What’s Up With Simeon Rice?

October 25th, 2017

Tells Bucs he’s ready.

Either Simeon Rice is bored or he would love just one more chance to snap on a chin strap and bury a quarterback.

For six figures, of course.

A day after he announced on Twitter that he was selling clothes out of his closet, Rice, who made a trip from California to One Buc Palace this summer to work with Bucs defensive ends (specifically Noah Spence), made a public plea to the Bucs to sign him.

Rice, like everyone else who can see, notices how putrid the Bucs’ edge rush is (what edge rush?),  as the Bucs are a groin-kick dead last in the NFL in sacks with seven in six games.

The Bucs have yet to have an edge rusher with double-digit sacks since he had 14 in 2005.

Rice believes he can turn the fortunes of the Bucs around and lead them to the playoffs.

@simeon_rice: Believe it or not I can get them to the playoffs #TrainedAndReady … If they call me I will comeback this year and show them how to get it done #stopplayingandcalltheunstoppableSimeonRice

Rice is 43 and hasn’t taken a snap in 10 years. He looks to be in fantastic shape, though, per the video and his One Buc Palace appearance this summer. Joe remembers talking to Will Gholston while Rice was coaching Spence. Gholston was remarking that they’re the same body type and Rice nearly looks in game shape.

Yeah, it’s a stretch to believe the Bucs would seriously think of bringing Rice back. Does Joe believe Rice could be just as bad/good as the 53-year old former All Star first baseman now on the roster? Sure. But the Bucs are so horrid with an edge rush (what edge rush?) it would be so downright embarrassing for Bucs officials to bring in a guy who hasn’t played in a decade, Team Glazer might order drug tests.

Would it be a cool move, even a stunt? Sure. Will it happen? Well, if you believe that, Joe also has swampland in Arizona to peddle to you at a decent rate.

On a related note yesterday, Rich Eisen of NFL Network, who hosts the weekday national radio show “The Rich Eisen Show,” claimed one of his guests, DeMarcus Ware, received a text message from an NFL general manager 15 minutes before his appearance on Eisen’s show. The text was begging Ware to sign with the general manager’s team.

Joe can only hope the general manager was Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.

Trust and believe if we was to sign rice I believe he can do equal to better than what’s on the roster. However I also believe in Father Time so we would have to watch his snaps for certain. I also believe we have the worst pass rush in the NFL so if it wasn’t Jason texting ware I would be worried

Simeon was cut 10 years ago and said he was going to show the world he was still the man. He crushed Gruden on the way out the door because he was cut. He went on to the colts and broncos and got ONE Whole sack over two years. THen he went on to something called the new york sentinals and recorded a handful of tackles. Always bothered me he bashed the bucs staff when he was odviously washed up.

Like me and Rachel Watson. Old men and their daydreams!

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

We would be the laughingstock of the league once again. roberto the kicker then a 43 y/o who hasn’t played in 10 years. lol

  5. mike n Says:

@Bayers.. he could preform a decade ago. Silly people are taking this seriously.

  6. Clodhopper Says:

Saw this little doodad on Blackish last night. Reminded me of Joe and his Demarcus Ware idea.

  7. BucFanFromOH Says:

Psh why not at least bring him in? I mean seriously we are already last in sacks and have the worst D in the league. It’s not like he could make us worse? Hell maybe he’ll even teach our DE’s a thing or 2 because clearly Jay Hayes isn’t teaching them squat.

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

………while we’re at it….why don’t we just bring back the whole defense from 1997????

I’m sure Hardy Nickerson is good for “push outta bounds” play

  9. RachelWatson'sThong Says:

If only it were plausible. Loved Sim buy that ship has long since set sail. He should be in the Hall!

  10. TheBucsAnthem Says:

….man, now miss those days when tampa was all about DEFENSE and they just made plays all day long…game after game after game………we were spoiled bucs fans back then! 🙂

  11. BucFanFromOH Says:

I’ll take aging Rice, Barber, and even Lynch over VHIII, Ayers, and Conte all day! Actually, I’d take old men Barber and Lynch BOTH over Conte lmao.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

Funny he would be our best de

  13. Bucs Nihilist Says:

  14. Bucs Fan #7423 Says:

Rice was only good because Sapp was the best ever

  15. Bayers Says:

@mike n well it’s just hope in wishing I just want my bucs yo do great if we was jameis would be getting national attention as top ten qb

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

Ya know what else is embarrassing? Having guys that are in the primes of their careers who are being as productive as Simeon is from his couch. At least he has a proven track record of productivity. I say let him come do the Tuesday tryout and give him a workout to see if he can perform. What’s the worst that can happen? We sign him and he stinks and we end up with the worst ranked pass rush in the NFL?……

How old are you? 15? You obviously don’t remember that he played at a high level before and after Sapp.

  18. darin Says:

As silly as this sounds he would improve the pass rush. Im not advocating it but im almost sure if he signed now he would lead the team in sacks at years end. On a more suitable note I finally read a quote where dirk said it would help to blitz the linebackers more. Not sure what took so long. Better late than never. Lets hope this week cam doesnt go off for 30 a week after 3.

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    DITTO!!!!

He was wrecking shop in Arizona before Sapp and he was considered the best DE in the league at that time…..the equivalent of signing TJ WATT in comparison for today’s DEs.

  20. BROCKTACULAR Says:

Couldn’t do any worse than we are now!!!

  21. BigHogHaynes Says:

    S Rice ….please take a knee!

  22. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Or licht could have signed Dwight Freeney who has some left in the tank and was just signed by a REAL organization

  23. mdsbuc Says:

I’m looking at the calendar and it seems we passed April 1st quite a while back. Let’s get real…

  24. Red86 Says:

Well there goes our d line coach.

  25. LakeLand Says:

He can’t do any worse than the $27,500,000 man, William “No Sack” Gholston.

  26. Phil Says:

    I’m willing to try anything.

  27. Skoorb43 Says:

Sign him. Can’t get any worse

  28. DallasBuc Says:

Four offseasons and we have nothing in the way of a pass rush to speak of. Jason Licht has got to go. Fanboys want so bad to think he is good but day by day the reality is setting in.

  29. Q Says:

I truly believe he can dominate….theres no one on this team who can get to the qb …a 43 year old rice would get 10 sacks before the season ends

  30. JimmyJack Says:

this is just comical. Sillier then the story is the comments of many fans buying it. Maybe I’m the naive one but pretty sure he’s just getting his name out there and going for some spotlight. Long retired players do this stuff all the time.

  31. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Winners mentality. Couldnt hurt to have that on defense even if he cant outproduce the current garbage we have

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    im for it…sign him…GO BUCS!!!

  33. Jooehelldeloxley Says:

there is a tradition in rugby : for international test match and very important games, the jerseay are given to the players by a former player, usually a former captain, a former star, …

Is there the same tradition in NFL ? If not, then the Bucs should do create it !
Because I think some players should benefit having their herseys given to them by Derrick brooks, Warren Sapp and so on.

Imagine Sapp giving his jersey to GMC and pumping him up before game, wouldn’t that be great ?

  34. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DallasBuc Says
“Four offseasons and we have nothing in the way of a pass rush to speak of. Jason Licht has got to go.”

I respectfully disagree. Licht was hired with a mandate…get us a franchise QB and build an offense around him. He has since built the best offense this team has ever had.

It’s easy to look at the defense and say that he’s done badly, but that’s discounting that the defense was not his focus. Offense was. And in that regard he has been very successful.

All this pressure means he finally has to turn his attentions to the defense, so its a good thing. He’s already got some pieces in place…he just needs to fix the Defensive Line and build the secondary to last.

  35. Cannon Says:

He would be an upgrade over our current lineup.

    You know its true.

  36. TampaTown Says:

I bet he’s got something left in the tank. The Bucs need to sign him to whip the youngsters into shape and to show them how an OG does it. And if for no other reason, to restore the hopes and dreams of 40 something men everywhere.

  37. BUC IT Says:

Its pretty simple… Leave no stone unturned. Let him practice with the Bucs. If he can contribute… he can contribute.
