Will Jacqueis Smith Overtake Michael Johnson?

Bucs D-line coach Joe Cullen weighs in

Bucs D-line coach Joe Cullen weighs in. Is Michael Johnson in danger?

So who was that guy not named “Johnson” getting pressure off the right edge Sunday?

It was not overlooked by coaches that little known defensive end Jacqueis Smith had a significant impact.

Assistant coaches don’t speak publicly often, but Bucs defensive line coach Joe Cullen had a chance to express himself last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network on WDAE-AM 620.

Cullen was pumped up by the play of Smith and shared some of his grading.

“Each week we got Jacqueis and each week he’s gotten better, but [Sunday] really, he really let loose,” Cullen said. “That was one of the things we had talked about with him, that maybe he was trying to be a little bit too careful rather than just letting loose and playing, and it showed up [Sunday]. H

“He really showed some good edge rush ability. We credited him with, and the stats did, three quarterback pressures, he had a ball batted down and showed great energy off the edge and we finish a little bit better, some of those things will turn into sacks.”

Perhaps this is why Johnson was a grumpy about his playing time on Sunday?

After being undrafted in 2012 and landing with the Dolphins, Smith, 24, has bounced around the NFL and CFL and landed with the Bucs in September. Smith only has one career tackle, but you may remember his recovery of a Ben Roethlisberger fumble in the Bucs’ lone win this year.

No, Joe doesn’t think the Bucs are giving up on Johnson, but it’s pretty clear his snaps will be cut if he continues to perform like a backup.

Wonderful signing, who could have predicted giving a guy with 26 career sacks $24 million guaranteed would badly backfire?

  3. Another J Says:

Might be time to trade Joe Cullen too…

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I would bench more of these high-priced FAs to have a look at our younger players….and to send a message….”You don’t play well….you don’t play”

We need to see Pamphile & Edwards…..

Lets move Dotson to LT and start Pamphile…..lets use Edwards in a rotation at G.

    Collins needs to be benched….

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

Fine by me. Park his butt on the bench for a little while and let him reassess how he’s approaching things.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

It’s bad when you single out the guy that ALMOST got to the QB

  7. Patrick in VA Says:

@TBBF – good point. At this point in the season, with our record, we need to spend the rest of the season evaluating talent for next year. We’ve got 8 pre-preseason games left on the schedule to figure out who’s playing well. Not concerned about winning so much as figuring out who is playing well within the system. If big money guys aren’t then they need to be parked on the bench to see how the guy behind him does.

  8. bucrightoff Says:

Benching FA’s is Lovie and Licht admitting they are terrible talent evaluators because they signed the FAs. Does anyone think they’ll actually do that?

  9. Patrick in VA Says:

They benched McCown, Cousins and have all but taken Meyers out of the lineup since ASJ is back. They’re willing to do it if the players aren’t performing

  10. RastaMon Says:

Has Lovie been fired yet ?

  11. Joseph Mamma Says:

There is a player, one player mind you, that has as many sacks as our whole sorry defense does.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ RastaMon

Why haven’t you fired him?….you’ve been calling for it for weeks…..so, just do it!

It’s easy….just call him in…tell him he is fired and he and Schiano can vacation together for several years on Buc money….tell him he can check with Chucky to see how its done!!!

  13. bucrightoff Says:

Cousins was never a starter (and made nothing), McCown didn’t technically get benched (and going back to McCown now will shoren Lovie’s lifespan even more), Myers was a small FA signing.

How about benching Michael Johnson, EDS, Anthony Collins? They’ve all been atrocious, but then Lovie and Licht, within 8 games, would be saying the big guys they signed are bad. Not happening.

Is it Sunday yet? Time sure crawls when waiting for the next Bucs win. Too bad they could’nt play twice a week.

  17. NewTampaChris Says:

I’m dreading the WDAE hour today. The host will make it an hour-long referendum on Glennon. Can’t wait for a lengthy discussion on his running out of bounds before the marker. Hopefully, though, we can work Johnny ManZEEL into the conversation.

    As far as that’s concerned.

  18. DB55 Says:

I had to look up who this #56 guy was on Sunday. Pleasantly surprised to see someone rushing the passer. Also saw Larry English get a finger on the qb too.

I wish we could all get together somehow and watch game film. I’d find it interesting to see what you guys see on film vs what I see. Just for fun.

    Same here. Nice effort.

I thought it was less about Kalil and more about Johnson though. Most of the time you don’t even notice when he’s on the field.

I’d start Smith next week. Lovie and Frazier wont.

  24. Nick2 Says:

What I didn’t get was why sign Michael Johnson the year after he has his worst year as a pro????? I really doubt there were teams standing in line behind the Bucs to sign a guy who underperfomed in 2013. Did the front office know something that didn’t show up on the sack totals sheet???? They might have thought so but apparently Michael Johnson is who we thought he was before the beginning of the year. A guy on the downturn at a fairly young age.

  25. DallasBuc Says:

Hey Biff- show a little discretion with the copy/paste. This is ridiculous.

  26. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

I agree that alot of these players should be benched in favor of young backups. Put those rookie lineman in and see what they got.

  27. sho nuff Says:

every FA they picked is a back up….draft well then sit these fakes for kids that aren’t “fat”

  28. BirdDoggers Says:

It’s amazing how many bad free agent signings this team has made the past few years. Lovie appears to be responsible for one of the worst. The organizations inability to draft and develop players has taken it’s toll. And now Lovie’s plan to restock the roster with free agents in order to win now has backfired miserably. This all starts at the top with the Glazers. They can’t seem to figure out how to hire competent football people.

  29. Tony Says:

This team is lost, and organization is incompetent.

  30. bucs4lyfe Says:

ill listen to their nonsense on your site joe but im not letting them pump me up about another single player that’s not starting and playing at a starters level, he’s still coming off the bench and everyone on our team should have been doing that against the Vikings offensive line. everyone on this team has to prove it with production….that was an embarrassingly boring game sunday

  31. Buctebow Says:

So, which Publix was Jacqueis Smith bagging groceries at a month ago?

  32. Greg Says:

Biff Barker, you’re an ass clown with your stupid cut-n-paste!

  33. pick6 Says:

this has been a staple for bucs fans, sadly. seeking a ray of hope from better-than-expected output from guys they pulled off the street or practice squads in-season. all-to-familiar theme in tampa bay as teams in other cities are pondering their postseason chances
