That was the determination made by Jason Licht back in March and it’s looking like one heck of a wise decision. David may not have had a lot of suitors, but the Bucs could have chosen to let him walk, pairing Devin White with a younger partner on the inside.

Style points are for figure skaters, not football teams.

Tampa Bay’s 27-17 triumph against the Bears was no modern art masterpiece, yet Bucs fans couldn’t care less. Except for a fourth-quarter lapse that saw Chicago march 90 yards to pull within three points, the Buc defense looked dominant in the home opener.

How important is a 2-0 start? Since 1990, NFL teams that open with two wins make the postseason at a 64 percent clip.

You can demean the Bears as a 4-13 club all you want, but there have been plenty of Buc teams over the years that would have found a way to lose games like this. Instead, Tampa Bay maintained possession for almost 12 more minutes than the visitors and those 17 additional offensive snaps were critical given the heat dome that sat above Raymond James Stadium.

Not surprisingly, the locker room was a sea of smiles. Tristan Wirfs and Mike Evans credited a stout defense, Lavonte David expressed his admiration for a turnover-free offense and over in the corner, Jason Licht almost suffered a hand injury from giving out all those high-fives. (more…)

Some Buc fans don’t want to hear it, but this organization is doing the exact right thing regarding Mike Evans and a contract extension. The franchise is keeping its options open, much to the dismay of Buc Nation.

If NFL scouting is an art form, Gil Brandt was Picasso and Rembrandt rolled into one.

Brandt passed away Thursday at the age of 91, leaving behind a trail of current league executives he mentored, Along with Tom Landry and Tex Schramm, he built the Dallas dynasty that included a startling run of 20 consecutive winning seasons.

More than 20 years ago, he took a liking to a young New England scout and showed him the personnel ropes. Introduced by Bill Belichick, Brandt and Jason Licht developed a strong bond. (more…)

The last time the Bucs faced Kirk Cousins on the road, he stopped on his way to the post-game locker room and bellowed to the assembled media:

“You like that?” Cousins crowed. The Bucs were not amused on that shocking afternoon in 2015.

Cousins had just led Washington back from a 24-0 deficit, throwing for three second-half touchdowns in an improbable 31-30 triumph. Tampa Bay was 2-3 and coming off a bye week when Cousins found tight end Jordan Reed from six yards out for the winning score with only 24 seconds remaining.

It was Reed’s 11th catch of the day as Lovie Smith’s Bucs self-destructed with 16 penalties. (more…)
