Lovie: “Jameis Winston Will Be Our Starting Quarterback”

Lovie said it himself at 12:01 p.m. EST today.

The head coach made it crystal clear at the One Buc Palace podium moments ago: Jameis will be the guy from Day 1 of training camp.

Rough day for the Mike Glennon Mob, which was yearning for a what they called “fair competition.”

  1. University of Seffner Says:

The Jameis era has officially begun. PLEASE be the answer. Go Bucs!

  2. JayBucsBoi Says:

This is the best thing going. Now he can develop chemistry with the 1st team O from Day 1 as well. Titans announced the same for Mariota. It’s on week 1 kats!

  3. Tiny Tim Says:

The delusional Glennon Mob you mean Joe? He is where he belongs. On the bench holding the clip board. You know….break glass in case of emergency.

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Was there ever any doubt Jameis would be the starter from day one?

Glennon is a fairly solid game manager who is capable of making some plays. He is a good back up QB and I’m glad he is on the team.

Winston is a game changer who is going to light up the field and electrify Raymond Jameis Stadium multiple times every home game. Will he make some mistakes? Of course. Especially in his 1st year Every QB makes mistakes and throws interceptions. But this young man is smart. VERY smart. And he will learn from his mistakes over time and develop a sense of what he can and can’t do in this league. He will learn when to push the envelope and when to lay back and let the game come to him.

I’m glad the wait for training camp is finally over and still feel like I need to pinch myself to ensure its not a dream that the Bucs now have a QB with bonafide top tier talent.

  5. JBoo Wins Says:

A new day has begun. In less then 5 years we will be in the Superbowl. Jboo Wins!!!!!!!!

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I guess Joe won’t be able to say “Stop the silliness” any longer….unless Joe feels like it…..

  7. Couch Fan Says:

Yes! The first of many gifting of starting jobs to those who have not earned it. What could possibly go wrong? It worked so well for us last year…. GO BUCS!

  8. BucFan20 Says:

And who did not see this coming? Oh that’s right it was Joe. Remember the daily please don’t let Glennon start stories.

  9. Howard Cosell Says:

    Great.
Lovie Claus is at it again.
    Merry Christmas! You’re the starter.
No need to compete. You have the job, now go relax.

  10. Bucco Brice Says:

Hopefully, with training camp now begun, there will be OTHER stories to report. Exhausted with Americas QB 🙂

  11. Tiny Tim Says:

Couch it is official you are clueless. You are the only person alive who would pick a QB #1 overall and have him sit on the bench behind a career backup. News flash clueless one……Jameis earned the starting position just by being the #1 pick in the draft. Its as simple as that. Get a freaking clue please sir.

  12. OneLove Says:

Mike Glennon will NEVER be as good as Famous Jameis aka “America’s Quarterback” aka “I slap Mike Glennon around for fun” aka “I’m gonna make Lovie look like a GENIUS!”

“It’s as simple as that” – Coach Smith

  13. Buc1987 Says:

Couch…even Mariota was “gifted” the starting job….

  14. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

couchfan, who says he didn’t earn it?

They’ve gone through OTA’s, and constant skull sessions since the draft. If Jameis is clearly better than Glennon at this point then why not name him the starter rather than have a fake competition where you already know who the better qb is?

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Tiny Minded Tim seems to have reading comprehension issues. Nowhere have I ever said MG8 should start. There should only be competition to prove Winston is the better QB… Gifting of starting jobs is a bad idea.

But its ok, I forgive your hatred and stupidity over MG8. Incompetent Lovie will get us at least 3 wins this year. I have faith!! Rejoice Buc fans!!

  16. Couch Fan Says:

    @Cream

Nobody earns starting spots in OTAs in their underwear and non contact practices. Thats just silly. If Winston is so much better than Glennon. Let them show it during pre-season and training camp. Not sure why everybody is so scared of competition. Winston has not took as single snap in the NFL yet so its rididulous to say he’s better than anybody at this point. Nothing wrong with making him earn it. A few missed 1st team reps is not going to hurt his development. But it just might give him a big head like it did another franchise QB we had… Im tired of repeating past mistakes and watching my team go 2-14, 4-12, 3-13 every freaking year.

And no I dont trust Incompetent Lovie’s judgement on anything.

  17. JMN Says:

Yeah don’t know who in their right mind wants to see Glennon starting on opening day. The new future began the day Winston was drafted. Glennon is a solid backup.

  18. Couch Fan Says:

    @87

Mariota, like most 1st round picks, has nobody worth a damn to compete with him in Tennessee. Winston however isn’t in the same situation. All I’m saying is let the two play some pre-season games before determining who the better QB is to lead the Bucs right now before we even see what the two can do in the new offense… I dont trust the opinions of know it all Couch GMs cuz most are just blinded by their own hatred and Lovie shouldn’t of earned anyone’s trust yet with that crap show he dispalyed last year.

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

Couch Fan – another sad Bucs fan who uses false information to support his glass fully empty outlook on the team.

The Titans arguably have a QB with more upside than Glenon in Mettenberger; their rookie from last year. All pre-draft we heard they may roll with Mettenberger and take a safer pick at #2 than Mariota or Winston. So this idea that they had no other QB worth competing is just wrong.

Glennon is not the future man. This isn’t even really much news to me. Everyone should have known Winston would end up starting the day we took him. He would start wherever he got drafted

  20. tmaxcon Says:

    8 + (19-9) = 5-13

  21. ptwalk Says:

Sorry Couch I have to disagree Mettenberger is as good as Glennon competition wise.

  22. Couch Fan Says:

Ahh yes Metternberger with all 7 games of his career… he’s definately worthy to compete with a 1st round pick… more sillyness to the blind faithful.

Again. Nobody said Glennon should start or that he is the future. Some of you really need to read slower and comprehend.

Let me break my opinion down for you since you clearly dont understand. Winston is a rookie and Yes I understand he IS the future. I was all for drafting Winston… But Winston is a rookie and like most rookies Winston will struggle…. Thats a fact even you hateful MG8 people can’t deny.

Now its entirely possible that Glennon could be better right now while Winston is still learning the pro game… yes it is. Now IF thats the case, Which we will never know cuz Incompetent Lovie made another mistake by just gifting Winston the job, Wouldn’t it be in the Bucs interest to the let the better QB start the season until Winston is ready?

I expect and think Winston is and will be better. He has more talent. But I’m not willing to look into anyones crystal ball and predict whos better. A coach who has a clue would let them play it out, at least a little bit. But not Incompetent Lovie.

This isnt about who starts the season. It’s about making sure whoever starts is the better QB. LOL… But go head and continue saying senseless things that I’ve never said and trying to turn a conversation into something its not.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Mettenberger is far and away better than Glennon.

Like they are saying above Winston would have been the starter no matter where he was drafted.

  24. Bucs4lyfe Says:

    Couch Fan

5-13 in starts Tampa so lovie already knows what glennon is, open competition to see glennon play exactly like he did the last two years? Why do you think Mccown was gifted the job? It was more about glennon than lovie, he’s a garbage backup and chances are Winston was better on the field and in the classroom. Are you don’t you didn’t see the Winston highlights from ota? This was the obvious plan

  25. ptwalk Says:

Name a QB number 1 overall pick that didn’t start. I think you just get off by calling Lovie incompetent.

  26. Buc1987 Says:

Couch…I get what your saying. You want Lovie to lie to the fans, the team and say there’s going to be a competition between the 2 QB’s. Even though EVERYONE including you knows that’s not the case…

  27. tmaxcon Says:

    Couch

There is not one aspect of glennon’s game that is better than Winston pereiod. Winston is more accurate, reads defenses better, more mobile, better decision maker and his leadership / it factor are off the charts compared to 8. Wasting 1st team reps on a inferior player is asinine.

  28. Couch Fan Says:

Lol and after I break down my opinion you still try to imply I want Glennon to start. This stuff is to funny.

And if your judging Glennon by wins and losses then if we go 3-13 this year with Winston. Are we prepared to give up on him so easily as well?

    Make sure you stay consistent….

Incompetent Lovie got his name because so far he’s shown to be thoroughly incompetent. Dont blame me, blame his atrocious coaching that took place last year.

  29. ptwalk Says:

Couch I respect your opinion, we both just want the best for our bucs.

  30. Couch Fan Says:

    87

Thats silly. Lie to the fans? No… against more twisting.

If Winston is so much better which you all believe, it will be obvious to everyone that Winston should start. But I havent seen him take a single snap in pre-season yet. Have you? Therefore, its not so obvious to me. I know your crystal ball, much like Lovie’s, is on point though.

    @Tmax

Again I have no crystall ball to see the future like you do so I dont agree until I actually see it. I’m not bashing Winston. Like I said I fully expect him to be better. But I want to see it first in live action. Gifting of starting jobs to rookies when you MAY have something better already on the team is foolish and may result in bad results. Like 2-14….

  31. Buc1987 Says:

Couch…I’m certainly not implying that you want Glennon to start. I know exactly what you’re saying as I posted above. You want Lovie to lie.

  32. Couch Fan Says:

    Exactly PTwalk.

Im looking at the bigger picture. Whats in the best interest of the Bucs. I want us to win. So tired of losing.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

    I give up!

  34. Couch Fan Says:

No 87 what I really want is for you to make another banner. This time for Winston… and while your at it make one for Lovie to. Lol

  35. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

couch, you have to realize that what you’re advocating for is an even 50-50 split of reps until the regular season

Jameis needs every single rep he can get right now, especially with the first team if that’s where he’s going to be when the season opens up

Why delay the inevitable? Just so we can say there was an “open” competition?

  36. Buc1987 Says:

Don’t worry about banners and signs. I give up on this whole topic. I’m done, because this is utter foolishness at this point.

  37. Couch Fan Says:

It doesnt even have to be 50/50. 80/20 is good. Hell I’d be ok with 90/10 As long as we get a look at both QBs with the 1’s. If Winston is so much better it should be obvious right from pre-season Game 1. You all are making this way more complicated than it needs to be. Training camp is also a good judge of whos better to. I dont think the loss of a few 1st team reps is going to hinder Jameis. Saying I want Lovie to lie to fans is stupid. Lovie didnt have to say anything much like he usually does. But he did and it doesnt matter now. Mistake has been made. Good news is, another 2 or 3 win season and Incompetent Lovie is out of here.

  38. CAN'T FIX IT Says:

In all , I wonder just how J/W would have done behind the same offense line that Glennon had last year OR THE YEAR BEFORE, and now you just give the keys to the offense to Winston with out a fight , Well,, will see if Glennon is need when wintson fails. but if I was Glennon I would ask to be TRADED before the season started and go with a real team !!!!!!!

  39. D-Rome Says:

I don’t have an issue with Winston being named the starter but I think some of you guys are way too hard on Glennon. He had a garbage offensive line to work with and a very poor running game supporting him and his role. The QB position is the most dependent position on the field. Also, let’s not forget that last year in the games that he played Glennon put up similar statistics as Cam Newton. He is not a bad QB at all and as a Bucs fan I’m grateful he’s on the team. He’s certainly an asset that adds depth to the QB position.

Too many of you keep parroting his record as if that’s the be all end all of evaluating a QB.

  40. Buc-A-New Says:

Man some of you Winstonites are something else! Couch merely speaks the truth. Nobody should be gifted Anything. Why Are you guys so quick to attack someone that you perceive is slighting JW in any way? Couch never said anything negative in the slightest way about JW. Some of you guys should really get out of line to buy one of JW’s jock straps.

  41. Jody Says:

It shows Lovie Smith needs to go. This is gonna be a train wreck of season. 40 int’s. I cant see em winning any games. I think Winston is gonna suck bad. You peeps will be crying for Freeman halfway through season. This will be hard to watch.

  42. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome

Wins and loses aka records are the only stat that matters. All the rest is just fuel for excuses and justification for mediocrity.

    ——————————-

Because Couch was in the Mariotta camp before the draft and asking for competition between the stork/dork Glennon is just sour grapes. If the Bucs had of drafted Mariota, all these so called competition cry babies would not be saying Glennon is getting a raw deal. It has more to do with him and others like him not wanting winston to begin with.

  44. Couch Fan Says:

Tiny MInded Tim. I was NEVER in the Mariota camp. In fact I said more than once Mariota shouldn’t even be takin in the top 10. Try again. I have been for Winston since the end of last season… Lol

Keep showing how clueless you are my friend.

  45. D-Rome Says:

    D-Rome

Wins and loses aka records are the only stat that matters. All the rest is just fuel for excuses and justification for mediocrity.

That’s not true at all when properly evaluating talent in any sport on any level. By your reasoning Gerald McCoy and Lavonte David are bad players because the Bucs defense was in the bottom half of the league.

  46. tmaxcon Says:

    D-Rome

Maybe you should follow T-ball…. They don’t keep score, everyone gets a trophy and they sing kumbaya for the 4 inning stretch…

wins and losses are the ONLY thing that matter. Until they change the objective of the game to: trying hard or rankings. You are either a winner or a loser.

and yes until LVD & GMC win something, he will be lumped in with the losers because it’s a team sport and NOT individual. By your reasoning they would take the 11 best players in the league at each position and give them Superbowl rings and Lombardi trophy’s. if your team loses you get labeled a loser regardless of talent level. its a team sport where winning is the only thing. win as a team and LOSE as a team…

  47. rdbucfan Says:

    Tmaxcon,

Actually every stat line in the NFL Glennon is better than Winson (Winston has never played in an NFL game) and he ran faster at the combine. Other than that I have nothing. I didn’t like all of the off the field issues with Winston. He is now the QB of my favorite team and I will cheer for them and him until or if he turns into Shameis. I hope and pray Shameis never shows his face again and we only get Jameis from here on out.

As far as competition. All Couchfan was asking for is Winston get the 1st series with the 1st team and Glennon gets the 2nd series with the 1st team of the 1st preseason game and that there is your competition and Winston is now your starter. It wouldn’t hurt anything. We all know that competition makes everyone better.

  48. tmaxcon Says:

    rdbucfan

in order for there to be competition the player competing must be equal or better. Glennon is not equal to or better than Jameis at ANYTHING… The only thing Glennon has proven better than Jameis is LOSING

  49. Couch Fan Says:

The simple fact that Winston hasent took a single snap in the NFL yet proves your statement is incorrect and just ignorant.

  50. rdbucfan Says:

    Tmaxcon,

I can’t believe I’m going to say this but as of this moment Josh Freeman is a better NFL QB than Winson and I can’t stand Freeman. Glennon is the only NFL QB on this team. Winston is most likely better, but as far as NFL QB Glennon wins hands down because he has actually started and won games in the NFL. This is not the ACC. I think Winston will be the better QB but I don’t think he is going to break Glennon’s rookie NFL records. Until Jameis starts and finishes an NFL game, he is just a rookie that has never played 1 down in the NFL. You can’t count preseason games either. When Winston starts and finishes 1 NFL game can you make comparisons to Glennon.

  51. Couch Fan Says:

RDBucFan hitting them with facts instead of crystal ball readings. I like it!

  52. D-Rome Says:

    tmaxcon,

Do yourself a favor and stop being ignorant. My original statement is that talent is not evaluated by anyone solely on wins and losses. Talk to any talent evaluator and scout and they would agree with me. You’re essentially saying that anyone who plays on a bad team is a bad player.

Hey, Chris Archer is 9-8 right now. He’s arguably the 2nd best pitcher in the A.L. but by your logic he’s mediocre because of his win-loss record. It doesn’t work that way. The Saints went 7-9 last year so I guess that means Drew Brees sucks as a QB and he’s a loser.

By your logic when Jameis Winston does no better than 6-10 with no less than 18 INTs it’ll be time to go back to the drawing board at QB because he’s a loser. Right???

  53. JBF Addict Says:

    CreamsicleBananaHammock nailed it.

And I choose to have faith in our OC about this. That’s what’s really behind this decision. So many seem to be missing the fact that it’s the OC in charge of that side now. Lovie is just the pitchman.

  54. milenko Says:

You don’t draft a QB #1 and have him ride the pine.
