  1. SteveK Says:

For this GM to have franchise tagged Chris Godwin twice, extending him once when his leg was broken, I’d expect Evans to be back and by any means necessary: including the franchise tag.

If Licht gets cute and we lose Evans, I’ll be calling for a new GM and HC if we fail to make the playoffs next season and Evans goes elsewhere. Simple as that.

  2. Bucsfanman Says:

Voted “don’t care” but think they should keep him.

  3. DBS Says:

Don’t Care. They are going to do what they want to. It’s not my money to even worry about it.

  4. SteveK Says:

    DBS,

Good for you. I care because I believe Mike Evans is still a baller and gives us the best chance to win. If they let him walk, and we suck, I’ll be calling for a new HC/GM.

  5. Mort Says:

All of those are below the franchise tag. I’d pay the man 30 million if he wants it.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

Well, if SteveK is calling for it …

  7. Dan the Bucs Fan Says:

The take care of our free agents and keep all our draft picks model is broken. If it really built culture we would not have collapsed like we did. Time to start treating this like a business instead of a family cause the players don’t care an out the team the way the team cares about them. Sad but that is where we are.

This is a 7 win team talent wise and 7 win teams can’t over pay a hall of famer wide receiver who is in the twilight of his career struggles to stay healthy and struggles to get seperation.

To overpay Evans is crazy when you don’t have the talent to compete on the field.

Hurts my soul to say this but you can’t pay him like a superstar offer him a team friendly deal and a chance to retire as a buccaneer legend like he is.

  8. Cassandra Says:

Thank you for your service, go get a ring, you deserve another.

Investing money into a declining player, even one we love, is a bad, bad move for the franchise.

  9. Fred McNeil Says:

Honestly, even before he got injured he was way, way behind the pace for another 1000 yard season. $22 or 23 million is more than what he is actually worth.

  10. Senor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

ME, come back and get the Bucs a ring. You, the Bucs and your fans deserve it – EXCEPT for the constant cry babies and idiots on the JBF comment section.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

It’s not my money to spend, but $23 million seems reasonable. No way would I tag him.

I would like Mike Evans to retire a Buccaneer…but, in my opinion, this should be the last year the Bucs should offer him 20+.

I think the whole free agency thing is a bluff by his agent though. Mike was key in convincing Chris Godwin to take substantially less to stay. He’s going to be willing to do the same.

  12. Bee Says:

I picked other. I think Mike is gone so he can ring chase while he still can, a la Rice at the end of his career. Mike has earned it. He’s taken discounts and restructured contracts his whole career.

Face facts yall, the Bucs team we knew is gone and Mike staying won’t help this team win more. Paying $20+ mil for older, injured WRs isnt smart with a team that has this many holes. This roster needs serious rebuilding and that starts by getting rid of expensive contracts. This is the last season for these old, oft-injured players. Thats why Licht wants to keep flexibility for the future.

No extensions and no big name FAs this off-season. This will be a very lean year. When the team shat the bed down the stretch that was a sign that the leadership cant lead and many of the players on this team aren’t very talented and obviously the coaching is horrific.

Prepare to be underwhelmed. Not being negative, just reading the writing on the wall.

  13. buccintimeforchanges Says:

You can’t have $50 mill in two broken WRs again.

SMDH. Too many emotions running people’s opinions.

This is a very narrow view that neglects to consider all of the factors involved. I’m not picking on you. You have a right to your opinion. But I would like to add to your considerations:

The biggest contribution to the collapse was injuries. While every team has them and depth is meant to deal with them, those players who function as depth are not starters for a reason. For whatever the reason, be it talent, ability, experience, maturity, or whatever, they are either never going to be starters, or are not yet ready to be starters.

The common goal is to have second stringers who are on the cusp of starting. This isn’t always possible, but that is the goal. Third stringers are a significant drop-off in talant, ability and maturity, and forth strings being even more so.

We were into the forth strings and beyond (practice squad and street guys) at various positions last season.

On top of this, we had the Todd Bowles meltdown press conference where he threw his players under the bus. While first stringers and most second stringers are muture enough to blow it off, the maturity of 3’s and 4’s would not be. It would have, and did, effect their effort.

And finally, even when some players seemed to get healthy, they mostly were just healthy enough to be able to play, but still had lingering injury issues…or were not “football ready”. Being team players, they likely insisted on returning because they were witnessing the collapse as well…but many were not ready.

Baker Mayfield, for example, should have been able to take at least 3 games off. First his non-theowing shoulder, than his rib, and finally his throwing shoulder was injured. He should have been sitting.

But everyone knew at the time that Teddy Bridgewater shouldn’t even be in the NFL, and putting him in would have been sure-fire losses. In hindsight, they were anyway, but there was no way to know that at the time.

The whole Bridgewater thing rests squarely on Todd Bowles. He had always wantedto coach Teddy. Given Teddy’s recent treatment, Bowle probably wanted to help the guy out. Big mistake.

    And finally, the Defense.

It’s easy for people to say Jason Licht and Todd Bowles should have been able to build a beter one, but that’s also a narrow view.

The truth is that today’s NFL is built for Offense. We’ve know this for nearly a decade now. It took 7 years for defensive head coaches to even make it to the Superbowl.

Todd Bowles insisted on getting Mayfield as our QB, and that meant neglecting the defense to build around him.

Given our cap issues at the time (just after the Brady era), this meant building around Mayfield thru the draft. This meant rebuilding the OL (Marpet had retired and other spots arose), finding RBsm TEs and a couple WRs. All of this over a three year period.

The cap issues ruled out big free agents, along with trades (couldn’t take on big salaries).

Last draft was the first time Jason could really focus on the Defense in the draft (in this era)…and even then the first rounder went to Offense (EE will likely be worth it).

So this year, the draft is key. Then development of those picks.

I think we MIGHT see up to two proven free agents signed.

    Just some things to consider.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Also, re-signing players is about more than loyalty. It’s also about appearnce to free agents.

  16. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

He can take Reddicks paycheck in addition to what he earns. Just keep him in Tampa

  17. Bucs Fan From Philly Says:

If he wants to walk, negotiate a sign and trade for a draft pick. Day 2 or Day 3, just get some compensation

  18. MadMax Says:

2/32….gotta stay healthy….but if he leaves, i dont blame him and wish him luck.

  19. SteveK Says:

    ModHairKen,

Thanks! What say you on the matter? Why twice tag Godwin and not Mike once? I don’t get it. Evans returned last year and was looking spry and elite. He’s a playmaker, we need him. He is a bonafide #1 WR.

  20. Todd Says:

    Fred McNeil

That’s because our numb nuts rookie play caller didn’t run the offense through our #1 all time best receiver.

He should have been fired for using such poor play calling judgment!

    Oh, wait…

  21. RTG_BUCS Says:

I believe the NFLPA should negotiate a rule that any player that stays with a team for ten years (or whatever a good number is) their salary does not count against the salary cap any longer, or maybe only count against the veteran minimum.
