Soon: Another NFL Record

October 25th, 2017

Record-setter.

In the 97 years the NFL has existed, only one quarterback has thrown for 4,000 yards in each of his first two seasons.

That would be America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

And another record is about to be captured by America.

Per the Elias Sports Bureau, only one quarterback has thrown for more touchdown passes before he turned 24 than Jameis has. And that was the great Dan Marino.

Marino threw for 68 touchdowns before he turned 24. Jameis is tied with Matthew Stafford at 60.

Given the fact Jameis doesn’t turn 24 until just after the regular season ends, provided he doesn’t get hurt (again), Jameis very easily could own this record before Thanksgiving.

But, yeah, there is a vocal albeit mentally handicapped segment of Bucs fans who would rather see Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback than Jameis. Why? Because Jameis and DeSean Jackson cannot connect on a bomb.

Joe thinks he needs a drink.

Currently the 6th best QB according to Football Outsiders.

  2. TheBucsAnthem Says:

You know……you can make a stat outta anything these days….. 🤢

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

apples and oranges…to be honest…same game different rules
That said Jameis is on the right track…

  4. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

I’m with ya, Joe. It’s 9:30AM and I’ll drink to that. Fans who always want more…and forget what we had for the last 10 years. The guy struts up to the center and I get pumped on EVERY snap when he does the play action…when was the last time we all had that feeling from a Buc QB?

Offense isn’t the issue as we know. It’s squarely on the D side to turn this season around. Perhaps Koetter throwing out that he is never in the D room, but the quarterback room is a message to Team Glazer that if they have any 3AM epiphanies, to look Smitty’s way!

What’s good fam? Another glorious day in Tampa Bay.

My only question is when will the fans at the stadium begin the FSU war chant? Remember KC last yr? Ijs lol 😂

  6. IAN B Says:

Joe whatever you you’re having, save me a seat, Im buying

Jameis is the last thing this team needs to worry about, people have short memories, year 3 of Josh Freeman we started to see the implosion, year 3 of Jameis he is getting better, continues to work hard and is the clear cut leader of this team.

Be thankful, there are probably 20+ teams that wish they have a QB like Jameis Winston on their roster

  7. Tampa Bay Tailgater Says:

Couldn’t be anymore truth to that Ian.

    Remember that defense too????????????

……..now that defense has went AWOL this year 🙁

  9. Mike in LOL Says:

In Jameis We Trust! He always electrifies any setting he finds himself in. Of course he isn’t perfect but I’m perfectly happy with his production and learning curve thus far.

  10. martinii Says:

Love to see Jameis break records. It is the only positive thing to look forward too in recent years .Unfortunatley because he is so young and productive one wishes he could be playing for a decent team. So many of those TD’s and yards came from playing from behind and ultimately losing the game (Stafford same boat). Good for Jameis resume, sort of reminds you of Barry Sanders. Good player, bad team.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

    Jw for president

  12. martinii Says:

Once again, with all respect intended is there anyway after nearly a year that my comments not be moderated?

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

Nice stats. I’d be willing to bet that Jameis AND Marino would trade those for rings though.

  14. Will-In-The-Midwest Says:

Yeah it is truly unfortunate that people don’t see the talent that he has. Is he perfect? No! But he is definitely better than any other QB this franchise has ever had. (Lets not bring up Steve Young or Doug Williams please) In addition, for the crowd who continues to say “I knew we should have took Marcus Mariota” I implore you to go check out his numbers this year so far. Football is a team game and this team needs to fire together on all cylinders if we are going to win!

  15. Redtop5588 Says:

Love our QB Winston best we ever had

  16. mike10 Says:

I LOVE this!!!! I love it!!

I will say, he does need to work on his accuracy. Rewatching Sunday’s game, the reason Winston didn’t have 3 picks is because corner backs are cornerbacks, and not WRs. And no Joe, it wasn’t just on deep balls to Djax; Evans was very confident one of those was picked.

Looks like he’s throwing from his back foot and airing the ball just a bit too much… hopefully that’s something that will develop over his career…. as our franchise QB (yay!)

    ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Poor poor dan marino………….that man could sling it! one of the greatest QBs…..and he should have a ring.

I remember many years ago he asked on a morning pregame show about all of his stats, awards, and accolades, and he said he would trade it all for a one superbowl championship…….

  18. ruggyup Says:

Records meant to be broken are fun to talk about. Now can we turn to wins and losses and progression up the playoffs spot?

  19. LakeLand Says:

Records, records, records? 11-11 is the only record that counts!

  20. SB Says:

I am with Pickgrin……….Trade Baker and Ward plus a conditional draft pick to bring Michael Bennett back to Tampa

  21. Cometowin2 Says:

What is the record for touchdowns for the first three years? This would be more meaningful if he breaks that record Jameis came out after his sophmore season. That gives him a big advantage. Having said that, I’m more than happy with his progression.

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

Records galore..Hooray for King Jameis!! All hail the passing wonder. Now ask yourself..Are our Bucs Winning ?I’d rather have a slightly above average Qb or Average..and WIN than Lose. Nothing matters but Winning. Nothing at all. Tell yourself this when Carolina is marching down the field come Sunday.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Moving forward…..our offense is solid…..we could actually spend all of our 8 draft picks on defense….perhaps DE, CB, DE, CB, DT with the first 5…..that with at least one high-priced DE in FA and I think we are good to go as long as Grimes stays.

We are strong at LB and relatively strong at Safety….our special teams look set.

I know it hurts but we are still another year away from success….

As far as Mike Smith….he needs to show some major improvements the rest of this year.

  24. Eric Says:

I got sun glases on the future is so bright.

C’mon Dirk, pull this group together.

You will never get this chance again.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Football is a T-E-A-M sport. Individual records are nice, but the T-E-A-M won-loss record, playoff victories and Super Bowl championships are FAR more important. Jameis gets that far better than most media & fans. And oh ya, he’s making great progress towards being the driving factor in making that happen … but this is all still a WORK IN PROGRESS. All of us (and especially me) need to be a lot more patient.

  26. LakeLand Says:

I have experienced this for 9 years here in Atlanta with Matt Ryan…records, records, records. Matty Ice has thrown for over 4000 yards 6 straight seasons. Has thrown for 39,291 in 9 seasons, and there’s still not a Lombardi Trophy at the Mercedes-Benz stadium. It makes you wonder.

  27. Fartman Says:

I like Jameis, I’m on board… I don’t think he’s the issue. but we need more TDs

  28. '74 Bucs Fan Says:

DB55 – I’m all for the FSU war chant! BUT… will the D just keep crapping the bed? Jameis is doing his job. But I’m with ya!

  29. Pickgrin Says:

    SB – ???

I wrote on a thread yesterday trade 2 malcontents (Ward and Baker) + 3rd rd pick for Seattle’s alleged malcontent CB Richard Sherman.

Bennett could help for sure and like Joe – I cringe at the thought that we developed this guy into a very good player and just let him walk. (Thanks Dom!)

I’m pretty sure replacing Hargreaves with a stud CB like Sherman would have more impact than bringing in Michael Bennett though honestly. Bennett is very good but he’s not great.

Yes our Dline needs more pressure. That’s more than obvious – but backfield flubs, miscommunication between Safeties and CBs – and sheer lack of capability to get the job done by Hargreaves have been our defense’s most glaring and damaging weakness thus far.

Have no idea what has happened to Vernon but he’s been in an Aguayo like head funk so far this year. Played better vs the Bills in nickle role than in previous weeks on the outside – so maybe there’s hope for VH3 – but that’s not a good look for a #11 overall pick to play so much worse in his 2nd year and get demoted like that after starting from day 1 at outside corner.

Sherman would solve a # of problems. That would give us 2 lock down corners who could play man the majority of the time – thus freeing up resources to blitz from different spots and create more pressure with LBers and Safeties since the Dline isn’t getting it with 4 rushers.

  30. mark2001 Says:

You might want to consider that these records must be looked at in light of the way the game is played…and Ref’ed. WR’s used to be mugged all over the field… now after 5 years, they can barely be touched until they catch the ball. QB’s were also mugged during the age of slacker rules. If Jameis’s accuracy can become more consistent, there is no reason he can’t be our franchise QB for many years to come. But the game has changed…as has baseball. It is hard to compare strikeouts and such when the mound was higher before the ’70’s, batters box rules and the balls were different. Not saying the same player wouldn’t be great in either era. But it is different.

  31. JimmyJack Says:

These records mean little. The passing game is so much different in the current NFL then it was pre-millennial it’s a sewed record.

Just give it time and you will see Winsyons name burried in the book with this record. If he wants to separate himself it will be about what he does with his future.

  32. Wausa Says:

Jameis will become the top QB in the NFL.

  33. Lamarcus Says:

    Jw is a top qb.

“Jw has to more accurate” – fuc outta here.

Gmc lead defenses been getting their asses handed to them for 7 years and getting worse by the year- fact

  34. mark2001 Says:

Lemarcus…JW is in the top forth or top third. And GMC is in the top 5% of DT’s. So your point is?

And yes…JW does need to be more consistently accurate.

That being said, I wouldn’t want to be without either one.

  35. mark2001 Says:

Just to clarify, Jameis is in the Top forth (25%) or top third(33%) among QB’s.

  36. Erik w/ Clean Athletics 'The Kwon Alexander of Bucs fans' Says:

Jameis will set so many NFL records by the time he retires…. Only player to throw for 4k his 1st 2 seasons? Ha, more like his 1st 10-15 seasons, with a few 5k passing seasons sprinkled in the mix (which means Jameis is a surefire HOF’er, btw)…

Anyway, he just needs to become more consistently accurate, like he is when he’s ‘feeling it’ and then our guys need to hang on to the ball and we’ll be good to go (even with an avg to semi-weak defense). And then once the D gets up to Buccaneer Standards, we will become truly dominate and start winning multiple Superbowls (which is the record I hope Jameis ends up breaking the most… Tom Brady’s Superbowl Victory Record Lol)

  37. Lamarcus Says:

Top 5 percent of losing. Gmc track speak for itself. If we hold 23 yr old accoutable for trying to change a losing culture. U don’t watch the bucs nor follow the bucs

  38. mark2001 Says:

Lemarcus…. So do you want to look at the total W/L record under Jameis? Did think so. It is a losing record. The fact is that everyone that knows anything about the NFL professionally knows GMC is a high tier player at his position. And most everyone thinks Jameis is a talented young QB, who may very well be our franchise QB for the next decade. I believe they are correct.

  39. gilhealy Says:

That’s good, but…., It’s a different game now…., But look at our record…., apples to oranges…, what a bunch of sad sacks. How about ” great job, young man. Keep it up.” That should suffice.

  40. Jeagan1999 Says:

I think Jameis has grown by leaps and bounds over his first couple of years and I am excited to see where he goes from here! If we could just get a little bit of a pass rush going on defense, we could still be a playoff contender this season!

  41. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

After the Buffalo game we can now say we have a legit elite franchise QB. I know were all bummed bout the loss but this is a major win for the bucs in the long run.

Now Koetter needs to up his game in the play calling department or give it to someone else and they’ll be a absolutely force.

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

The “spin everything into a conversation about GMC” thing is getting real tired. Can we try, at least, to keep it on topic?! You know who you are!

  43. BUCLUV55 Says:

    Markasstrick2001
Do you want to look at the w/l for gmc’s career? Guess what? It’s a losing record by a long shot. JW’s .500 is hall of fame level compared to GMC, if that’s the metric you want to measure by. GMC is a good player, but not worth top dollar for his position. Impact plays are not there. There isn’t to far to fall from 31 out of 32 on D, how is he making us better?

  44. LakeLand Says:

Brad Johnson throw for 3049 yards and win a Super Bowl. Trent Dilfer throws for 1502 yards and win a Super Bowl. Russell Wilson throws for 3357 yards and win a Super Bowl. Drew Brees throw for 5208 yards and win 7 games. Hello Buc fans, this is not Tennis or Golf. It takes a TEAM to win in the NFL. You can take INDIVIDUAL stats, and throw them in the trash where they belongs! The Bucs has slowly evolved into the New Orleans Saints. And Dirk Koetter is a Carbon Copy of Sean Payton.

  45. jim burns Says:

Once the Bucs get behind , the defense plays back and gives you yards and a touchdown or two .They know that time is on their side . If he threw for a lot of yards in the first half with a few touchdowns it would mean something . The stats are highly misleading . Another point …when the Patriots were 2-2 the fans wanted Brady out of the game . We are 2-4 and we defend our quarterback . Different expectations .

  46. Brandon Says:

He’s got great QB numbers but he has been far from a great QB this season.

  47. mark2001 Says:

Lame BucsAsshole…. I’m just pointing out how stupid it is to compare W/L record of one player, even a QB, to the value of a player overall. So Now Paul Gruber was a lousy player in your mind? Doug Williams? Hardy Nickerson? Tons of L’s on our record when these guys were here. You know nothing about football….just admit it…. any player is one of twenty O and D starters. You just make yourself sound stupid. Sorry if the truth hurts.

  48. mark2001 Says:

And lame…yes there are 11 guys on each side of the line plus ST guys. But who is counting? Oh yeah… you are.

  49. NFLNut Says:

    ************************

If the Bucs defense and kicking had been any good, JW would be in the MVP conversation … he’s having a great year

AND like I said a week ago, Jameis right now has MORE CAREER PASSING YARDS & TDS that Favre, Brady, Brees, Rodgers and Ryan ALL HAD COMBINED at the same age.

Barring any serious injury Jameis will shatter the NFL’s ALL-TIME passing yards & TD marks before he retires imho.

    ******************************

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    SB Says
“I am with Pickgrin……….Trade Baker and Ward plus a conditional draft pick to bring Michael Bennett back to Tampa”

Here’s the problem with that. He isn’t the same Bennett that left Tampa. Nor is the same that got all those sacks for the Seahawks. In fact, he hasn’t been that good in 2-3 years.

As much as I would have liked to have kept him, going back this far along is not the solution. And frankly, I don’t believe for a second that he or the Seahawks would agree to that trade.

No, we need a different solution in Tampa. We just don’t know what that solution is yet. But we will.

  51. Lamarcus Says:

Doesn’t matter. Our defense is trashed. THAT’S AN ISSUE. And it’s been the issue like forever. What pass rush? Well if gmc welcomes donald the rest is history. We kiss gmc ass like he is the best dt but nobody that’s good wants to play next him. 3 4 defense is trash gmc won’t change is position and holding us back

  52. vince picolo Says:

Jameis will become more consistently “accurate” when his own line consistently give him time to set his feet. He got in out Sunday in a big hurry out of necessity. Generally, this is the case.

    He is much improved.

The next step is better finishing, particularly in the 1st and 2nd quarters. A running game would be helpful, obviously.

  53. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Our offense did not jell as quickly as we had hoped. Most of us fantasized about a new and improved offense to go with that “stout” defense from last year.

I think our offense is finally putting it together. The loss to the Bills was 100% on our D…if nothing else I do not wish to cheer for a team with a defense that cannot protect a SEVEN point lead LATE in the 4th Q.

We had other problems for sure…but our achilles heel right now is our defense.

We could have a better running game but I think it will continue to improve. What I have difficulty seeing is where our defense improves without a massive infusion of talent.

Pickgrin agree with your post. I would dump Swaggy and Ward right now no questions asked…but who wants them? Now if we tossed a 3rd round pick with them and could pull Richard Sherman….in a heartbeat. Although I would hope the Bucs would get a contract with that which protects us in case Grimes leaves.
But age or not….if we field a team this year and NEXT with Sherman and Grimes at CB that’s an INSTANT major upgrade.

So what then Pickgrin? Draft two DE’s with picks 1 and 2? Maybe a DE and a DT? The only part of our defense that doesn’t scare me right now are our LB’s.

  54. Ryan K Says:

    Is Jameis consistently accurate?
Is Jameis consistently accurate with the deep ball ?
Does James consistently deliver the ball to his receivers in stride ?
Does Jameis consistently go through his progressions correctly ?
Does Jameis read the field well?
Does Jameis have any issues with locking on to receivers?
Does Jameis read the blitz effectively?
Does Jameis start off fast ? (perform well in the first half of games)
Does Jameis consistently take care of the ball ? ( no, this can not just be captured by stats. Does Jameis throw balls that are almost picked every single game ?)
Is Jameis CLUTCH ? and if so, list the big games Jameis has helped deliver a CLUTCH Win against a decent team in his first three seasons.

Jameis is inaccurate, struggles to read the field, struggles to take care of the ball, and has almost ZERO clutch wins on his resume.
I love Jameis. I root him on every week. He has an abundance of talent. He is a good kid. He loves football. But he is struggling overall ! I hope he gets better. I am consistently shocked at how Joe and his readers refuse to criticize the leader of this team. Joe rarely writes articles about struggles with accuracy, progressions, or clutch time performances ( which is scary to me because Jameis, who is very talented and obviously loves football, puts all the effort he can into it. Three seasons in, he still struggles in so many areas. BUT !! if you want to see articles about this, you will not see it on Joebucsfan. Joe being upset with certain segments of the bucs fan base (recent example is Joe referring to them as mentally handicapped).. tune in every Sunday night/Monday morning.. and throughout the week. Joe is a specialist at attacking fans while shielding Jameis ! Go Bucs media ! SOB

  55. bucnut2 Says:

Who cares- the guy does not win. I’l trade him for Wentz, Goff, Matiotta, right now. This guy does not finish games. Builds a bunch of stats in garbage time. No way he was worth the number #1 overall pick.

  56. bucnut2 Says:

Ryan K is SPOT on!!! JBF wake up and do some REAL reporting! And for all of you JW homers, take an objective look at YOUR guy. Yards don’t matter, wins do!!

  57. jim burns Says:

Most of his yards and touchdowns are gifts . We are behind , the defense loosens up and lets us go up and down the field a few times . Too little too late . Any offense that turns it over 3 times is setting up the defense for failure . An offense only gets the ball about 12 times a game . Give 3 of those away and you are toast . Not complicated .

  58. cgmaster Says:

In comes bucnut with his usual stupidity. You do realize that Mariota on this team would’nt have a single win right? Quite frankly , he sucks this year so get off his dick already. Goff? Damn the stupidity runs deep with you. Wentz is legit no doubt, but get Mariota’s jock out of your mouth, its become embarrassing at this point.

  59. cgmaster Says:

Ryan, Jameis has 8 4th quarter victories so there’s your clutch. Hell he did it twice in the same game against the Giants this year. This BIlls game he did everything he needed to including a drive that should’ve won the game. He’s the 6th rated QB in the NFL in PFF. He leads the number one passing offense in football, which I know you’ll just say they are all garbage yards, so don’t. I often wonder if you trolls actually watch Bucs games before you come on here or just blurt out what stupidity comes to mind. If we had half a defense or a kicker the first 4 games we’d be 4-2 right now and you trolls would have no ammo.

  60. No_Bucs_Given Says:

Love Jameis accomplishment but I feel Joe always looks at only one side of a coin. Jameis record is more a signal of the increasing yards being put up by ALL offense in the new NFL. With increase yards means more offensive records. This also means more negative defensive records such as teams giving up more and more yards, like our defense which Joe always highlights as well

  61. webster Says:

Posters like bucnut2 are idiots. All those qbs you named would lose here too because the defense sucks. Let me know when those qbs you named line up as a cb, dt, de, safety. Let me know if every one of their drives start at the 25 or worst because the sorry defense can’t flip field positions. Clueless posters like bucnut2 are just that……clueless.

For the other clueless posters who says its a different era…..news flash, the contact after 5 yards has been in existence for about 20 years. There has been many qbs in that time that could have done what jameis is doing. The only rule that was a little more recent is helmet to helmet and even still since that rule has been put in place, there have been many qbs that had a chance to do what jameis is doing. Stop hating.

  62. gilhealy Says:

    Exactly, webster. Exactly.

  63. webster Says:

Jameis winston trolls like ryan k are idiots. I cant believe the level of stupidity that comes from idiots like that. He says he has ZERO clutch wins on his resume yet jameis has 8 fourth qtr/overtime game winning drives. Thats the stupidity we are arguing with. Jameis has won 17 games and almost half have been clutch but this moron says he has ZERO clutch wins. You cant make this up. Leave it to the idiot trolls

  64. bucnut2 Says:

you JW apologists are idiots. Every “intelligent” fan knows that the QB position decides wins or losses. This guy is a LOSER!! look at our record.

  65. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Try doing some of that in the first two quarters not the last to win the games out of control in the defense is playing soft!

  66. webster Says:

Bucnut continues to show his ignorance. “Intelligent” fans know it takes a team. Drew brees from the past 4 years with multiple 5000 yard 40+ td seasons called and said hello idiot. Were have they been? 6-10/ 7-9. It takes a team. Only idiot trolls blame everything on the qb.

  67. Poor Glennon Says:

All he needs is 8 TD before his 25 birthday to catch. Josh Freeman’s 68 TD before his 25th birthday. Hahahaha

  68. Poor Glennon Says:

Im pretty sure your in a favorable position to amass alot of passing yards. When your down by 2 scores (garbage time) all the time. All you Winston lovers have to go on is passing yards…..that’s it. I remember when Jon Kitna was a fantasy football hero in Detroit. Had to change the QB points to -6 for INT. To prevent some crappy QB piling up the passing yards. Against prevent defences in garbage time. 400 yards 4TD 3INT and a fumble. Is a huge fantasy game. But it’s a loss almost every game in reality football

  69. BuccoDav Says:

Ridiculous comparison… Marino did it in 2 seasons…

  70. passthebuc Says:

    @joe
    interesting thought.
But like boxing, it’s not how many punches you throw during a fight, its if you’re still standing at the end.

  71. passthebuc Says:

    @Ryan K
put a list together for the coaching staff, i need a good laugh
