10 Things To Scrutinize

Joe’s Sunday watch list

1) Is There An Edge Rusher In The House? – Former Chargers bust Larry English, cut-Monday-returned-Friday Scott Solomon, recovering Da’Quan Bowers and Will Gholston, both making their season debut, will try to generate a pass rush off the edge against the shaky Rams offensive line tomorrow — while Michael Johnson rests his bum ankle. Good luck, fellas.

2) Solomon Patton – Joe surely expects the Bucs to force plenty of punts with a garbage Rams backup quarterback starting. Patton might look like the undrafted rookie he is, or he could look like the future at the position. Just hold on to the football son.

3) Another beast for Anthony Collins — The Bucs’ new big-bucks left tackle did very well against Greg Hardy last week. Now he gets true monster DE Robert Quinn, who had 19 sacks last season and just inked a $65 million contract extension this week. Joe will be damn impressed if Collins can lock down Quinn.

4) Logan Mankins’ Knee – Mankins was limping around One Buc Palace a bit this week, but the notorious NFL tough guy is ready to play. Joe hopes he’s not rushing back too soon.

5) Vincent Jackson — Captain Jackson had a lousy game last Sunday with two drops, arguably three. He’s making No. 1 receiver money and needs to bounce back.

6) Playcalling — It’s unclear whether Jeff Tedford will have full authority Sunday, or whether he’ll be advising quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo, as was done in the season opener. Regardless, the Bucs were whatever flavor is more vanilla than vanilla against the Panthers. They’ve got to find a way to take some shots — and connecting on them would be nice.

7) The Boos — Joe’s raising many cold beers tonight in hopes of a Bucs victory, and Joe sure hopes the Bucs don’t fall behind early. The boos rained down quickly last Sunday, and one can only imagine the anger in the stands if Shaun Hill starts carving up the Bucs’ defense to give the Rams an early lead. Derrick Brooks’ Ring of Honor day should be free of negativity.

8) Cornerbacks — The Bucs are 1-ply thin at the position.

9) Mike Glennon Mob — Please have a good day, Josh McCown.

10) Lovie Smith/Leslie Frazier — Against Carolina, it was clear that the Bucs’ defensive masterminds decided to stick to their plan of waiting for a four-man pass rush. It never materialized, and there were very few blitzes, stunts or adjustments. With injuries piled up, the Bucs might have to get creative to make the Rams’ backup QB look like a backup.

I’m not Scrutinizing anything. I’m just going to enjoy the team, win or lose. It’s my new outlook on life. A lot less stressful.

  2. d-money Says:

While you’re watching Jackson let’s also watch to see how many times he or Mike Evans are wide open 20 yards down field and the QB never sees him.

  3. d-money Says:

It’s hard to take this list seriously anyway since it mentions nothing about one of the, if not the biggest question mark on the team…You know the Injured starting running back….who will get the most carries? who will be most effective etc?…but hey at least you were able to work in an insult to the back up QB.

  4. Soggy Says:

@d-money, sure looks like to me that the QB saw evans open on that play and would’nt pull the trigger. Hope I see much better tomorrow..

  5. Soggy Says:

I guess it should be “seen evens open” ^ Anyways hope to see josh try to throw a long ball tomorrow..

  6. Buc1987 Says:

#1. Will Lovie Smith have our team more prepared to play than Greg Schiano?

    The jury’s still out.

#2. How badly is the Ram’s QB of the week going to carve up Lovie’s defense?

    As bad as Derek Anderson?

#3. I heard calls for Mikey in the 3rd from the stands in the last game. How long in this one before it starts again?

If McCown plays like McClown (last week) then it will probably be before the 1/2.

#4. “We don’t expect our fans to be patient” should translate into a beat down of a wounded Lamb’s squad, no squeeker of a game. ( I’ll take a win any way though.)

    I expect a squeeker though, don’t you?

#5 Can Lovie and Frazier generate more sacks than Schiano and Sheridan? If not then it’s time to start doing more stunts.

    Whatever it takes!

  7. Hawk Says:

#11. Stocker is going to get more snaps to show he was worth waiting for. Will he show up big?

  8. evo Says:

Damn joe you killed shiano for stunts last year. Now you are asking for them as a form of creating a pass rush? Well which is it?

  9. Oahubuc Says:

VJax is inconsistent, so the odds are improve of his having a great game after last week.

  10. Buccfan37 Says:

An overall better game with better Bucs play is in the cards today. You know it, I know it and the team knows it. Go Bucs!

You have no idea how badly I cringed reading this comment… friggin 108.7 – I have the d@mn number memorized!

    @Harry,

I think my TV is scared of me I yelled at it so much last Sunday. I fear it may call family services for my verbal abuses.

It was a putrid showing on both sides of the ball. If I wasn’t yelling at it for lack of pressure or our D letting their TE make easy catches I had it cringing in fear when I was yelling for Josh to just throw the fricken ball.

I’m hoping it was game on jitters… shrug?

    Go Bucs!

  13. buc4lyfe Says:

Your strange to criticize Vincent Jackson but had nothing to say about the cornerbacks and safties who got roasted by a backups, this is how media drives news you’ve been saying it all week even though offense barely had the ball to get into a rhythm until 4th quarter. Your analysis is lacking, dB’s deserve more scrutiny but when they get roasted this week you’ll wake up

  14. Hawk Says:

    @ buc4lyfe

You are right that the defense didn’t ‘get off the field’, but the lack of possession by the offense, is their own fault. If they had executed their plays, they would have had first downs and thereby more ‘clock time’. Offenses MAKE their own rhythm, it isn’t handed out after so many plays. What they appeared to lack, is confidence. And the more bad plays, the lower the level of confidence.

  15. Joseph Mamma Says:

The offense has to find a way to take some shots. So do the people watching said offense.

  16. abdominal snowman Says:

    @buc4lyfe

Verner was rated the #1 corner in the NFL week 1 by PFF. I agree we got roasted but most of that fell on Mike Jenkins. With Banks in opposite Verner we should see an improvement from our secondary.

In the mean time have fun wishing harm on your team so you can try to sound smart and prove a point.

“…Your strange to criticize Vincent Jackson but had nothing to say about the cornerbacks and safties who got roasted by a backups…”

…and the Des, QB, lack of run blocking, etc… Yeah, it was a total team effort.

  19. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Have we ever won a game when it was a “Player”s Day” ala Warren Sapp, Paul Gruber, other Ring on Honor recipients?

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Scotty…we won on Sapp’s day last season.
