Todd Bowles Confident Bucs Receivers Will Overcome
May 29th, 2026As Joe is wont to do, Joe browses a lot of national NFL voices to get a pulse of the Bucs. Different looks through different prisms.
One common worry from several NFL prognosticators is how the Bucs will recover from the loss of Mike Evans.
It isn’t just that Evans didn’t let the door of One Buc Palace hit him in the ass on the way out of town as he raced to the west coast to take a paycut and play for a team that lost to the Bucs last season. Gone from the Bucs’ locker room is leadership. Knowledge. A man to lean on for advice and wisdom. A passionate warrior.
And oh yeah, Hall of Fame production.
The same folks who wonder about how the Bucs will rebound from this loss also believe how the team rebounds will say a lot about its 2026 fortunes.
Speaking after the first open OTA practice on Tuesday, KitKat-eating Bucs coach Todd Bowles thinks he has the right receivers, mentally and physically, to keep the Bucs train on the tracks.
“Anytime you lose a player like [Evans], or any veteran player that was legendary on their team, different guys got to come in and step up,” Bowles said. “And that’s the nature of sports.
“And I’m sure we have some guys in that room that will.”
Bowles also remarked, “We know [the wide receiver room] got a lot of talent right there.”
Joe is looking for a breakout from Jalen McMillan. Bowles lauded McMillan’s mental toughness on Tuesday. And it’s known that defenses will be keyed on Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka.
Perhaps with that focus in mind, McMillan surprises teams early on.
In his rookie season, McMillan played in 13 games and had eight touchdowns. Joe’s going to say if McMillan can get 10 touchdowns in, say, 16 games, the Bucs offense should be fine.

Godwin has everything Mike took away, except a HOF resume. When it came to leadership and mentoring the younger players, no one talked about Mike alone. It was always Mike and Chris. Well, we still have Chris and he’s going to show the world that he’s not chopped liver. They speak as if he’s not here. That must have his blood boiling!
May 29th, 2026 at 7:48 am
“And oh yeah, Hall of Fame production.” Once upon a time this was a true statement..but lately:
2025: played in eight games. 30 / 368 yds and 3 touchdowns. That shouldn’t be too hard to replace. Yeah….Father time wins again.
May 29th, 2026 at 8:00 am
If this O-Line stays healthy there is no reason to believe that we won’t have a Top 10 Offense with ‘Born Again’ Baker in a Contract year and weapons all over the place. Now if that Putrid Pass Defense can only be halfway decent-then this Team can do somethings this year. 10 wins is doable. Go BUCS!!
May 29th, 2026 at 8:14 am
We’ve got to find out who can beat man coverage on a consistent basis outside of Chris, and my money is on J-Mac-that guy knows how to win 1 on 1.
May 29th, 2026 at 8:32 am
Lt Dan, we’re not trying to replace the production of an injured Mike Evans of last year. We’re trying to replace Evans overall. We don’t want to replace what wasn’t effective, obviously.
I think Baker is a rhythm QB. Your top target checking out every 2 plays is no way to find a rhythm. I really think this hurt us and Baker way more than we think. Finding holes in certain DBs and attacking them during a drive is impossible if you check out every route.
May 29th, 2026 at 8:33 am
I’ll say right now. Hurst will make us forget an aging Evans. He’s the only true X on the roster. Robinson had London, he’ll know how to get Hurst the ball. Keep an eye on this kid. He’s the real deal.
May 29th, 2026 at 8:41 am
JMac is giving every indication of being another Licht home run in drafting receiver position. With Emeka those 2 check receiver boxes that most teams can only dream of. I believe it has everything to do with character and work ethic. And Chris Godwin exemplifies those qualities. Otten does too. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if this small school rookie exhibits those same qualities. These kids aren’t rookies anymore- they are getting better. Godwin leading this group is perfect. Sure, losing Mike would be a severe blow to most teams. Not to this team. Kudos to Jason Licht.
May 29th, 2026 at 8:43 am
WBL, I couldn’t agree more. J-Mac is the real deal. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him emerge in a big way. Tough as nails and intense. There’s a lot to like in our WR room. Hurst is going to benefit learning the ropes from all the quality guys from Godwin on down. When J-Mac came back from that horrific neck injury last year and balled out is any indication of what’s to come, look out!
May 29th, 2026 at 8:44 am
Drake London usually lines up at Z (Flanker) which is what Egbuka will be doing in Robinson’s offense. But I do think Hurst can contribute this year quite a bit.

The beat goes on…
May 29th, 2026 at 8:44 am
Evans is a spiritual loss not a production loss. The key is Robinson The change in offensive coordinators and the new running back and the return of a healthy offensive line should more than compensate. The question marks are on defense.
May 29th, 2026 at 8:57 am
The team missed ME when he was injured
The team does not miss what they don’t have.
Eyes forward!
May 29th, 2026 at 9:10 am
ME will be missed. However, like always players will be replaced and maybe sooner than we think. His time was coming to an end, it was just sooner than we wanted and expected. Yes, the Bucs need to move forward. ME is now a proud Niner. The Bucs do have good receivers. Yes Hurst may prove to be a hidden gem. We will see
May 29th, 2026 at 9:18 am
I trust Licht to draft wide receivers! He’s **more than** proven himself capable of finding great players and tremendous values. I wouldn’t be shocked if Hurst blows up just like Egbuka and McMillan and Godwin and Evans.
May 29th, 2026 at 9:29 am
Bucs have veteran leadership in Godwin and budding stars in emeka and McMillan this team is in really great shape still even with Evans moving on, still wish him the the best.go bucs.
May 29th, 2026 at 9:29 am
“Evans is a spiritual loss not a production loss.”
I’m starting to think some are grappling with the difference between replacing production and now not having that 1 WR that manipulates coverage.
Since 2015, our offense got game planned against with teams having to dedicate at least 1 body and 2 sets of eyes on Mike at all times. No matter how much or how little Mike produced, whomever the OC or QB was at any point in his time as a Buc-that NEVER changed, not even last year.
Defenses don’t look at us now thinking they have to play blanket coverage to a particular side or dedicate at least 1 body and 2 sets of eyes to contain Evans. They focused on taking away slot routes last year while pressing our boundary WRs daring us to go deep while crashing down on anything we tried taking underneath. There are going to be some growing pains for our guys, doesn’t mean they’ll fail, but they’re going to have to adapt.
May 29th, 2026 at 9:37 am
I’d love to see all of McMillan, Godwin, and Egbuka having 1000 yard receiving seasons. Heck, Hurst too. There should be someone open on almost every play with that group!
May 29th, 2026 at 10:19 am
Evans not attending SF OTAs this week
May 29th, 2026 at 10:23 am
Mike Evans felt threatened by these young receivers. Now he’s wearing an irrelevant number 5
May 29th, 2026 at 10:26 am
I’m with Joe. McMillan is the surprising “lucky” dark horse. He’s been nothing less than refreshing when he’s on the field. A ball in his hemisphere IS coming home with him to start with so his hand to hand is impressive. His leaping ability is severely underrated and I believes he far quicker than even Joe thinks. A 4.47 speed rating IS lightning for most humans on the planet. His long speed? Not sure about that just yet.
Last year was “supposed to be” his coming out party. We All already know that a genius and a goobber breath SCREWED THAT UP! So with the combo of Godwin (the new UNQUESTIONED leader of the receiving division), McMillian (who has ALREADY PROVEN to be a rising star after closing out the 2024 season in SPECTACULAR FASHION), and the potential of the yet still unproven edition of last years first rounder, “Ebuka” whom seems raring to go to PROVE himself this season, we are in a “pretty solid” receiver situation. Of course, our newest high flyer “Hurst” has to fight for playing time as well. And I hear he’s not too shabby as well.
Considering we didn’t see much of Mike “on the playing field” last season, and with additional playing time and healing time for everybody else…… I think we’ll be PLENTY STRONG ENOUGH with what’s STILL outstanding depth in the receiving depth. Add in the fact that Robinson has an affinity (like myself) for “Tight Ends”, I have a feeling he’ll bring out something we haven’t had much of before. A new angle and “Skills Found” in the tight end room from MORE THAN just one guy! So there’s those options as well.
WE’RE FINE!
They’d be Better Served focusing on the running back room on the Offense (no bucky and No White) and BIG ATTENTION to the Paper Thin SECONDARY on the Defense… We are NOT OK in Those departments in particular.
And if we don’t give more concern in the secondary, we WILL SEE A REPEAT of last year. Curious to see what the genius has in mind. (because we KNOW he won’t adjust his underwear much less the defense when we OBVIOUSLY MUST!)
May 29th, 2026 at 11:18 am
What if Evans had retired this year after his injuries last year. Any player in the NFL can be gone in an instant. This is just stupid off season chatter because we have nothing better to talk about.
I love mike Evans, but his days were numbered anyway. Father time always wins.
May 29th, 2026 at 11:44 am
Obvious One Says:
…and the potential of the yet still unproven edition of last years first rounder, “Ebuka”
———————————————————————————-
I’d say 938 yards receiving has proved something! Even though he didn’t finish like he started, he had a spectacular season for a rookie.
May 29th, 2026 at 11:44 am
The problem with most national media types is they’re lazy and only see NAMES like Evans and LVD leaving and think the team has taken a step back.
In reality, LVD was pretty bad last year, to the point teammates had to call him out. He retired for a reason. And Evans, while still a good player, was injured the last 2 years and even when healthy I think most Buc fans held there breath everytime he hit the turf.
Loved both players, but the “HOF” production was fading from both and good teams move on from once great players. Thankfully JL has stocked the WR room with a bunch of good young talent in Emeka, JMac, Hurst and Tez. And the Bucs still have Godwin as the savy vet and leader.
I’m not worried one bit. Exactly excited to see what younger, faster and healthier plays can do.
May 29th, 2026 at 12:00 pm
Mike was Bake’s comfort security blanket. Mike dropped a couple of ‘big-ones’ (deep, when wide ass open) over the past 3-years, but he for sure ‘bailed-out’ Baker (with his size, toughness, and length), waaaayyy more times than not. It’s gotta be nice having a guy like that, where you can just ‘throw-it up’ and then let him come down with it. That’s what will be missed. A chain mover and RedZone threat. Hell, it’s what was missed LAST season.
May 29th, 2026 at 12:08 pm
JMac can help fill that role, if he can stay ‘ON’ the field. He can really go up and git it, and Baker seems to feel comfortable with him. Especially, when inside the RedZone. He might not have the length as Mike on ‘jump balls’ BUT he is every bit as TOUGH, and gets a lot more separation.
May 29th, 2026 at 12:13 pm
There are A LOT of great receivers in this league (who can PLAY), and almost every team is stocked full of em.

I hear ya. But I have higher standards for Ebucka. I know it doesn’t seem fair but Ebucka was drafted High compared to everybody else. You’re right concerning his yardage. It WAS impressive (truly). And I admit, I’m being harsh. But can we Actually Depend on him? Why don’t I trust just yet?… I think you already Know Why. Godwin and McMillan have PROVED themselves. And Ebucka hasn’t.
He disappeared! And when someone vanishes like that….. their proof just got tougher. Potential and Proof are two different animals. I didn’t throw him under the bus after all. I’m just not so sure just yet and I’m reserving judgement until we all see more. A “complete” year before I put a crown on his head. He’s still a glass “half full” guy in a BIG Way. But still….

‘Joe’s going to say if McMillan can get 10 touchdowns in, say, 16 games, the Bucs offense should be fine.’
Seems like 10 TDs in 16 games is an excessively high expectation of McMillan’s 2026 productivity Joe. Mike Evans averaged 8 TDs over his first 6 years, then 10 TDs in his next 6 years with us, and Mike’s had a HOF career already. And he had 11 seasons of 1000 yards or more to accomplish that in.
2024 was an exceptionally strong year IMO for our Bucs’ offense. We used 8 different WRs that season, but they combined to MISS 47 games. We kinda played musical chairs with our receivers that year, and yet they all combined to score 28 receiving TDs, while our RBs scored another 7 TDs & our TEs scored another 6 TDs. We had 10 different players catching TDs for us, and my suspicion is that this year we’ll have even more. We’ve got plenty of talent to equal or exceed the 41 passing TDs that we scored in 2024. Baker’s good at spreading the ball around.
May 29th, 2026 at 12:55 pm
Joe explained why in his story. In fact it was the very sentence before Joe referenced 10 touchdowns.
May 29th, 2026 at 1:27 pm
Weakest link on the team. The wr group.
May 29th, 2026 at 1:28 pm
As much as I’ll miss Mike Evans, he was a bit of a one trick pony (and he excelled at that one trick and a fierce competitor), as of late he was getting a bit long in the tooth and somewhat injury prone. I’m hopeful that a healthy Chris Godwin and Jaelon McMillan along with Emeka Egbuka and some young hopefuls, that the Bucs’ receiving corps will step up and produce some fun and exciting results.
P.S. I’m not as high on Mike Evans H.O.F. chances as some, maybe I’m old school but real elite hall of fame receivers have a number of 1500+ yard seasons, 100+ catch seasons under their belt. He’s definitely a ring of honor player, just not a H.O.F. lock. Just sayin’. Go Bucs!
May 29th, 2026 at 1:45 pm
We got CG he’s a leader. Waste of an article
May 29th, 2026 at 1:47 pm
But will they overcome the wide open, soft as butter, pee wee league caliber, Swiss cheese pass defensive scheme of our guru HC\DC, Todd Bowles???
Asking for a friend.
May 29th, 2026 at 1:51 pm
Evans and LVD had become shells of the players they were. I believe both should have retired but can’t blame Mike for trying one more season with one of the best OCs in the league. There is plenty of talent in the WR group. I highly doubt ME13 will play beyond this 2026 season. Godwin is the only one with any to prove and that is that he’s ? recovered from the injury. If he is he will Baker’s security blanket.
May 29th, 2026 at 2:25 pm

10th All-time in receiving TDs as of today.
The 4th player in the history of the NFL to reach 12,000 yards & 100 TDs in his first 11 seasons w/ Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, and Marvin Harrison.
Another 1,000 yard season puts him in the top 12 of receiving yards all-time
Obvious the 1,000 yard streak
Made the NFL top 100 nine times
7 seasons finishing top 10 in TDs
The same case that can be made for LVD getting in after seeing Keuchly get in
is the same case you can make for Mike after Megatron got inducted.
May not check the exact same boxes, but either way the resume is HOF worthy.
May 29th, 2026 at 2:26 pm
This Mike Evans wasn’t all that rhetoric some of you are on has got to be some type of shard coping mechanism and it’s makes for a nasty read
May 29th, 2026 at 2:28 pm
Our new OC will be much more creative with receivers. I suspect some trick plays, like having Tez do a running back flip onto Durham’s shoulders in the end zone – touch down every time!
May 29th, 2026 at 2:30 pm
I’m glad Bowels is confident the WRs will overcome, the problem is no one outside of one Buc is confident Bowels will overcome his own ego (firing all of the D coaches)
May 29th, 2026 at 3:00 pm
Joe,
I’m not really aware of of another way to speak to you, outside the comments attached to an article, so here goes. This offseason has been pretty difficult for me , given last year’s performance, so I have been avoiding most Bucs news, except for events like the draft. As such, when I DO come back, I have a lot to catch up on. So, I often have to transition from an older page of articles to the next one in line.Sometime in the last 2 -3 years I have started to encounter ads that ‘remove’ any ability to get to the next page article, and also the next Page of articles. An example in this current ‘page of articles’ is the Hooters article. When one is catching up on your content it REALLY makes it hard to see all the content. It’s not ALL ads, but enough to make catching up with all the Bucs news difficult. I realize I’m in a minority of your audience, but at 76, I just have to take a break after a really (and truly ) bad season. It’s not losing, per se, but losing while not (apparently) trying that gets to me. Not sure if the ad thing is a ‘bug’ or if the advertising company wants me to pause enough to pay you for that. When I hit it, both the next article link (at the top of the page, and the next Page link at the bottom disappear. Not a real issue if one keeps up on the reading, but a real pain if one is starting 4 or 5 pages back, specially if the ad is in the middle of the page. I’m only mentioning this because I know that most of your readers keep up , so you might not have been informed. If it’s not a ’bug’ and is intended, just ignore it this, and we’ll both move on. LAST and definitely not least, thank you for the best Bucs news site on the ‘interwebs’, I truly appreciate what you guys do.
May 29th, 2026 at 4:11 pm
Fritz:
The posts that are ads — Joe calls them promotional posts — that don’t offer “next” is something that is new (not that Joe wanted it) with a recent software upgrade. Unfortunately, it’s the new norm.
If you encounter an ad that won’t let you read or navigate, it’s only temporary for a few seconds. If that’s too long to wait, just page-back and then page-forward.
May 29th, 2026 at 4:40 pm
The Bucs are still very good at WR, but losing a guy like Evans is huge, because there isn’t another guy like Evans in the NFL right now – not with his height/weight/wing span combo that makes him so difficult to cover. Still, Godwin was looking like himself at the end of the last, e2 was open all the time at the end of last year, and as I said before, I thought McMillan actually looked like the best WR on the field for either team in the last few games of the year. The Bucs still have a WR room that would be envied by the vast majority of NFL teams.
But losing Evans, what he brought to the team, it’s just something you can’t replace. And no, Hurst, who is 2″ inches shorter (Evans 6′ 5 3/4″ vs Hurst 6′ 3 5/8″) and 25lbs lighter (231lbs vs 206lbs), isn’t going to replace Evans in that role – not in the same way. Not a knock on Hurst at all, but people thinking he fills that same role don’t understand how special Evans was. The comparable for Hurst, if he reaches his top potential, is George Pickings – which is still really good and if that happens the Bucs are set at WR for a generation – but again, it’s just not the same type of physical WR as Evans.
May 29th, 2026 at 4:40 pm
WBL. Mike probably has a hall of fame body of work already banked. And I thought he looked strong after last year’s unfortunate collarbone injury. He looks to me like he’s got 2 or 3 years of some good football left. Easily enough to cinch up his hall credentials. And if the reason he left was to improve his hall credentials, well, that’s not saying much for him, is it? Maybe he will tell his fans, and his teammates who risked alot to get him his 11th straight 1000 and sack of money, why he left them. For less money. I’m thinking somebody hurt hims little feelings. Wonder if it was Baker? Wonder if Baker ran him off?

It’s going to be interesting to see who can step up in the red zone. Evans excelled in the end zone and his ability to out muscle defenders. I did not see this from EE last year. Maybe the man in the end zone to out muscle defenders is Hurst or even Otton?
May 29th, 2026 at 5:09 pm
“As Joe is wont to do” I know that phrase is grammatically correct but every time I hear/read it I want to chase it down with a shot of Bourbon.
May 29th, 2026 at 5:55 pm
Heres whats up’
They dont have a red zone threat. They have their 4rth OC in 4 years. The head coach
Doesnt make adjustments. EE will be doubled most downs. Bucky irvin comes back
Or maybe not who knows. The oline depth isnt good. Can Chris godwin and kancey
Actually stay on field longer then 8 games? After nearly breaking his neck how will
Jmac be?
However I think the defense will be better. Pass rush and linebacking play should
Improve. The edge should now be a strength as long as todd doesnt drop them
Into coverage.
If the defense stays stagnant it could be an ugly year with a top 5 draft pick and a
New head coach. Time will tell.

Mike is going to the HOF. Eventually. Just not as a “1st-Ballot” Lock. I mean, it’s possible, IF he has a couple of great seasons in San Fran, AND gets another Super Bowl. THEN, I’d say he’d have a great shot at going “1st-Ballot,” depending on who all else is up for their candidacies.
May 29th, 2026 at 6:05 pm
@ Yeahmetoo – I completely agree. Bowles has got to get Tykee, Parrish, Scott, & Antonio Winfield Junior ALL ‘flying all over the field’ to the ball. McCollum & Lil Benji (the “Godson”) has really got to STEP TF UPPPP.
May 29th, 2026 at 6:10 pm
There is absolutely NO WAY we could be any worse at Linebacker, than what they put out there on the field last season. No. Way. Possible. It was some of THE WORST I’ve ever seen before, in THE NFL.

————
I thought that a couple of years ago, but I think he does go 1st ballot now. Listening to other teams podcasts over the years, and the respect for Evans has grown tremendously – you really can’t discount all those 1000 yard season in a row and what it has done for his rep nationally.
We went from hearing, even during the Brady years, that Mike Evans was “really good”, to “one day a HOF’er” to “a 1st ballot HOF’er” – again, those being other teams podcasts. To me that’s one of the best way to gauge the national opinion, and goes beyond the more generic national voices.
Also, as I’ve brought up before, unrelated to this – the one guy on the Bucs who people here have zero appreciation for is Yaya. When you hear other teams podcasts (talking about ones with former players, not just random fans) and they break down film, every single time the one guy they always talk about popping on tape is Yaya, and saying they didn’t realize how good he is. Licht needs to get him locked up, because I think he’s going to be very expensive too keep if Bain is good and Kancey is healthy, and teams can’t just double focus on Yaya coming from the edge.

e2 really isn’t that style of WR.
Godwin might be that guy, he’s gotten a lot more muscular over the years, he could be more involved.
McMillan really isn’t a guy that you generally should expect a ton of TDs from – if they happen, great, but they’ll likely be more fluky. I won’t get all that concerned if he has 4 or 5, if he’s around 1000 yards.
One thing about Hurst, while I make the point he’s not physically the same has Mike, who has a huge wingspan and is a giant by WR standards – one thing Hurst has is a ridiculous vertical, so perhaps you get more jump balls with him. Those however are more timing plays than physical plays.
Otton obviously could be a lot more involved, but while he’s a better receiver than I think a lot of people give him credit for, creating space isn’t his strong suit – but he’ll pick up some of the scores.
The big thing is to simply rely more on the running game. The reason the Bucs have had so many passing TDs in recent years is they had a cheat code in Evans – but now they’ll need to do more than just relying on Evans to outmuscle and outsize guys. That’s not a knock on anyone, just saying that’s what I assume their plan will be. So we could see a drop in TDs in the passing game, but with most of it made up in the running game.

Hursts’ wingspan is 79 3/4ths inches
Mikes was 82 7/8ths

Over 3″ is quite a difference – ask any woman.
But yeah, Hurst, with his vertical and wingspan could be great for job balls. But between those 3″ and the 25lb weight difference, I just don’t think we should expect him to be running the same type of plays. But I could certainly be wrong if he turns out to be more physical than I’m giving him credit for (and Godwin over the years has gotten a lot more physical compared to what I thought I saw on his college tape).
