Bucs Will Cut Goldson; “Hawk” To Fly Free

March 11th, 2015

hawk

The build-the-defense-from-the-back Greg Schiano philosophy is now ancient history.

First, the New Schiano Order spent the 2012 No. 7 overall draft pick on safety Mark Barron. Less than a year later, it was an $8 million-per-year contract for safety Dashon “Hawk” Goldson.

Neither will be 2015 Buccaneers. Joe has learned Goldson will be released after new safety Chris Conte’s contract is made official. And that means the Bucs will free up even more salary cap room.

Historically speaking, Hawk should be remembered for helping the Bucs win the Chase for Jameis last year. It was Hawk who dropped what appeared to be an easy pick-six deep in Panthers territory, late in the fourth quarter of opening day with the Bucs trailing 17-14.

Hawk made 27 starts for Tampa Bay and recorded one interception and one forced fumble, plus multiple fines, personal fouls and suspensions in 2013, when he was playing headhunter in a league that won’t tolerate that.

The legendary, candid “Hawk Radio” show on the Buccaneers Radio Network will be missed, but that’s about it when it comes to Goldson.

Bye bye chump. Performed worse than Johnson.

  2. thunderchunkyPA Says:

He was another “big name” that did not work out. This is why I like the w they are attacking UFA this year. Solid NFL starter are a MUST

  3. feelthepewterpower Says:

  4. tmaxcon Says:

had to happen. good luck hawk.

hell Lovie”s has created more dead money in 24 hours than Raheem was allowed to spend for entire roster nearly. SMH

    wake up glazers

  5. MadMax Says:

    Yup!!!!!!

  6. BucsfaninChina Says:

    Deadwood burning day…..

  8. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    So long useless flag magnet.

  9. Pelbuc Says:

No need to win the offseason Super Bowl this year. Good to see L&L correcting past mistakes. So far they’ve signed a safety and LB. Now sign a DE and Wiz and then sign Hardy. The rest is for the draft. If you’re worried about Hardy, Bucs had Sapp for numerous years so let’s not be holier than thou. I’ve got no problem with Winston and Hardy on this team. BUCS need intensity and nastiness.

  10. iamkingsu Says:

    @joe
If Bruce carter isn’t going to play MLB then why don’t you start to show Ben Heeney LB out of Kansas some love then. So the bucs fans can get behind him instead of screaming Perryman or the kid out of UCLA all the time

  11. Mariota>Winston Says:

Love this header >>>“Hawk” To Fly Free

You cant just “talk” a good game in the NFL

  12. Alstott up the gut Says:

Koenen needs to be next! He was awful to watch last year!

  13. brandonbucfan Says:

Hawk is another of many who made his reputation
and then money because of the players around him. When he was signed their was speculation that may be the case and it turned out to be true.

  14. Skyline Crew Says:

Yay. So that’s 3 of L&L FAs from last year, right? Keep cutting.

  15. ElioT Says:

God what a freaking waste of time the Crawk was.

    Go Sucs!!!

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“The Squawk” all talk….is gone……freeing up another $4mil……, big hits after allowing defenders to make the catch…..you won’t be missed….would rather have a $1mil player trying hard than fat-cats sitting on easy money.

Say what you will about Lovie & Licht….but they are flat-a$$ cutting their losses….especially with Johnson….that had to be a tough pill to swallow….

  17. finishers Says:

    We need Hardy bad!

  18. deminion Says:

The Squawk good riddance he was a blown assignment and missed tackle waiting to happen

  19. mikeh Says:

how the glazer boys must be sitting there thinking wow! the wasted money.

  20. iamkingsu Says:

Been Heeney LB Kansas Jayhawks! 3rd 4th round STEAL!

  21. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“how the glazer boys must be sitting there thinking wow! the wasted money.”

They could be forgiven for thinking that. I hope thought that they realize it’s the cost of doing business. Football would be tough to manage for the owners if they weren’t hauling in billions to make up for the millions they lose every year on injuries and players that do not pan out.

I’ve seen the stat on NFLdraft choices. 46% of first rounders are busts. 50% of second rounders. Lots of money wasted in the NFL.

  22. Arealbucsfan Says:

    Stephone Anthony ILB Clemson

  23. MadMax Says:

Draft Senquez Golson…..perfect nickel CB….he’s short but led the SEC in interceptions….could get him in the 4th.

  24. Mariota>Winston Says:

Derrick Morgan LB is coming to 1 Buc Palace …sign him!

  25. Sethb22 Says:

    @JOE,

Can we get an update on salary cap est. after Goldson release… Looks to me were in prime position to go after Hardy…

  26. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

My confidence in is @ an all time low…

  27. Not "The Kevin" Says:

Remember when him and Mark Barron were trying to call themselves the “NO FLY ZONE”??!!!!! He was right that lazy sh!T don’t fly round here BRUH……bubye…bubye….bubye….your very heavy….bubye!!!

  28. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

    Cut em all.

    Burn down the mission.

  29. Not "The Kevin" Says:

surprised not one team has picked up Steven Ridley. Dude can run…

  30. Mariota>Winston Says:

    Goldson move saves 4 million.

  31. kaput Says:

How much under the cap is Tampa after these cuts and signings?

  32. Skyline Crew Says:

    Seth

Don’t need a lot of money for Hardy. Low salary and then resign after a year or so.

  33. Jonny 2.3 Says:

He was supposedly a good leader, but his play was always sub par and I for one am glad that we are moving away from him. Being a heavy hitter should always be a bonus to a good tackler. Goldson was never a good tackler though. In pass coverage he was invisible for a free safety.

  34. bucgatr 71 Says:

Am I allowed to post here?

  35. Rich Says:

    Greg Hardy please please please

  36. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

He was a hawk but he wasn’t a BALLHAWK!! 🙂

  37. bucrightoff Says:

Hardy hasn’t had a single visit yet. Until his situation with the league clears up nobody is gonna look at him.

  38. bucgatr 71 Says:

@bucritghtoff. He may incur a 6 game penalty regardless of the overturn. That is why I think. I think we should Jump and offer him two diff deals.

  39. Buccfan37 Says:

The Hawk’s feathers just got plucked. Good luck trying to match those Bucs paydays.

  40. Babaloo Says:

Skyline crew, hawk was not a lovey smith free agent. He was a schiano man.

  41. passthebuc Says:

Wiz said he made a mistake coming to Tampa for an interview. He was under the impression it was a professional football team.

  42. bucgatr 71 Says:

I say we have the Tailgate Party up here in Montana and then Jet to the game in our G6s. Yeah, that would be like L&L putting together a Playoff team this yr.
Hope to see you all up here next yr.
I can show you stuff you can’t find with the trail guides

  43. TheOriginalGreg Says:

Sorry Joe, but I won’t be missing the Thursday night “Jeff Spicolli” radio show, the dude was brutal to listen too!

  44. ddneast Says:

LOL. Do you think for one minute the Glazers haven’t turned a profit every year they have owned this team. You guys really are stupid.
Skyline Crew you should just stop posting because you show how stupid and misinformed you L n L haters are.
First off, the Hawk was a FA pickup of Dummynick and Schiano.
Second of all, to think Greg Hardy isn’t going to demand a big payday is just stupid.
He slapped a ‘Ho around and is probably going to get a six game suspension but he is still going to want top dollar in this market.
    Get some sence will you.

  45. blackmagic00 Says:

So the rest of the 15 yard fly zone is gone? Koo!

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

No maybe the refs will stop targeting us.

  47. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Now maybe the refs will stop targeting us. As far as clearing cap space, wouldn’t that depend on what Chris Conte’s being paid?

Spotrac already removed Goldson from the roster.

  48. SOEbuc Says:

@bonzai they do right? I thought that was just me

  49. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @ddneast

    You tell them.

Though, I differ on one of your points. Greg Hardy.

I think he’s going to want to demand big money, but most teams won’t pay it. His best bet is a one year deal to prove himself, then get a big contract.

What the Bucs could do is offer him a low, but reasonable amount for the first year, and increase it in year two (like three days after the league year starts) with a guarantee. This would allow them to cut him if he doesn’t work out after a year, but also gives him a larger contract if he proves himself.

I think something like that is the best way to go.

Remember, he’s going to be suspended at least six games. So he’ll only have 10 games in which to prove himself.

AND, he’s been out of football for a year, so he has to get in football shape too.

  50. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @SOEbuc

Yes, they do. Goldson said, his last year with the 49ers, that he wasn’t going to change his style of play. From that moment on, he was in the refs scopes.

Would have been worse if we’d gotten Suh.
