McCoy Says Tight Back Was The Core Problem

August 6th, 2012

Now Joe has no medical degree, and Joe didn’t stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but Joe knows enough to sniff out a somewhat fishy medical diagnosis.

So when Gerald McCoy told SiriusXM NFL Radio today that tight back muscles led to his two torn biceps in consecutive seasons, Joe was left feeling suspicious.

“What we found out, you know, I got examined more, they looked over my body a little bit more and they found a lot of tight muscles in my back,” McCoy said. “There was a lot of restricted movement … which led to the problem in my arms, stemming down all the way down to my bicep tendon, which was insane, crazy how your muscles are attached.”

Joe couldn’t find a Bucs official that would confirm that a mysteriously tight back led to McCoy landing on injured reserve twice. Frankly, this sounds to Joe more like a chatty, busty massage therapist using her feminine wiles to convince McCoy to buy more offseason rub downs, or perhaps an aggressive physical therapist trying to get in McCoy’s head and score some more expensive stretching sesssions.

Regardless, if McCoy’s feeling like his now loose back is going to keep him healthy, Joe’s happy to go with it.

Go get’em, Gerald.

Hopefully one day he’ll let his play do his talking for him. Would be a nice change of pace.

thought process behind it, if your back wont bend back… your arms are wrenched, instead of pulled.

if you run past a tree at full speed and reach out to clothes line it your back will naturally twist to absorb the pain, you may even spin around.

a running back bolting past mccoy, he reaches out in a last ditch (poor tackling but only option left, a for effort move) and instead of twisting as he grabs on, his back is stiff and his arms shoot straight back behind him, instead of letting go as soon as uncomfortable, he held on, trying to make a play. stupid.

its somewhat logical explanation, but its like saying the treads on your tires wear down so fast because your steering is touchy, if its always been like that, then you figure your body would be used to it, sorta like a person who drives a car with touchy brakes drives differently than someone without.

as dan points out this is a very legitimate problem. ive had back problems for quite a while and after playing any sport that requires tackling my biceps can feel very tight..
and even if it has nothing to do with his biceps, a flexible and strong back is very very important for any athlete

Maybe he just needed a happy ending.

    Weak back and weak mind..

  6. McBuc Says:

FlBoy, just a question…should he not talk to the press? Typically they are required to talk to the press. GMC played fine last year, until he was injured. Let’s see what he has this year.

    Joe here,

@Bobby – Nothing quite like some Bucs poetry/lyrics to start the day. …Joe’s waiting for RastaMon to start commenting in haiku again.

  9. Bobby Says:

@Joe…LOL! Consider it a birthday gift from the ‘Literary Society’ portion of your posters…. ;>)

  10. Tampa2 Says:

Same story every year for McCoy. Lots of Preseason hype, yet has never been anything more than a coulda, woulda, shoulda player. This is year 3 of the “this is McCoy’s year” hype. Dominick’s not trading up for SUH, while declaring McCoy the best player in the draft, has to be his worst move in his GM career. Paying McCoy all that money was his 2nd worst move. And if McCoy pulls his Twitter finger muscle this year, Keeping McCoy on the roster will be Dominick’s 3rd worst move.

  11. Bobby Says:

Tampa 2 how stupid are you! What makes you think that Detroit was interested in a trade little mind?? You talk about how dumb Dominick was for not trading and yet you think the GM of the Lions would have traded Suh?? Your logic is flawed at best and just plain moronic at worst. I’ll go with the latter. Then to top things off, you assume that McCoy is a bust when anyone with eyes can see that he is going to be a beast this year. Why not just post under your real name of Thomas 2.2??? Please….don’t drink and post. Get a designated poster or something…. You just look foolish when you don’t.

  12. Bobby Says:

Oh, and Suh was just an average DT last year….nothing special.

  13. the_buc_realist Says:

keep pumping up how great McCoy is and what a great camp he is having, maybe we can then recoup a 4th round draft pick when we trade him.

  14. Bobby Says:

@the_buc_realist……how can you be posting?? Aren’t you missing Jerry Springer???

  15. FlBoy84 Says:

    @McBuc,

Definitely have no problem with him talking with the press, which he is required to do. The constant need for attention like with the Twittering, the “I’m going to have a breakout year”, “I’m going to be Comeback Player of the Year”, “I just do what I do”, “I”…. “I”…. “I”….. . Not much team talk in there. Just saying he may want to take a few notes from Clayborn and just let his play make his statement.

  16. the_buc_realist Says:

You’re right FLBoy84, he does always say I,I,I. But that is because he is always rehabbing. But he is still selfish. He should be say My rehab trainer and I are going to have “A Breakout Year.” My rehab trainer and I will be the “Comeback Player.”

  17. Bobby Says:

It’s like flies on a piece of @@#!. One lame poster and they all start buzzing around….

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

Nice to see Tampon 2 filling in for Thomas. Maybe his head really did explode last night. Chest bumps all around!

I sure miss Raheem, greatest Buc coach ever. The guy was a pure genius. GMC should easily get 30 sacks this season.

  19. Tristan Berry Says:

    BMA, you rock! *LOL*
