ASJ Just Not Cutting It

Can’t extend for catches when needed.

Joe has officially turned the page on Austin Seferian-Jenkins, the high-talent, high-skills, high-maintenance tight end of the Bucs.

Mabye ASJ makes a big time turnaround from his second season to his third season, but Joe has zero expectations for the guy. He’s not even the best tight end on the Bucs and may not be the second-best tight end.

When is the last time you saw this guy make a catch when the pass was not in his numbers? The final play of the first half today was a perfect example. America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, led ASJ on a pass that, for a 6-5 dude, was easily catchable.

Problem is, whenever ASJ has to extend his arms any more than six inches away from his chest, he looks like he is trying to catch a ball wearing boxing gloves.

(The only time Joe can remember ASJ ever making a remotely difficult catch is when the game is out of hand, like the Hail Mary last week and the long catch today after being down three scores. Would be nice if he ever could make a complex catch when needed.)

But boy, ASJ sure can act the fool when he wants. At that, ASJ is a solid first-teamer, perhaps a Pro Bowler.

If ASJ values an extended career with the Bucs, he better live in Jameis’ back bedroom this winter and haul in passes from Jameis night and day all offseason. And Jameis shouldn’t throw one good pass to him. If for whatever reason he cannot extend to make a catch because of his bum shoulder, then the clown who authorized him to be on the field should be fired.

At this point, Cameron Brate and fan favorite Luke Stocker should play over ASJ. Unless, of course, Lovie Smith enjoys AJS’s dramatics after each miscue.

Unless he proves otherwise, ASJ is a washout as a second round pick.

I thought the exact same thing, Joe. I couldn’t believe he didn’t extend for that very catchable ball.

  2. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

Evans and ASJ are absolutely the weakest mental duo in the league. Both soft, stupid, prone to criticial mistakes and whiners to the refs. They might not be busts but they won’t ever be what we hoped.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

small potatoes joe, Now you can say that “lovie is not cutting it”!!!!!!

  4. JWBUCS Says:

I would venture to say that Brate would catch 95% of the balls ASJ drops.

  5. knucknbuc Says:

He sucks. Just like I said in the preseason and before the season. Waste of a 2nd round pick. I can’t stand this guy.

  6. J Says:

    And JaBoob is?

  7. Bucnut2 Says:

JW can’t throw one good pass to anyone in the first half of a game.

  8. BrianBucs Says:

Just another under-performing high draft pick

Bucs O-Line got butt-whipped today also

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

If that’s all ASJ has got, then his expectations and high pre draft can’t miss praise was blowing smoke.

  10. Christina Says:

Agreed Joe that was a pathetic attempt for a “pro”

  11. Luther Says:

Why are you here Bucnut…You have nothing good to say about Winston, no matter what he does. Is EK your girlfriend or something?

  12. Vincente Says:

Get rid of him. If he can’t succeed with Winston tossing him the ball he’s got to go. Cisco Koetter for HC!

  13. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

    Stocker? Fan favorite? BS
Yeah we have a lot of head cases on this team.

A profound statement, Realist…..you really talk football here….I’m thoroughly impressed…..and I thought you had an IQ of 70….it’s at least 75.

As far as ASJ is concerned….Joe might be right….but he’s got two years left on his rookie contract and a training camp in front of him.
That particular pass should have been caught…..but he wouldn’t have scored anyway.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Right. Lets give up on a 2nd year player but lets keep the imcompetent Veterean HC!!

    LOLOL!

There wasnt much that went right today. Asj was far from being a problem. Winston has regressed the last 4 weeks. That is my biggest concern. I Love Winston and will always support him, but he has played poorly for 4 consecutive weeks. The accuracy has been terrible. I know Winston will work his butt off all off season. But it certainly has me down that winston couldnt come through in the ways he was advertised to do. And it’s not just his fault. Our recievers can’t get open. No matter what defense it has been they just can’t get open in their own. We need some good route runners. Screw speed. Guys that can get open regardless of how fast or slow they are.

  18. Capt Blighe Says:

With the Buc’s 2nd round they select Hunter Henry TE Arkansas

  19. gotbbucs Says:

How many more good players that need better coaching do you want to see leave and succeed elsewhere? A head coach with a spine can reel guys like asj and evans in.

  20. Coopsxx Says:

Stop complaining about the guys we do have.

    We have zero talent at:
    DE
    CB
    S

    Focus your hatred there first.

I said it in an earlier post this week, give me a BRATE n not an ASJ (A Soft Jerk). ASJ proved me right last year and the same this year. He’s just a big body afraid of contact but does more jaw jacking than performing. I feel for young Winston who has repeatedly sacrificed his body to score n make plays while ASJ n Evans continue to shoot the team in the foot. Evans is a quitter, he was not about to sacrifice his body for the team in the closing moments. He used an under cover tactic to get kicked out of the game to avoid being labeled a quitter. With all the JNorman/ODB conflict that lead to a suspension u think Evans didn’t know the rules. Evans flinches anytime he’s being tackled. Plays scared with a BIG MOUTH.He’s selfish and disconnected from being a team player to go to war n support of Jameis. I’m done with Evans n his Kellen Winslow antics. Lovie need to take action with these two now n send a message to the team to shape up or ship out ASAP!!

  22. BucrazeDave Says:

Winston much more effective when Jackson was playing.
Bucnut is right, Winston notorious slow starter. Same at FSU last year.
Love the guy but that fact is indesputable.
I’m afraid it’s engrained in his psyche and has become habit.
Confident he will overcome it next year.

  23. Destinjohnny Says:

There were soooooooo many players we could have taken with that pick wow

  24. BucrazeDave Says:

Sadly ASJ and Evans are immature and selfish.
Winston so much more mature as a rookie.
He’ll have to take both of them under his wing and show them how to be professional. Hopefully Jackson will be back and help in that regard too.

  25. BucrazeDave Says:

    Have to disagree with DestinJohnny.
I feel Winston right pick. Has the skills.
Will be a franchise QB. Remember he’s a rookie.

  26. ToesOnTheLine!! Says:

I’ve heard “experts” say the TE position often takes a couple years before you see talent translate to production, but I’m growing skeptical of ASJ as well. He’s been unable to stay on the field, so maybe that’s stunted his progress? Maybe it’s mental (doesn’t have the drive to be great?)…I honestly have no idea why a guy with his talent can’t get his game together?

  27. Pelbuc Says:

DMatt is right on! ASJ and Evans are classic examples of incompetent coaches and no discipline. Theses guys have no team concept and it’s all about them until someone lays down the law. Fans would ranther see less talent and more heart like Brate and Humphries, the real “Dunkaneers”. As for the defense, time to sit L&L down and explain the hiring of a real DC.

  28. Rrsrq Says:

My problem is we never used those guys in the red zone due their size, maybe that’s Dirk, maybe it’s Jameis, maybe it’s them, but I never saw them use those guys the right way. I’m keeping the faith

  29. Tim Says:

I’d like to know if the dude is still hurt. Ever since he came back he seems kinda stiff and always kinda short arms it. Almost like he’s still banged up pretty good. Or at least trying to overly protect himself. Seems to show some flashes of talent. But if you can’t stay healthy then I guess none of that really matters.

  30. FortMyersDave Says:

Tim perhaps he is injured but this is a league where “what ifs” do not matter, right now the guy is simply a bust. I am guessing he will have a 3rd year with Lovie to redeem himself but his leash has to be getting short….

  31. Danati74 Says:

    Evans and ASJ….punkaneers!

  32. FortMyersDave Says:

Evans and ASJ remind me of a a tandem of WR/TE that Cleveland had a decade ago: Kellen Winslow Jr and Braylon Edwards; the difference is that Kellen Jr actually did put up some decent numbers with the Browns before the Bucs gave up a 2nd and 5th rounder for him. No way in ****ing hell that ASJ will ever come close to fetching that much even if he puts up decent numbers in his 3rd year and Mikey Evans drops balls just like edwards did for the Browns and always seemed to have lots of “potential”…..
