Bucs Opening(s) Coveted

January 2nd, 2015

Joe has learned former NFL offensive assistant and college head coach Charlie Weis would love to work with Lovie Smith.

Recently re-signed receiver Louis Murphy and tight end Brandon Myers stated, in part, they wanted to be with the Bucs for the soon-to-come turnaround.

Murphy, in particular, said he believes in Lovie Smith and is convinced the Bucs will soon be a force in the NFC South.

Those two players are not alone.

Assistants, both in and out of the NFL, have their antennae in the air over the Bucs offensive coordinator gig, and the expected future opening at quarterbacks coach, replacing the ill-suited Marcus Arroyo.

Joe figures this little nugget will be nice to carry through the rest of the first Friday of the calendar year 2015.

Joe received a call this afternoon from someone he knows and trusts who is a family friend of former NFL assistant and college head coach Charlie Weis. In short, Weis is more than a little interested in the Bucs’ opening(s) Bucs and would gladly accept a staff job if given an opportunity.

So Bucs fans who think there are folks out there with long resumes, who have no interest in working with Lovie Smith, think again.

This should provide a decent pool of candidates to sift through in the coming days (weeks?).

I just got done throwing up. Has anyone else here studied Lovie’s draft picks throughout his career. Holy crap we are in serious trouble. Please folks, pray for us.

  2. canadian bucsfan Says:

    Interesting!

  3. bucrightoff Says:

Fire Lovie, go get Chip. It’s the move the franchise has to make.

  4. Hawk Says:

Why not? Everyone who watched the NFC South believes that next year, with just 8 wins, the Bucs will vie for the playoffs and ANY new coach can (graciously) accept the accolades for the turn-around. I wonder how many will want a ONE year contract, or ‘weasel’ clause.

  5. Matt Says:

Ehhh if Weiss was booted out of UF what makes you think he can do well on a professional team? The answer to that little riddle is nothing. Because he won’t. Tom Brady helped Weiss get paid. Weiss did an admirable job with Brady Quinn at ND but it’s been tough sledding ever since. He’s better than Arroyo but that ain’t good enoigh to save Lovie’s job and ultimately our franchise.

  6. Rrsrq Says:

Though I would like Weiss, he moves a lot, may be looking to retire to Florida

  7. unbelievable Says:

No thank you to Weis, but I do hope that the legitimate candidates feel the same way as him!

  8. White Tiger Says:

The only way Weiss would make sense is if the Bucs plan to trade down – and settle for a drop-back style QB – like Bryce Petty.

  9. Tom Edrington Says:

Charlie found out the Bucs have a great cafeteria……

I met a young fellow here in Tampa two years ago who used to work for the Patriots, trust me, the Bucs DO NOT want to hire Charlie…….he spent the majority of his time in New England in the training room, at one point Belichick had to come in there and tell him to get the hell out…..

Not long after he had his stomach tied off, he was in the training room eating a dozen glazed donuts……then he tried to sue the docs who performed the surgery

  10. DallasBuc Says:

Weiss? Who gives a sht. This guy has had zero success outside of Belichek’s teams. Weiss being interested proves nothing. He is another hack that can’t stand on his own 2 feet.

  11. Buccfan37 Says:

Lovie has already done all the messing up he is going to do. More messing up is grounds for dismissal. Lovie will shape up and linger.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

I don’t buy it for a minute. Working for Lovie is career suicide on the offensive side of ball. Sounds like BS spin to me.

  13. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

retreads….after Lovie is fired next year…I want young forward thinking HC and staff….it is clear how the game has changed rapidily and will continue to do so…

  14. Report: Charlie Weis interested in a Bucs’ opening » The Bay Cave Says:

[…] to JoeBucsFan.com, former NFL assistant Charlie Weis has interest in being a part of Lovie Smith’s coaching […]

  15. knucknbuc Says:

Hmmm I learned from these here pages that lovie was a goof that had no idea what the hell he is doing anymore. That he would have to overpay to get players to come here and no offensive coordinator in his right mind would want to come here to work with lovie because he would tell them to run the ball 90 percent of the time. Despite us ranking 32 in run offense and run carries with a ill suited qb coach/coordinator running things.

    Strange.

  16. DB55 Says:

    Joe

We will have to define “good” for future conversation. Being fired from college positions for an inability to win fb games does NOT constitute “good”. Now show me an NFL winner and I’m with you.

So thus far Weiss and the TE coach from the 2-14 Titans. Whoa, hold me down I’m getting too excited here. Washed-up has beens like Lovie = perfect match and ensures us a lottery pick for the next 5 years. #facepalm

  17. BucNears Says:

Let’s hope this isn’t weeks. Once new head coaches start getting hired then the good OC’s will begin to get gobbled up. It’s a little disappointing Lovie and Licht didn’t have a short list being we’ve been without an OC all year. I would have thought the new guy would be in place by now.

  18. The Buc Realist Says:

I had to google ” charlie weis” because i thought he was out of football.

    but i am glad to hear a nugget from Joe’s father’s brother’s nephew’s cousin’s former roommate.

  19. Joe Dunn Says:

Weiss is like Lane Kiffin – – – better at SELLING his skills that proving them, we don’t need a blowhard . . . . with an eating disorder. Find somebody else.

  20. HawaiianBuc Says:

“Fire Lovie, go get Chip. It’s the move the franchise has to make.”

    ———

Why don’t we just go get Vince Lombardi while we’re at it, because there’s probably a greater chance of that happening. What in the hell would lead you to believe a move like this could even be made? I mean, don’t you at least think a teeny tiny bit before you hit Submit comment?

  21. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Well there’s two ways to look at this I guess…glass half full (my preference) is that while honest to God I don’t see it but coaches and players see something in the 2-14 team Lovie put his tiger prints all over and feel that the team is heading in the right direction, OR (glass half empty) OC’s with previous NFL head coach experience see a guy (Lovie) with some talent on the team but on a very hot seat next year, and they figure if they do well the Glazers give them an interim shot at HC after Lovie gets fired. While I’ve been quite vocal in my questioning of Lovie I do truly hope he is on the verge of building a consistent winner and that’s what Weiss and others see…call me blind so far.

  22. Tye Says:

And Chip Kelly was willing to signs a few yeas ago and then he wasn’t…. Talk is cheap…. When someone finally signs up as O C we will see just who and what quality Lovie was able to land…..

  23. kevin Says:

    No thank you.

  24. Zam Says:

Weiss? As local fans and tacos everywhere say, “No please no!”

  26. Another J Says:

We can do better than Charlie Weis.

  27. SAMCRO Says:

Yeah, maybe as an assistant offensive line coach, and as a consultant to the offensive game plan, but in no way should we use his gamebook. It’s to antiquated in todays NFL We need an innovative coach who can recognize defensive counters and adapt on the fly during the course of a game. Something our last couple of OC’s have struggled with.

  28. Matt Says:

Brett Hundley looks like a better NFL QB than Mariota. Hundley has all the tools and great accuracy. Bros, he is the real deal.

  29. Barry Says:

    No? Really? In a heartbeat.

  30. IK Says:

    Joe Dunn I agree
This guy is not the answer
I’d like to an edgier choice not another retread

  31. mark2001 Says:

Good article Joe…and it doesn’t even remotely say one thing about or involve popcorn chomping, butt sniffing, crabs infested, coffee slurping or B B gun shooting characters.

  32. gatrbuc17 Says:

Weiss would be an awesome hire at OC. He just could never cut it as a HC. The guy scored a 1600 on his SAT I believe. If he can just focus on the Offense and nothing else it is at least four times better than what we had this yr.

Someone doesn’t follow the rumour mill very much. Chip won his power struggle in Philly though so sadly it’s moot. Had he lost though, might have gotten interesting.

  34. Ray Rice Says:

Charlie misses the ball park hot dogs!

  35. Arealbucsfan Says:

Im wouldnt be happy with this hire. Yet he’s still better than what we have.

  36. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

And how is HIS health? Do a physical if you are going to interview him.

  37. BirdDoggers Says:

Ther are only 32 O-coordinator jobs in the league. Any out of work coordinator or position coach looking to move up the ranks should be interested in the job.

LOL…That is really funny. I’m sure you are joking but please stop, someone may think you are serious.

  39. Luther Says:

There are only 2 guys that really should be considered and that is Marc Trestman and Rob Chudzinski. All others are distant 3rd or 4th options.

  41. Todd Says:

    Get chip kelly and mariota

  42. Yeah It's me! Says:

All you idiots on here are a joke. You are clueless about football. What are you all gonna bitch about after Lovie turns this team around? Biggest bunch of childish, clueless hateful idiots. Lovie aint going no where for a long time.LOL! Go LOVIE! GO BUCS!!! The rest of you go to ELL! 🙂

  43. Yeah It's me! Says:

I didn’t even want Lovie for a coach but he will turn this team around wither you like him or not. Wither you think he can or not. And when it happens all you doubters should retire from blogging. Haha!

  44. iamkingsu Says:

That shouldve been the move mid-season after Charlie got canned. Say what you want say bout him in the college ranks but the guy is a hell of a offensive coordinator in the pros and can coach the qb position. The only thing about him is that he doesn’t stick around he bolts for the first Head coaching position no matter where it is

  45. cmurda Says:

    HawaiianBuc

He’s speculating that Chip Kelly is going to fight to end his current contract with the Eagles. It’s actually a lot of speculation as we all know these little media tidbits have a way of working themselves out. But, for the fun of it let’s say Chip insists and the Eagles become willing to trade Chip. What would it take for the Bucs to get Kelly? The 1st overall pick at least? The team wuld be so depleted that even Chip wouldn’t want to come here. It’s nonsense. Lovie Smith will be our coach next year at the very least. the trick here is to get an O.C that can actually do something. This would be foreign territory for Lovie but man.. do we need it. I like Trestman or Roman. I’d take either.

  46. iamkingsu Says:

Listen up idiots Charlie got canned at Notre Dame then came back to the NFL for a year and turned Matt Cassel into a pro bowler and got him paid in Kansas City. Then he left and that was the end of Cassel. The guy is a qb Guru!

  47. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

Prediction (more like wishful thinking): Glazers fire Lovie on January 13 and immediately hire Mark Helfrich from Oregon. I think they’ve already told Lovie, which is the real reason the staff turned down the chance to coach Senior Bowl. There must be a reason the Glazers have been stone cold silent since the end of the season. I know they don’t talk much but don’t they usually give an end of season statement of some sort. Hmmmm.

  48. realbucfan Says:

What amazes me is how you dumb a**e* that comment here dog having a guy like Charlie Weis. Hmmmmm he was the offensive coordinator that raised that 6th round draft pick, and called that kids offense for 3 super bowl wins, Tom Brady. It’s so hard to read comments from wannabe know it all, jack wagons, it’s embarrassing to call myself a buc fan with you morons saying you are one.

  49. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Well spoken and totally agreed with”realbucfan”…

  50. MTM Says:

Sorry Charlie is not even remotely capable of running an offense. He has been awful at every stop. The success with the Patriots offense are so long ago at this point. Those were also the spygate years. Keep moving Charlie.

  51. steve Says:

to those who continue to post negative posts about this team and this coach I wish you would please go find another team to root for we do not need your negativity. anyone with the smallest football IQ to see this team is on the verge. not being sarcastic.
