Jameis Watch: Selling The Brand

March 4th, 2015

jameis 1215Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

With great interest, Joe listened last night to “Late Hits” co-hosts Alex Marvez and Bill Polian, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, talk about prospective overall No. 1 pick Jameis Winston’s visit to One Buc Palace. Both Marvez, a long-time NFL reporter. and Polian, a Hall of Fame general manager, never remembered such a high-profile player officially visiting an NFL facility so early; some two months before the draft.

Polian said it is not that rare for a typical player to visit an NFL team this early, but extremely rare for a high-profile. He could not think of another example. Marvez could not remember such an event.

Of course, many have tried to look under the rocks to find out why. Joe doesn’t think it is any more sinister than Team Glazer trying to decide if Winston is their man, or if they should cut bait and focus on Marcus Mariota.

Naturally, former NFL assistant coach and front office executive Pat Kirwan dropped his two cents on why Winston arrived so early. Kirwan, who co-hosts “Movin’ the Chains” with Jim Miller, also heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, believes the Bucs are trying to win over fans.

Joe doesn’t think Jameis or the Bucs have to sell anyone. With any draft pick, there is going to be debate. Hell, Joe is pretty sure the same neanderthals who believe drafting a quarterback is akin to sleeping with Ebola patients would have bellyached if the Bucs drafted Andrew Luck.

Joe has conducted polls and they show the majority want Winston. Joe has seen similar results elsewhere, but not all polls are equal.

Joe understands where Kirwan is coming from, but did anyone see any evidence on TV, radio, newspapers that there were protesters at One Buc Palace during Winston’s visit?

If Winston really is this public menace, wouldn’t there have been some outrage in the streets? Joe is unaware of any. But two years ago, Joe did see several protesters at One Buc Palace picketing over Bill Sheridan’s defense.

The simple conclusion is this: Like any player, Jameis will do the selling with his play. Why do people hate [pick a player]? Because his play stunk. This town would have gone gaga if leaky, sleepy Josh Freeman would have continued to improve instead of melting down. And so on.

No, the Bucs don’t have to sell the public on Winston. That will come with wins. No more complex than that.

    NOT SOLED ON RAPIST.

  2. kaput Says:

He’s the pick, and without any doubt.

To the ‘haters,’ you’d better learn to deal with it or find a new team to cheer for.

  3. J 2.0 Says:

Get your Jameis jerseys now. He will be the pick.

Guess you are not “soled” on the English language either

  5. Luther Says:

I’m going to Publix on draft day to get some crabs and will order my jersey when his name is called.

  6. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “Jose Says:

    NOT SOLED ON RAPIST.”

    Is this a shoe joke?

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I disagree Joe…I think the longer Buc fans in specific and NFL fans in general have to digest Winston as the number one pick, the more positively he will be recieved….

I actually think the early visit is all of the below…

    I. If it’s not Winston…..move on.
    2. If it is Winston…..sign him….start the PR.
    3. Get a jump on what kind of FA mentor/Glennon trade etc…all this plays off of the QB pick.
    4. If it’s not Winston….start the offensive play designed to take advantage of Mariota.

It could go either way as far as Winston being called early & first…..it is likely, however that the Bucs would not go any further if the Glazers feel the need to veto Winston as the choice…and if that is the possibility, then the sooner the better.

  8. Ray Rice Says:

I don’t give a $hit what the QB is selling. Even if it is crab legs.Whoever the QB is please get the FUKN ball to Savage Mike and VJax early and often.

  9. Ray Rice Says:

    “SOLED”…….. LMFAO

  10. Couch Fan Says:

Jameis wont need to be sold to the fans but you bet your butt there will be an outcry. Lol, and I can’t wait to hear the sounds of the Symphony of Tears.

    Welcome to Tampa, Jameis!!

  11. Bill Says:

I don’t understand this fascination some of you have with signing a player “before” you draft him. WHY would anybody want to do that? Agree to terms? Sure. But why prevent Philly from offering 10 first rounders. What possible advantage is there to reducing our options? What am I missing?

(This is not just aimed at you TBBF)

  12. WS99 Says:

I kinda agree with Bill. Kelly is crey crey and is obviously trying to build the Philly Ducks. Let’s see what he has to offer.

  13. Yungry Says:

    Rapist! Rapist! Rapist!

  14. Gus Says:

Bill if Winston is the guy and they believe he is a can’t miss once in a lifetime prospect. 10 first round picks isn’t enough to sway because non of those 10 could pan out.

  15. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I agree with you Bill. What if Jameis gets attacked by a flock of rabid pelicans while he’s visiting the Bucs and can never play football again….why sign a guy pre draft? It makes absolutely no sense

  16. BK Says:

I am neither soled, soiled, or sold on the rapist/JW. I think this is smoke to drive the price up on the #1 slot.

If any of you think that this meeting means he is the pick, then you don’t know the NFL business. The only thing I can guarantee is that the decision has not yet been made. Mariota will be brought in next week for 1 day. You heard it here first. Once that happens (and it will), how will you read the tea leaves?

Great read on bleedinggreennation_com on Philly trading the farm for #1. With all the moves…its becoming more possible.

  17. MarineBucsFan Says:

I may be late with this news but Yahoo’s Charles Robinson reported that Adrian Peterson would consider deal restructuring to facilitate a trade. The teams he is willing to restructure to play for are Cardinals, Colts, Cowboys, Chargers, and Buccaneers.

Joe’s, I respect your opinion on all things Bucs related; what are your thoughts on this rumor if true (From a Bucs perspective)?

  18. Gus Says:

Asks yourself this question; how many great qbs have the bucs pick in the last 10 years in the first round………not many right. So them having an extra one won’t mean they will be good anytime soon. St.Louis really upgraded on talent with all the players they got for RG3 but how many playoff appearances do they have………

  19. ericakinsman Says:

    this is so disgusting.

  20. lurker Says:

jameis christ is walking on tampa bay to resurrect the franchise.

  21. Bob Digital Says:

The morality police would have you believe that everyone is guilty until proven innocent. That is, until they are the ones accused. Dude didn’t rape anyone, get over yourselves already. And I’d rather a guy try to steal crab legs than ramen noodles. Go big or go home. JW5 all day.

  22. lurker Says:

feed the masses touchdowns and wins.

  23. lurker Says:

    This post makes no sense.

  25. actually knows football Says:

Stop calling him a rapist. Three times he was found innocent. Also her (alleged victim) story had changed her story multiple times and there was other semen on her underwear. She was also drunk. She probably was embarrassed people found out it was her that had sex with him. But all that matters is he was found innocent THREE times!!!

  26. Couch Fan Says:

It’s not to hard to figure out Biff if you try. There will be an outcry by all the people who hate jameis. The symphony of tears is just a way of saying I will be laughing when I hear all the cries from these same people.

If you can’t figure that out. Well god help ya.

  27. ericakinsman Says:

so a girl can’t have sex with a guy during the day and then hang out with some others that night anymore?

because they had sex, i guess that makes them free to be raped since they went to the room with 3 guys. you would think at least one would do the right thing and stop it

  28. ericakinsman Says:

    you’re all going to hell

  29. Yungry Says:

    Criminal! Thief! Rapist!

  30. lurker Says:

you silly blasphemers of jameis christ, the savior of the buccaneers

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Couch

The public image of Winston is at the very least….skeptical…..the PR campaign will help Fans & the NFL public…and yes….even the haters that Winston cleared all that was necessary and was the Bucs top choice….period!!!
There is nothing demeaning about putting out positive PR on a #1 overall pick that has some questionmarks.
Err on the side of caution…..the earlier the decision the better….it will also help Winston get off to a new start….assist him with the possibility of endorsements…and above all….give him expectations to live up to.
Nothing wrong at all with any of it.
If you look at Winston as a person & a product….it is the prudent thing to do.

After all…you and many of the Winston supporters have been engaging in a PR campaign for weeks now!!!

So let me get this straight some of yuz won’t consider JW but AP is good to go? How does that even make sense? Did you not see the pics of what AP admittedly did to his own son. Now there should be an outcry over that. No way I’d take AP. Lost all respect for him.

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo has many cousins, brothes, sisters, aunts, uncles….and Pablo thinks (children)…Pablo really doesn’t know how many. But Pablo doesn’t think any of his cousins would make rape comments about Winston” Pablo doesn’t condone rape as he witnessed seveal in a Juarez prison. Pablo was not a victim and did not consent either.
Pablo would like to be a friend of 87….as soon as 87 gets some help.”

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @WS99

Everybody deserves a second chance…hopefully somewhere else. We’ve had this topic before with Hardy…..
I think it would be difficult to open up the flood gates to players with character issues.
We can certainly afford to draft Winston if he passed scrutiny…because we desperately need a francise QB. But, how badly do we need a RB…even a great one?

Winston is simply accused….Hardy was covicted by a Judge and then the case was dismissed prior to a requested Jury trial. Peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor recless assault.

  36. Buddha Says:

Jamies’ supporters are delusional. There is a reason that not a single team has shown any interest in trading up to get Winston. He will drop like a rock om draft day. Nobody wants a problem character. One man’s immaturity is another man’s poisonous troublemaker. You don’t give millions of dollars to someone who gives you no confidence you can trust him to stay clean. That’s simply stupidity, especially when you know that move would alienate female fans of the NFL a growing demographic. Draft day will be the longest day in Winston’s young life.

  37. Buczilla Says:

Did someone rape Jose’s shoes? I thought Rex Ryan went to Buffalo! #gottahaveSOLE

The only thing Peterson was trying to do was discipline his son. Yes, he was way too hard on him; but it’s a joke how much punishment and crap he’s had to endure for it. Someone being accused of rape causes a whole different level of outcry.

  39. Luther Says:

@Buddha no one is trying to trade up for him because no one thinks the Bucs are dumb enough to pass on him. Winston will be the pick so you can sulk after the pick is made.

  40. Dr Feelgood Says:

ericakinsman. If you were raped, wouldn’t you go to the police within a year!! c’mon!! Get a grip. He is no rapist. I am so disappointed in how narrow minded some of you are. if i thought he was a rapist, I would want him in jail for the rest of his life. He has been cleared, just like the Duke lacrosse team. GET THE F%CK OVER IT!!

  41. tmaxcon Says:

    ericakinsman

I’d like to buy you a lap dance sir. please stop with the moral BS and judgmental crap when you have no clue what you are talking about. Have you met Jameis? Where you in the room with Jameis. Why dont I just start calling you rapist. He was falsely accused and cleared. Look we now know barry is car thief. who would of thought that several weeks ago when he was making crap up on his throne… And yes,

Draft Winston! Kill the PC Police.

  42. BK Says:

    tmax
Until the Civil proceeding is complete…he is not “cleared”. If he settles the issue, as far as I am concerned he was guilty to some degree and felt responsible enough to financially settle the issue. This will be interesting to see how this part of his life plays out….but it is far from done.

  43. lurker Says:

you just shut your eyes and cover your ears to the truth, bk. you just said, in so many words, that he will never be innocent in your opinion. believe what you want, but i believe in the one true qb lord, jameis christ.

  44. fastclipper4444 Says:

What effect do you think this documentary will have?

  45. Sick of this $hit Says:

    ericakinsman

Great point you brought up about 2 other men being there and not one of them stopping the rape.

Probably because she wasnt being raped. Probably because they all went on record saying that she was having a good time and jokingly told them to get out and give she and Jameis privacy.

  46. BK Says:

    lurker reading comprehension is difficult.

I said “If he settles the issue” which means if he settles the civil suit against him. This was a very important part of the sentence. People that settle rape issues in Civil court are usually guilty. He has stated that he will fight it all vigorously at the combine. I followed that up with it will be interesting to see how it plays out for him.

I would never reference him as a God; he poops just like you and me. He is really an immature college kid who has repeatedly made bad choices and I am concerned about wasting the first pick on someone like that as most intelligent Bucs fans. We are not blinded by FSU loyalty like you.

  47. lurker Says:

oh, i read what you wrote and stand by what i said of you.

“People that settle rape issues in Civil court are usually guilty.”

false, and just your opinion. but based on your silly falsehoods, again, you will never see him other than with disdain and dislike.

i have no loyalty to fsu, and nothing i have stated says so. and there is no god.

  48. Mr Magoo Says:

For those of you who are calling Jameis Winston a rapist maybe you should read the actual police reports and witness statements produced by the case. Instead of listening to what other people say. The reports are available on the internet, about 87 pages in all. The reports are eye opening to anyone with a brain. You really get a good picture of what happened even though none of us can ever truly know. The reports and statements support Winston and so does common sense. What it looks like to me is that a young woman is being pushed and talked into believing she was raped by people who hope to gain financially. She put herself in an embarrasing situation and is now locked in to a lie. Go read for yourself.

  49. BK Says:

lurker I wont argue with your insane view of life and reality of what happened. BTW Did you know JW believes in GOD? He is a real preacher…oh you non believer you’re gonna love him.

  50. lurker Says:

    insane view of life? whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat.

people can believe in a god like they used to in santa claus or easter bunny or chupacabra. that is their misguided right. even for jameis christ winston.

    win, it’s in His name.
    #winninwithwinston #justwinstonbaby

  51. clafollett Says:

It could be they want to sign him to prevent him from doing workouts or his pro day. Why risk injury?

  52. White Tiger Says:

As one of the @joe’s mentioned on Duemig’s show: could just be that the Glazers could not meet with Fameis in April, because they’d already booked Marcus Mariota.

None of us will have any idea of what’s up the Buc’s sleeve – at least until free agents begin to be signed.

Just not sure where Kid Fameis Left Tackle will come from, we don’t have a high enough draft pick to bring in a guy who’s massive, yet athletically gifted enough to keep a QB who is not ever going to define the word “mobile”.

I’ve seen a lot of folks who’ve mentioned Michael Oher,as a free agent – even though he has name recognition for most fans, it’s not because of his football prowess anymore. The name recognition is due to the movie that was made about his life. He was released by the Titans last week, and as desperate as the Panthers are…they consider him a “swinging door”…one interesting side note a out signing Oher, he may actually be more agile than Kid Fameis (…and that’s not really a joke).

  53. lurker Says:

wtf, he is mobile. watch the tape. you just hatin to support mariota. lol

also, you can always get an ot next year or later in the draft. can always trade or free agency next year. tons of ways. smh

  54. Mariota Joe Says:

What’s the Glazers NUMERO UNO concern? Fannies in seats and selling stuff. Famous-for-the-wrong-reasons Jameis will have the opposite effect.
