when healthy, I don’t see us needing a DE. We got decent pressure on the QBs when our CBs weren’t open from the snap.

  28. teacherman777 Says:

    So many possibilities!

We could do so many things in this draft, because we have so many NEEDS.

The TE from Notre Dame, Eifert, was their best player in the National Championship. He stayed with the Alabama talent. He is an NFL caliber player. He is very athletic, and strong. Anybody see him willing his team to a few first downs? Dragging Alabama DB’s? He is the real deal.

But it would be a HUGE reach to take him at 13. Trading back into the first to take him at the end of the 1st? Definitely a great move! But I just dont see TE as a big part of our offense anymore.

I think we could definitely add a CB and a solid FS in the first 2 rounds. Or a pass rusher and a some DB.

I really dont know! I just hope we take a risk on Tyrane Mathieu or Denard Robinson or Michael Dyer.

Imagine drafting Miss. St. CB Banks and LSU Eric Ried at FS in the 1st and then take his old teammate Mathieu in the third?? We would instantly have a solid defensive backfield! With 3 rookies who could grow together!

  29. JonBuc Says:

I would have liked to see more out of the later picks…Goode, Tandy and Smith….not to mention the reminder of the Fluke ( future grocery store ) Stocker whiff…. But then again-I’m one greedy bastard.

  30. Ramdog Says:

He was a magician in last years draft funny that 3 BUCS made the list and yet Morris Claiborne the one everyone was aching and predicting the BUCS to draft did not. Just saying snagging Barron, getting Martin and David was quite a haul and a risk. Many saw Barron as a reach. The only thing that could’ve made it better was landing a good corner in there. Maybe Leonard Johnson blossoms next year. Excited to see what Dominik/Schiano do this year in Free Agency and the draft.

  31. Christopher Says:

uh…dear lord, DLR please shut up. Anyone hear Wolfie sing? Great voice. VH power trio please…
