“I Don’t Plan On The Bucs Being Trash”
June 27th, 2026
Former Bucs QB Chris Simms thinks Baker Mayfield is the NFL’s 10th-best quarterback. Longtime CBS NFL insider Pete Prisco just ranked Mayfield No. 16 at his position.
Joe thinks it’s fair to say that’s a legit range for Mayfield. He’ll likely fit somewhere between No. 10 and No. 16 come Week 1 of the 2026 season.
Is that good enough for the Buccaneers to extend Mayfield’s contract at market value? Six-time Bucs Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy thinks so.
In fact, McCoy thinks the Bucs would be making a major roll of the dice if they toss Mayfield aside for a 2027 rookie or a free agent.
“You want to have a guy that puts you in position to compete,” McCoy told Kyle Odegard of RotoGrinders.com. “If you get rid of Baker, who is that guy? The draft is full of question marks. I don’t care how good they were in college. That does not guarantee they will be good in the NFL.
“So if you get rid of Baker, who do you go get? Who is out there? If there’s a top (NFL) quarterback out there, that team is not going to let them go. And to get a good guy in the draft, you’ve got to be trash. I don’t plan on the Bucs being trash, so you might as well sign him. Let’s build this thing and see what happens.”
Like McCoy, Joe doesn’t plan on the Bucs being trash, either. This should not be a five- or six-win Tampa Bay team, and that’s exactly how many wins a team needed last year for a top-10 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
As discussed in detail on the Ira Kaufman Podcast, it’s hard to imagine Team Glazer would want to gamble on drafting or signing a new QB if they believe Mayfield is better than most NFL starters.
Say Team Glazer thinks Mayfield is the NFL’s 12th-best quarterback, would the owners really want to rebuild the entire club in hopes of finding the next Drake Maye? Hard to imagine, but so was Mike Evans kneeling before the alleged greatness that is Brock Purdy.

They kept Bowles so obviously, they plan on being trash. The “if not Baker then who” question is so stupid. There’s the draft and FA to find a good or better QB. The Rams traded for their MVP amd SB winning QB. The Ravens drafted Jackson at the end of the 1st round, so you don’t have to be terrible to find a good QB. Mahomes was drafted at pick 10.
So many people are scared the future won’t work out so they’d rather stick with what’s clearly not working. It hasn’t been working since Bowles got here and Baker is taking this team nowhere.
This team is overdue for change. And avoiding drafting a QB means you’re shopping for other teams QBs that they didn’t want. Not a good long term strategy.
June 27th, 2026 at 12:01 pm
Baker ain’t goin nowhere. He will take us to a superbowl as soon as the coaches and our GM have a team worthy of a superbowl. The coaches are the only thing keeping us from getting there. It’s like the Glazers said, we don’t mind writing a big check to keep Baker here.
June 27th, 2026 at 12:35 pm
You do not have to be trash to get a high pick , but you do have to be willing to make the trade to move into position to get that high pick. This is where Jason Licht does not have what it takes, Licht moved up once in his career and that was only 1 spot higher.
Bucs will wait and see what happens this season as they should , because shpuld the Bucs and Mayfield under perform again, Bowles and possibly Licht are gone. There is no guarantee that Sean McDermott or Mike Tomlin would come to Tampa if they are forced into having Licht as their GM , and would you pass on either of those two coaches so you can keep Licht? I think not.
June 27th, 2026 at 12:39 pm
This is basically what I said on the last Baker article thread. Name the Qb you want to replace him with. Some like Mac Jones. There’s probably gonna be a market for him if he makes it to free agency next year. 6-8 teams. If Jason really offers him a lot (30+m per year) you probably have about a 25% chance that he signs here. Another 50+% chance he flops again. Yes, I’m guessing on the chance percentage but it’s not gonna be much higher than I’m estimating. It’s just a risky move. If you can’t get him you’re forced to move up (Two 1st round picks) into the top 10 of the draft and pick whatever Qb falls to you. We all know that’s a coin flip too. One that long time Bucs fans know comes up snake eyes all too often.
June 27th, 2026 at 12:50 pm
In pure talent level Baker is top 5-9. It’s absolutely essential we sign him or the likelihood is we spend the next 20 years foundering around looking for a QB and never again finding one. Like the lost decade but longer. Many NFL franchises don’t even have a legit starter ^right now^ and we are considering letting ours get away?
Insane. Totally insane. I cannot help but think the people that keep suggesting this are fans of other teams and want him.
June 27th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
An injured Drake Maye was trash, too. Just help Baker with a solid run game and above average defense and he won’t have to pull so many stunts and get hurt. There’s no other game in town. Yet methinks they’ve offered Baker 55m over three years and he wants 60+ over five with most guaranteed, so I don’t know how they’ll square that circle.
June 27th, 2026 at 1:04 pm
Either that or they know nothing about football and are unable to judge talent. Like the posts the final straw keeps mentioning that in the ALL 22 it’s very obvious what was going on last year and it wasn’t Baker’s fault the vast majority of the time. Trust Ronde and Arians and their opinions if you aren’t informed enough to make your own.
June 27th, 2026 at 1:10 pm
As JBF doesn’t allow external links you’ll have to find it yourself, but there was spot on WDAE about chasing the next quarterback. To sum it up, of all the quarterbacks taken in the last 10 NFL drafts, only 3 have been starters to lead their teams to the Super Bowl. The draft is a 50/50 crap shoot at best.
Baker can’t lead the Bucs to the SB? Yeah, neither could Brad Johnson. There is way too much uncertainty in the future. We don’t have to sign Baker, we have the ‘Franchise Tag’, but what if Baker pulls a Le’Veon Bell and doesn’t sign it? We don’t even know if Bowles will be here or Licht for that matter. Heck, the Glazers could decide to sell the team.
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Sign Baker to a five year $285 million contract with $125 million guaranteed. The $125 million guaranteed is the only relevant number. Much like Baker’s current contract, if the Bucs want/need to, they can push a lot to the backend, but if not, they can get out of it fairly easily after year 3. For those needing help with math, 125 over 3 years is approx. $42 million per year.

Try 55 over 5 then Cape…
June 27th, 2026 at 1:46 pm
Are you trying to tell me that the most mediocre QB in the NFL was ranked #16?
I don’t believe it!
LOL!
June 27th, 2026 at 2:04 pm
He had a rough season a lot like Mahomes did before his injury. It happens when all your high paid offensive starters are out and there’s no pass protection and little skill position players left. He’s not *remotely* mediocre. He was drafted #1 for many still valid reasons.
June 27th, 2026 at 2:07 pm
Good thing is he is already signed to play football for yhe Bucs this season. We can revisit this conversation after the season and quote the likes of Simms and McCoy then.
June 27th, 2026 at 2:09 pm
Mac Jones
June 27th, 2026 at 2:17 pm
Mahomes has won many playoff games and 3 superbowls. When you have a take Matt, that can be valid, don’t get all hyperbolic with comparing a guy who 60-63 as a starter to a HOF QB. It sounds ridiculous.
Baker has struggled in big games, has been inconsistent and plays a reckless (some call it tough) that can cause injury.
I like Baker..but he needs to prove to be more consistent, win some big games and prove he can lead a team in the playoffs.
Handing him a huge contract because “who else are you gonna get” is bad bad business.
June 27th, 2026 at 2:19 pm
” Trash” A team or player that struggles?? Its a shame the players or coaches don’t have a blog like this so they can share their feelings about these wonderful fans
June 27th, 2026 at 2:41 pm
The only question i have for Mayfield, is why not jumping ship to Pitt or back to Cleveland once Monkon took over Garret would have stayed, the all you retards would now how it feels being back on th qb carousel ! Watch what you wish for!
June 27th, 2026 at 2:54 pm
Look, I like Baker. But this crap about “who else are you going to get” is just weak.
Someday, the guy is going to retire or maybe leave. They will have a starting QB the season following his departure, whether his leaving is Brady style or Evans style.
So let’s just stop this.
Everyone is replaceable.
June 27th, 2026 at 3:02 pm
It’s the team around the QB, not just one guy, although that 1 guy has to be able to produce, duh. Saying that look at history. Seattle with Wilson, last piece of the puzzle, done nothing since then, thought he was the reason. Uh, no. Mahomes in the SB against us. Team injured and all of his 2 targets shut down. Stafford? He was lucky to survive us and get to the SB. What has he done since? I hear about Josh Allen. Another 1 man show. Lamar, Joe Burrow, who else? It’s as simple as an etch-a-sketch. If this can be a balanced team they have a real shot with Baker. I think he took too much on his shoulders last year.
June 27th, 2026 at 4:16 pm
Steve V. And I hope you go with him and to let you know don’t no other team wants Baker as they’re franchise quarterback . He’s a meadicor quarterback that only had 2 good seasons in his 9 year career. Out of every quarterback that was drafted in his class he’s had the best weapons around him especially on the offensive side of the ball . Please leave when he does because I’m sick of you fake fans that just follow players from team to team.
June 27th, 2026 at 4:20 pm
ANYONE. Anyone, who is CHEAP. First, you ‘play-out’ this season. If they are a bad team with NO SHOT whatsoever, at being a true legit Contender (which is exactly who “I” believe they are), then you move EVERY available asset YOU CAN, before the trade-deadline. The very LAST thing you want or need is another $50-$60 MILLION per season invested LONGTERM, into a Quarterback who is NOT GOOD ENOUGH to get you over the top. You would be WASTING that amount of $$$$$ for NOTHING. It’s just like, taking a match to it! When, you could BANK those $$$$$$’s and invest back into your ‘salary cap’ and towards your overall ROSTER RE-CONSTRUCTION.
If you don’t have a ‘TOP-TIER’ level QB (and again, “I” don’t believe that we do), then you are just ‘THROWING-IT’ AWAY, with this current Bucs Roster. It is a ‘middling’ roster at BEST, and it’s going to take a whooole LOT MORE, than just a ‘middling’ QB. So, it is entirely IRRELEVANT who the “Quarterback” is… Just as long as they are NOT EXPENSIVE. It could me ANYONE (who is available). Because, it’s NOT going to matter.
Just as long as you are NOT ‘burning’ a 2027 1st-Round Pick, and REACHING on one. You. Build. The. ROSTER. FIRST. You DON’T WASTE (and ruin) your young STUD QB’s ‘rookie’ deal, on a team that is going through a complete rebuild. You are PATIENT (accumulating picks and talent assets), and you pick your spots, until you then POUNCE ON the ‘right’ QB who will be on the ‘right’ TIMELINE, with a STRONG-STACKED ROSTER. Until, then… It. Does. NOT. MATTER. Just as long as HE IS CHEAP.
Baker has 1-YEAR LEFT, to PROVE that HE can take this current roster and team to the Promise Land. Or, to show that HE is at least capable of doing so. Otherwise, you HAVE TO move on. Cause, we are just spinning our wheels here, and wasting our time. You DON’T KEEP “Baker” just because maybe, HE’s a little bit better and worth an extra ‘win’ or two per season, than the next guy! And, to PAY HIM as if “HE” is a top-level QB… Because, that would be STUPID. If you do that, then we are JUST STUCK. And, that is NOT good enough. I mean, WHO CARES that a bad team ‘wins’ an extra game or two!? It actually, HURTS YOU in the draft. He has to prove that HE can get THIS current roster to the TOP. If “HE” CAN’T… Then, we have to cut ties and MOVE ON.
We have one more season left, in order to figure this all out! Or more like, HALF a season left. Cause, if we are 2-6 or 3-5 and heading TO Chicago before the ‘trade-deadline’ going into the Bye-Week… Then, that ‘decision’ needs to already BE MADE. To SELL. SELL. SELL. And, THIS 2027 Draft-Class is just waaaay too important. You can get real good in a HURRY, with the ‘right’ Head Coach and GM. You DON’T pay TOP-$ (longterm) for a QB, just because. Just because you say, that there’s “no one any better.” That is a recipe for complete, total DISASTER. It tells ME that you have NO “PLAN.” And, that you are too empty and weak inside, in order to come up with one. Paying a QB (top-$) who is not good enough to get THIS current roster to being a true legit Contender, is NOT a “PLAN.” It is only further delaying the inevitable. Once again, we have 1-season here, to see WHAT we even have.
June 27th, 2026 at 4:35 pm
He is under contract currently, to play THIS upcoming 2026 season. He has to show that “HE” is good enough and ELITE enough, to get THIS ROSTER to be a true legit Contender. If “HE” is not… Then, it’s time that we have to move on, and go to Plan-B. Right now, THIS roster and THIS QB is Plan-A. We have until the trade-deadline, to see IF this current Plan-A is good enough, under this current regime of Baker, Bowles, & Licht. If it not, then it’s TIME to ‘move on’ from it ALL. Continuing to do the exact same thing EVERY year, and just rinsing and repeating, is pure INSANITY. I mean, after 5-YEARS of the exact same… I believe that it is time to get off the pot.
June 27th, 2026 at 4:45 pm
St Pete Matt has lost it. First comparing Baker to Mahomes, then calling him a top 5 QB.
I’m not in the Baker sucks camp, but freaking out and saying “The Bucs MUST” sign him before the season starts is just crazy talk.
Baker is under contract. A contract he agreed to that only 2 years ago. Sorry but he hasn’t done enough to earn a 55/year contract..yet. Pay him before this season and if he is average, below average or gets hurt..then the franchise is screwed for years. If he plays decently and the Bucs win 10-11 games, then pay him. If he plays like a top 5-10 QB then pay him whatever it takes.
Either way, he ain’t going anywhere. ..unless he sucks and there’s a new coaching staff.

Bee, how many HC has Mahomes played for in Kansas City? How would you compare Andy Reed with Todd Bowles? How many HC has Baker and OC has Baker had? Between Baker and Mahomes, which has had the structure and discipline needed for success.

And, you have the next young and aggressive STUD Head Coach, & regime with a brand new FRESH clean slate of draft-picks, AND an ‘ADDITIONAL’ $50-$60 MILLION a YEAR, worth of Cap Space to ‘BUILD’ THIS ROSTER with. You jump the gun too EARLY on Bake Bake, by locking yourself in longterm… You FAILED make room and gain all those 2027-PICKS at the trade-deadline… Then, you’ve just RUINED any chance you ever had at signing any ‘Top-Tier’ level HC and GM. IF, Baker looks like an MVP (very unlikely, but for arguments sake)… You can ALWAYS, sign him later. From the Bye-Week on… 💯. The Bucs are in a total ‘WIN/WIN’ position. If they are SMART… They will take full advantage, and USE IT.
June 27th, 2026 at 5:00 pm
@ okiejim – NO. Don’t EVEN. “Mahomes!?” Just Absurdity. And, it only destroys any ‘credibility’ that you might have left, while just making “YOURSELF” LOOK STUPID. I mean, come on… How RIDICULOUS. I don’t know about YOU, but the rest of us have EYES (and a brain). They just invent excuses for BAKER, that they’d NEVER make for ANY other’ Quarterback. “MAHOMES” LoL.

O’Neil and bob, Im just a fan that rolls with the punches i play the cards that im dealt with. I didn’t know fans that were true have to be filled with negativity, Bowles and mayfield are here and your opinions won’t change that..As far as leaving, unlike you im from Florida this is my home…Go back to being a jets fan

After reading some of these comments from the top… It is absolutely amazing how MANY grown “adults” here, have ‘allowed’ THEIR EMOTIONS to turn them into nothing but just total, complete TROLLS (losing ALL their credibility, and everything)… Over a fricken ‘professional’ ATHLETE. Just think about that! It’s some weird (sad) stuff.
June 27th, 2026 at 5:47 pm
Melvin Junior, nice that you answered for another post! Apparently you see no difference between Andy Reed and Todd Bowles! Structure and discipline, the two needs for any QB to not just play for a Super Bowl but win it!
June 27th, 2026 at 5:53 pm
“Trust Ronde and Arians and their opinions if you aren’t informed enough to make your own.”
Yep. JUST TRUST (lol) in the corporate machine, and the people who are involved and employed within it! Yep. Sounds like, a real smart thing to do. DON’T TRUST your “own eyes,” and brain. That is the EXACT ‘same thing’ these people do over and over again, with their politics, and with failed public policy! No matter WHAT… And, at ALL cost. They just fall inline, and TRUST the corrupt ‘activist’ mainstream legacy media, over the REALITY and THE TRUTH. Yeah, that sounds like a GrrrrREAT IDEA, right LMAO. It’s the reason for why THEY always look-like, complete FOOLS. And, then they get hysterical. Hence the now, “TROLLS.”
June 27th, 2026 at 6:07 pm
I ‘blindly’ throw MY trust to NO ONE. And, that has done ME very well… It’s the reason for why I’m usually, always RIGHT. I gather ALL the information (without ‘emotion’ or bias) from EVERY angle or side… THEN, I arrive at THE most logical, practical approach, and BEST common sense based SOLUTION. Some people are strictly controlled by THEIR OWN ‘emotions’ ONLY, and they just can’t deal LoL. You can’t take them serious.
June 27th, 2026 at 6:16 pm
@ Okiejim – Baker ALSO, walked right into ‘inheriting’ a franchise with a STRONG culture post Brady, with a “SUPER BOWL” pedigree, & TWO STUD WR’s. And, in THE ‘historically’ WEAKEST Division, in all of FOOTBALL. It’s all irrelevant, though. Because, the rest of the population, who is all telling the TRUTH… HAS EYES and A BRAIN.
June 27th, 2026 at 6:28 pm
@ Oneilbucs Says: “I’m sick of you fake fans that just follow players from team to team.”
Yeah, no joke… Right!? It’s some REALLY WEIRD stuff. “Adults.” Professional ATHLETE. Shewwww… That’s quite some Fantasy they’re living there. These people are sooooo far removed from the ‘realities’ of ever being around a ‘BIG-TIME’ sports team, inside of a locker room, or even ‘personally’ KNOWING and being around (or ‘friends’ with) any ‘professional’ athletes, before. They are completely CLUELESS. Ignorant of the inner workings, & etc.
June 27th, 2026 at 6:29 pm
Will someone please tell me what an “Elite” QB is? We seem to throw that word around a lot. Is it someone who “brings your team to the promise land?” I’m assuming that would be taking you team team to the SuoerBowl and WINNING IT! If so, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrows are not Elite. In fact, some of you “fans” would say that they’re nothing but chokers. BAKER 54M x 4.
June 27th, 2026 at 6:39 pm
Great point Kenmod. The Bucs never have had a problem finding a Qb as good as Baker. Recently history proves your point. Chris Simms, Brian Griese, Jeff Garcia, Josh Freeman, Jameis Winston, and Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The idea that getting rid of Baker and asking what’s the alternative is not weak it’s just logical.
June 27th, 2026 at 6:46 pm
Why are my somewhat whimsical comments being moderated?
June 27th, 2026 at 6:47 pm
If we don’t commit to Baker, he won’t commit to us.
June 27th, 2026 at 6:52 pm
If Mac Jones was a starter in the NFL, he’d have beaten out Purdy in SF. Didn’t happen. I’m not against letting Baker play out his contract but it’s risky. There are more than a few teams who would pursue him. AZ, Carolina, Saints, Minnesota to name a few. If you’re not upgrading your downgrading, so be aware
June 27th, 2026 at 7:11 pm
It’s all pretty damn simple. He’s signed and under contract RIGHT NOW. And, IF he plays ‘lights-out’ THIS season, and leads the team to a Playoffs-Win… Then, he gets a brand new FRESH contract, that is a lot more inline with what HE wants. If HE can’t get THIS roster to the Playoffs, out of THIS division, then it’s a total, complete REBUILD, and everything is torn down and starting over fresh again. In THIS scenario, it does NOT MATTER “WHO” our Quarterback is. Just as long as they are CHEAP. And, you do NOT waste a 2027 1st-Round PICK on a Quarterback, with an entirely DEPLETED ROSTER, that you are in the process of completing REBUILDING. The “Quarterback” is IRRELEVANT. You don’t RUIN your young STUD QB with THAT ROSTER. And, you definitely DO NOT WASTE his ‘rookie’ deal YEARS (the biggest benefit of DRAFTING one, in the first place)… It’s not the correct TIMELINE. You sign a VET “Bridge” on the CHEAP. It doesn’t matter WHO the hell it is. And, the very LAST thing you want to do is to have to “REACH” on any QB… Especially, with THIS 2027 Draft-Class, that is LOADED with ELITE prospects, all up and down it, at many other important ‘premier’ positions. THIS Draft is sooooo LOADED, that you will be able to find ‘high-end’ TALENT in the 3RD-ROUND, that would’ve been a 1ST-ROUND TALENT, in prior year’s Drafts. All you’re getting and needing at “Quarterback” for now, is just a 1 or 2-year PLACEHOLDER. And, THAT’s IT. The VERY WORST thing you could do is to have $50-$60 MILLION A YEAR (for the next 3-4 years) ‘tied-up’ in your total available Cap Space… That, could’ve been USED for YOUR REBUILD. Period. End of Story. It’s really as simple as THAT. Pretty cut and dry.

“If Mac Jones was a starter in the NFL, he’d have beaten out Purdy in SF. Didn’t happen.“
They split the season last year and finished with identical stats. 9ers are paying Purdy more, so there’s no beating out Purdy. What there is, is Jones staying healthy and biding his time to find a situation he likes best or SF prefers to deal as they own his rights as a player right now.
You’re going to put the player you invested in on the field, but Jones went 5-3 last year and threw for 13 TDs & 6 picks in those games. Both QBs finished completing 69% of their passes and about 2,100 yards passing. SF had a good amount of injuries too, didn’t fall off a cliff like we did.

The Saints and Panthers ALREADY HAVE their own Quarterbacks, and it’s possible that both Minnesota and Arizona will too, by the end of this season. Especially, Minnesota (as long as Jefferson is happy). There will also be at LEAST 3-4 Quarterbacks taken within the TOP-10 PICKS in next season’s DRAFT, and ANOTHER ‘additional’ 1 or 2 MORE, to round out the rest of the 1st-Round. SO, there will only be about 3-4 TEAMS TOTAL, who will be turning to the “Free Agency Market,” for THEIR NEXT QB. If you add the Cards and Vikings (along with the Bucs), there might be (‘MIGHT’) up to MAYBE, 5-6 teams… But, that’s REALLY pushing it! It’ll probably, much more likely, be around 3-5 Teams TOPS. And, some of them will only be looking for “bridges.” Plus, there will be others taken in the 2ND-Round. Baker will be REAL LUCKY, if he can just get even 2-TEAMS bidding on him, who REALLY want him. Regardless, there’s going to be AT LEAST 5-QB’s taken in the 1ST.
June 27th, 2026 at 7:50 pm
A lot of you seriously underestimate the coaching deficit on this team.
We literally just watched top 8-10 MVP play for a full season under Coen (a real good coach and OC) and the first half of this past season while Baker was healthy.
He played hurt with the Browns and they ran him out. They would kill to rewind that clock.
Of course there are options… FA and Draft the first commenter says with the point flying over his head. It’s taking a huge chance, major risk if you don’t have a real high pick and even then you don’t know forsure what you are getting. Only way the Bucs get that high pick is if Baker misses a bunch of games.
Not cause the roster is bad but the drop off at QB with this HC/DC… leads to a lot of losses.
June 27th, 2026 at 8:18 pm
It’s not one or the other.
Do you know how the packers have remained relevant for all these years? Solidifying the qb position. Love is no rock star but Favre to Rodgers to Love has made their franchise stable.
There’s no reason to close the door on drafting a qb next April (even in round one) after you extend mayfield.
That’s what the lambs are attempting to do.
If there’s a guy there at 10-20 (cause that’s there we’ll be picking) that can come in and potentially be a difference maker long term – you take him.
June 27th, 2026 at 8:19 pm
Both things are true. Baker is complete trash. And a rookie QB drafted by Licht is a guaranteed bust.
The only option is looking in free agency for a good QB.
I’ll give Licht that at least. TB12 made him look like a Mensa candidate.
But that can be said for everyone that stood on Tom’s shoulders and called themselves tall.
Committing market value level money to Mayfield would be a suicide mission.
No one will win anything under Todd Bowles.

Baker don’t need to prove diddly squat. Fiddle now snivel later in regards to making this player happy and getting the most out of him. This year. It’s what good teams always do.
June 27th, 2026 at 10:13 pm
What good teams always do is not retaining a head coach who oversaw the complete collapse of all three phases of his football team. It’s hard to suck a new level of vacuum out of offense, defense and special teams all at the same time.
But Todd is that kind of head coach. Gifted.

The “who replaces Baker?” crowd acts like the NFL has only two options: Baker or complete disaster. The reality is much simpler, you don’t hand out a $55–60M-per-year contract because you’re afraid of the unknown. You pay that kind of money because you’re convinced that quarterback can consistently elevate your franchise into Super Bowl contention.
The Bucs don’t have to make that decision today. Bake is already under contract for 2026 silly goose.
If he puts together another top-10 season, wins meaningful playoff games, and proves he’s the long-term answer, then pay him. If he doesn’t, Tampa still has every option available extend him, franchise tag him, draft someone, trade up, or pursue another veteran.
That’s called leverage and smart roster management, not panic. The worst move isn’t waiting. it’s paying elite money before you have elite certainty.

Baker Mayfield’s stats over the last three years in TD’s and Passing Yards ranks in the top 3 in the NFL. But we all know that. What he hasn’t had in the last three years is a good DEFENSE. So how can you compare him to guys like, for example, Josh Allen who’s had consistently good defenses behind him? Not to mention stability in HC’s and offensive schemes? Baker’s haters never mention those elements. And don’t kid yourselves, more than a handful of teams would be interested in Baker- this year or next. So trade him or pay the man what he’s worth: 54M x 4 … and that’s Baker giving the Bucs a hometown discount.

Chicken or the egg. Are Baker’s coaches lowering his level of play? Or does Baker’s uncompromising play get his coaches fired? Do you ever notice good QBs experience little turnover, while unsuccessful QBs tend t9 experience many HCs/OCs? Hmmmgood excuses involve self accountability

“Why are my somewhat whimsical comments being moderated?”
I think it is happening to most of use lately. A Joe assured me they are working on it last week. Meanwhile we’ll just have to be patient.

The one staff member I trust is Jason Licht. He has his detractors, but he has brought us a Superbowl and then rebuilt a competitive offense.
I formly believe the uninjured offense was good enough to get to the Superbowl last year. The the injuries started kicking in and it sll went downhill.
I believe the offense will be just as good this year even without Evans…who didn’t play a good past of the year in 2025.
I believe the defense will be extremely good next year, and will gradually improve this year. Hopefully it will be good enough in the playoffs.
And I expect the Special Teams improvement to be incredible.
When the season starts, I won’t call anything a win or loss until the game is played.
It’s going to be a great year, I think.

You guys killed me with the bucs always pick the worng quarterback stuff. So I guess the bucs shouldn’t never draft a quartback in the first round ever again? This is why this team will be back at the bottom real soon or at best end up like the Detroit Lions. Superbowl defense good offensive line real good running game with good receivers a Superbowl roster but with a quartback that’s holding the team back. The bucs must draft a quartback in the first round this year especially if Baker plays like he did last year. The injury excuse is over if he’s playing he has to produce. Again the 49ers had more injuries than us and they won 12 games so that’s not going to cut it this year. Injuries is part of the game. Ain’t no team a 100 percent healthy by week 5 especially week 8 or 9 it’s year 4 no more excuses NFC championship or bust !! Go bucs

The last quarterback the bucs drafted out played the one we got starting right now and I still got the stats in the training camp from right here when both were playing with the starters. Kyle Trask had 3 picks to Baker 10 picks that’s a fact and that’s a fact regardless how the Joe’s try to act like it ain’t true. The quarterback before him the meadi hated him which trickle down into the fan base with they’re narratives. With Jamies none of y’all cared about the running game the defense or the injuries or a bad offensive line. And not to mention the coaching. Those coaches had him throwing 45 to 50 times a game up the field and no body ever asked where is the running game in fact if you did ask for a running game back then that was just a excuse. Then when Brady came the running game matter so much and the coaching especially when Brady had 12 picks because of that trash no risk it no biscuit offense then Brady told B.A let’s do it a different way and here comes the Patriots offense. Now with Baker Mayfield and his fan boys and some of you bucs fan has bought into the jester he’s a dog and moxie but he chokes in big games in big moments just like last year and you guys still look at him who’s on his 4th team as a franchise quarterback ? I’ve heard one guy in bucs meadi say even if he plays bad he will give him a franchise quarterback type of contract lol 😂😂😂. It’s put up shut up this year no more excuses and those fake stats ain’t going to cut it either NFC championship or bust this year 4 it’s time to raise the standards with this franchise. You guys have the bar set so low you think meadicory is good now. NFC championship or bust if you have so much faith in your little quarterback.

It’s gonna be bust.

Joe thinks it’s fair to say that’s a legit range for Mayfield. He’ll likely fit somewhere between No. 10 and No. 16 come Week 1 of the 2026 season.
———-
I’d agree with the range, although on the lower half of the range. Still, there’s not a lot of a good quarterbacks in the NFL right now, which is the reason Baker would be rated that highly.
Of course if Baker was more consistent, he’d move up to the upper half of that range, maybe even get to 10th. But he’s never shown himself in his entire career to be consistent, so I’m not sure why, now into his 30s, he’s going to suddenly change. That’s the reason the Bucs should simply let this year play out and see what happens. If Baker plays well, it will mean in 2 of his last 3 years he played well, and by NFL standards that does get you paid. However, if he stinks again this year, well, that means two years in a row of stinking, and it will mean Bowles is fired, so you’d have one year of getting the entire offensive staff fired, followed by a year of getting the entire coaching staff fired. Not exactly sure how that’s worth a long term $50M year deal.

If “The draft is full of question marks. I don’t care how good they were in college. That does not guarantee they will be good in the NFL” had names, they’d be Ryan Leaf, Johnny Manziel, Tim Couch, Zach Wilson, RG3, Bryce Young, David Carr, Jake Locker, Heath Schuler, Andre Ware, Akili Smith, JaMarcus Russell…
Needless to say, Gerald’s got a point. The problem is, Baker’s not consistent top 10 talent but seems to be asking for top 8 (or so) money.
I’m not saying he needs to go, but I’m also not certain he’s worth what he’s asking.
