Slant Passes Continue To Haunt

Bucs corners, like Toast Jenkins, are confused by the slant.

Bucs corners, like Toast Jenkins, are confused by the slant.

The horror began in Week 1. Over four months later and into a new year, the horror show continues.

How is it that an NFL coaching staff– from Lovie Smith on down to the defensive quality control assistant — cannot figure out how to defense one of the most basic pass plays in all of football?

Don’t give Joe this nonsense too many former players try to front: “It’s the Jimmys and Joes, not the Xs and Os.” So you are trying to tell Joe all of the guys Lovie has run out there at cornerback — six! — none of them can defend a slant?

Look, there are very good former college and pro players who coach high school football locally. If the local NFL coaching staff can’t figure out how to defend a basic high school pass route, there are all sorts of coaches who will be happy to teach up Lovie and his staff, likely for free.

Time to utilize this resource, guys.

    Can’t pass rush.

    Can’t cover.

    Can’t tackle.

    Can’t block.

Like Brian bucs said in a previous post….I love my Bucs but this team sucks. I have been reluctant to jump on this bandwagon but I am done with defensive guru Lovie Smith.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

In honor of lovie, the league needs more than just a “time of possession” stat. There needs to be a “killing the clock because the game is out of hand in the third quarter again” stat!!!!!!!

  4. Lovie Is Dog Poo Says:

Schiano as a D coach >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lovie as a D coach. And we hired Lovie for D so….

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I will join the “Fire Lovie’s Son” bandwagon…..our DB coaches have failed miserably……we have been burned for two years by the same type passes…..and you’d think we’d have more interceptions……the truth is we are usually no where near the receivers.

  6. Desanova Says:

Lovie should fire the safeties coach. Oh wait, it’s his son!

  7. unbelievable Says:

All DB coaches need to go.

    Same for WR coach.

And Frazier has to go too, just nature of the business.

Our linebackers bite on the run fake. That’s what causes them to be open. Most of the time a CB will let a WR take the inside route. Because that is where the help is in a zone defense. But when the linebackers are all flooding the line instead of into their zones. It makes for easy an play for the offense. The reason we excel at run defense is because our linebackers sell out to stopping the run, forgetting any pass coverage responsibilities. And thats when we get burned. I wonder how many times the bucs gave up an easy pass off a play action pass. I guarantee you it is a high percentage play for offenses. Lavonte David is a savage run defender. But when he shoots gaps to stop a run on a run fake, he is out of position in pass coverage.

Barring a blockbuster surprise announcement Lovie part 3 get’s the rerun. Somehow this seems less than inspiring.

  10. BrianBucs Says:

Every single OC and QB in the NFL can figure out how to disect and carve up Lovie’s defensive scheme.
    Time for a HUGE change

  11. The original "Kevin" Says:

Press the reciever at the line….Jam his ass up!!!!Throw off the route. But no….thats not how lovie wants his giys playing we have to be a chrarmin soft toilet paper sponsor. Soft football. The girls in the cfl would beat us with lovie coaching. Im done with this bum that was not a professional team out there

  12. PhillyBuc Says:

    Fire Lovie

  13. FortMyersDave Says:

Absolutely no adjustments from Lovie’s staff with this D; just a turnstyle of players…… “Lovie is Dog Poo”: Greg Schiano is currently acting as Oscar Meyer’s DC at Ohio State, but yeah I agree with the sentiment; Greg may have been a tyrant but the Bucs did play better D during his 11-21 tenure which was 3 games better than lovie’s 8-24 run as Buc’s skipper….. Lovie has to be forced by the Glazer boys to revamp the whole defensive scheme starting with him stepping aside as DC…..

Why can’t we stop one of the most basic pass plays in all of football, the slant route? It has to do with all of the above, we don’t play bump and run, the CB’s allow the receivers to take the inside route because that is where the help is, in a zone defense, unless the Linebackers bite on play action and then there is no help. Most of all if you watch our CB’s try to cover the slant route they are simply to slow. We need two new starters at CB and two new starters at Safety if this defense is going to have any success. We need a new secondary Coach, yes, one Coach for the Safeties and CB. Not a Safeties Coach, a CB Coach and a Nickle Coach. That is insane..

  15. Kevin Says:

Broken record bucs. I could go out on that field drunk with an eye patch on and a string connecting both ankles and defend slant passes better than us. How is Lovie still around when he has failed yo solve one of the simplest of problems on a defense.
