“Killer Instinct” Talk Again At One Buc Palace

October 20th, 2026

“Jason, I thought we addressed this.”

It was early April of 2025 when Joe sat at a resort breakfast table with Todd Bowles and the Bucs head coach started talking about his team needing to develop a killer instinct.

No, Joe was not on vacation with Bowles. It was during the NFL owners meetings at the swanky Breakers resort in Palm Beach.

Bowles talked about the team needing to stop playing close games and to start winning the NFC South easily.

“We gotta have a killer instinct and we got to try to blow people out and try to win the division instead of it going to the last week,” Bowles said.

Joe followed up and asked Bowles how he can develop a “killer instinct” in a veteran team. Bowles said it can’t come from him.

It was as if Bowles was waving a white flag at a trait his team desperately needed. Multiple times since, Bowles has noted effort and killer instinct must come from players, not coaches.

“It’s more accountability and practice and competing against each other,” Bowles told Joe. “It’s not a coach thing.”

“They can hear me talk every day, all day up there on the stage, but when they start talking to each other and holding each other accountable from a vocal standpoint, whether that’s tough love or whether that’s kind love, either way, it gets across. And how we get our point across and how we approach games is important. You develop that through the spring and the summer from a chemistry standpoint — to making sure you’re getting your point across to having [more competition] in training camp or doing little things like that to help [players] along.”

And here fans sit more than 18 months later and the Bucs have a poor killer instinct, losing close game after close game during a 3-12 run dating back nearly a year.

Yesterday, Bowles was asked on SiriusXM NFL Radio what the team must do to start winning tough games.

“It’s really just a killer instinct at the end,” Bowles said. “We gotta find ways to win the game at the end. We’re in every ball game and you know, you gotta, you just gotta finish ’em. You just really gotta finish ’em.”

Maddening!

Penalties, mistakes, turnovers, consistent 1-posessiion losses, bad clock management… common denominator = coaching

  4. Hopes on 2027 Says:

Conditioning is often under-estimated and called things like killer instinct or even momentum. But if you get tired too fast, you’ll look weak and like you’re not trying once you’re out of gas.

  5. Hodad Says:

We got to GM it better, HC it better. Hopefully next season. This year we’re being lead into the wilderness.

Lol! Again.. tampa beats carolina they’re right back in it!! GO BUCS!
Penalties = players getting beat! In coverage, off the line
    Mistakes= again the players
Turnovers = players ..did I really have to say it!!
1 position loss = players making the plays
Clock Management = you got that one
    1 out of 5 …No not a common denominator…

  8. MadMax Says:

Turtle todd has alzheimer’s or something….completely get away from what was working the first half when we’re up….and, oh yeah, TE OVER THE MIDDLE, that Darnell Washington got us, lol. Its over already, just hoping the kitties put a bullit in our head to get this train running to the #1 pick…(so we can trade down and build)

  9. 813bucboi Says:

    Disagree with bowles…..

“killer instinct” starts at the top….Owners, GM, Coaches….

players take on the personality of their HC….bowles is laid back and relaxed, so the players follow suit…they come out flat because thats how they’ve been practicing….no sense of urgency because bowles doesnt have a sense of urgency….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  10. Fire The Cannons & Fire Todd Says:

Crazy, they have the same issues EVERY year under Todd and he still is here.

Why do I still care? Ugh

  11. Steve V Says:

Phucking Turnovers! Period! You cant score if you turn the ball over!!
    Demoralizing!
Gassing the defense when they should be closing the game out!
    Its not brain surgery
    Blame this guy that guy?
    Team Sport
    Oh.yeah stay healthy..

  12. Mac10 Says:

The long term problems with the team lies on ownership decision making.

Lets look at all their head coaches hired and my ratings:

    Raheem Morris – Below average
Greg Schiano – Magnificently below average
Lovie Smith – Pathetically below average
    Dirk Koetter – Below average
Bruce Arians – Average (got lucky getting TB 12)
Todd Bowles – Magnificently below average

You clowns fired Gruden who was at least an average coach.

You might want to deflect your underachievement to the team managers and front office, but then who hired them?

Time for you to get your act together, or better still sell the team.

  13. Lt. Dan Says:

    Open letter to team Glazer:
I get it – I am owed nothing. I’ve been supporting this team since its’ inception in 1976. I have never been more frustrated and finished with this dumpster fire than I am now. I am waiting for sanity to prevail but it doesn’t. Everyday I check multiple websites hoping that Coach Bowles and most, if not all of his staff is let go. The team quit caring and that is a reflection and mirroring of this coaching staff. Here is the daily refrain from your head coach. “I need to self reflect. I need to look at me. We need to be better. We need to coach better. We need to play better. We need to communicate better. We need to tackle better. etc. etc. etc.” Every. D@mn. Day! This team is losing fans. Fix it Glazers. Please!

  14. Newbie Says:

Broken record. How about Team Glazer showing a killer instinct and do what should have been done already… Regime change! Get rid of this mediocrity….. Hell we are not even mediocre. Enough already.

  15. SkunkApe Says:

We got to own it better… Like firing your head coach when it’s clear he’s done. Why is Bowles still here?

  16. Citrus County Says:

A search of Bowles office would likely turn up a book entitled “NFL Coaching for Dummies”.

The painful fact for Bowles is this; He just doesn’t have IT.

There is no shame in that. Few men have what it takes to be an NFL Head Coach. The owners have let this show continue far too long. They should have recognized this long ago and helped to protect Todd’s dignity. Their negligence and incompetence have directly assisted in helping this man make a fool of himself. That’s on them.

  17. GMC hater Says:

At this point I have completely embraced the tank, might as well keep Bowles until the end of the season.

  18. BucU Says:

To the Glazers and Jason Licht >>>>[🖕]

  19. Jjuice32 Says:

Playoff lenny said it all, coached by a soft mfer ur team will be soft AF. Joe’s, how many times have u guys and the fanbase said that this team is soft as Charmin! Glazers should take a look at how the other pro teams in TB r run and try and mimic. Neither is the laughing stock of their leagues.

  20. Citrus County Says:

    has – not – have

Grammar 101 is slowly escaping this old boy.

  21. ModHairKen Says:

Where was the killer instinct on the OT? You got soft, Bowles. And Rodgers made you look like a buffoon.

Don’t tell us about anything about killer instinct when you played vanilla cooter boy defensive scheme in OT.

    Done with this!

  22. LakelandSteve Says:

I am confused at the comments about we need a new GM. It’s not a player procurement problem it’s a coaching problem. Licht is a good GM and has had some very good drafts. No GM hits on every player every draft but Licht has done a good job bringing players in who are talented. I don’t expect the Glazers to fire the GM just the coach.

  23. Bosch Says:

This is a perfect example of Bowels’ lack of accountability and leadership. This team lacks a killer instinct, but as he’d coach that is completely helpless because only the players that must make this cultural change. Therefore it is not his responsibility.

We’ll tell us coach. Just what ARE you responsible for?

A leader who doesn’t believe that cultural change starts with the man in the mirror, is no leader at all.

Hall of Fame HC Tom Landry with Dallas stood on the sidelines with an almost expressionless face and an impassive demeanor. He led his team to 20 consecutive winning seasons, including two Super Bowl wins.

I have some serious issues with Bowles as HC, and I wish he’d been let go at the end of last season. But the criticism about his personality is ridiculous, IMO.

  25. King of Citrus Park Says:

Want to save your job, Coach. Pull up tape of the Broncos with Terrell Davis. Look at the running plays, sweeps and stretches behind great blocking WRs. Get them in the book. You got Godwin and Ebuka, physical dudes to add to a run blocking scheme. Davis shredded teams in that offense.

  26. Citrus County Says:

The role of President within the Tampa Bay Buccaneers front office is currently held by Atul Khosla, who serves as President, Chief Commercial Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Marketing Officer, and Chief Business Officer. Historically, Darcie Glazer Kassewitz has served as Co-Owner/President, representing the Glazer family’s executive leadership.

    ^^^^^^^

Atul Khosla. A name that is never mentioned. ?????????????

  27. Tucker Says:

You guys are missing the whole point bucs don’t care about wins when they got culture oh and the glazers really like bowels a bonus you didn’t even ask for but you get it anyway so silly to worry about the record when we already won with culture.

  28. Citrus County Says:

Can’t blame it all on Jason Licht.

  29. Dr Says:

Envision any other profession where millions of dollars are at stake, and the leader repeatedly fails and offers platitudes in response. Most Boards of Directors would fire a CEO at this stage. No credibility. No accountability. Just a dirty old f@rt who transformed the B-U-C-S into his J-E-T-S.

The Glazers cannot spin it – the mix of fans in attendance shows that.

The real question is whether Jason Licht falls on the same sword. Given how strongly he endorsed this team and the contract extensions, the owners must be evaluating all options.

He holds a BS in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. His career includes roles as COO for LIV Golf, Chief Corporate Development Officer for the Buccaneers, and COO for the Chicago Fire Soccer Club. He resigned from LIV Golf in late 2022 after less than a year, before returning to the Buccaneers in a senior commercial role.

  32. ProffeserVonBrainStorm Says:

Haven’t seen much of Lakeland and Floormatt lately. Miss those geniuses.

Just gotta finish em better. Classic! Bowles has an answer for everything.

Except for how to win games. We will never be rid of him.

The lone win will get him another extension and a raise.

KC might trade Andy Reid straight up for Bowles. Licht would pass on it.

  33. Arn Platz Says:

He’s like Rod munch on a date, makes no sense when he talks, lifeless, emotionless and completely clueless.

  34. Citrus County Says:

“Take the Money and Run” is a hit single by the Steve Miller Band, released on April 26, 1976, and featured on their album Fly Like an Eagle. Written by Steve Miller, the song tells the story of two young bandits, Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue, who rob a house in El Paso, shoot the owner, and flee south while being pursued by detective Billy Mack.

  35. Tampa 3 Says:

Yesterday, Bowles was asked on SiriusXM NFL Radio what the team must do to start winning tough games.

“It’s really just a killer instinct at the end,” Bowles said. “We gotta find ways to win the game at the end.

No! So a killer instinct is all that is needed. You have to literally do something.
    Make adjustments, better play calling.

  36. Thomas Edrington Says:

Talk, any talk from Bowels is CHEAP!!!

  37. Kwame Richardson Says:

Exactly what we are totally lacking. Go Bucs.

  38. Irishmist Says:

He coaches not to lose. So his players play the same way.

  39. BucsFan2023 Says:

According to Coach Bowles the team has no killer instinct. Circling back to 3rd and 28 (which cost the Bucs a division championship) how is a defensive player supposed to have killer instinct when the coach has him lined up ten yards off the ball and pedaling backward as the pass is thrown?

  40. Buc1987 Says:

    1-6 is coming!

  41. Ballwin Bucs Fan Says:

when you have a lead late, the other team is going to become one dimensional and pass all the time. the best way to counter that is with a PASS RUSH. as long as the Bucs don’t prioritize a PASS RUSH, they will be unable to close out games.

  42. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

I don’t really care about the killer instinct part, just score more than 20 points and try to take better advantage of the opportunities our defense is still giving our offense.

An A’Shawn Robinson INT puts you at the Steeler 36, you’ve got to get 7 and not settle for 3. Our offense is DOA every Sunday, maybe we should play the rest of our games on Thursday night.

  43. Saskbucs Says:

    Bowles personality is a problem!

Not for every facet of his job. Wanna stand on the sidelines like a cigar store Indian every game, fine I guess.

Players love having a friend as their HC, I’m sure all of us would have liked for our parents to just be our friends all the time. That’s not what makes people better. Accountability, discipline, a kick in the rear or benching are required at times.

I know some of you like to believe that millionaire players should be able to self motivate all the time and just need to execute. Not how it works. They are all human beings who have things going on in their lives, in the locker room. A HC needs to help wrangle that.

Finally we have former players saying that what Bowles does with the DL doesn’t work, that when he yells, players can tune it out cause he’s their fun uncle and no real consequences to poor play or poor coaching are doled out during the year.

It’s an absolute embarrassment. I’ve said for years on here that confidence and killer instinct is instilled by the HC. He tried it out once this year by going for 7 in Dallas, of course because he’s a bad HC, his timing was all wrong and he botched it.

“We are gonna sit back and play coverage, we aren’t gonna get beat deep, we are gonna run the ball!”

    These are loser mentality traits!

“We are gonna play tight coverage and put the QB on his a**, we are gonna be aggressive and adaptable, we are gonna move the sticks on 1st and 2nd down, go on 4th inside the 40, go for 2 and not let Mahomes or Allen have the ball, etc, etc.”

Bowles is the loser, we have seen it time and time again for 5 seasons. Stoic on sideline fine, the rest of it is garbage. Killer instinct only from the players, coached it as best we can…. Loser.

  44. StormyInFl Says:

This clown of a head coach coaches scared and has been doing so since he took over.

This idiot took the ball out of Brady’s hands vs the Browns… because he was afraid something bad might happen. His words.

And now he wonders why his team doesn’t have a killer instinct? Maybe because you don’t, Todd. Every damn time he gets a lead, he wants to sit on it rather than bury his opponent. That happened again Sunday. Offensive and defense were nerfed – that approach came from him, guaranteed.

  45. Winny Testaverde Says:

With GLP-1 in his system, and nut brown shoe polish in his hair…J-Licht is no longer intimidating whatsoever. Throw in the fact that he’s paid out many o’ declining players…it’s a killer time instead amongst the loafers @ One Buc Place.

  46. Dlavid Says:

Juice 32 … you said it brother !

  47. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Pull up tape of the Broncos with Terrell Davis. Look at the running plays, sweeps and stretches behind great blocking WRs. Get them in the book.”

Who was the HC that was the Broncos coach, and what coaching tree these days gets all the credit in the world for being students of the Broncos HC when Terrell Davis was doing this.

Also, what’s with this fan notion that causes some of you to speak as if coaches are puppeteers?

  48. Ra'Shad Says:

I’ve been talking about the lack of killer instinct since mike got his last 1K against the saints. There is no reason why we should be in a dog fight when all we have to do is win the game and we win the division. You come out the gates slapping anyone who stands in the way. I’m over it. I like Bowles but it’s time to go. He gotta go.

  49. jimmy Says:

a few days ago bowles and the team starts gaslichting everyone with the talking point about “quarters of the season” and how it was ok, they had moved on and were focused on the next quarter, cant do anything about the first quarter yada yada. a few of them repeated the talking point, propogating todd’s travelling excuse of the week roadshow.

before that it was baker with the pushback about playoffs, not playoff time yet, nothing to worry about (they were 0-2) and bowles about how it only matters that they were still in the playoff hunt with other stupid comments

““I feel like [the playoffs] won’t be determined until the end of the season,” Bowles said. “I think if you lose the first two games of the year, that doesn’t determine the other 15 games.”

    uh wrong. fatally wrong attitude.

the bucs think and thought that “winning” was already done and all they had to do was show up and the W’s would follow along, the other teams would roll over, and they could say or do whatever they wanted and they would win the division.

    everythings fine.

    nothing to worry about.

    idiots.

  50. Obvious Says:

These sports reporters have some nerve asking the head coach of a football team how he manages to instill the traits he thinks the team needs to win football games.

Goodness, didn’t you hear him? Or didn’t you read his words? “We have to stop making mistakes”….”we have to develop a killer instinct”…..”you have no margin for error.” – it’s all right there. He’s done his job.

No need for an edge rush – not in Todds job description
Clock management – not in Todds job description
Horrible pass defense – not in Todds job description
Horrible offense – not in Todds job description
Awful ‘25 special teams blunders that cost several wins – not in Todds job description
3rd and 28 – not in Todds job description

He has done his job, okay! Sit back and appreciate it.

  51. Marine Buc Says:

You gotta have that killer instinct.

You need to have that “eye of the tiger”.

You have to pound dat rock!

    QB/Simmons/DT?

Crazy to say QB after paying Baker? NO
    The math actually makes sense.
    Baker needs the incentive.

Simmons is a game wrecker, who cares he is hurt now.
DT has been a weakness since Suh left. Vea helped, but needed more than what Kancey has brought. Size does indeed matter my friends.

  54. Permanently Moderated Says:

Bowles is amazing. I wish I could make his type of money without being responsible for anything that happens.

  55. Mark Says:

The Bucs perfectly instantiate this quote.

“History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.”

First saw it in the 80s and 90s, then in the decade of darkness, and now in the Age of Bowles.

Absurdity and incompetence, compounding each other, year after year.

  56. Rob Says:

This is a pretty lackluster reply from Bowles. Good teams don’t stay close and find a way to finish… they beat the snot out of the other team for four quarters.

I like Todd Bowles, but teams take on the personality of their coach, and unfortunately the lack of killer instinct is coming from the top.

  57. Obvious Says:

    Billy –

I would hope all options are open. If we have a top 5 pick, you could end up with Mestemaker, Trinidad, Mensah, Simmons or Smith.

If you think any of those QBs are game changers that can 1) push Mayfield to play better under a new offensive HC, and 2) take over in ’28 and be the guy the next decade plus – it’s a no brainer.

And both Simmons and Smit are no brainers themselves.

  58. Pops Malone Says:

Forget the fact that his “creative blitzes” don’t work, forget the fact that Bowles fails miserably in game management, see inside final 2 minutes of the first half against Pittsburgh, (I am glad this was addressed on the most recent Ira Kaufman podcast by one of the Joe’s), and forget the fact his most recent offensive coordinator hire makes Arthur Smith look like a points scoring genius…….I can’t tell Bowles is breathing half the time when I see him. That zero energy he brings is now baked in to his team and they have zero energy and play like it. Soon he will be gone thank god. Go hang out with your buddy Arians…….what were these owners thinking, what a train wreck of a season…pathetic.

I agree with you. This kind of personality talk is nonsense. No one commenting knows what he’s really like behind closed doors. In fact, the Raise the Flags documentary gave us a peek to what he’s really like and I wouldn’t call it laid back and relaxed.

  64. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

“There is nothing more that we as coaches can do”. How in the world did he keep his job after that statement?

It’s over and done. Time for new blood, new voice, better attitude, more “killer instinct”.

We need a less complicated D with an aggressive offensive HC! Change is coming.

  65. Bucks 'n' Bucs Says:

    Killer Instinct…..help me here.

If you are aggressive and use exotic blitzing, aren’t you trying to panic the quarterback into throwing the ball quickly? And hopefully inaccurately? Then playing your coverage 5-10 yards back is kind of counter productive, right? Letting the receivers just step into the area just vacated by your blitzing defeats the purpose, right?

  66. Rob Says:

If you watched any episodes of this years Hard Knocks, you’ll see the difference a coach makes in setting the culture. Mike McDonald gets it and Bowles clearly does not.

  67. 76 replay Says:

    They got their BAG.

  68. Jim Says:

I wish I had a dollar for all the articles online and printed about how great they were going to be. O line is just garbaging up their every game.

There isn’t a shred of accountability. There isn’t a winning level of coaching. Winning the NFC South for a couple years with middling win/loss records just prolongs the decision that will send Bowles packing and all the coaches.

A new coach with some force and credibility that will actually inspire some confidence in players – e. g. excellent game plans suited to skillsets players have, demonstrated record of making halftime adjustments, and a few more that are key to winning in the NFL. Tampas Bay needs a guy who can’t be schooled by players and opposing coaches. Bowles seems to suffer from both – and has for years..

LIcht needs to start doing his job and getting ready to find a new coach. The ownership has to learn and make decisions that get the resources to win. I think it’s a bunch of brothers? If they seek consensus all the time that might be one of the reasons the Glazers aren’t more aggressive and attentive in doing the things they need to do.

  69. Bucslosecoverthestadium Says:

Yeah but if the players don’t take the coach seriously( per playoff Lenny) then what’s the point? So he is the coach yet takes on no responsibility of the coach. What does he add to the equation? Teflon todd is outwitting everyone. He actually got an extension. For this. Maddening. Players are leaderless in this organization. Imagine why they only want to get paid. A bad boss/coach can ruin so much. It’s a 3-28 Bucs life.

  70. Bucscoott Says:

Trade Baker to the Eagles for a Philly sandwich

  71. Arn Platz Says:

The last time I remember the Bucs having a killer instinct was when Sapp, Brooks and Lynch were terrorizing offenses in the late 90’s early 2000’s. I credit Monte Kiffin, Rod Marrinelli and Mike Tomlin. They were like sharks on the field, could easily smell blood and go into a frenzy. Very dangerous team in those days. Truly missing that. Caught glimpses and flashes of it when we had Suh and JPP.

  72. SBucs Says:

Lack of killer instinct? Yes, that sums up Todd up really well. Players take on the personality of their coaches. Todd has no passion, no heart, is a terrible game time manager so players play to the please their coach. I just hope that the rookies can clear the Todd stench before they start to regress into messes.

  73. Capt.Tim Says:

    lol.
They aren’t losing because they lack a killer instinct.

They are losing, because they are a bad team.
They are a bad team, with no money left.

The good Vets on the team are all aging. They do NOT want to spend their last years babysitting a young team.
They are not gonna be good in Tampa anymore.
Trade them. Free up money, get draft picks.

A new Coach doesn’t want disgruntled old guys
He wants draft picks, and money to bring in HIS GUYS.

Any of you crying about trading good players, can’t of watched the garbage I’ve seen.

Talking about lack of a killer instinct as the problem is really dumb. We lost TOP by eight minutes. That is DOA.

  75. Tom in Madtown Says:

Insane is more like it. Doing and saying the same thing over and over, but expecting a different outcome. Insanity. It’s time to stop the Crazy Train!!!

Bowles needs to get tough on the offense. How about the next time someone has a false start, they get a free trip to the bench for a series or two. Pre-snap penalties continue to plague this team. That’s discipline. That’s mentality.

If Playoff Lenny is right and Bowles isn’t spending enough time with the offense or holding them to the same level of accountability, he should be fired NOW!

Geez anyone who read this piece would want to fire that cannon. Imagine shelling out the $ TB must get paid. And he has no answers?!?!?!?

“it’s not a coach thing”?? talk about lack of accountability and awareness. Who was the last person he truly coached up? defensive minded, creative genius who is a below 500 coach. He may be a great guy. He may be likable as a friend, coach or whatever. But he is NOT a good coach. Good Coaches drive or pull the best out of players.

So many great comments here about Todd’s answers in many interviews over the last two seasons. It really is insane he kept his job after saying there was no more he or the coaches could do. He tossed his players and many of the coaches that were canned right under the bus while shielding himself to a degree. Then he keeps his job (a minor miracle in itself), brings in several new players and some new coaches and it’s the same results and he’s saying the same thing.
I realize that 1) Todd probably gets it and understands it’s over or 2) doesn’t actually get it, which is a whole other problem in and of itself. Either way he’s not going to or capable of speaking the truth. Which is that he’s so far in over his head, doesn’t understand the modern game and the modern players and he doesn’t know the first thing about how to turn it around because in his mind he’s told them what to do. It should be that simple, to him. He doesn’t understand interpersonal dynamics to the degree this job requires. Or processes, motivation, attention to detail or management in general.

He fooled the family for half a decade. At least he was shrewd enough to do that. I couldn’t manage this team or trick the owner

What’s frustrating is that so many of us saw it from 4m miles away. You would never see Kyle shannahan or Coen or any of the other younger coaches in the league giving those answers. They way too shrewd for that.

I hope the Glaxrrs are conducting their coaching search already. Just read where the Colts have probably started their search for both a GM and a HC and that Steichen was not fired with the Colt GM because there is no interim on his staff. Sound familiar? Chargers also as inept as Bowles’ Bucs. Jets and New Orleans also could be looking. Good chance Bucs’ job will not be the most desireable. Glazers should have hired Monken last January when he interviewrd and launched Bowles. Time for the paper bags fellow Buc fans. Fire Zac, fire Bowles. Shame on the Glazers for being such tools.
