Explains short passing.
For the second week in a row, the Bucs were a short-pass offense, specifically to running backs.
In Week 1, the Bucs did this, very likely because, as Joe pointed out two weeks ago, the Bengals had the worst defense stopping screen passes in 2025.
And it seems like past tape determined how the Bucs would attack the Browns. The Bucs offense was borderline anemic today with short passes to running backs.
Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell combined for eight targets. They combined for six yards receiving.
With receivers like Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka, going to the short game with running backs as targets and getting virtually zero production is shameful.
But it appears from Bucs coach Todd Bowles, this was predetermined prior to the game.
“It was something they were giving us on tape,” Bowles said.
OK. Tape is one thing. To the best of Joe’s knowledge, offenses are allowed to adjust when the results aren’t there.
But it seems even Bowles was getting fed up with no production from dinking and dunking. Late in the game, the Bucs were throwing the ball downfield. Part of the reason was they didn’t have much of a choice. But Bowles said he wanted to be more aggressive, too.
“You are not going to get it just going putt, putt, putt, putt, putt, putt, so we took a shot at some passes,” Bowles said.
Joe sure wishes Bowles would have felt the same way in the first half.

Our left guard and center are so bad, Baker has no time to set his feet and get comfortable into a rhythm passing game. It’s very apparent that most of the pressure is coming at him head on. Last week it was Allen, this week it was Graham. Until we fix that, we will have the same problems getting our offense going. I truly think that is the biggest thing holding us back, the play calling isn’t even that bad it’s just execution

THIS was my exact thought today, even BEFORE the game and for during the ‘Lightning’ Delay (that I also called-out yesterday LoL). That, we have a HC that has not been capable of ADJUSTING. Then, sure enough I head HIM make those comments during HIS postgame press conference. Because, That’s What We s Saw On THE TAPE. Unbelievable. I mean, when HE doesn’t even get-it and is totally oblivious HIMSELF, I mean… SHEW. It really is THAT BAD. Though, the FO and Owners, literally SCREWED US Forrrrr YEARS!!!!

None of this makes any sense. The screen passes weren’t working so they went to a deep passing attack with a QB bad at throwing deep. Um OK, not a great plan. We’ve seen Baker for years be terrible at 10+ yard passes consistently. He can’t push the ball downfield so they want to get it to shifty guys in space. If they get room to run, its for a 2 yd gain.
The offense can only be as good as its QB. The constant holding the ball, looking to run and overthrows are stalling the offense. Thanks for nothing Glazers.

Zac put Baker in a position to win the game on 4th down – and Baker missed what is an easy throw for an NFL QB.
Zac schemed up plays where the Bucs had WR’s running open deep – and Baker kept missing the throws.
I agreed that they have to not throw so much behind the line of scrimmage, but when Baker is asked to throw beyond the LOS, he’s extremely inaccurate. The single deep ball Baker hit was because he slipped prior to the throw.

I know I can’t be the only one but I am disappointed and straight pissed. I been watching this team since 96 and I just don’t get how you didn’t see all this last year and make proper changes this past offseason. Instead you fire everyone except you keep Bowles. It’s starts with him and Licht yet they are still here. Got to cut off the head of the snake for real change to be made. I hope ownership starts to get it. Not sure what it’s going to take but this season is wasted and so is our time as Bucs fans with this garbage.

It’s frustrating but consistent that Bowles coached teams play down to their competition. Waiting for him to finally coach up our team or at least get us to play to the talent their talent level. I have fading hope he can get the team to the playoffs. Zero belief he’s capable of coaching a team to a super bowl.

Trying to push the ball upfield puts our offense and ability to maintain possession of the ball puts us at greater risk, that is until teams start jumping those underneath routes too. Imagine that, lining up calling a screen and before the ball hits the mark it’s being taken to the house. Through 2 games, we’re setting ourselves up for catastrophe.
Did you guys know, even with Evans last year we called screens on 17% of our drop backs in the first 6 games last year? It ranked 2nd in the NFL in terms of frequency. When Mike got hurt, the respect he drew as a deep threat vanished which allowed teams to pick their matchups and dictate to our offense who they were going to allow us to beat them with. Problem is, we kept spamming the same WR to very limited effect.

Yeah, but most importantly they had 7 catches on those 8 attempts, so it helps boost Baker’s competition percentage!
In fact Baker’s excellent passer rating today was 73.4 — which is better than the career average of Trent Dilfer, who won a SB!
So all we need is an all-time great defense and the Bucs are in great shape!

I said in the offseason the Bucs should trade Baker to the Browns, they could totally rake them over the coals, get Garrett, a couple of 1st, and throw in Sanders – that I’d take my chances with Sanders, some vet option, perhaps spending a draft pick on a QB, I’d take that over being stuck with Baker on a terrible long term contract.
Hopefully I still turn out to be wrong, but so far… yikes.

I wanted the Bucs to keep White, I’ve always thought he was way undervalued.
With that said, White was the one who didn’t want to return. White has a very unhealthy obsession with Jayden Daniels. I mean it got pretty uncomfortable with how much White talked about his love of Jayden, and how he desired to play with him. Plus White took a cheap deal to do so. Makes me wonder…
But it stinks since White was easily the best non-OL blocker on the team once Ko got hurt, and it’s been that way for years. Plus he’s literally the best pass catching RB in NFL history (that’s what the stats show, the competition percentage when throwing to him is incredible – best in NFL history).

Breaking news, Hurst isn’t a future HOFer – at least not in his 2nd game in the NFL. That was a contested circus catch with a guy committing pass interference, a play that probably is caught 5-10% of the time.
Regardless, Baker had a guy wide open to win the game on 4th down, an easy throw and catch, and missed it.

The talent evaluation on this team is questionable. It’s either that or the coaching stinks. Probably both. The game plans are lazy, the in game adjustments non existent. I said Baker threw a good ball there, it was in the right spot, and the defender was right on top of the receiver, interfering with Hurst before the ball got there, and it was heavily contested. That is not a TD in the vast majority of circumstances, but it is DPI in most cases. But to assume Hurst is supposed to play at a HOF level and make that catch because Evans does is an absurd standard for a 3rd round pick in his 2nd game and doesn’t let Baker off the hook for missing a wide open WR on 4th down, on a simple NFL throw and catch.

I called for Bowles to be fired a bunch of times, in particular after 2024. I too wanted Coen to say, said the Bucs should break the stupid Rooney rule, then sue the NFL over that policy, and just flat out hire Coen without going through the dumb hiring process nonsense which would have let Coen interview with other teams before the Bucs could have locked him up.
People seem to think because I said Bowles shouldn’t have been fired this offseason – that it was some sort of endorsement – it wasn’t.
What I said was don’t fire Bowles this last offseason, because you were not going to get any good coaching candidates with Baker coming off an awful season. I said wait until AFTER this season to fire Bowles since you’d either have Baker coming off a good year, and you could get a top candidate – OR if Baker is terrible, you could just do a rebuild, and get a coach coming in with a blank slate.
But the Glazers meddled at the last second, demanded a deal get done with Baker, and screwed up all those plans. No good coach is going to want to be here if Baker doesn’t dramatically improve. At the same time, if Baker is playing dramatically better, then the Bucs – still in the NFC South – are probably winning, and Bowles probably isn’t getting fired.
Finally, there is the fact that Baker has been horrific since the Rams game – the only exception in that time that you could make is probably game 17 last season vs the Panthers where he was fine. If Baker was just a middling middle of the road QB over these last 10 games, the Bucs are probably 8-2 over their last 10, and would have made the playoffs, and who knows what happens. But Baker has been mostly trash over that span, and deserves to bashed by all. Anyone defending Baker’s play over that span has no credibility.

I agree with BucsFan81: disappointed & pissed after my 35 years of Bucs watching. I’ve never been a Bowles or Baker basher. I think they’re both good people, husbands and fathers. They likely would be fun to have a beer with.
HOWEVER, here is the absolute damning evidence that this team needs serious changes, from the top down.
1. Bucs are 2-9 since their 6-2 start — which was mainly due to 4 unlikely last minute wins. That’s on Bowles, Baker, the D, and 2025 special teams.
2. This might be the most damning and illustrative thing I’ve heard since the 2020 season, right up there with ME13’s scathing comments upon leaving. When the teams were returning to the field after the lightning delay, the CBS sideline reporter told us (paraphrasing) that the Browns were laughing & loose coming out, while the Bucs were grim & quiet!!! WTF. If that doesn’t tell you, me & the Glazers what the primary problem is then I give up. Go Bucs.

It is the opinion of some die hard fans that Mayfield is injured again.They point to the fact that he cannot throw the ball more than 7-12 yards down the field. Overthrown and underthrown passes sail wildly over the field as there is no accuracy of his throws. This was evidenced by the TD pass thrown to Ebuka which was behind him. The last pass on 4th down to end the game sailed wildly away from the receiver. If he is hurt, most people hope that he will heal soon..
But if he is not injured, the fault has to be that the team is not doing the necessary work to prepare each week to win ball games in the NFL. The team needs to do heavy self-scouting work this week to find out who is performing and who is not..
Unlike some of the comments above, it is not yet time to push the panic button yet. The season can be salvaged before they decide to enter the Arch Manning sweepstakes……

Thennnn, in the 2028 Draft you can start thinking about POUNCING on your QB (the 2028-class is going to be LOADED, too), after everyone else had already taken THEIRS in this 2027-Class… You can have the pick of the litter, and after also having a ‘FULL-YEAR’ to REBUILD. THE. ROSTER. FIRST. And, before the ‘countdown clock’ has to begin on his ‘rookie-level’ contract (could even wait until 2029, it doesn’t really matter anyway… you’re NOT ‘contending’ that quick, and maybe, your new-age modern day young STUD HC/Play-Caller, caught ‘lightning-in-a-bottle’ with his “bridge”). And, you don’t have to just throw him straight to the wolves with that mostly depleted roster either, and then RUIN HIM. You should have PLENTY of Draft-Capital left by then as well, if you did it right! Then, you have the 2028 Free-Agency Period, to make a couple of calculated moves, AND a few others, via TRADE… For either/or, or both, more TALENT (&/or) future PICKS. And, then the 2029 Free Agency Period, is where you REALLY LOAD TF UP after making strides in 2028. The ‘franchise’ would be SET UP for LONGTERM, for sustained success. That, there is really, no reason to even worry about it or cate anymore. Because, another “Lost Decade” is now ‘officially’ in-play, and is a REAL legit, not ‘possibility’ but PROBABILITY. And, that our odds of that happening, have now DRASTICALLY IMPROVED. If this actually happened, do you think they’d stand by and let Arch come to a team with a boat anchor around its neck with Baker’s deal being completely immoveable?
I don’t think the Bucs will be that bad – to be sure. But if they were, not only would it be almost impossible to find a good coach to take the job, I think top college QBs would boycott the team as well since they wouldn’t want to be in a situation where they had to be around Baker – in particular with his history of pouting when he’s got legit competition at QB.

Day in Tampa Bay. Missed tackles everywhere, zero killer instinct, awful situational football, and a coaching staff that looked completely incapable of adjusting once Cleveland punched back. You don’t blow a second-half lead at home while controlling the run unless the execution and coaching both fail miserably.
And the worst part? CLEVELAND delivered the daggers. 🗡️🗡️🗡️ We didn’t just lose, we handed them the knife and showed them exactly where to stick it. This one hurts. I hope the Minnesota game is blacked out for the sanity of our mental and emotional wellbeing.

I’m just wondering if he’s actually taken his ‘physical’ yet, AND ‘signed’ that contract. I mean, IF they didn’t require HIM to have to pass a physical, in the very least (cause I have not heard ANYTHING about it)… Then, that just makes it even that much more MIND-BOGGLING to me. The whole entire thing over “THIS GUY” (really, “this guy”), is just completely UNFORGIVABLE. It was an UNFORCED ERROR, that was just totally UNNECESSARY, in every way imaginable. I mean, NOTHING about it made ANY sense. 3-10 now, in HIS last 13-STARTS. So, there is no reason to constantly say EVERY single day now, that we need a new COACH, a new GM, a new QB, DRAFT a QB, & etc. Cause, IT’S OVER. DONE. Well I did say I do NOT think that is going to happen.
I’m not giving up the season and talking draft in week 2.
People need to chill out.
At the same time, IF that was to happen, it means Baker’s play continued at an incredibly poor level, and then the Bucs would be in a terrible situation of being tied to an awful QB for a long time with no way to get out of it – and there is no way to get out of the deal, they can’t afford to trade or cut Baker, IF this was the outcome.
But again, it’s week 2, chill out everyone.
And by that, I mean call out Baker for being a bum – and hope that Baker getting ‘disrespected’ actually triggers him to play well and not ruin the season.
