“Short-term” Fitz

September 11th, 2018

Temporary.

You want a stat that will blow your mind?

Well, Steve Beuerlein has one for you. (You’ll have to watch the video below to find out what it is.) The stat demonstrates how Bucs backup quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was on his game. Some would say played out of his arse in the glorious upset win over the Saints to open the season.

In a segment on “Monday Quarterback,” seen Mondays on CBS Sports Network, Beuerlein, a former journeyman NFL QB, cautioned not to get too geeked over Fitz after his game for the ages. Of course, Fitz’s performance has the foes of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, whipped into a frenzy that Fitz should be anointed as the Bucs’ permanent starting quarterback for the 2018 season and beyond.

Careful what you wish for, Beuerlein cautions.

careful what you wish for indeed…..

  2. uckinator Says:

What else it shows is that defensive coordinators are going to have to focus on pass defense. Hopefully that will open up the run game and also make it easier on our OL.

  5. Micheal Savoie Says:

The Jameis haters will only look at the good Fitz. You cannot expect the good Fitz to show up for more than 3 or 4 games, tops.

Some folks on Facebook want us to trade Winston to Buffalo, but are we ready to annoint Ryan Griffen the starting QB if Fitz goes down or turns into Fitztragic?

    America’s Real Quarterback?

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Fitz arguably had the best game of his NFl career this past Sunday. The Eagles will study him though. They will be prepared for that..lateral movement he now displays. He won’t have the same game come Sunday. Therefore..Our DEFENSE must be ready. They are starting out again as one of the NFl worst ranking Defenses with 40 scored against them opening week. We can whoop and yell all we want about the Offense, But this Defense under DC Pressbox Smitty must improve…Immediately!

  8. miken Says:

@michaelsavoie… everyone knows fitz is a back up and are just enjoying the ride. Now we do question why jameis cant be as accurate as fitz but we all know fitz is not a long term solution

  9. Tony LA Says:

It’s okay that Fitz played great.
That has nothing to do with Winston and his worth.
Only short sighted people think this way.

You want your backup to be successful AND you want your starter to be great. I’m completely blown away by the narrow minded group that sees it as an either/or situation.

    What is Buffalo offering….

  11. Old timeer Says:

Fitz is a jouneyman qb hopefully he can continue to play well. He been erratic his entire career just ask the Bills and Jets fan. He has two very elite defense’s coming up and if he plays the 4th game another tough pass rushing defense in the Bears. All 3 teams will pressure him with a relentless pass rush. Hopefully the oline can keep him upright most of the time. He had a clean pocket the entire game Sunday. I don’t think that will be the case the next 3 weeks. Hopefully im wrong. Go Fritz Go Bucs.

  12. mark2001 Says:

Stinky Pete’s much taller and much better conditioned little brother kicked Saint rear end. Let’s see what he can do the next couple of weeks.

  13. unbelievable Says:

Damn those stats on passes to Evans and Jackson are crazy!

  14. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Old Timeer what are you talking about Fitz and the 4th game. Jameis is only suspended 3 games.

  15. Chris in WA Says:

Sorry but Fitzpatrick is America’s Quarterback.

I like Winston but Fitzpatrick is much more deserving of the label at the current moment.

  16. Gambelero Says:

Carr, Prescott, Mariota all had terrible games. None of them throwing anything but screens, slants and dumpoffs with any accuracy. Stanford, Rivers look like they’re off to yet another in a string of losing seasons. Top shelf QB play still at a premium in this league. Not counting the honeymooners who are just beginning careers as starters, who can reach the Rodgers, Ryan, Brees, Brady level? Wentz maybe? Goff, not likely. Maybe one of Luck, Carr, Prescott, Mariota will turn it around.

    Only Winston is “probable.”

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

Long term…Jameis needs to learn from how Fritz sees and reacts to the game….Jameis needs to let go of the personal hero, look at me I’m Jameis way of playing the game…..ya know… like all the historical great NFL QB’s….

  18. Old timee Says:

TD Tampa if Fritz wins one of the 2 games and has a good game in the other i believe the Bucs will give him the 4th game just a hunch. But Winston is still the future for the Bucs. I just cant see Fritz having success agaist the Pilly or Pitts defense. Our def has to play lights out to give us a chanch. Our offensive line gave him all the time in the world in the
pocket wont be the same the next 2 weeks. Fritz looks bad Winston definitely will start.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Beuerlein, a former journeyman NFL QB, cautioned not to get too geeked over Fitz after his game for the ages. Of course, Fitz’s performance has the foes of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, whipped into a frenzy that Fitz should be anointed as the Bucs’ permanent starting quarterback for the 2018 season and beyond.”

So now it starts: downplay Fitz’s accomplishment yesterday to protect Jameis against the barbarian hordes pounding on the gates of RayJay. Got news Joe … I seriously doubt that anyone watching that game yesterday was thinking “Oh boy, I can’t wait until Jameis gets back; then we’ll REALLY pile up the points.” Jameis was the last person on any Bucs fan’s mind yesterday.

Beuerlein’s take is BS. I for one fully expect the Bucs’ offense led by Fitz to do just as well this coming Sunday for one reason: TEAM effort. Everyone … Fitz, RBs, WRs, TEs, OLine … pulled their weight Sunday. Fitz’s passing & running was outstanding, but his field generalship was what made all the difference IMO. You could see the confidence guys had in him to get the job done … the old blue-collar, nose-to-the-grindstone, smash-mouth football type of confidence. I also fully expect BTW that this defense will do better this coming Sunday. I’ll stick with my projection from last week: 28-24 Bucs win.

Micheal Savoie says the good FITZ can only be expected to show up 3 or 4 games. How many games can we expect Winston to show up for?

  21. tickrdr Says:

Before everyone gets too excited about the unbelievably outstanding performance
by Ryan Fitzpatrick, did anyone else notice how many times he stared down his receiver, and then threw into double or triple coverage???

    Yeah, ………………… me neither.

2017 Bucs’ offense ~ 8 ppg in the first half of games.
    JW3 led Bucs’ offense < 19 ppg during 2017.
    Rookie MG8 Bucs' offense in 2013 ~ 19.5 ppg???
Could it be that opposing defenses played "prevent" style defenses most of the time, knowing and just waiting for a fumble, stupid penalty, or interception to end the drive?

  22. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @tickdr

That’s some good snark. Well played.

I’m not sure why Jameis fans are gripping. JW WILL be playing regardless of how well Fitz plays…even if he shocks us and plays anywhere near his Fitzmagic game of New Orleans….Jameis WILL BE BACK.

This is the NFL…a business first and athletic competition second. The keys to the Glazer kingdom are invested in JW not Fitz. We simply MUST play JW to confirm what we all believe will be #3’s finest season.

Even if the unlikely happens and JW comes back and loses….Fitz will not be viewed as the long term solution….this is JW’s team until it’s not.

Do not whine about unfairness to Fitz. He’s having the time of his life with very little pressure compared to what JW will be under. If he puts in a couple more good games he’ll be golden next year. Three years after he thought about retiring he’ll be making millions and millions. Good for him. Who doesn’t like Fitz?

One last time…stop gripping and defending your guy…Jameis is still the franchise QB.

  23. GhostofSchiano Says:

I just want to say one thing.

On Fitz rushing Touchdown, seeing him lower his pads, make contact with the defender, that look in his eyes told me all I need to know. Fitz was not going to be denied. That was just as impressive as his multiple long balls. That was a man who is here for more than just a paycheck. That was passion.

  24. Billy_43 Says:

I’m a huge Jameis supporter because he is the closest thing we have to being good now.

I do admit that seeing Fitz with that attitude pumped me up and I hope he continues to play well, OBVIOUSLY.

But the way Jameis looked in preseason, HAHAHAHAHAHA

He is gonna light it up FOR SURE. Get him on your fantasy team. 30TD 5INT

  25. Trench War Says:

Plain and simple, when Winston returns he needs to win games. If he continues to turn the ball over while putting unnecessary burdens on his inexperienced defense and we lose as a result, then who knows how the next regime will react to Jameis. Remember, according to all the experts, if Koetter has a losing record, he’s gone.

  26. Bob in Valrico Says:

Jameis can learn from the way Fitz played. Fitz was leading his receivers on his passes. His ball placement was very good and when he threw deep it was into single coverage. The percentages are much better when you are not trying
to thread the ball between two defenders.

  27. Bob in Valrico Says:

That back shoulder throw to Godwin was a thing of beauty as was his catch.
IMO the players the responded to the opportunities they were given to make big plays and many had YAC yarrds because they were so open.

  28. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Watching the Bucs Offense week 1 gave me the feeling that other teams fans must have when they play against us!

  29. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Ghostofschiano, Fitz knows that these might be the last 3 starts of his career and he’s playing like it! Make the most of it, Fitzy…Beat the Eagles!

  30. DB55 Says:

    Tickdr

    Lmao, cold blooded!!! Lmao!

I got to admit Fitz moved the safeties like a 13 year pro. The bomb to djax was set up by looking at ME. Thing of beauty and the deep passes we’re perfect.

  31. DislocatedBucsFan Says:

If the Bucs go even 2-1 in the stretch with a good game out of Fitz in the loss no way does he come out. Jameis has not done enough over the few year stretch to warrant automatic starting status. He has momentary flashes of greatness while squandering many more attempts. This is the same receiving group JW had all last year and his deep ball attempts were awful. Most that were completed were 50/50’s to ME.

  32. Godeep66 Says:

@stpetefan: you are dillusional. JW is as good as gone. You have got to start using the head on your shoulders and not the one below your belt, when gleaming over JW. Let’s say you owned the Bucs and had to write the check…. would you sign him to a 14-18 million dollar a year guaranteed contract KNOWING he is one transgression away from getting banned from the league for life???? If you answer yes you are most certainly an idiot.

  33. Godeep66 Says:

And that goes for all you JW lovers.

  34. SB Says:

Man JOE you are Really putting a spin on that one. I Never heard him say be cautious.

  35. stpetebucsfan Says:

    GoDeep

LMAO…classifying me as a Jameis lover when the other half of the board think I’m a Jameis hater.

I’m neither. I respect his ability and believe if he gets his head together as he appeared to have done in the preseason…he’s going to be a very effective perhaps great QB for us. That’s his on field ability which is loaded with upside.

As for his off field stuff…I was as harsh for his betrayal in hanging out at 3AM with two losers..blackout drunk. But it’s happened and he’s serving his suspension..it’s time to move on.

As for risking millions…very, very doubtful…thanks to his incident neither Jameis or his agent will be in the driver’s seat for the next contract. It’s actually very simple…the contract will have a clause that voids it if JW gets in ANY kind of off field problems in the future. Another suspension would void his next contract.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

DislocatedBucsFan….your post shows just how dislocated you are….
