“Hunger” Fits Bucs Offense, Baker Mayfield

May 12th, 2026

New Bucs playcaller Zac Robinson.

So are the Bucs an ornery, focused and hungry bunch after the mess that was November and December of last season?

Yes, says new Bucs offensive coordinator Zac Robinson. He spoke to today at One Buc Palace and was asked about the offense’s and Baker Mayfield’s hunger. “That word exactly” fits, he said.

“You can tell this group has an edge, which you want to keep that edge. You know, things didn’t go down the way that you would hope last season, obviously,” Robinson said.

“That’s why we’re all here. So I think that Baker naturally already has that edge to him — and you can feel it even more. He’s been so intentional with his footwork and all the fundamentals and the details that [QB coach Chandler] Whitmer and our coaches are preaching to him.”

Joe liked how Robinson basically said the Bucs overhauled their offensive staff because things didn’t work last year. Hopefully, that’s understood by players and they can’t relax into any kind of status quo.

As for Mayfield, Joe is not surprised to hear he’s dialed in at a new level. There’s a ton of money on the line, in addition to a lot of pride.

Eat some Kit Kats so you can grow up to be just like Todd, Zac.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

We’ve got roughly 4 months to go until the REAL season starts. That’s a LOT of time weight lifting & running, learning play books, walking through play-after-play, but not nearly enough kicking the snot out of each other in full-padded practices & games. HOPEFULLY this team, with so many new players & leaders, learns how to make the most of those limited opportunities to hone a nasty attitude.

DR, I agree with your narrative with the exception of the strength of schedule piece. Highly overblown. No matter which way you look at it. The guy Joe hosted yesterday did it in a more meaningful way, but there are so many variables that I can’t believe that any kind of prognostication regarding strength of schedule is meaningful.

    * by the way, I saw that you reposted and removed that sentence. So perhaps you’re thinking the same.

  5. Lakeland Says:

Baker Mayfield will be 32 years old next season
Jason Licht won’t invest a “ton of money” in an aging QB
At least l don’t think he’s dumb enough to do it

  6. Stpetematt Says:

Baker Mayfield will be excellent well into his 30s. Maybe even at 40. All he needs to do is take care of his shoulders.

  7. 813bucboi Says:

gotta commit to running the ball with Kenny and Tucker…Bucky is still iffy..and we all know what baker does in the 4th quarter of games

    RUN THE BALL!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  8. Knothead71 Says:

    @Stpetematt
Baker isn’t excellent right now at 31. He’s a serviceable NFL quarterback.
Yes you can win with him but he needs a lot of help to make it happen.

  9. Kenton Smith Says:

Knothead. Tell us about your list of excellent quarterbacks the past three years. Then tell us why Baker has better stats than all of them the last three seasons. Oh, yeah. He’s serviceable. Also explain to us what the heck serviceable is supposed to mean.

    WINS!!!!!!!!…not stats….

    WINS says he’s serviceable!!!!!

his 5 4th quarter turnovers suggest he’s less an serviceable

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. Steven007 Says:

Team game. There’s a reason quarterbacks don’t have win/loss records like pitchers do in baseball.

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    lol..

    isnt baseball a team game?..lol

    GO BUCS!!!

  13. MelvinJunior Says:

Well, I like the hat. The rest is nothing but just meaningless, empty talk. That, EVERY Friggin’ Coach says this time of year.

  14. MelvinJunior Says:

The W/L records for Pitchers are totally irrelevant nowadays, where most starters only throw for about 5 or 6-innings, TOPS. Just take a look at the number of Complete Games Pitched League-wide over the years, and decades. It’s Insane. With that said, has anyone else looked at the standings now that we are at the quarter-pole of the season. It’s Unbelievable. I’ve never see it ever before, but there are ONLY 4-AL Teams (and like 8-NL) playing above .500 ball right now… FOURRRRR. And, the Rays are on a HEATER, dominating the American League. FIRST-PLACE. It’s Unbelievable. There are SEVERAL things I’d like to go over and discuss right now, but it’s for another time. But, JUST THINK if we still had Wander… It’s SICKENING. We would have possibly, THE BEST most dynamic, dangerous, and talented Duo in MLB HISTORY, that is under 25 years-old. Maybe, at least, since Chipper & Andrew Jones. Absolutely, AMAZING. Wander would be hitting .370+ with Junior protecting him. INSANE. Just makes me SICK. I mean, how freaking STUPID. Cost us SO MUCH. Just think of the number of FUTURE Prospects… We could’ve ended up getting an ALL-TIME HAUL, when it eventually became time to move him. I mean, with THAT CONTRACT… We could’ve turned HIM into prob 6 Top-100’s. SIXXXXX. Then, Junior… Same type of deal. Wander friggin’ KILLED US. I’m glad they seem to have recovered. THIS TEAM is sooooo CLOSE. They all meet for dinner on the road and stuff. And, they play an “old-school” style of play… The way the game was supposed to be played. This is (so far) Kevin Cash’s BEST JOB by farrrrr. The MLB has made all the right moves… EXCEPT for what they’ve done to the local TV-markets. It’s shameful and IGNORANT on soooo many levels. I used to be a 162’er (either on the tv or radio), before the injuries to the the pitching staff and then the whole Wander Franco ordeal, but I just flat out REFUSE to PAY for ANOTHER Friggin Package. They’re playing sooodamn good though, that I might have to. It’s BS.

  15. MelvinJunior Says:

Players making $50-$60+MIL PER now, and we had Wander LOCKED TF UP for around $20+MIL PER all the way through, until he was 30+Friggin YEARS-OLD. I mean, there really wouldn’t had been a trade you could’ve made that would’ve been fair (say with 2-3 years still left on his deal) for a HOF’er of HIS caliber for that type of money. Unless, there was a team with at least 3-4 Top 20-25’s, and another couple of Top 50-60’s thrown in. Just absolutely KILLED US. In soooo many different scenarios, no matter how you dissect it.

  16. Lakeland Says:

I’m not saying that Baker is a bad QB, he’s a decent QB
But, at the same time a GM has to use common sense
Is a 32 year old QB worth a ton of money
You have to evaluate everything, from the past to the future
How will he perform a few years from now? Will his play decline?

It’s a very difficult decision to make

  17. JimBobBuc Says:

Who’s this QB coach Chandler Whitmer?

  18. LANshark Says:

Most QBs get better with age, up until about 38 or so. So, Baker is really just coming into his prime. Aaron Rogers is 40, and still playing at a high level.

We rush QBs into the game far too fast these days, then wonder why they flame out. It takes a good 3-5 seasons for most to develop the instincts and skills to excel in the pro’s.

  19. exBrowns02 Says:

Whitmer had some encouraging words about Mayfield in today’s conference: “He’s coachable and wants to be coached.” All good!

  20. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

My issue is Baker’s style of play at his age. Brady, Rogers, Manning were not running QBs that put their shoulders into tacklers. Baker will not fair well in his mid 30s if he continues his playing style.

  21. What it is Says:

Baker needs a lot of help to win-Knothead.
Tell us, pray tell Knothead, what qb doesnt need a lot of help to win
