More Ammo, Agony For Vita Vea

Big No. 50 for Tampa Bay might be pacing his New Jersey hotel room tonight.
NFL Network is reporting defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, a guy who has never played in a playoff game, agreed to a three-year, $105.9 million contract extension. He’s now locked down for the next five seasons (including 2026).
Williams was drafted in 2019, one year after Vita Vea. Williams turns 29 this season; Vea will play the entire season at 31 years old. Williams was traded to Dallas by the Jets midway through last season, and the Cowboys liked what they saw. Williams, per NFL Network, will receive $101 million in guarantees.
Vea has no contract for next season and he’ll earn about $18 million this season, the final year of his four-year contract. He has demanded a trade because the Bucs won’t hook him up with enough cash and guarantees to make him happy.
A BSPN survey of dozens of coaches, scouts and executives released this summer ranked Williams a top-10 defensive tackle at No. 6 overall. Vea was out of the top-10 and listed as an honorable mention.
The Joe typing here at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters believes the Bucs will trade Vea before opening day. The other Joe thinks Team Glazer and Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht might sweeten Vea’s contract for 2026 because he is underpaid. Sage of Tampa Bay Sports Ira Kaufman says Licht and the Glazers won’t be pushed around.
BSPN super insider Adam Schefter is smelling a trade.
The Bucs will practice on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings against the Jets. Vea is expected to watch along the sidelines. He hasn’t practiced all spring and summer.

Big difference: Vita takes off 30% of the plays. Williams never stops. Solution: Pay Vita 30% less than Williams – guaranteed money.

Does nothing to vitas value at 15 dt in the league he is still slightly underpaid it’s like one or two dt tackles over 30 that make more than vita make him play out his contract and keep getting younger on the dline at the end of the season.

I’d get a deal done, Vita played the most snaps of his career last year, and as I’ve noted, he’s the type of player who is going to age well, since he can either lose weight to regain quickness, or just ballon up to sumo wrestler size and become a 2-down immovable object. Not saying to give him a 5-year deal, but I’d give him a 2-year extension at the money he wants (so with this year, 3-years total), with a final mutual option year.
But, if you’re not going to do pay that, and you know you’re not going to do it – then trade him NOW! He is not going to be worth more at the trade deadline – his max trade value is right now, and I think the Bucs can get at least a 2nd out of him, possibly even a bit more – and perhaps, maybe, if the Bucs add something to it like a 3rd or 4th, maybe you can get that up to a 1st rounder, amd maybe even a decent starter back as well (such as trading him to Buffalo might get you the young guy who started last year for them, he’s nothing special but would provide some depth).

Given Vea’s salary demands, I don’t see any way that the Bucs will re-sign him to any contract after this year that’d be satisfactory to Vea. The best way to ‘save face’ for all concerned IMO is to do what we can to get Vea back on the field for this season. If he knows that he’ll be FA after this season & won’t be re-signed by the Bucs, he’ll bust his butt to put his best performance on film.
I think Licht would be wise to talk to Vea, tell him flat out that we won’t re-sign him, nor will be trade him unless some team makes an offer that we simply can’t turn down (a Rnd 1 or Rnd 2 pick would be nice, with the trading team picking up Vea’s entire salary AND his Dead CAP after this year … only about $2.3 mil).
Barring a trade, I’d put some real nice incentives in there that’d raise Vea’s salary significantly IF he really performs well AND if the Bucs do well. After that … it’s Vea’s choice what happens this season.

WON’T BE SHOCKED IF …
1. The Bucs trade VV.
If DTs are suddenly so valuable, VV should pull in more than just one #2. Saying, “We’re not trading Vea,” just sets the price tag higher for a team that really wants him. Wait until a DT gets hurt on a contending team and they’ll get desperate. They may think a low #1 is the same as a #2. Then, it’s a no-brainer for the Bucs.
2. Vea gets hurt.
He’s not practicing. Guys that don’t practice get injured once he comes back. This hold-in could cost him a lot of dough.

Is age really an issue with his contract? Look at the ridiculous amount Godwin is making this year. Highest paid wr in the league, wrong side of 30, 2 major injuries.

Ugh… the comments. Look before you type. Williams on avg is probably 63-65% snaps. More recently, high 60’s low 70’s, just like our guy. I would take our 31 year old 350lb human door stop over Q any day, but if they are going to pay Vita, the price did go up. This team is teetering on the brink of Leeman Bennett territory is they don’t find a way to build some confidence soon. Letting Vea walk out the door, not good. Let’s face it, our Corners need help…. Vea on the line with the young guys could be seriously impactful. No Vea? Yeah, maybe Bain, Walker and Co plant some QB’s but when they don’t, it’s basically Captain Kirk Cousins 509 territory all day long.

That is literally, by far, the worst option available. Why in the world would you not pay him, not give an extension, and make sure he walks after the season and the Bucs get nothing out of it. And no, they won’t get a comp pick since they always sign people – you only get a comp pick if you don’t sign people AND the player signs a huge deal. The only reason you’d do nothing is if you think you got a SB team – and even in a very weak NFC, the Bucs are not a legit SB team.

The defense is absolutely putrid with him on the roster. He’s easily replaceable.
Worst red zone defense in the NFL means the entire side of the ball sucks.

It’s just a bad look.
Trade him or pay him.
NFL contract are complicated for sure. But the stars shouldn’t be a spread sheetz they should be a personal relationship.
When it gets to this level, the front office messed up.
Disgruntled employees might play for a contract form another team, but the one or two plays that make a season fo the team they are on, might not show in tape.
A star player , playing for a contract for another team, will do enough to make money but not enough to change a season for the current team.
Go watch Cam Newtown not dive for that ball and tell me I’m wrong.

I didn’t say NOT to pay him Rod; I said pay him in incentives. I seriously doubt that JL will cave to Vea’s demands for more money … MUCH more money. And trading him depends on finding a suitable trading partner, one who’s willing to write a new, much higher paying contract for Vea. Good luck with that.

Vea will sit out the pre season and then he will play in the regular season and he will play great because he wants another big contract (assuming the Bucs don’t give him a raise and/or extension).
The Bucs can depend on what they will get from Vea … an excellent NT who takes up 2 blockers and will allow Kancey, Bain,Diaby and perhaps Walker to wreak havoc. They can’t depend on what they’ll get from Mayfield…except Moxie.
Trading Vea away would deflate the team and coaching staff…and the Bucs will get fleeced.

Vea will play game 1. If he goes full “hold-out” he is going to have to pay back his signing bonus, fines, loss of accrued season and salary forfeiture per the CBA. He needs to practice and move on. The Glazers are not giving in.

Main reason for not signing baker and vea is that it gives the new coach next year a pretty clean slate. No big contracts on the books besides wirfs and Winfield. Freedom to spend and assemble his own team.

I can answer that:
• Give him his way, and it tells the other players that they can do the same thing when they reach a contract year.
• Vea waited so long to bring this all up because he WANTED to scr3w the Bucs over.
• If Vea holds out, he’ll spend a year not playing, and he’ll still be under contract.
• If the Bucs refuse to trade him and make him play this year, he’ll have to prove to the rest of the NFL that he is worthy of more money next year. That means playing more and playing at the top of his game. That would be worth more this season than a second round pick.
• If he gets injured this season, the rest of the league will see he’s injury prone and he won’t be able to get a good deal next year.

I love Vita. He’s my favorite player on this team. I also believe that Vita is the engine to this defense. That said, I’d give him a bump to maybe $21m or $22m for this season, then reassess his value going forward after the season. Worst case we will probably get a decent comp pick for him in 2028 if he walks. Don’t overpay, we have other younger talent to pay in the next few off seasons.
