Todd Bowles Breaks Down Zac Robinson

June 17th, 2026

Bucs OC Zac Robinson.

Todd Bowles has a good batting average when picking offensive coordinators for the Bucs.

In four years he has hired four different coordinators to run the offense. The first two were solid extra-base hits as both got head coaching jobs after just one season.

The third? Ground ball to short.

So Bowles is hitting .666 in choosing play-callers. Will new Bucs offensive coordinator Zac Robinson be a home run, a single or a whiff?

Bowles was asked about Robinson yesterday. Unlike when Bowles was asked about players in underwear football (Bowles had little to say), Bowles did have substance in his answer about Robinson.

“He’s a stickler for execution,” Bowles said. “I really like that about him. Stickler for detail.

“He has something he’s trying to get done every day, whatever they’re trying to get done, be it in the run game or the pass game or the screen game, whether it’s the blocking, whether it’s the technique, whether it’s working on turnovers.

“He’s very deliberate in the things that he’s trying to do, and the guys are buying in.”

Joe likes to hear that. It seems Robinson has standards and the offense must meet those in practice before moving on.

Joe just hopes the production on gameday meets the practice standard.

Grizz didn’t have a healthy Wirfs, or Godwin last season. Our starting O line never played a snap together. Evans, and Bucky missed many games. Our defense was a disaster. Let’s cut Grizz some slack. That said, Robinson seems like a big upgrade. Let’s hope Bowles doesn’t ever have to pick another OC again.

On first and goal, let’s move the ball forward towards the endzone. Sideways is no good and backwards is right out. I wonder who gets the fade?

Injuries were a much bigger problem than play calling. Jose, you keep reminding people that Mayfield was on an MVP trajectory for the first 6-7 games. Was that because the play calling was so bad? Nah bro. Play calling was hampered by the injuries, in my opinion, to the QB, receivers, running backs and the offensive line especially.

Was Grizzard oh-my-God AWESOME? No, but you rarely see anyone that is head and shoulders above everyone else. Pretty darn good will get you top 10 every year. Will Robinson be better? Maybe, but I wouldn’t guarantee it. I mean, if he was so great, why was he looking for a job two of the last three springs? We will know more in three months.

Lastly, what else do you expect people to say this time of year?

  4. ScottyMack Says:

Maybe he’s the guy that can get the offensive line to understand and execute zone blocking schemes effectively. If not, I hope he’s as flexible as Coen and lets them do what they do best, gap.

  5. DR Says:

Coach-speak by Bowles. 19 penalties for 125 yards by Robinson’s Falcons last time versus the Bucs doesn’t speak to a “stickler for details.” Just the opposite in fact.

Z-Rob is intensional (to use his favorite word).

Football is 80% Blocking and Tackling.
The Bucs were not good at either after the Bye last year.
They have brought in new coaches in all 3 areas of the team and more physical free agents and draft picks.
The Offensive line appears to be healthy
The Defensive line is healthier and more physical and deeper which should improve the pass rush.
The Linebackers will be more physical which should improve the run defense.
They will likely add a veteran CB before the season starts.
Special Teams will be much improved with the coach and players.
Get some Luck in the Stay Healthy Department and there is reason for optimism.

  8. Billlbuc Says:

Accountability … does Bowles hold the players accountable like Arians did . I mean if you don’t learn from your predecessor, what’s the point?

  9. infomeplease Says:

At least he had film to study on ZR. The last guy, not so much.(I forgot his name already, lol)

This is where some of you guys suck at separating the yolk from the egg in terms of knowing the coach-player dynamic.

A coach can be detailed, and his players having mental errors has nothing to do with how he views being detail oriented.

Just like a class of students can learn the same thing, from the same person and get tested on the relevant info taught to them and still fail. That doesn’t make the teacher any less effective teaching, but it does show who’s having problems keeping up.

Same thing goes on in football. preparing someone doesn’t mean they’ll rely on their preparation once the action goes live.

Anybody who’s been coached or coached themselves would know this, maybe not on the exact way I’m explaining it. But you guys tend to talk like coaches are in control of players, and it’s a terrible talking point.

You can have the best coaches in football and will fail if they don’t have the players to carry out their assignments. Just look at what happened to probably the best coach in the NFL for the last decade or so. Andy Reid! KC was awful last year. Did he all of a sudden become stupid? No! His players got old and expensive and where in cap hell. It has been and always about the Jimmies and the Joes. I’m not saying good coaching doesn’t matter, but you can’t win with bad players period.

“Zac has a lot to prove…wonder why Athur Smith didnt promote him as HC IF he did so well in ATL”

That’s the quiet part that’s not being talked about out loud, is that ATL offense struggled just as much as ours last year. They had a 3 game span in late October last year, where Robinsons’ offense was like 3-29 on 3rd down conversions combined in those games. We struggled like that last season, we cannot have that happen in 2026.

ATL fans griped about Robinsons offense being stale, predictable, repetitive and they hated they he did everything primarily out of the pistol. Which with their personnel and given the fact they didn’t have a QB who was a threat as a runner, kind of takes the mystery out of RPOs and makes it easier for defenders to guess right.

It was reported, London wanted Morris to stay as HC, but wanted Robinson gone. So I’d caution my fellow Buc fans to read up on Robinson, let the McVay & Coen comparisons go and just read up on HIS job history as an individual. It’s not all gum drops and lollipops, don’t set yourselves up like alot of us did with Grizzard.

  22. Kenton Smith Says:

Zac is on our team now. If I’m on the defense on our team I am thinking somebody needs to knock London’s a$$ off. That’s the kind of team we want to be.

  23. 3.28.Evans Says:

Perfect. By early November, Twocoach will have taught Zac how to completely confuse and demoralize his players on offense, too.

  24. DungyDance Says:

“The third? Ground ball to short.”

And that came off of swinging at ball 4.

  25. Licht-is-a-Bobblehead Says:

the team has 5 WR and 5(!) TE drafted by brain-dead Jason Licht – if Licht is any good that should have provided Mayfield with sufficient targets – with the 6 OL drafted by Licht any failure on the offense falls squarely on Licht’s shoulders – many JBF like to point the finger at the defense for the offensive failures last year but it is time to put up or shut up
