Draft Happenings Slapped Schiano CoachingMay 10th, 2014
As it stands now after free agency and three rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft (the Bucs have no fourth-round pick), Tampa Bay likely will have only three new starters on defense: Alterraun Verner, Clinton McDonald and Michael Johnson.
That’s the equivalent of Lovie Smith grabbing a bullhorn and telling the world Greg Schiano didn’t know how to coach defense.
It’s pretty darn stunning.
A new defensive-minded coach comes in and only swaps out three starters? There was no top-10 Bucs defense last season. They were below average, at best.
Take it a step further; of Lovie’s nine years in Chicago, in eight of those years Lovie’s teams drafted defensive linemen with early picks.
Not this year.
Warren Sapp got in Joe’s face a bit at Super Bowl media day, telling Joe that the Bucs defense as it was on that day was just fine. DaQuan Bowers would be fine, Sapp said. Same for Adrian Clayborn. It was simply the system and coaching that was completely out of whack, Sapp said.
It seems Lovie was on the same page.
