End Of Roster Days For Chris Braswell

Chris Braswell needs a minor miracle to not be cut on Sunday.
That giant “B-word” is about to hang around the young edge rusher’s neck like an Olympic medal.
The Buccaneers’ second-round draft pick in 2024 failed to impress last season and the Bucs ran out and signed Al-Quadin Muhammad (11 sacks for Detroit last season) and drafted Miami Mauler edge rusher Rueben Bain in Round 1. Plus, the team gushed openly about the eagerly-awaited return of David Walker, the edge rusher who had never played a snap.
That was the writing on the wall for Braswell, who did nothing this summer to improve his lot.
Flashing a handful of times in practice in second- and third-team duty doesn’t count. And Braswell is not a strong special teams player.
Buccaneers super insider, broadcaster, team website contributor and legend Rondé Barbersaid on his WFLA streaming show yesterday that he believes Braswell will not make the roster when the Bucs cut to 53 players on Sunday evening.
The Bucs kept five edge rushers last season apparently will again: Bain, Muhammad, Walker, YaYa Diaby and Anthony Nelson.
“He’s hurt. It doesn’t help the situation,” Barber said of Braswell.
By Joe’s observation, Braswell didn’t practice at Jacksonville and didn’t travel there for practice. That doesn’t mean he’s ruled out for tomorrow night’s preseason finale.
If Braswell is cut, Joe is very curious to see whether he’s claimed on waivers by another team. Joe would expect that.
Surely there’s a general manager or two that was smitten with Braswell during the 2024 draft process.

Some GMs will say “Just another Licht second round bust. Not interested.” Others will say “Bowles is known for ruining promising players. Let’s give him a shot.” So, yes it will be interesting.

Jason needs to trade all his second round picks away for players on other rosters, like the aj brown or dj moore trades. That round in the draft is like a black hole for him. Braswell, now joins mj stewart, logan hall, trask and the kicker, just to name a few.

A different team. Houston seems like a good fit. I never liked the pick and it has been obvious he didn’t want to be here. I wish him the best. Do better Jason!

Last year we carried 5 safeties as well, Izien & Merriweather are gone and I’d be interested to see if we go with 5 at the position OR we dedicate that roster spot to OLB or CB. Haven’t heard much about Killbrew nor JJ Roberts. What is interesting however, is the build of safety we’ve been looking for. Right now we’ve got 4 guys on the squad at saftey at/above 6’2 which is a clear deviation from the smaller, more compact guys we’ve got starting at the position.
As an aside, AG & Pepe belong on this roster, but I wouldn’t be mad if we kept a 6th spot in the OLB room for Mo Kamara. Braswell has been an afterthought to me before the preseason started, and the most memorable moment I can recall is him getting rocked by a double team against the Jets.

Unfair to call Hall and Stewart busts.
Both played/are playing in the league past their first contract. (I could be off on Stewart but thought he was getting chances).
Are they what we wanted outta a second rounder, of course not, Stewart especially, Hall gave us a lot of snaps and didn’t produce much but didn’t embarrass himself either.
Interested to see if he can make an impact with the Texans vaunted D this season.

He’s on a guaranteed contract so the Bucs are on the hook whether they cut him or not. If the injury is anything more than a hangnail I wouldn’t be surprised to see them place him on IR just to do it all over again next year.
That’s his only path to sticking around. And the only sign Licht can give that he hasn’t washed his hands from Braswell yet.

Considering Licht’s defensive picks and Bowles development/defensive scheme, I honestly can’t tell what’s worse. Did Bowles say he had to have Braswell or did Licht suggest him? You can’t predict injuries but damn…they can’t find any consistent playmakers in the draft.

It’s not over for Morrison. Jeezus, give the kid a chance to play after healing up! He’s going into his second season here, his hammy situation is better now and he’s been practicing. Hopefully now he can stay healthy and we can see the capabilities he displayed at Notre Dame.
Sometimes it seems like posters here treat injuries as a character flaw. Crazy.

Both playing for Houston, Stewart was the 3rd safety on the depth chart last yr. Good pick, just didn’t work out for him with us and sometimes that’s alright.

Morrison wasn’t injured playing football, he had a hip defect. He needed corrective surgery, not surgery from an injury. Hope he has a career, but I doubt it. Damaged goods.

Most people here completely ignore that fact about him, just like the Bucs did. Whoever did the medical evals on Morrison dropped the ball. That they chose to draft someone who was dealing with a hip surgery recovery so high in the draft is stupefying.
That’s on Licht.
The kid has undeniably dealt with a lot of pain and done his best to recover – but it’s going to be a while until he’s not a question mark. All the missed time makes him more or less still a rookie in terms of development as we enter the regular season. The odds are long for him to be a major contributor to the Bucs defense, but hopefully he can be more than just another warm body this year.

Let him go! He can join JTS at WalMart or reclaim his career with someone else. This was a HUGE(!!!) blown #2 pick. Admit it and move on. In the big reckoning to inevitable come it should be remembered. I see TB and JL on the same bus out of town.

I was really thinking Braswell was going to take the next step. JTS is even better than him. What is going on with him? The tools are there but he can’t put it together for the Bucs. Maybe another team can get something out of him.

One note about missing out on OLB pass rushers taken after Braswell:
There weren’t any who’ve done demonstrably better at putting a QB on the ground. The 2024 draft just wasn’t deep with that kind of talent.
Braswell is a good lesson for people who draft for need instead of taking the best available. There was a total lack of talent for edge rushers after the first few came off the board. Licht made a pick out of desperation and this is how it turned out.

Yea, let’s start kicking these guys to the curb after a year if they have injuries or any struggles @ all. Then draft more and do it again. That’s a sound strategy 🙄.
Morrison absolutely needs to get in the mix this year. He’s a very talented corner and we need all of them we can get.

Some guys kick butt at the collegiate level and just don’t translate well to the NFL. Brasswell is one of those guys. I wish him luck. He had a couple of years to show us what he had. Time to move on. I wish him well.
