Is Vita Vea A Hold-In?

June 16th, 2026

Frustrated with contract?

It may not be Operation Shutdown but it seems Bucs manbeast defensive tackle Vita Vea is not comfortable with his current contract situation.

That’s the word from Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Appearing on “The Insiders” tonight, seen weeknights on NFL Network, Garafolo claims Vea not participating in mandatory minicamp this morning at One Buc Palace is, in some way, contract-related.

“My understanding is the contract is playing into this,” Garafolo said. “Again, from my understanding, sources have told me that the fact that he is in the final year of his deal, hasn’t gotten an extension to his point, is part of the reason that he is not participating.”

Vea, like Baker Mayfield, is entering the final year of his contract.

When asked about why Vea was not practicing this morning, KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles said Vea was healthy and there was no big deal because the Bucs don’t need Vea on the field in June.

“We don’t need to see him right now,” Bowles said. Bowles did not mention Vea’s non-participation had anything to do with his contract.

Garafolo hinted Vea is currently well underpaid. Per Spotrac, Vea’s average annual salary for 2026 is $17.75 million. That’s not even in the top-eight of salaries for defensive tackles, again per Spotrac.

Chris Jones, Chiefs $31.75 million.
Milton Williams, Patriots $26 million.
Zach Allen, Broncos $25.5 million.
Nnamdi Madubuike, Crows $24.5 million.
Alim McNeill, Lions $24.25 million.
Derrick Brown, Panthers $24 million.
Quinnen Williams, Cowboys $24 million.
Jeffery Simmons, Titans $23.5 million.

“This is well above where Vea is under the last year of his contract, which was signed over four years ago,” Garafolo said.

As Joe stated, this isn’t exactly Operation Shutdown. But it sure smells like Vea is in the middle of a sit-in.

Well if there is no Vita you can kiss this season goodbye along with Bowles job.

  2. JohnQCitizen Says:

    Good point.

  3. Rod Munch Says:

He wasn’t underpaid when he signed that giant deal.

That’s the point of teams doing longer term deals, they get value on the backend. It’s why I said to sign Evans for a lot more than 2 years a couple of years ago, because people whining about $20M being a lot of money are clueless to where contracts are going. And sure enough, now guys who have career years of 620 yards are getting nearly $30M a season.

Anywho, for Vita, I’d lock him on a new deal. Unlike Baker, we know exactly what we’re getting, and I think he’ll continue to be a top player for another 3 or 4 years, before falling back a bit where maybe he becomes more of a 2-down top flight run stuffer. He just seems like a guy who will play for a long time still.

But if he’s not going to be a long term part of the team, trade him. You’ll get a big return for him, and there’s literally no reason to just keep him around for one year to let him walk.

  4. BillyBucco Says:

Now this is something that could ruin the season.
If Baker will play on contract but not Vita, maybe a trade who knows.
If another team wants to pay him and we can get a 1st why not?
Especially with next years QB draft.

  5. Chris Says:

Vita isn’t a top 8 D linemen. He’s very overrated. 7 sacks in one season is his best season. Don’t give me the bs he helps over DL and LB make the sacks/plays cause this defense has been horrible year in and year out

    ——–

Top 8 defensive lineman? You mean vs all lineman? He’s a 3-4 NT and you think he should have the same sack numbers as a 4-3 DT or 4-3 DE?

Man, talk about clueless and having no idea what you’re watching.

But no, is he one of the 7 or 8 best defensive lineman in the entire NFL? Is he one of the top 3 best NT’s in the NFL? Yes. Would he be top 8 if you’re talking DT’s and NT’s? Probably. Of course that’s all over your head since you don’t even know the basics.

  7. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If not injured, Vita plays maybe 60-70% percent of the plays. He’s never in top shape to be a 3 down player.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

LOL! Now the Baker Boi(s), fresh off telling us that Mike Evans was never very good, are now telling us that Vita isn’t that good, because they’re worried he might get a contract extension and Baker may not.

  9. Saskbucs Says:

    Way to go Rod!

A great post and I agree with most of it.

Not sure about locking him up. I wouldn’t do more than 3 for 60 I don’t think.

  10. LynchMob50 Says:

Licht is about to run off another SB champion. He’s getting really good at that.

Hopefully he’s another turd circling the drain when we finally flush the Toilet Bowles.

Take Brady out of the equation and they’d both be gone years ago.

Even BA was hot garbage until he was gifted TB12.

Then Bowles torpedoed our title defense. McVay owns him.

  11. LynchMob50 Says:

Joe Stalin is at it again. Posts are disappearing like political prisoners.

  12. Sal Volatile Says:

RuhRoh…..What if this starts a domino effect ?

  13. MelvinJunior Says:

This could REAL UGLY. For Vea. The Bucs need to hold their ground. These situations rarely EVER workout for an aging player period, especially not for a DT. At his age if he decides to ‘sit-out’ the entire season (which he won’t), then he’ll NEVER be able to recoup his LOST $17-MIL that is owed to him NOW. He just won’t have enough time left to do so. And, the Bucs can move him at the deadline, as a rental to a contender. When they are 2-6 or 3-5. The Bucs need to stick to their guns, or just add another year, while ‘guaranteeing’ him a nice little chunk for this one.

  14. MelvinJunior Says:

With that said, I don’t blame HIM for sitting-in. It’s the right move for HIM at this point of his career, with not having any guaranteed money. I wouldn’t want to risk anything either, over a practice.

  15. MelvinJunior Says:

    Should’ve taken BIG Deone Walker.

  16. View from 132 Says:

Another guy with a big reputation that must win WITHOUT Brady or he was just a good piece of a once great team. Just like LVD, Winfield… and yes, Evans. Whole lotta guys still living off 2020 and 2021.

  17. ScottyMack Says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t salaries, on average, go up every year, coinciding with the increase in salary cap?

All eight players listed in this article signed their contracts years after Vea did, some as recently as this year.

  18. Joe Says:

Joe Stalin is at it again. Posts are disappearing like political prisoners.

LOL Love the (inaccurate) analogy. 🙂

  19. MelvinJunior Says:

Mike played all those seasons under team-friendly contracts, and everyone wants to BASH HIM. But, I am NOT hearing the first word from ANY of the Baker Bois, who falsely pushed this entire narrative that Baker just loves ball, and will take a “DISCOUNT” to play HERE. Because, HE LOVES Tampa Bay SO MUCH. Instead, they’re ALL screaming for the Bucs to break the bank. No matter what, at all cost. So, why are they not demanding that Baker just sign the deal then!?

  20. MelvinJunior Says:

Other than Jones, all of those guys are farrrr YOUNGER, and some of them play more like, as a type of ‘hybrid’ DE. And, even with the Jones Deal with KC, they gave themselves basically an ‘opt-out’ clause only after 3-years. So, it really wasn’t a true 5-year deal, when they extended him.

  21. MelvinJunior Says:

Vea knows he’s primed to be trade-deadline meat, too!

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Oh no… I just saw on the front page of the NY Post that a former 1st round pick pick of the Buccaneers is retiring from the NFL at only 27 years old.

I was thinking, who do the Bucs have that is 27…

Then, I took the bait, click the story… it’s JTS.

I guess saying you’re going to retire is one way of spinning that no one is calling to invite you to camp.

  23. OR Buc Says:

    Rod

Why would there be no reason to keep him around for at least 1 year? Uh, because we would suck this year without him. He’s 31 and on the downside of peak. Prob wouldn’t fetch a pick worthwhile enough for his services this year. And Todd’s D runs through Vita I.e. stopping the run first and foremost, making them one dimensional.

  24. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Rod Munch – WOW. Unbelievable.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Garafolo hinted that Vea is currently well underpaid. Per Spotrac, Vea’s average annual salary for 2026 is $17.75 million.’

It’s all relative. Average annual salary is just that … AVERAGE. The cost of everything goes up annually nowadays as we’ve all experienced. In Vea’s case, he signed a 4-year contract back in 2023 for $71 mil with a little over 20% guaranteed ($14.7 mil). That was good money in 2023; not-so-much today apparently (at least in Vea’s eyes).

Obviously his next contract will be a LOT more than his current one, even though he’s now 31 years old. Every team can only afford so many BIG contracts though, and we’ve already got several that we’re paying out:

o Mayfield (Rnd 1): $33.3 mil annually; UFA after 2026.
o Wirfs (Rnd 1): $28.1 mil annually; UFA after 2029.
o Goedeke (Rnd 2): $22.5 mil annually; UFA after 2029.
o Godwin (Rnd 3): $22.0 mil annually; UFA after 2027.
o Winfield (Rnd 2): $21.0 mil annually; UFA after 2027.
o Vea (Rnd 1): $17.8 mil annually; UFA after 2026.
o McCollum (Rnd 5): $16.0 mil annually; UFA after 2027.
o Robinson (Rnd 2): $10.0 mil annually; UFA after 2026.
o Otton (Rnd 4): $10.0 mil annually; UFA after 2028.

Those 9 Buccaneers, all making $10 mil or more annually, total $180.7 mil annual salaries. The base NFL salary CAP for 2026 is $301.2 mil, meaning that 17% of our roster (9 players) eat up a full 60% of our salary CAP. That’s actually not horrible, UNTIL your high-priced talent decides that it wants even MORE money. A LOT more.

Mayfield’s gonna want about $20 mil per year more; Vea probably about $10 mil more. Re-do just those 2 contracts right now and the 60% jumps to a full 70% of your 2026 salary CAP going to high-priced talent. That’d definitely cut into our ability to negotiate after this season with players like Diaby, Mauch among others.

  26. BucHead Says:

You have a contract, so get your fat ass on that field and get to work. If you don’t like how much it pays, you shouldn’t have signed it, and if you want more next season, then prove that you are still worth it. Vita is declining, living in the past, and seems more committed to himself than this team. He’s been nice to have in the middle, but I’m not sure he’ll be worth the going rate for 2027 and beyond.

  27. RagingBrisket Says:

    The answer is yes, obviously

  28. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Whatever happened to honoring agreements?

I don’t think him sitting in is contract related at all. More than han likely, he’s trying to preserve his body. Lots of DTs avoid minicamps. Suh did.

    Vea will honor his deal.

On the other hand, if David Walker had worked out healthwise, the team might have a potential replacement and could get a first for Vea.

I don’t think the season would be toast without Suh. We did well wthout a good defense for years. The irony is that Bucs fans were down on Gerald McCoy for not raising the level of the defense…and he produced more sacks than Vea has. Really, Vea has not raised the level of the defense either.

Vea had the benefit of Suh and JPP around him at one point. McCoy was given no one.

  29. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Sigh

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    I’m done.

  31. RagingBrisket Says:

Vita Vea is the best part of whatever you think this defense is. Without Vea it is pedestrian with what’s left. Bowles rightfully relies on Vita Vea for his scheme to work.
Pay the man. He has earned it

  32. Defense Rules Says:

    Chris … ‘Vita isn’t a top 8 D linemen. He’s very overrated.’

Oh wow Chris, Vita Vea is hardly ‘overrated’. On a ton of plays Bowles’ defense only has TWO DLinemen out there, and Vea in those formations would typically be getting double OR even triple-teamed. If you focus on him in games, you’ll see that happen constantly. He’s one of those critical defenders that the opposing offenses have to game-plan against.

Go through the 8 DLinemen on Garafolo’s list and compare them to Vea in 2025 (they’re all DTs BTW, not NTs) …

    o Vita Vea (NT Bucs – age 31): 17 games – 763 def snaps – 4.5 sacks – 13 QB Hits – 7 TFL – 34 tackles (16 solo) .
    o Chris Jones (DT Chiefs – age 31): 17 games – 762 def snaps – 7 sacks – 25 QB Hits – 12 TFL – 29 tackles (15 solo).
    o Milton Williams (DT Pats – age 27): 12 games – 428 def snaps – 3.5 sacks – 8 QB Hits – 8 TFL – 29 tackles (15 solo).
    o Zach Allen (DT Broncos – age 28): 17 games – 797 def snaps – 7 sacks – 47 QB Hits – 4 TFL – 38 tackles (14 solo).
    o Nnamdi Madubuike (DT Ravens – age 28): 2 games – 102 def snaps – 2 sacks – 3 QB Hits – 2 TFL – 7 tackles (5 solo).
    o Alim McNeill (DT Lions – age 26): 10 games – 524 def snaps – 1 sacks – 3 QB Hits – 2 TFL – 14 tackles (5 solo).
    o Derrick Brown (DT Panthers – age 28): 17 games – 808 def snaps – 5 sacks – 11 QB Hits – 5 TFL – 73 tackles (33 solo).
    o Quinnen Williams (DT Cowboys – age 28): 7 games – 275 def snaps – 1.5 sacks – 9 QB Hits – 3 TFL – 21 tackles (9 solo).
    o Jeffery Simmons (DT Titans – age 28): 15 games – 764 def snaps – 11 sacks – 21 QB Hits – 17 TFL – 67 tackles (39 solo).

Looking at those high-cost DLinemen, I’d say that Vea is the most valuable NT (and the only one) plus probably 4th most valuable in that group in terms of 2025 performance. His 4.5 sacks is 5th most in that group; his 13 QB Hits is 4th most; his 34 tackles is 4th most; his 7 TFLs is 4th most. Very significantly IMO, he played in all 17 games and gave us 763 def snaps (4th most again).

4th best in that group right now makes $24-$25 mil. And that’s probably close to what Vea will be asking to continue on as a Buc after this year.

  33. Davenport Says:

Trade him. Problem is, his salary wont fit into most other team’s cap.

Older, doesn’t play enough, in terrible shape. He’s a great contributor when healthy but isnt worth the investment.

  34. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

Baker, Vea, Godwin, Winfield all aren’t getting BIGGER contracts next year. It’s not my job as a fan to stress about the millions Jason has to manager for my team. But damn, this might be the last season we see all four in a Bucs jersey

  35. Hodad Says:

Better throw another 10 million on that 17 million he’s getting if you want Vea to play this season. He can afford to sit out, and would be crazy to play for that. If he was a FA this season the Bucs no doubt would’ve franchised him. At least offer him the franchise tag money if you want him to play this season. Vea has been working out with Suh, they are tight. I’m sure Suh has been giving him contract advice too. He was savvy with his money, and contract deals. This will be a problem.

  36. Lessismore Says:

Vita Vea was one of the highest paid DL when he signed the contract 4 years ago.
    He signed it.
    Now he wants more.
Keep in mind he plays 60%-70% of the snaps.
Anyone ever talk about Vita being a leader?
    Vita all about ‘me’.

Baker (for those that hate him) wants a new contract.
But he’s in camp, he’s practicing and has said he’s under contract and will play the season under his current contract.
Plays 100% of the offensive snaps.
All about the team and I’ll take that any day of the week – especially on game day!

  37. Stew Brew Says:

His play has dropped. We should be discussing what his pay cut will be.

  38. Beeej Says:

With no hitting, not much for a D lineman to do ANYway

  39. Bojim Says:

He definitely should be making a few million more per year.

  40. Optimistic Says:

The 49’s have plenty of cap space in 2026. Trade Vea to the 49’s. Without a new contract Vea becomes a FA. By trading him the Bucs can get a decent draft choice and frees up money to resign Baker.

  41. MelvinJunior Says:

DR Says: “4th best in that group right now makes $24-$25 mil. And that’s probably close to what Vea will be asking to continue on as a Buc after this year.”

Everyone of those guys are 3-5 years YOUNGER (outside of Jones, and KC can walk away from HIM very easily, if he’s injured or declines this season). 3-5 YEARS is HUGE in THE NFL period, but for a DT it’s astronomical. That’s 3-5 Years worth of THEIR PRIME. I can’t see ANYONE giving VEA THAT. Definitely NOT longterm. I mean, he better have a career year, if HE thinks he’s worth that type of money. It ain’t happenin.

  42. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Buccaneer Bonzai – You’re not getting a “1ST” for Vea, or anything even remotely close to it. IF you can get a couple of teams bidding before the trade-deadline, then you might (MIGHT) be able to get a “4TH (as a rental) AT BEST, while under an expiring contract. And, I’d take that in a HEARTBEAT for this upcoming 2027 Draft Class.

  43. Bosch Says:

So which contract should be prioritized, Vita or Baker. It is a very easy question to answer when you consider the void each would leave. Behind Vea, you have several reasonably serviceable defensive tackles. Admittedly That is somewhat offset by Kancy’s fragility, but how great is the void behind Baker? Uh, yeah. Plus how important is a QB versus a DT?

No matter how much of a fan or non-fan you are of either, there can be no doubt as to which has greater value to the team.

  44. MelvinJunior Says:

@Buccanear Bonzai – Be Real. NOBODY’s giving up a 2027 (or 2028) ‘FIRST’ for VEA. I can’t understand HOW you just throw that out there like that, or WHERE you get such ideas. It’s just not based in reality. I mean, “WOULD YOU” do it if “YOU” were another team!? I FIRST-ROUND PICK!? Yeah, that’s what I thought!

  45. MelvinJunior Says:

  47. MelvinJunior Says:

Vea will NOT be “holding-out” for the entire season. HE will be playing come WEEK-1. He’s only “sitting IN” is all, and I don’t blame him for it. I would be too, if I’m not guaranteed any money for this season.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

MelvinJunior, teams prefer expiring contracts. It allows them to negotiate a new one.

  49. JackBall Says:

Veal’s numbers are about the same as Chris Jones. He’s paid over 31 million a
    Season.

  50. JackBall Says:

    Vea’s

  51. Tampa2ATL Says:

Suh’s influence not just in training but likely finance as well – neither of which is wrong for the individual (VV in this case). Vea has been our defensive line for past few years. Can see him playing another 4-5 at high level – Samoan strength. Does he deserve financial security? Yes!

The challenge (as DR outlined) is budget allocation. Not every position can be paid top 10 money at their respective position. Which position(s) get the most investment? Will top 10 money earning players be happy getting paid paid but losing games? Myles Garrett wasn’t. Hierarchy of Needs.

  52. 3.28.Evans Says:

Vita knows he plays for a guy who is better suited to teach the concepts of failure to other fired coaches. That day is coming.

  53. BuccinBaker6, Says:

Wow people need to relax they will get Vita an Baker figured out they Take care of there own that’s what Tampa Does if it was that serious Vita wouldn’t be here at all but they all have enough respect for each other to do this the right way an I for one want Vita to be a Buc for Life Like Godwin, Wirfs Those are the Guys right now that should never put another level uniform on maybe AWJ as well But there will be more on that list as time goes on Luke Tykee Smith prolly An Luke Geodoke

  54. MelvinJunior Says:

@ Buccaneer Bonzai Says: “teams prefer expiring contracts. It allows them to negotiate a new one.”

IRRELEVANT. Because, you are NOT getting a 1ST for VEA, regardless. Period. And, that’s rarely the case on expiring contracts. They are absolutely NOT giving up MORE for VEA, because of such. Also, it depends on the MONEY. Yeah, you’d be correct ONLY IF he was already ‘locked up’ for 3-more YEARS, at $20-MIL+ per year or something like that, at HIS AGE! But, NOT if he only had 2-YEARS left (including this season), and with very little guaranteed money left on his deal. But, again, it’s all irrelevant because VEA is bringing nothing even close to that. Especially, with THIS upcoming 2027 Draft.

  55. MelvinJunior Says:

If the trading partner had one more year left of control on him at no guaranteed money, then they MIGHT be willing to to give a 3rd versus a 4th. But, on a 💯 expiring, then NO. HE is not worth anything MORE. Just because it’s expiring. IF he had 3-more YEARS (at $22-25MIL+PER with a lot of it still being guaranteed)… Then, he’d probably be UN-Moveable, at HIS AGE.

  56. MelvinJunior Says:
