Corner Turned?

November 1st, 2017

Bouncing back?

Joe is still trying to get the taste out of his mouth from gargling with Drano after watching that complete and total shat show performed by the Bucs offense Sunday.

Lost in the total freakout of the offense was that the defense came to play when virtually every Bucs follower expected doom.

When Brent Grimes and Robert McClain were declared out, Joe wanted to run and hide. But the defense played well, tremendous if you factor in how allergic this defensive unit is to quarterbacks.

The neat thing was the improved play of Vernon Hargreaves after a terrible start to his sophomore season. It was so bad many fans wanted him run out of town.

The last two weeks, however, Hargreaves has played solid ball. Per the well-trained orangutans with the PFF tribe, Hargreaves has just about played at a lockdown rate. Again, per the tribe, receivers Hargreaves covered were targeted 11 times in the past two games. Only two of those passes were completed.

Put as much stock into that as you wish, but just eyeballing the game, Joe was very happy with how Hargreaves played.

Maybe the Bucs won’t need to draft Denzel Ward afterall?

Great. No we can just focus on the 5 new D-linemen we need next draft. Yippe…….

  2. Season Is Over Says:

One pick in 23 games is not very good for a top 15 overall. That was a tipped ball that anyone could have gotten if I remember correctly. At least he makes plays in preseason. He needs to an actual factor in helping the team at his draft position. He sure seems like an average NFL corner at this point.

  3. Brian D. Says:

Gotta love how you consistently kick dirt on the credibility of PFF…and then cite their stats regularly.

  4. Brian D. Says:

Can we talk about how “Per the Tribe” Jameis Winston has the best passer rating outside the pocket in the NFL, but doesn’t attempt nearly enough passes outside the pocket because this franchise seemingly is trying to turn him into Peyton Manning.

  5. Broy34WantsGruden Says:

Tried telling everyone. He’s a bright spot to the last couple weeks. The kid has been pressing his man and has been fantastic. The negative Nellie’s cannot twist it. It is a fact

Corners take time to develop, Hargreaves started slow last year, and to be fair, Grimes hadn’t looked much better when he’s played this year. I wouldn’t be opposed to taking another corner high, but the pass rush needs to be addressed. Unless this team goes on a run like last year, we’re looking at a top 15 pick. If there’s a game changing left tackle I’d be fine with that as well, but our pass rush is holding this team back more than any play call, overthrown, pass, or injuries.

On a side note, I hate the Saints more than any other rival. Everyone is hot on them right now and if our Bucs can spoil Brees that make me so damn happy.

So all of you calling for Gruden or fire Koetter and Licht this week I’d happily Point you to some Saints blogs to join up, since when Aints inevitably collapse back to the 7-9 team they are, they’ll be looking for a new head coach and they’ll be calling Jon Gruden.

And when he accepts the gig, you fanboys can go hop onto that Aints train.

This week, nothing but positivity. Siege the Superdome.

Also, look at the Saints schedule. They’ve beaten a bunch of nobodies, and lost to the only two good teams they’ve played. GMC plays Brees tough because Brees steps up in the pocket a lot. I’m just saying, this game is winnable.

    Siege the Superdome.

  8. Warrenfb12 Says:

Ya im not buying it. He’s had a few inaccurate balls thrown his way the past few weeks. Drew Brees will roast him.

  9. Buccanr1 Says:

Really Western Buc? Grimes hasn’t played well?

  10. MadMax Says:

    I still want D Ward! Maybe a late 1st, early 2nd.

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

@Warren- I’m with you. He’s played OK. Many of those targets were overthrown or underthrown balls, despite his finger-waving.
I hope he continues to improve. We need him.

    This is for ATrain:
Hey Joe, how come you don’t call out your mancrush GMC?! He’s done nothing except eat ice cream cones for the last 2 weeks!!! He’s been invisible yet you call out VHIII? Where’s softie?!

I hope that covers it. Go Bucs! LOL!

  12. Conte Piscateli Says:

While I think he has played better the last two games, let’s face it the past two opponents haven’t really had good passers or good receivers. I will reserve my judgment for this Sunday. If he looks good against the Saintsi will say corner turned.

  13. Jersey Buc Says:

Two solid games against two of the worst passing attacks, schematically, in the NFL. At their current pace, this team will fall just shy of breaking the record for recording the fewest sacks in a season. No pass rush…no chance of winning. When you don’t get a hand on the QB, you’re basically playing defense with only seven guys. The only reason you’d hang around in any game, would be that the opposing offense is equally as bad as your defense. They better load up in the draft for pass rushers and corners, or we’ll be having this same discussion for the 13th year in a row…next October.

  14. passthebuc Says:

next year, trade your #1 overall and revamp the D-line with the extra picks.

  15. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

He has played well against garbage passing schemes now its a lil different hope he does it this week

  16. 813bucboi Says:

if it wasn’t for “coach my scheme smitty” VHG and ryan smith would be further along in their development….I’ve been saying this since last year….those 2 cbs are man press cbs….let them play at the LOS and tell smitty to stop putting payers in position to fail….

it only took smitty all of last year and 6games this year to figure it out….#incompetent….GO BUCS!!!!

  17. BigHogHaynes Says:

Receivers with speed are the ones that give VH trouble, in my opinion “in the slot” is where he will earn his coins in this league !!

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Few to no sacks plus few Qb hurries, plus few picks, plus..plus..equals 2-5. Our Bucs have left 2 easily winnable games, possibly 3 on the field due to this Defense. Its not going to get any better this season. Sure, there will be flashes here and there and even maybe 3 or 4 more victories. I say bring in new coaches. What..can it hurt? Hell, we already hurting!!

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Keep heading in the right direction Vernon. Nose to the grindstone.

If you have been doing something different the last 2 weeks – keep doing it.

  20. unbelievable Says:

PFF is garbage, unless it supports an opinion… duh.
