Smartest Ever?

February 21st, 2015

Updated: 6:39 p.m. Is Jameis Winston a football super genius?

During this afternoon’s NFL Network coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine, hosts Rich Eisen and draft guru Mike Mayock shared the words of their colleague, former head coach Steve Mariucci.

They said Mariucci is claiming he ran Winston through Xs and Os on the infamous whiteboard, as Mariucci does with QB prospects annually, and Winston is the sharpest Xs and Os guy he’s experienced. (Video here.)

Mayock went on to say the scuttlebutt around the combine is that Winston has been wowing teams during the 15-minute team interviews allowed.

Also, Kurt Warner and Michael Irvin have been flapping on camera about how they like all the leadership intangibles they’re seeing from Winston on the Lucas Oil Stadium field, the way he mingles and talks to his peers.

Ah, the Bucs’ QB drama is heating up.

    Its Winston, or its Winston.

There is no drama when there is no doubt. As I said weeks ago this sould not even be a debate.

Not picking Winston isn’t even an option.

    Mariota = Tebow

  5. The Real Malloy Says:

fools…he’ll set this organization back another 10 years…

  6. carlstoe Says:

Everyone gets an MRI. This explains why he dressed for a game he was suspended!

  7. knuckledragger Says:

I must say that they both threw really well. I only saw one Sure bad throw by both of them. Im moving closer to the Draft a QB crowd now. I would lean towards Mariota because of character concerns but if Winston clears the teams investigation process and we draft him Im ok it.
These kids were CLEARLY the top two QBs. They really impressed me today

  8. Couch Fan Says:

All I ask is that the haters dont cry just yet. Wait for draft day when its official and Jameis holds up that #1 Bucs Jersey. Then let the Symphony of Tears flow.

  9. Fishfries Says:

I’ve been saying this is these are the reasons we should draft him. Doesn’t hurt that he has a great skill set too. The doubters seem to overlook these attributes. It’s something that you can’t teach.

  10. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Winston Hater: I know more than Mariucci and Winston is dumb. Dur dur dur.

  11. BFFL Says:

In one of the drills I heard Winston say “you save the best for last” when referring to himself. I’m sure his peers just loved that cocky attitude.

  12. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

Couch…let them babble for the next 2 months. No one answer them, but amongst themselves.

    No sense arguing anymore.

  13. knuckledragger Says:

So Mooch says Winston is the smartest on the whiteboard hes ever seen.
Chip Kelly says Mariota processes things as fast as as Petyon Manning and is also usually the fastest guy on the field.
    I like both comparisons.

  14. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

He was also seen on the sidelines firing up his fellow QB’s.

  15. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I also remember hearing that he would be terrible in the interviews because of his intelligence and dialect.

I sense hater panic and it’s not even March.

  16. Luther Says:

I would trust Mooch over Kelly any day.

  17. Solinor Says:

Thanks but I’ll take the faster quarterback, Glennon.

  18. ddneast Says:

Small hands, slow speed, bad shoulder. Yup, this sounds like Peyton Manning…now that he’s 40.

  19. Dewey Selmon Says:

How can he set the franchise back 10 years when he will sign a 4 year deal with an option for year 5? C’mon man!

  20. Lovethepewter Says:

God, look at what a fat ass he is

    https://twitter.com/FlaStateGameday/status/569198905835057154/video/1

I mean he’s just so fat I can’t even take it anymore. I’m surprised they didn’t need to remove a wall from Lucas Oil just to bring him in on a forklift

  23. knuckledragger Says:

” I would trust Mooch over Kelly any day”
    Typical Lurker response.
I am complimenting both QBs. Of which I hope we draft Neither, and you chime in with your overbearing man crush hero worship answer. You are so defensive over Winston I would think you two were dating.

  24. LargoBuc Says:

Winston and Mariota are both quarterbacks. Winston, however, is also a leader.

  25. PTWalk Says:

These poeple crack me up with that “set the franchise back ten years line”.Did Freeman set us back ten yrs? Lmao

  26. Posey99 Says:

    “He’s a baller and your a hater” x 5,000

I bet the ‘H’ key on your keyboard is about worn out.

  27. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ve heard the comliments Joe’s just mentioned for Winston…..I’ve also heard many compliments for Mariota……It’s a good thing I watched the combine…. from JBF, I’d have to conclude their is no choice….the decision has already been made….drama over….fait accompli…

I’m reminded of Tokyo Rose……we could call it “Tokyo Joes”

  28. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    there is no choice

  29. Luther Says:

@knuckledragger I should point out that Kelly has a dog in the fight so no I don’t trust his opinion over Mooch. Nothing personal just facts.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

You have never heard the Tampabaybuc fan make any accusations…..question ability….guestion the readiness of Winston….only questionmarks about his maturity/character going forward. I don’t have a problem with other’s questioning Mariota’s readiness…as I do also.
What I have always had a problem with is the unwillingness of the Winston supporters to value the positive characteristics of Mariota….making fun of good character….and today dismissing his athleticism.
Winston supporters appear to be so busy defending their choice that they have no way to objectively view Mariota.
There are a few that concede the Mariota positives….but very few.

  31. bucs4lyfe Says:

Atleast people are finally breaking down things that have to do with quarterbacking and not his speech or off field issues. Both these kids are top of the draft for a reason and send both will have a big impact on whoever they are drafted by….. They have more hype than Ryan tannehill drafted 8 overall and doesn’t seem to be doing all that bad in Miami even though he’s Freeman reincarnated lol

  32. Jack Says:

Nice. Glad to hear this news.

  33. Josh P Says:

Anyone seen Patrick, he’s kind of quiet today….

  34. Meat Says:

make your font bigger or slow down to read. you are responding to Luther, not lurker.

although, i agree with luther. mooch has no dog in the fight. kelly was the ex-couch of mariota. lmao also, kelly said that on espn before the national championship game, even though, i am sure, he has not had any interactions with peyton manning.

    LargoBuc Says:

Winston and Mariota are both quarterbacks. Winston, however, is also a leader.

This is exactly what I am talkng about….a completely dismissive, lame and ignorant statement…..Mariota has been described as a leader in evey way shape and form by many experts….along with his coaches, teamates & competitors.

  37. knuckledragger Says:

Watching this QB debate for the last couple months I have come to the conclusion that the Bucs fanbase as a whole is too close to Tallahassee to be completely objective in their QB evaluation. There are far too many ‘Haters’ and even more ‘Winstonites” than there would be if Winston didnt go to school in the State of Florida.
Luckily for us nobody that makes the ultimate decisions have emotional ties to the situation the way most of the fanbase does

  38. Josh P Says:

@Meat Guarentee???? You do know Winston was accepted to Stanford right??

  39. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

“They said Mariucci is claiming he ran Winston through Xs and Os on the infamous whiteboard, as Mariucci does with QB prospects annually, and Winston is the sharpest Xs and Os guy he’s experienced.”

THIS IS NOT A SHOCKER TO ME!

    AND THIS IS WHY…..

  40. The Real Malloy Says:

Dewey, you set the team back 10 years when you ruin the opportunity we have, which is the #1 overall pick. You CANNOT pick a bust…and Im sorry, but he’s got alot of red flags…

  41. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ knuckledragger

Great point…..Winston is a polarizing figure….in part because of the in-state rivalry.

I now live in NC & I can tell you there would be the same with a QB from NC State…vs NC…..with the Panthers.

That doesn’t mean we should pass on Winston…but it, along with the character question creates great polarization…

    Wouldn’t happen with a 4th round pick of a CB….for example.

  42. Josh P Says:

@knuckledragger agree to a point… But we’re even closer to UF who will bash JW just becuase he was a Seminole….the bias goes both ways….

  43. lurker Says:

wow tbbf, where is all your condemnation of the defamation and implied racist comments of winston? smh

you could see the leadership quality differences watching the combine.

  44. knuckledragger Says:

    Sorry Lurker……………..
Im just so tired of being attacked by the Winston bias community that Im a little edgy.

  45. 87ForWinstonNOMariota Says:

    TBBF says :

“Mariota has been described as a leader in evey way shape and form by many experts….along with his coaches, teamates & competitors.”

I’m not arguing with you buddy, but I’ve heard it more than a few times that Mariota was a quiet type of guy. In fact that he had to work on that in college, trying to BE a leader. People have said this about him.

  46. Ian_620WDAE Says:

the pure anger and hatred towards Winston is baffling to me, he has dispelled every supposed knock against him at the combine this week. Has shown leadership and was wow’ed everyone during the throwing drills.

I like Mariota too but how can you not be impressed Jameis

  47. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Will be interesting to see how all of this–media drama plays out over the next two months.

  48. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    Post of the day TBBF!!

    “Tokyo Joes”

    Love it!

  49. nate Says:

    Winston all the way!

  50. knuckledragger Says:

    @TBBF
And I agree with your theory of JW supporters being so defensive that they never get a chance to properly evaluate Mariota because he is the competition. Much the way Tebow Supporters were a few yrs ago.
    @JoshP
Yes I guess I should have mentioned silly UFers that would not want a QB for their Pro team just because they were your rival in College. LOL. I went to UF and my wife went to FSU. I am completely non biased to JW because of his school. Im just a doubter in ones ability to change character and thought processes immediately. One of the reasons Im in the trade down crowd.
I must say they both woooed me today though.

  51. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I would pay money to see Mariucci vs Mariota on the white board– “the uncut version”

  52. SuperSam Says:

Winston’s shoulder is “bad,” according to a scout who is not authorized to speak on the record. The Florida State product’s shoulder won’t be an issue in the short term, but it’s viewed as a long-term problem by this team. The injury was categorized as a “real issue.”

  53. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

“Did Freeman set us back ten years?”

Well, it’s been 6 years since the Bucs drafted him, and here they are with the 1st pick in the draft, awarded to the worst team in football. 4 more years and we’ll see.

  54. knuckledragger Says:

    @Ian
There are only a few posters here that display genuine “anger” and “hate” of JW.
There are Many though who doubt him and get thrown into the same category as the “Haters”

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @lurker

I have constantly called out posters by name with their racial comments…and in particular for calling Winston a rapist.

I hesitate to call someone a racist because….a person can make a racial comment without being a racist….and I don’t know anyone personally on the site so I do call people names when I don’t know them…..instead, I will characterize their remarks.

Such as Largobuc…….the comment was ignorant etc….I don’t say that he is ignorant…..when you start naming people….you lose the argument right then.

  56. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I don’t call people names….

  57. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

No reason to brotha, leave that up to the keystroke warriors.

  58. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This debate has degenerated and polarized JBF readers more than any other issue. It’s driven in part by the bias of the website toward one candidate…..it forces the other side to be far more on the attack than they would if they were getting some support for their position.
A few of us could go either way with the pick(very few)….my main concern is that we pick one of them.
I hope fans will come together after the pick.

I will say this….at the beginning I was about 70-30….Mariota/Winston….now I am about 55-45…..that is only due to my own evaluation of all of the facts….not JBF.

  59. lurker Says:

    tbbf

good for you, i misspoke then (or mistyped as the case may be). there has always been ad hominem attacks here of which i have participated, too. and yes, this site devolves into a neanderthal/knuckledragger (pun intended, knuck) free-for-all at times. more so now. trolls are a fact of life on the internet, as well as racism and misogyny, especially with anonymity.

  60. Beeric Says:

They said the same kinds of things about Trent Richardson…just saying. Either QB is welcome.

  61. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If anyone can apply just a minimum amount of empathy…

Imagine what it would be like for a Winston supporter….if a multiple daily articles came out pounding him….promoting Mariota with almost every keystroke….raising daily questions……accentuating negatives….eliminating positives….

That’s somewhat how Mariota supporters feel…..and some of them have become more Winston haters than Mariota supporters….that’s a lot of what’s happening here.

  62. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ lurker

They display an equal amount…..ignorance, cowardice, stupidity.

Joe should step in on some of the slander….it is objectionable even in anonymity…

  63. knuckledragger Says:

I agree with both Lurker and TBBF on the unnecessary fighting and name calling. Hell I changed my screen name a month ago because it shows that I went to UF and I was constantly being attacked. One day Joe wrote an article about us Trade down crowd being knuckledraggers and I was tired of always having to defend my views .

  64. Luther Says:

Great interview with Marcus and Jameis just now on NFL Network. Headed to play some chess now. Taping Total Access for later.

  65. Lion Says:

Winston is light years ahead of Mariota when it comes to reading defenses, commanding a huddle, being a leader, and has all the traits you look for in a franchise QB. Plus his anticipation throws and throwing receivers open are off the charts. This is a no brainer pick.

The fact that Mariota has never even so much as called a play or commanded a huddle on top of him being a quiet guy scares me. Sure he can make all the “throws”,but so can every other quarterback in the NFL. It’s the intangibles that separates the great ones from the rest of the pack.

Hell Mike Glennon can make all the NFL throws and is actually a good quarterback, but where he comes up short is in ability to lead along with some other intangibles.

  66. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @knuckledragger

Everything has a price….there would be a point (depending on the offer) that I could be for a trade down…..but absent that offer….I want one of the QBs.

I am praying that Winston passes the psychological tests, background & interview process….for three reasons.
!. I want the QBs to be compared on an equal basis for their on-field skills
    2. If Winston is the pick….I don’t want to be constantly worried about him
    3. I wouldn’t wish a bad character on anybody

  67. lurker Says:

i have been lucky. i have wanted qb’s this year and last. however, the joes have always pimped for their choice, right or wrong. i have questioned their motives and implied it was for clicks, but it has been denied forever. they always stated that they write what they want, and that they are more op-ed than non-biased journalism. however, there is minimal non-biased journalism anymore, anyways e.g. nytimes winston article.

  68. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Did you not watch the games?? Mariota can read defenses far better than Winston. Winston is a better leader, but it’s not like Mariota isn’t a leader either, gaining praise from just about everybody. As for calling plays, neither QB will be doing any of that their rookie years so what does it matter? I’m sure Mariota knows what the hell an audible is.

    Some people…

  69. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Joe has stated many times that his site is extremely biased.

  70. knuckledragger Says:

I sometimes wish the Bucs fanbase largely lived in the Oregon area so I could watch the battle go the other way for a bit. Lol Im a tad bit sadistic.

  71. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ lurker

I’m OK with Joe having a bias…..or choosing a side (his perrogative)…..it’s just that there are benefits & costs to doing that aswriter/commentator/”journalist”….

The benefits are (clicks)….and if you are right….some credibilty cuudos….if you are wrong…you lose some credibility….

There is temporary polarization caused….and it’s mitigated because of the anonomys posts….sure eveyone can kiss and make up when this is over and winning solves everything….but it’s still somewhat unsettling.

  72. ddneast Says:

No PTWalk, picking Freeman has set us back 6, so far.

  73. lurker Says:

and we are all prone to hyperbole and a need to be right as well as influenced by many, different factors. 2 people can watch the same thing and see different things.

” Mariota can read defenses far better than Winston.”

i would disagree with this statement. 🙂

  74. Babaloo Says:

So if his football smarts are that high then what do all those interceptions actually mean?

  75. knuckledragger Says:

The fact that Mariota has never even so much as called a play or commanded a huddle on top of him being a quiet guy scares me. Sure he can make all the “throws”,but so can every other quarterback in the NFL. It’s the intangibles that separates the great ones from the rest of the pack.

    ……………………………..
This is exactly the one sided view you were talking about TBBF. LMAO
Rich Eisen said that the one thing that Blew Him away today was that Winston had not called a play since High School yet that gets left out the comment.
    SMDH

  76. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Examples:

Picture of golfer Phil Mickelson could indicate a snap count of going on two, because Mickelson “always finishes second.”

Mickelson on two. Funny. Make sense, even. But what about the Burger King mascot?

Indicated a “have it your way” option play?

A “whopper” of a deep pass?

Lol–when the Ducks called an audible, every offensive player looks to the sideline at the same time, as if someone had yelled “Fire!”

  77. lurker Says:

interview on nflnow of jameis winston.

  78. lurker Says:

i am glad and impressed that both qb’s threw. refreshing.

  79. lurker Says:

winston is very affable and jovial.
    confident.

  80. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

@lurker, from what I have seen from Mariota, he is not a run first guy, he is always looking to pass. He doesn’t turn the ball over and I have seen lots of times where he looked like he was about to take off on a run, but kept his eyes downfield and found his man with a pass. One such example us the game against FSU.

    @LUVMYBUCS

Don’t know if you watch college ball, but a LOT of college teams do that when an audible is called, it is part of the offense.

  81. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Since when did being quiet disqualify you as being a leader?

There are as many leadership styles as there are leaders…..each has his or her own….

  82. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There are good people who do bad things…..bad people who do good things….

The battery of psychological tests….interviews, background checks will ferret out enough information to make the choice far less of a questionmark.

The fans will have to trust the process….either way…..and that is where the problem lies….2-14 hasn’t exactly set the stage for trust….

  83. LUVMYBUCS Says:

The key to Chip’s scheme is rapid execution.

When Chip’s offense goes no-huddle. They’ll spend as little as 13 seconds between plays. They don’t give defenses time to make substitutions or adjustments; they don’t give defenders time to think or breathe.

  84. Lion Says:

I’ll take the vocal leader that is oozing with self confidence over the introvert. I never said Mariota isn’t a leader, but Jameis is far ahead in that category.

  85. Eric Says:

    Smartest EVER.

Man it just keeps getting worse for the haters.

    And that trend will continue.

    Go Jaboo! Great job.

Tip of the hat to Marcus He looked great too.

  86. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ lurker

Winston has a very disarming personality…….likeable, fun…..light hearted and easy to watch. Many find it hard to overcome his obvious difficulty with public speaking….he’s not the first with this…..but he does a good job.
It will be interesting to see what happens when he is challenged one-on-one in private interviews.
No one at the combine will raise any negatives on any player openly.

  87. Aceofaerospace Says:

I’m a Mariota fan, but if we draft Winston, I’ll be his biggest fan. Just draft a qb.

  88. iamkingsu Says:

Why was this ‘ever’ a debate. I said this months ago whoever doesn’t like Winston must not like winning and it rattled a lot of you’ll feathers. I know I’m sick of my favorite team being a joke. You’ll might can accept losing I cant and neither will Jameis

  89. Uranus Johnson Says:

They are REALLY laying it on thick now. The Winston flacks should go get jobs in government.

  90. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Okie St. ran sum of that-but not 130 of 160 plays, w/ whistles and hand signals making up the rest. Not with every adjustment coming from the sideline

  92. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Let me ask this question again do you’ll still want to trade your pick and get multiple picks and become the St. Louis Rams (mediocre)?? Or take the qb and take the Colts path?? In the Rams defense they already took a chance on Sam Bradford.

I’ll still hold ground until after the media storm..lol

  110. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @iamkingsu

Here’s my stab at it…..It’s hindsight to look at the Colts….although Luck was a predictable success.

The answer is….”it depends”……what is the trade offer….3 first round and 3 second round picks?

And…..”it depends” on what you do with the picks….this year, next year and the next…..so….the real answer is that you can make a mistake either way….or make a winning decision depending on what you do.
There absolutely is no guarantee…anyone who says differently is delusional.

    ……………………………………
The rams already had Sam Bradford that they paid 50 mil guaranteed to when they made that move so your argument not that strong. However I am one that you are directing your question to so I will say that watching them throw today they have jerked me closer to the Draft a QB crowd. I was concerned with Jameis’ interviews and Mariotas throwing. Both of em were great today in both aspects. Im warming up to us taking a QB.

  115. ndog Says:

Slyline, SuperSam and Patrick those are the 3 ringleaders and I can’t wait to see their reaction on April 30th. Oh and if we do screw up and draft Mr. Average I will be very disappointed and not at all hopefully for the future. BUT I will support him even if I pretty much know he is going to lead us know where.

  116. iamkingsu Says:

    @knuckledragger
He difinitely said Mariota. He was piggybacking off the point the coach of the year Bruce Arians. Where the spread qbs whole offense looks to the sideline after each play and the coaches hold up poster signs of the next play. He also said that’s not real quarterbacking! But I won’t go any further lol

Are you kicked back w a piña colada n a smile? You should be. St. Jameis had fun today. Apparently he’s about that action Boss! Between yesterday and today the kid earned himself some much needed points. Glennon should be excited, no doubt St. Jameis will make him better and vice versa. #TAMPAAAA

  118. iamkingsu Says:

    @Knuckledragger
Sam Bradford was also coming off of injury that year. And been injured ever since! Don’t talk to me about Sam Bradford

I guess NFL execs are comparing Winstons football IQ to Peyton Manning. Something else the haters will ignore.

  120. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Erik was reportedly spotted out shopping for 87’s Winston jersey.

  121. iamkingsu Says:

Jameis is the best ‘on field’ prospect college since I don’t know who. The reason I don’t know is because he’s better than Luck while he was at Stanford and I’m not old enough to give accurate breakdowns of the Manning’s and players before that

  122. Lion Says:

Ummm. Nope sorry knuckledragger it was definitely Mariota he was talking about, where exactly are you getting this misinformation from anyway?

  123. John Says:

This god-complex that so many of yall have about judging JW’S character is obviously based on deeper issues and biases that yall have. How self-righteous to judge his character based on allegations and stupid college mistakes. By the way the allegations didn’t make it to trial and didn’t even stand the beyond preponderance of the evidence criteria in the title 9 investigation. There for he is innocent, stop bringing it up!
But, golden boy Peyton Manning had to pay a girl off for a sexual assault incident that happened while he was at Tennessee. Nobody ever talks about that or accuses him of lacking in character.

The crab leg situation was stupid but it looked like a hook up gone wrong. None of yall ever had a friend that worked at a restaurant or grocery store give u some stuff free right!? If not then that tells me you lack the character to make friends.

The obscenities yelling was stupid and childish as well! But to try to make him out to be a monster who is going to destroy the entire city of Tampa if he becomes the QB is just ridiculous and makes evident the depth of your prejudices.

If you like Mariota bc he runs faster, jumps higher, was darn accurate and you believe he will be a better nfl qb, that’s a respectable argument that can be debated. In my opinion how you lead your team, accuracy, and understanding of coverages matters more than the characteristics of speed and athleticism. But, let’s debate these points bc these characteristics are what’s going to win the bucs games. Not hating someone for past mistakes.
    Go Bucs 2015!!!

  124. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    @Fisfries

People aren’t questioning his on-field ability.

If Winston hadn’t gotten into so much trouble during his short time at FSU he’d practically be a lock to go No.1.

    Greg Mancz, C, Toledo (EW)
    Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon (COM)
Denzel Perryman, OLB/ILB, Miami (Fla.) (SR)
    Danny Shelton, DT/NT, Washington (SR)
    Blake Sims, QB, Alabama (COM)
    Tony Washington, OLB, Oregon (EW)
Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State (COM)

  127. Skyline Crew Says:

    @ndog

I feel sorry for you. Your hate and anger for Mariota and anybody that has a different opinion than you shows the type of person you are. If we draft Mariota I suspect you’ll have a meltdown.

  128. P'cola Buc Says:

Nice interview on NFL network with Mariota and Winston sitting side by side. Winston was really in his element talking and joking with the commentators. The contrast between the 2 again was amazing. Mariota, the introvert vs Winston the extrovert. Which did you all prefer?

  129. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

One thing that is not up for debate is that Mariota’s 4.52 will help him behind the Bucs horrid offensive line while Winston’s 4.97 will bring him trouble. L&L will be looking at that.

Whoever is quarterbacking the Bucs next year, whether it be Mariota, Winston, or Glennon, they have to do something about that train wreck of an offensive line.

  130. Yungry Says:

    Rapist!(allege)Thief!(on tape), Crimial!~Yup he is a thief…Profanity-check, Handsy=yes,

  131. P'cola Buc Says:

Also how does the introvert/extrovert factor effect leadership or is this a non-factor?

  132. Lion Says:

Thanks for the insight P’cola, that reassures what I’ve been trying to tell these Mariota guys all afternoon.

  133. Lion Says:

I think it’s a huge factor, the NFL is a league full of egos and manly men, being an outspoken leader is a huge plus in the NFL and players respect it far more.

  134. WS99 Says:

Did Marriota really say that he needs to work on huddling and calling a play? Rich Eisen said that on nfln.

  135. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ armchair

It is possible, but not likely that the interviewing of other QBs is either one of the three:
    Smokescreen
Potential QB if draft down (Glennon would be starter)
2 QBs drafted 1 in late rounds (Glennon Traded)

Notice that they aren’t looking at Hundley or Petty…..

  136. Lion Says:

Proof that you are wrong knuckledragger.

“The biggest concerns with Oregon QB Marcus Mariota as he prepares for the NFL is his transition on the field to a pro-style offense. Mariota rarely took snaps under center, went through NFL progressions, nor was he asked to even call plays on the field.
“Marcus Mariota has said he needs to relearn calling plays because the last play call he had was in high school,” Rich Eisen said during coverage of the combine on the NFL Network.”

  137. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

For the record, Mariota looked good too. I just personally think Winston will be the better pro. I am excited to hear the front offices are impressed by his football IQ. Despite what some say here, he puts a lot of time into film and has been studying coverages for most of his life.

    It’s paying off.

The people talking about criminals are showing their desperation.

  138. iamkingsu Says:

For all this about Mariotas ability to run fast he sure was sacked a lot at Oregon. Winston’s ability to read coverages and diagnose the blitz will help him get rid of the football faster than mariotas legs. NFL football is played from the neck up ask Tom Brady they always show his combine tape

  139. knuckledragger Says:

    @Knuckledragger
Sam Bradford was also coming off of injury that year. And been injured ever since! Don’t talk to me about Sam Bradford.
    ……………………………………………………………
That doesnt negate the fact that when the Rams made the deal THEY thought they had their QB. Im sorry they didnt consult you first so that you could tell them that he was gonna be a bust.

  140. Skyline Crew Says:

I’m surprised they looked at Sims or the other QB. Hopefully, they don’t go with one of them. It is between Mariota and Winston. Take Mariota though IMO.

  141. rayjay1122 Says:

I think both of them are as close to can’t miss as it gets. One just has more baggage and does not run as fast. I am excited that we get our choice between the two. No hate from me towards either of these ultra talented prospects. Go Bucs!!!

  142. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ John

I agree with most of your post and have proven that with mine regarding the issue.

I don’t accuse Winston of anything that isn’t pretty much been admitted to by him….but I don’t believe he should automatically be given a pass on potential character issues….the process will determine that and I’ll trust the process.

I am disturbed by some of the posts from the Mariota side and think they are far more anti-Winston than pro Mariota.

If the process is done right by the Bucs…..we can all be happy with either pick in the end…

  144. Skyline Crew Says:

It really comes down to what kind of offense Koetter wants to run. Knowing old Lovie though, unfortunately it will probably be old school thought of football and we will continue to put minimal points on the board.

  145. Skyline Crew Says:

I think the ones that attack Winston the most are the trade down crowd.

  146. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @rayjay1122

I’m not quite to the 50-50 point but I’m closer…..at least you and I will be guaranteed happiness if the Bucs draft one of them.

As we get closer….I’d like to see more Mariota articles from Joe instead of having to hunt for them elsewhere.

As long as Mariota is a strong candidate…..he deserves the attention of all Buc media outlets.

  147. Saskbuco Says:

I haven’t posted in a long time, but feel compelled to do so now. This whole 1st overall pick that so many are back and forth on its sure a hot topic to post on. I will make this post as short as possible. Jameis Winston is clearly the better pro prospect at this point so let’s look at him (based on game film and scouting reports), not commenting on off the field things in this post. So let’s take a look at him vs previous drafts. 2014 ( Bortles, Manziel, Bridgewater, Carr), 2013 (Manuel, Smith, Bucs own Glennon), 2012 ( Luck, Griffin, Tannehill, Weeden), 2011 ( Newton, Locker, Gabbert, Ponder, Dalton, Kapernick), 2010 ( Bradford, Tebow) and 2009 ( Stafford, Sanchez, Freeman). Now I put only one, Luck ahead of Winston over all these QBs since 2009, and one could argue Bradford and maybe RG3 ahead of him, so 4 at the lowest. This is just my opinion, thoughts bucs fans????

  148. iamkingsu Says:

We should think about trading V jax. It’s better to get rid of a player a year earlier than a year late. We can pick up stefon diggs, nelson agholar, rashad Greene etc. It’s a lot of value in the mid rounds for a wide receiver

  149. knuckledragger Says:

    @lion
If I am wrong then Im wrong. I thought he was talking about Jameis. I am man enough to admit it. I am not a Winston hater nor a Mariota lover. I am in the middle which is a hard place to be because every misquote you make or doubt you raise about Winston brings you a slew of hatred

  150. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Saskbuco

Welcom back…..you might be right about Winston….but it’s hindsight to make comparisons with all of the other QBs that have come out….and it’s projecting Winston into the NFL when he hasn’t thrown the first pass.
Evidence of this is Manziel……many thought he was the second coming….hasn’t happened yet. Some of these others….too soon to tell.

  151. Lion Says:

I respect you admitting it knuckledragger for sure. However, when I first brought it up to you, you were adamant in saying I was the wrong one instead of even giving me any sort of credit what so ever.

  152. rayjay1122 Says:

    @TBBF
That is pretty much exactly my feelings as well. I will be happy either way. The Bucs are doing their homework and will take who they feel is the best fit. Now if they go and pass on one of these guys…… Well I will just give up. I will always be a Bucs fan but if they pass on either of them then I may have to check out until the current decision makers are gone.

  153. JW5alltheway Says:

Here is a fact for everyone – EK speaks with friend and says she was at a house party drinking and got hit in the head. next thing she knew she was woken up to being violently raped. Cop shows up and her story is that she was at potbellys and left in a cab with ppl she didnt know and by now you know the rest of the story. Point is she lied to her friend in the first five minutes of her allegation. Why do ppl just want to dismiss this like she didnt tell different versions to different ppl. You can read all about if the FACTUAL police report. TO me thats the most glaring issue with EK and the allegation

  154. Lion Says:

TBBF if Johnny Manziel was coming out this year there would be no one talking him up as much as they were last year. On this flip side, hypothetically let’s say Mariota and Winston were in last year’s draft class they would have been the first two QBS taken as well, before Bortles and Manziel. Winston would be playing for Texans if that were the case.

Depends on what you got in that trade. There’s plenty of good draft prospects in this years draft to stock the cupboard for awhile. Next years draft is deep as well.

This is not like the 80’s, 90’s or mid 2000’s. With all of these quarterback academies, camps & training facilities things have changed big time. Your gonna see more and more pro ready prospects. Don’t get bent all out of shape over one–there’s plenty coming down the pipeline.

I just don’t get people over the internet trying to give someone “life lessons” over the internet. I can tell you the truth which is that my “decisions” have made me quite successful in life. When I was in the trenches I am glad that I had guys beside me that used good reasoning to make decisions Im still alive

    Basically, you agree with me?

I do not blame you; however, it is apparent that you do not understand what you are saying.

  190. Posey99 Says:

I’m sold on 1 guy in this draft and its Leonard Williams. Anybody who thinks its a lock for us to take either quarterback is delirious. Both are good. pass Rush is also needed on this team. Mike glennon does not suck if he did we wouldn’t have mutliple teams trying to trade for him. His (thrown into the fire ) rookie season was better than most of the elites guys out there now. Even if we did take a quarterback glennon will be starting this year. Jameis isn’t starting from day 1 and neither is Mariota. Leonard Williams is incredibly dominate and would be on the field day 1

  191. Web_Bucs Says:

The INT #’s worry me about Winston. To many poor decisions and some awful throws. Decision making takes part in every offense no matter the scheme

  192. Skyline Crew Says:

    @Posey

I’ve always said be prepared for 4 situations: Mariota, Williams, Winston, or trade back. It’ll be easier come draft day when they do make a decision.

  193. Eric Says:

If the Bucs pass on both of those guys, as well as both looked at the combine, and pick a DL instead there is gonna be an epic mutiny.

There are good DL’s in free agency.

Trot Glennon back out as the answer?

That can’t be sold. Not at all.

  194. Capt.Tim Says:

The choice is obvious, after all of the reveals at the combine.
    Mariota has
    1) no experience reading defenses
    2) no experience calling plays
    3) no experience calling protections
    4) virtually no experience lining up under center-5 times this season
As Kurt Warner stated- these are among the most basic common skills of a Quarterback. For a QB to have to learn these( if he can) at the pro level is unimaginable- like going to grad school, without knowing the Alphabet or how to multiple. He said the spred offense leaves QBs totally unprepared for the NFL. All Mariotaever learned, was to get in shotgun- read play written on board- and run it.

Jameis is a prodigy. We must take him first

  195. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

What combine did you watch Capt. Tim?

  196. Jeagan1999 Says:

Both QBs looked very good today. My choice would still be Mariota because of the scrambling ability and the lack of baggage. The arm strength and throwing ability looked to be a push.

  197. Eric Says:

You know when even BSPN says Winston had a great day throwing, he must have.

  198. Eastsidebuc Says:

In the season of lent I have given a a few things. Another will be not reading the comments on joebucsfan. Ya’ll need to stop trolling each other.

  199. Skyline Crew Says:

Was wondering the same. Only thing said about Mariota was that he didn’t call plays in a huddle. Analyst said while he was throwing and after that he should be fine in his 5 and 7 step drops. It has been notes several times he reads defenses. Next thing you’ll say is he is a run first QB and doesn’t go through progressions. Haha

  200. knuckledragger Says:

True Jeagan, I didnt think that Mariota had the arm strength and throwing ability that Winston had because I have only watched three Oregon games this yr while I watched 11 of the FSU games but they both only made one bad throw so Push is the way to say it. I do have concerns with Mariota not being a huddler tho so Im still not sold on either. But they both looked impressive.

  201. ed Says:

Theres no denying Jameis has got talent. I wont be surprised if he goes on to have success in the NFL in a short amount of time. What I worry about is can he handle that success or will he implode like Freeman? I commend him for putting on a good show for the coaches and gms. Hes at least acting like theres millions on the line. I still fear his immature side will surface after he gets millions and theres nothing more to lose.

  202. Jeagan1999 Says:

Knuckledragger..valid points, but Mariota is smart and incredibly athletic, things like huddling and foot works he will learn. In fact, his footwork today looked nearly flawless. He has a very quick release (although I was impressed with Winstons release too…even if it is still just a tad slower and his wind up a tad longer). I think both have great skills. Strong and accurate arms, and good pocket awareness. I just think Mariota is safer off the field, and I think his speed and scrambling ability will work better with the suspect offensive line we have. I would not be too upset if Winston was the guy….as long as he doesn’t do anything to just the team off the field.

  203. Eric Says:

It’s tough to read the tea leaves.

Some very well respected people who should know the goings on at OBP say they prefer Winston. If that was the case pre-combine it ought to still hold true now.

And the vast majority of the mocks say Winston. (Lesser of a factor cause a lot of bozos do mocks)

Lovie sure went out of his was to defend Jameis for the off field stuff.

Then again Lovie has said he likes athletes at every position, which Marcus damn sure is, and that connection of our OC to Oregon is still there.

6o/40 its Jameis? Rank speculation of course.

  204. knuckledragger Says:

@Jaegen it would seem as if we think alike. I too will support Winston if he passes the investigation but I lean Mariota if we take a QB. Both still have a Pro day and Private workouts to do more wooing so we will see. Im still interested in a Bounty of picks since both did so well at the Combine. Certainly drove the value of the First overall pick UP. Ive been here since ’76 so I will roll with the punches as always

  205. The Real Drew Says:

Joe just creamed his pants during that segment

  206. iamkingsu Says:

“or Vincent Jackson” lol. If the Lovie don’t turn that card in for Jameis and get this guy a playbook and contract out the way. I know you’ll saw the kid with mooch. Natural Born Leader

  207. Ian_620WDAE Says:

Im sold, after that segment and overall what he did at the combine, how could you not want this kid as our QB.

Im sure the trolls will scream crab legs and rape but that is to be expected regardless

  208. ndog Says:

For the record I don’t hate anyone I just know what I want and what I believe. As a season ticket holder I am not going throw good money away if after one year of watching Maroita stink or be average. That’s all I am saying.

  209. jody Says:

We need mariota!!! He’s fast and can make all the throws. How many turnovers for Winston? The bucs cant recover from that many ints 28?. NO NFL team can!! He’s slow, small hands which is why Shawn king likes him. Shoulder delivery is leftwich and brains of leaf. Sure draft a guy #1 that needs a babysitter? When you can get a stud!!

An excerpt from Lord of the Rings below:

King of the Dead: Who enters my domain? [the King materialises]
Aragorn: One who will have your allegiance.
King of the Dead: The Dead do not suffer the living to pass.
Aragorn: You will suffer me! [the King of the Dead laughs, which echoes round the cavern. The army of the dead emerge from the far side. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli are surrounded.]
King of the Dead: The way is shut. It was made by those who are dead. and we dead keep it. The way is shut. Now you must die! [Legolas fires an arrow. It passes through the King as if nothing was there.]
Aragorn: I summon you to fulfill your oath.
King of the Dead: None but the King of Gondor may command me! [Aragorn raises Andúril, blocking the king’s blow] That line was broken!
Aragorn: [holding the sword to the King’s throat] It has been remade! [pushes the king back] Fight for us, and regain your honour. [looks around at the army] What say you?
Gimli: You’re wasting your time, Aragorn. They had little honour in life, they have none now in death.
Aragorn: I am Isildur’s heir. Fight, and I will Hold your oaths fulfilled. What say you!
[the king of the Dead laughs. The army starts to vanish.]
Aragorn: You have my word! Fight, and I shall release you from this living death! What say you! [the army vanishes]
Gimli: Stand, you traitors! [the cavern collapses – thousands of skulls fall on the heroes]
Aragorn: Out! [the three escape. They emerge to find the Corsair ships on the river. Aragorn kneels in despair. He hears a noise from behind, and turns around. The King of the Dead emerges from the wall.]
King of the Dead: We fight!

    Come what may…

  212. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I think today was the best thing that could have happened. Both look like franchise qbs, which means we have a greater chance of not screwing this thing up. I’m going to be thrilled with either, although I’m still on favor of Winston. I do have to say, I’m really surprised by the lack of athleticism with Winston. He put up some numbers I think I could beat. I know I could beat his vertical. Good thing that’s one of the positions that being a great athlete isn’t always a necessity.

  213. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I feel very confident that both guys are better than any qb on our roster, from day one.

  214. Eric Says:

    After the segment I’m at 80/20 now……

  216. jody Says:

Why do Winston’s int’s not worry any of the Seminole faithful? Easiest schedule by far for last 2 yrs. When faced with adversity against Oregon he was a no show. That fall backwards fumble? Leftwich was better!! Still is! 28 int’s? Come on people wake up.

  217. Eric Says:

All the scrutiny and pressure on that kid, knowing how many people wanted him to fall flat on his face or even make one little mistake, and he was flawless.

Doesn’t seem to bother him a bit.

  218. lurker Says:

we need a qb. hell, we needed one last year.

That coming from actual team reps who interviewed him at the combine!

    Wow!

  222. lurker Says:

college int’s does not equal nfl int’s. also, how many int’s did bret favre throw? there is more to it. winston makes it so effortless. his throws drop into the bucket.

mariota did well, but it was not as effortless. mariota has fumbles and sacks. mariota was sacked 7 times by a 3 win washington state team. 4.52 did not help him then. int’s are bad and so are missed throws.

  223. jody Says:

They played tough schedules on the road and home. Winston had gravy both years? Was beat by Auburn until they lost for themselves. Oregon game when it counted he sucked. Florida he sucked. Def won that one for him? Just like Auburn! He didn’t do anything.

  224. lurker Says:

nothing we say will change your mind, jody. you just want the second-best qb in this draft and we can’t change your mind. i would take winston #1 though, and so would most analysts.

  225. Eric Says:

Somebody refresh my memory, did anybody ever say Leftwich was the smartest QB they ever interviewed?

Did he ever throw the ball as Winston did today?

  233. lurker Says:

please don’t feed the troll. jody can read all the past articles or many of the evaluations online. jody did not see the combine, nor ben roethlisberger play last year. jody ignores the fact that mariota will need to play in a specialized offense as helfrich stated, misses open receivers, and i’ve watched being a sack magnet.

  234. jody Says:

So you still feel warm and fuzzy with that many int’s and that easy schedule? In college? We are talking pro ball here?

  235. jody Says:

Did anyone see comb I combine today? Mariota is a better athlete period!! Numbers in college are way better. Character is way better. Even Mike Mayock says winstons int’s scare him? Are you drunk on garnet and gold cool aid?

  236. knuckledragger Says:

    @Jody…….
I am not a Winston supporter. He threw 18 this past yr and 10 in his first.
That is not necessarily an alarming number of Ints. It is slightly distressing that his ints almost doubled in one yr. Some will say it is because of other teams getting film on him. Some will say the loss of KB and others. Point being many other QBs have thrown more Ints. the yr before entering the draft. There is no doubt in my mind that JW would be able to overcome all the On Field issues that evaluators have a problem with. Especially after watching him throw today with a supposed ‘weak shoulder’. I just doubt the rest and with good reason in any sound mind.

  237. jody Says:

Its not all about the tape they have on him people. Its the slow leftwich delivery when it starts they key on to it. It wont work in NFL. Cant db’s are to fast.

  238. Skyline Crew Says:

I prefer Mariota over Winston. The kid is so smart and adapts very well. I don’t believe he will have a steep learning curve because all he does is sleep, eat, breathe football. He looked spectacular at the combine today. The long throws just dropped in there. Was nice to watch.

And in the same article, who does he rate as the better QB prospect? Hint, not Mariota. So if you want to reference Mayock, than good, because he wants Winston.

  240. Capt.Tim Says:

    Mariotaorwinstonwhatever.

I watched the entire combine. You should have skipped it, and switched to some reading aid for dumbasses
Then you would have read AND understood that what I wrote was a loose quote from Kurt Warner- as I stated.

Everything I listed there was true. Mariota has a long way to go
    Jameis is ready now

  241. jody Says:

Who pays Mike Mayock? Oh ESPN. He might have to create some false advertising for guys to hype the draft? Answer my previous question? You can cant you?

Im not a Winston hater as I just explained above. Im also not a Mariota supporter. To say that Jameis is ready now is a stretch. Us common folk dont have the skinny.

You seriously believe that he has NO EXPERIENCE reading defense? You think he can’t take a snap under center? Or adjust a play? He looked great at the combine throwing the ball and also proved that he is much more athletic than Winston. Winston looked great too and was impressive on the mic. It’s not a huge deal that Mariota can run faster than him or jump higher as long as he has a good arm and touch with the ball, which he does.

But if you seriously came away from today’s combine with NEGATIVE thoughts on either QB’s performance, then you’re a moron.

  258. lurker Says:

mariota needs a specialized offense. everyone agrees.

  259. SuperSam Says:

Mariota is our guy, it was a good act put on by Jameis though. Once he gets his money hell go back to the same ol Jameis, Johhny Rehab put on a pretty good act around this time last year to, remember Joe?? He hoodwinked the browns pretty good, and I suppose Jameis will hoodwink some poor team to, it just wont be this team. I can look at our recent offensive coaching hires to reassure myslef the pick will be Mariota. Keotter has ties to Mariota and Bajakian is a mastermind in the spread offense….hmmmmmmmmmmm

  260. SuperSam Says:

NFL network just showed a poll on who the bucs should take and Mariota won by a landslide. Wasn’t even close. The fans have spoken!

  261. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    @lurker

I disagree. Mariota would for sure thrive in a specialized offense (Chip Kelly), but he doesn’t NEED one IMO. I believe he is fully capable of learning a pro-style offense. That is the risk with taking him.

  262. lurker Says:

scott reynolds had an excellent opinion on koetter’s offense than yours, supersam.

“Despite the fact that new Bucs quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian was the offensive coordinator at Central Michigan (2007-09), Cincinnati (2010-12) and Tennessee (2013-14) under Butch Jones and ran a version of the spread offense, it wasn’t the same as the offense Mariota ran at Oregon. And Bajakian won’t be calling plays in Tampa Bay. That’s offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter’s job, and he’s never run the spread offense before.

Despite the attempts by some to connect Koetter to the spread offense, his tenure at Oregon ended in 1997 – 12 years before Kelly brought the spread to the Ducks program. While Koetter and current Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich coached together for nearly a decade at Boise State and Arizona State, Koetter has only run a pro-style offense and developed pocket passers over his career.

Without the Bucs switching to the spread offense, and it doesn’t look like that will happen with Koetter at the helm, drafting Mariota just doesn’t make sense. Especially when there is an exceptional pocket passer in Winston to select with the first overall pick.”

  263. Mumbles Says:

Waiting to see Mariota at the white board. Gruden would be good choice!

  264. lurker Says:

the scott reynolds article also said:

“The scout said if the Buccaneers want a pocket passer then they should draft Winston. If Tampa Bay wants to commit to running a spread-style offense then it should draft Mariota. It’s really that simple, according to the scout.

I agree. The Bucs should not draft Mariota and try to convert him into a pocket passer. He’s just not that type of quarterback, and hasn’t shown the ability to consistently throw into tight windows. According to NFL talent evaluators I’ve spoken with, that type of anticipation and accuracy is more of an innate trait than it is a teachable skill.

You either have it or you don’t. Personally, I don’t think Mariota has it, and there are other skeptics out there that agree with me.”

  265. Luther Says:

Just watched Jameis at the chalkboard…wow…he made me want to run out and buy a jersey right now.

  266. WS99 Says:

    Thank you sir

  267. lurker Says:

    where was that, luther?

  268. cmurda Says:

Well, lurker I happen to think that Mariota’s got a learning curve but none of us really know it for sure which really makes the choice obvious. We know Winston can handle a pro style offense. Don’t now Mariota can handle it. No-brainer. Guarantee you that none of the organizations out there are concerned with off the field stuff especially now.

  269. cmurda Says:

    Don’t know Mariota….

  270. knuckledragger Says:

    Supersam……………..Link for the poll?
    I cant find it.

  271. lurker Says:

    scott reynolds also stated:

“While most NFL scouts and talent evaluators believe Mariota would take a couple of years to develop if a team wanted him to transition into a pocket passer capable of taking snaps under center, reading defenses and making calls at the line of scrimmage and quickly going through progressions in the passing game, Smith and general manager Jason Licht don’t have the time to develop him. Coming off a 2-14 season – and with Glennon not showing the ability to be a winning starting quarterback in the NFL, evidenced by his 4-14 record over the past two years – Smith and Licht don’t have the luxury of going through a 4-12 season in 2015 while their first-round pick develops behind the scenes in practice, but not on Sundays. If they took that approach, there could be a coaching and front office change in 2016 after two dismal seasons at the helm, and Smith and Licht could simply be drafting and developing Mariota for the next regime.

“The Bucs would have to incorporate the spread offense for Mariota to quickly transition to the NFL and play as a rookie, and given Smith’s opinion on protecting the quarterback and the hiring of Koetter as the team’s offensive coordinator, it doesn’t look like that would happen. It makes the most sense for Tampa Bay to draft a pocket passer like Winston with the first overall pick instead.”

Davis has Mariota going #1 to the Bucs and Winston went #10 to the Rams. Opinions are changing.

  283. lurker Says:

“Smith said he wanted a Seahawks offense so Mariota would be that guy.”

    lovie said this:
“I’m keeping all options open, from spread looks to – again, I just want to be able to run and pass the football when we need to and when we want to. It’s kind of as simple as that and as we mold this Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense together, it’s not like I’m going to be over the guy’s shoulder saying ‘Hey, do this or do that.’ I’ve given offensive coordinators that I’ve had a lot of full range to implement their system.”

the scott reynolds article covered that, too.
from the article (including lovie’s quote above):

“Smith went on to point out some of the negatives associated with the spread offense, especially running it at the NFL level where defenders are bigger and faster and scrambling quarterbacks like RGIII have shown a tendency to get hurt.

(lovie’s quote)“I think it’s a good offense, but with every good offense there are some negatives I guess you would say [and one of those] is about protecting the quarterback,” Smith said. “On the other side of the ball, when you’re playing read-option teams, eventually most read-option quarterbacks get hurt I think, so you want to try to protect your quarterback as much as possible, but to occasionally have a couple of those [plays] in your offensive attack is a must nowadays.”

“To Smith’s point, Winston is athletic and mobile enough to run a couple of quarterback draws and keepers to surprise defenses. He’s not the statue in the pocket that current Bucs backup Mike Glennon is.”

  284. lurker Says:

lol. keep trying skyline. you point to one mock, but say your mock is better than mayock’s opinion. just showing you how most feel.

you can keep wanting the second best qb prospect, i’ll take winston #1.

  285. knuckledragger Says:

Can’t believe there is still so much argument before Pro days and Personal workouts. We, the fanbase know nothing outside of what we saw this week and the ramblings of NFL writers trying to get hits on their pages. Smoke does not equal fire for the next couple months.

  286. lurker Says:

  287. Skyline Crew Says:

Seahawks have gone to back to back superbowls. The offense works well. Also, I didn’t say Davis’ was better you were making it sound like Mayocks was. I’d rather have Mariota #1.

I said opinions were changing. Mariota showed the ease of his deep balls and his nice footwork. Mariota and Winston both did very well. Mariota is just an elite athlete overall. I prefer him due to all of his intangibles. Again though it depends on what type of offense we want to run. Do we want to run a GB/Seattle/49ers/Panthers/Broncos/Eagles type spread offense or do we want to run a Cowboys/Patriots offense.

FA will tell us more than the Media ever could.

  307. BoltIsle Says:

I will preface this by saying I am a FSU grad, admittedly a little bias.

That said, I would be ok with either one, though prefer Jameis. I will still renew my Bucs tickets if Mariota is the pick. There are some truly delusional people on this thread. Unless you get a ridiculous trade offer when in the top two picks, you don’t trade down and you don’t draft a DE when there are two potential franchise QB’s. Go to Vegas? Sure it’s a gamble, but you roll the dice.
I have no problem questioning Winston’s maturity, but have a factual basis for it. Only he and the girl truly know what happened. Fact: his version has been consistent and she’s had several different versions. She’d be more believable if she had some consistensy. Tally PD has been consistently inept for years now. People want to make it strictly a FSU football thing, but Greg Dent would argue with you. He married her and they have a family.

As for the crab legs, he paid his debt to society like Michael Vick did. If not good enough, you need to change the judicial system. Was it dumb? Without question. I think some are butt hurt because Publix did what the gators and hurricanes couldn’t do.

Then, the ridiculous arguement over number of picks. Any good QB is going to make dumb throws at times that leave you scratching your head. It’s their confidence in themselves and their teammates. I’ve done it on more than one occasion with the Mannings, Favre, Brady, Wilson (Super Bowl?) and Marino.
I recall numerous dumb throws by McCown and Glennon walking to the parking lot the past couple years. I like Glennon, but he was Wilson’s back up in Raliegh. For a reason. High risk, high reward. I could argue that Mariota wouldn’t get all those fumbles back if they’d have happened in the NFL.

As for the Rose Bowl game, the better team won. That said, if you really watched that game, you should have noted a couple of things. When the game was close in the first half, Mariota made some throws that were high to open receivers. And I watched this knowing the Bucs had the first pick. To say Jameis didn’t show up for that game is idiocy. Someone who doesn’t show up, doesn’t get his offense over 500 yards of total offense. Jameis got over 500 yards. Was it his best game? No. Did they deserve to lose? Yes. People want to take his fumble returned for a TD as a show as to how he played and that is totally inaccurate. Did the defense for FSU quit after the second Cook fumble on the first drive in the third quarter? I wouldn’t argue that point with you.

As for Joe, GTFOH if you have problem with this site. I have never noted him to be an objective “journalist”. If you disagree, you have two options. Start your own blog and give your own opinion or post knowing its someone giving their opinion.

The condescension and personal attacks are from both view points. People need to quit trying act like it’s only from people favoring Winston. There is a core of about five to ten Mariota “supporters” who bait Winston people with repetitive language that has no merit from an objectivity stand point. Winston could walk on water and they’d claim it was iced over if the water had been in Tahiti.

It’s ok to support one guy over the over, but if you have to tear the other up personally, you have a very weak argument. Hopefully, the Glazers have hired some competent detectives to get the real truth. I don’t think Jameis is prefect, but he’s not the anti-Christ either.

    Combine: Winston’s Workout Report
    February 21, 2015 08:38 PM | Joe Kania

    Buccaneers.com/news

    “GRADE: A

OVERVIEW: Winston’s decision to throw at the combine proved to be a wise one. Although throwing in shorts and a t-shirt without a rush or defensive backs isn’t an exact simulation of a game, Winston put almost every one of his passes right where he wanted to. His release was shortened up from the enlongated baseball motion he sometimes reverted to and he displayed excellent footwork in his five and seven-step drops. On Thursday, it was reported that Winston had “weakness by a nerve” in his throwing shoulder, but the injury didn’t have an effect on his performance. Winston’s 40-yard dash was 10th of the 13 quarterbacks, but it’s safe to say he probably won’t be running a 40-yard straight line on Sundays. His meetings with coaches and general managers seem to have gone well. NFL analyst Steve Mariucci referred to Winston as “the smartest QB” he’s ever met with.

WHAT HE’S SAYING: “I believe I accomplished what I needed to,” Winston said. “I just came here trying to be real, be as genuine as possible.” In reference to his meetings with coaches, Winston continued, “It wasn’t tough at all. Like I said, I was being real. I wasn’t trying to put on any show or anything. I didn’t even get coached up like I should have been coached up. I took responsibility for everything and was just real.”

    PASSING GRADE: A

    40-YARD DASH: 4.97 Seconds

    BENCH PRESS: N/A

    VERTICAL: 28.5 Inches

    Combine: Mariota’s Workout Report
    February 21, 2015 08:50 PM | Joe Kania

    Buccaneers.com

    “GRADE: A-

OVERVIEW: There were high expectations for Mariota in the physical tests, particularly the 40-yard dash. Still, he impressed coaches and scouts. He ran a 4.52, the fastest of any quarterback at the combine. Auburn’s Nick Marshall finished .02 behind him and Marshall is expected to play cornerback at the next level. A concern with Mariota was how he would perform in three, five and seven-step drops from under center after playing primarily out of the shotgun in college. He displayed very quick feet and was accurate on most of his throws.

WHAT HE’S SAYING: “I think I did alright,” Mariota said. “I thought that I missed a couple throws. I’m a perfectionist so I always want to try to complete every ball. I thought everyone did well today. I thought as a group, we threw well today so it was a lot of fun.”

    PASSING GRADE: B

    40-YARD DASH: 4.52 Seconds

    VERTICAL: 36 Inches

BROAD JUMP: 10 Feet, 1 inch”

Mariotta was on his toes and I’m still hung up on the whole ” I need to learn how to huddle and call plays”.

If I could, I would draft them both. JDub for QB and MM for #3 receiver. #mastermind

Well let’s see the results next week at this time but according to Dcprosports
which I have followed for months Winston has recently increased his lead in the mock drafts. To cite one poll favoring Mariota is misleading and giving a wrong impression of how the young man is doing. I simply wanted all to know that not just picking the one mock draft but looking at the last 45 different Mock drafts it is actually Winston convincingly in the lead. My prediction is that Mariota will pick up slightly considering he held up well in the combine. I’d be happy with either but we MUST choose QB with the first pick.

I think it’s time we had a player at QB that had a sense of urgency, charisma and smarts that makes the team relevant again. He seems to be owning up to his past (something not everyone can or could, no matter how vile, ugly or immature). I’m sooooooo tired of losing every year. I want the players who give us the best chance to win NOW.

  359. T-BAY FAN 4 LIFE Says:

Winston is a good Bullshi**er that’s all there is to it. He’s been coached up on what to say and how to answer questions. X’S & O’S on a whiteboard did anyone listen to him say his college coach got on him about the board so he had to be good at it. That doesn’t mean when it’s game time he will make the right decisions the NFL is too fast for him and the D-FENCES will continually bring pressure and Winston will throw picks. We will see what happens in the Draft I personally hope the BUCS don’t pick Winston but if they do I can’t wait to see all you people that want the BUCS to draft him CRYING for the BUCS to get rid of him. The video of Winston with Mariucci was genuinely impressive, as was his throwing workout.

Still, I can’t help thinking that both of these QBs could be great, yet that among the two, there’s more reason and basis for the concern that Winston could “bust” for non-football reasons than for the concern that Mariota’s football skills won’t pan out in the NFL.

One thing of note: The assertion that he (Winston) hasn’t been ‘coached up’ on how to handle these interviews and speaking opportunities is complete BS, and a red flag about his character in and of itself. EVERY SINGLE ONE of these guys has been coached-up for that aspect, and every one of the coaches, GMs and scouts scrutinizing them knows it. If you’re gonna bother to lie about something that would have been a non-issue, I’m sure gonna question your veracity when you’re trying to convince me about something more important.

The rest of his Eddie Haskell routine was fine. He’s a likeable kid, and clearly has a high football IQ, but c’mon man, don’t talk about earning the Glazers’ trust while lying about the fact that your agent (et al) helped you practice the wording and delivery of such answers.

  365. White Tiger Says:

wow, Kid Fameis knows the most basic west coast offense play, where everyone was supposed to go, and what there routes were…and he was asked to diagram this most basic west coast offense play, by a coach who ran the west coast offense.

    wow.

  366. White Tiger Says:

Tell me again about the time Gruden asked Cam Newton to diagram his favorite play at Auburn…because THAT was obviously indicative of the lack of success we could expect from Cam Newton at the next level…

By the way – why the heck do I care what this jack wagon has to say about Kid Fameis ability to call a base WCO play…and what MOOCH’s opinion means, exactly?

…cuz last I checked Marriucci CUT Jerry Rice AND Kurt Warner…

  367. Caleb Says:

There’s a difference between a hater and a realist: a hater makes up things to try and make someone look bad, a realist doesn’t have to make stuff up, the person that they talk about makes themselves look bad. Ya, he may be smart but so was Ryan Fitzpatrick. I see an overweight kid that lacks maturity. For those of you that think his ability is to good to pass up, let me give you a quote from Kevin Durant: “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard”. Winston reminds me of Jamarcus Russell, all the talent in the world but lack of work ethic, and is so confident in his talent that you can tell he thinks he won’t have to work in the NFL to be good. With the #1 pick I think that you have to be completely certain this guy can make an impact from day one. I just don’t see it from either QB. I think try to trade the pick for where we can get the eat value, if no one will trade we should draft Lenoard Williams or Shane Ray. I don’t care what any of these dumbass media people think about QB’s and offense. The only thing offense does is sell tickets, score points and let you down. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!! Any true Bucs fan knows that.

  368. BoltIsle Says:

@Caleb – Where did you learn Winston has no work ethic?

  369. Rasta Mon Says:

Oh mon! You got 370 replies, mon!
Ha ha! You be troll’in, mon.

  370. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Mariucci also said Leonard Williams “could be the #1 pick”. He should be. Barring injury he is the only one out of the top 3 that is as close to a guarantee as you can get in the NFL draft. He plays all 3 downs, never takes plays off, can play any spot on the line. This kid is the real deal. You can’t say that about either one of the QBs. They are both good with potential. Williams will be a starter and a stud from day 1. He would allow us to have a Seattlesque D Line. Which helps out the rest of our D. Make the right decision L&L please for the love of God.

  371. Caleb Says:

What makes you think he does? Is a better question… Usually guys that talk like there talent is all they need don’t think they have to work on anything (ex. Jonny Manziel). Another sign is guys who looks out of shape, what I mean by this is someone who’s weight changes. Ya, he lost some weight before the combine, but I think this is just so people (scouts) don’t criticize him for that as well. A good ex. Of QB’s who’s weight change a lot- Jamarcus Russell and Josh Freeman. Neither work hard to be a good player in the NFL because they both thought they had the talent so put in extra work wasn’t needed. The biggest of all the signs that he doesn’t have the work ethic to make it, is his immaturity, more than likely he’ll get himself into trouble before they question his ability to put in the work to be better after he struggles. Guys who are immature are had to coach because they think they already got it all figured out, which he clearly does just from what I heard him say in his press conference. Trust me, this guy is in for a big surprise and the Bucs are in for a big disappointment if they draft him. But I’ll still support the team no matter what. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! That I’ll all I have to say.

  372. Caleb Says:

    I agree funkymunkey

  373. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

    @Caleb

JaMarcus, Freeman, Cullpepper, McNabb, and Vince Young all had the same issues. Weight problems ended up hurting all of their careers. Some sooner than others. But they all had that issue. I see Shameis sliding right into that category. He did lose some weight, but was still too flabby. He needs to tone up like Mariotta. There are way too many questions and concerns for him to be the #1 pick. If we stay take Williams, or trade down for a ransom of picks and players. The more realistic option is Williams. Our D would be soooo nasty with him, GMC, McDonald, Johnson, and whatever players we add in FA and or draft. That will help out our secondary and allow them to play more aggressive and with all that pressure on the QBs, will give them more opportunities for picks.

  374. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Williams ran the same 40 time as Shameis but weighs 70 pounds more. Had a very impressive 10 yard split 1.72. Go on NFL.com and pull up the article that is titled Williams runs a 4.97 40. The guy is the real thing and we will regret passing on him if we do. He is a machine in the weight room and even more so on the field. He is great against the run and pass. He had 35.5 tackles for loss in his career with 20 sacks. I have yet to hear one negative about the guy. That is who you take with the #1 pick. You can’t afford to miss on the #1 pick or its sets you too far behind the eight ball. And what he would allow the rest of our D to do as far as schemes and blitzes or lack there of. I hope he had a great interview. And we went all offense last year in the draft. You know Lovie is a defensive guru. He won’t allow that to happen two straight years. GMC93 and Leo94 that is a scary combo and no one can debate that.

  375. Caleb Says:

I can’t agree more with you @funkeymunkey. The only negative I see is that he played for USC. If this guy was to play for a team like BAMA they’d be saying that the Bucs would be dumb not to take him.

  376. White Tiger Says:

Um…we already actually have a BEAST that can run a 4.93 40, and he kind of already plays at the DE position…and that’s not exactly a good thing…his name is William Gholston.

Even have one that ran EXACTLY 4.97, and not only did he ALREADY play DE in college, but he was said to have “rare” athleticism…HIS name is Michael Johnson…

In the kind of defense we run, we kind of need a BEAST that can run FASTER than 4.97…heck, we actually have some of those too…but what this defense needs at the RUSH END is someone that can run faster than the 4.7 that Adrian Claiborne, and Larry English turned in…they have to be able to close on an opposing QB

See, it doesn’t actually help to have Leonard Williams, unless you’re looking to replace the under tackle who can already run the 40 in 4.97 (well, technically it’s a shade over 5.0…), but since he’s also considered a BEAST, it’s probably best that we keep a proven Gerald McCoy, and just pass on the potential of Leonard Williams…

  377. Caleb Says:

Shane Ray is the guy you would like then. A little undersized but considered more of an edge rusher. I really like this guy as well, just not sure if he’s #1 worthy. But I disagree with you on Lenoard Williams, I think this guy can be a game changer. Just so you know also Michael Johnson will be much better this year than last. He wasn’t a hundred percent all season with that ankle injury, but proved he can play through pain. A hundred percent Michael Johnson, Gerald McCoy and then add Lenoard Williams to the mix… I think we’d be doing great. I’m also really sold in Shane Ray though, this guy could be a beast!

  378. Caleb Says:

I just don’t want us to wast time with one of these QBs that going to need time to develop, and the even bigger question is can they. Too many things in question, if it were me sitting with the number 1 pick I wouldn’t draft either QB. As I said before you have to be certain that a #1 pick can change things for you team day one (in a positive way). Neither of these QBs can.

  379. Caleb Says:

    DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!

  380. Caleb Says:

Eli manning has two rounds rings and Peyton has only one… You think that’s because Eli is the better QB?

  381. Caleb Says:

    Super Bowl/round

  382. Caleb Says:

Just look as soon as the past two super bowls the last defensive play wins the game for the patriots NOT TOM BRADY, and the year before the Seahawks held the so called “greatest offense ever” (statistically speaking) to only 8 points. Neither star studded QB won the game for there teams, the defense won for Tom Brady and Peyton didn’t have a defense to win for him so he got his ass kicked in dominant fashion.

#Dont buy into the QB hype
    #Defense wins championships

  383. lurker Says:

funny. why hide on this back thread?

how the hell you going to get to a championship without a great qb?

i think it was a spread wb who couldn’t hit the tight window or read the defense that lost the superbowl.
it is just silly to think the pats would even be there without brady.

also funny caleb how you explainyour definition of troll and realist, and then troll about winston. smh

  384. BoltIsle Says:

Winston has faults, like maturity, but work ethic isn’t one of them. People can say he was cocahed for the interviews, and they all are, but the way he handled the blackboard is not something a slacker could easily do.
If it were true, you would have heard much more about that and his being a bad teammate in Tallahassee. Neither has ever been claimed.

  385. Caleb Says:

I guess that only time will tell fellas. Everyone has there own opinion on this. You guys have yours, and I have mine. Lurker to answer your question about the great QB, all I have to say is “Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer”. I’m to ignor the rest of what you said because it’s not worth mine time.

BoltIsle- you might be right about the work ethic stuff all I’m really trying to say is if it were me and I had any question in wether a guy could get it done after I draft him with the number one pick, I wouldn’t do it. Both QBs have to many things to question for them to go #1 overall in my opinion.

  386. lurker Says:

    wow…only 2. hmmmmmmmmmmmm

and you all are silly to keep short-changing brad johnaon. he was a great qb. look back at his numbers with the vikings before the bucs. great arm, mobile, and smart. smh

  387. Caleb Says:

Haha, I’d like to talk to you in person if you want to get in a real debate about it. I’m not saying you don’t need an effective QB, just not a great one man. Come on bro. I’ll give you this brad Johnson was an efficient QB, but to say he was an great one… No! He got carried by a great defense. I just not a proponent of the you have to have a great QB to win, I don’t buy into the QB hype. I think it’s better to have a efficient QB, not one the setting records but just does his job. I’m more of a believer in a well rounded team: Efficent QB, got to have a good OL (most important on offense), a RB that does it all or two or three that make up a great RB, WRs that aren’t selfish and run crisp routes, a TE that can do it all and finally you need to a a playmaker at every position on D.

I think we have the QB already in Glennon, just give him a better OL, which he hasn’t had since he’s been here and I think he would be Very effective with the talent we already have on offense, but I think we’re still a few guys short on the defensive side, mainly on the D line and then safety because I don’t think Goldston will be with us next season.

I’m not ignorant man, I understand the having a great QB makes you a way better team, but I also think it most of the time makes you one demetional. I just don’t want to see us use another draft pick on a QB that has to many uncertainties, especially when I think we already have a guy that can be effective on our roster at the QB position.

  388. Caleb Says:

No response lurker… I must say I’m surprised. I was hopping that’d you would atleast see my point, and realize I’m not a hater on Winston or Mariota. I just see things a different way than most do when it comes to the QB position. That’s cool though bro, it was fun. I can clearly see you and I see things a completely different way when it comes to how this team can be successful, but to be honest to me, that’s what makes this all good fun debating. One thing we have in common is you can tell we both care about the direction of this franchise.
