Dumbbell Issue For Luke Goedeke

December 2nd, 2025

So a bunch of wildly wealthy people committed to excellence at One Buc Palace haven’t figured out how to put every possible tool at Bucs players’ disposal.

That was Joe’s takeaway from listening to beastly right tackle Luke Goedeke last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Goedeke moaned about how the Bucs don’t have 160-pound dumbbells in the team weight room. Apparently, Goedeke has complained about this for some time. Former Bucs defensive tackle Will Gholston was in on the interview and he verified that Goedeke has beefed about the Bucs only having dumbbells up to 150 pounds for a long time.

“That’s been a nook in my craw for a while, for years now,” Goedeke said. “We need to get heavier dumbbells here.”

Joe did some research on the price of 160-pound dumbbells, and while they’re outrageously expensive for the average Joe, there’s no good reason why Goedeke didn’t buy a pair himself and pass on the receipt to someone of importance at One Buc Palace.

And where is the strength coach in this? And who is his boss?

On the broadcast, Goedeke explained that he still flies economy class to save money, despite his 6-5, 320-pound frame. So perhaps that’s why he hasn’t bought the dumbbells himself. Goedeke has a strategy on Southwest flights, it seems, to prevent someone from sitting next to him.

Joe sure hopes a power hitter at One Buc Palace gets word of this equipment oversight and fills the weightroom void. What a shame it would be if Goedeke isn’t able to maximize his strength potential.

  3. Bosch Says:

So what is the strategy on Southwest flights? Does he rip off a raunchy one?

  4. PSL Bob Says:

    160 lb dumbbells? Holy crap!

  5. Todd Says:

Premium Urethane Dumbbells: High-end, durable urethane sets can be significantly more expensive, with some brands listing a full set (e.g., 160 lbs – 200 lbs) for over $8,000.

    Let’s call it $10,000.

What is that at the Bucs stadium, a set of 200 hotdogs/beer?

    $10,000 / 67 (Luke’s number) that’s 150 of us donating $67 apiece.

Joe, set up the fundraiser and I’ll be the first to donate my share to the cause since the Bucs weight coach must be a non-assertive wussy.

    @bakermatfield

Please note…Christmas gift idea hear for your O-line. Cheaper than getting them big boy scooters.

  7. Hodad Says:

Maybe they’re saving the boy from himself? Lifting weights, like body building can be addicting. Unless the goal at One Buc is to win the Mr. Universe contest instead of the superbowl, Goedeke will have to suffer through lifting 150 lb dumbbells. Probably more for his own good.

  8. Steven007 Says:

Total non-issue. If it’s an issue for him, he can do an extra rep or two with the 150s. I think he was being somewhat facetious while humble bragging.

  9. heyjude Says:

Luke sounds pretty thrifty. Good for him.

Not only the cost for the heavier dumbbells, but there are probably other reasons too.

  10. buc4evr Says:

I’ll make him some 160 lb concrete dumbbells for only $1,000. 4 , 80 pound bags of concrete from Home Depot and some 2 inch diameter steel pipe. They will be kinda big though… lol.

Geez, you would think the Bucs would just spend the cash and get the guy what he wants.

  11. TomMoore4President2028 Says:

I doubt it’s a money issue. At some point, a dumbbell becomes so heavy that it dangerously increases the likelihood of injury no matter who you are. 150lbs seems just fine.

    Weird dude.

  15. Muscle Hampster Says:

It’ll be my luck that he sits next to me on my next flight.

  16. Eckwood Says:

It appears the majority of the defense are just machine users

  17. ModHairKen Says:

Jesus. God. If the man needs 160 lb. dumbbells, procure them!

It’s like the annual survey and they have bugs in the locker room or whatever their concerns were.

This is the NFL. Spend the F’ing money to make these guys who risk their lives, literally, feel appreciated.

  18. Fred McNeil Says:

My only dumbbell is a 25 pounder.

  19. Love-spiral Says:

I have the same thing at my gym, Luke. I get it

  20. DeRobbins Says:

probably purposeful. increased weight can lead to increase chance of injury, it may be a strength trainer protecting our team by quietly non-complying

  21. Adam's Angry Says:

The don’t have a leg curl machine either.

    Ask Mike Evans.

  22. KABucs Says:

If they only have them up to 150 then they would probably have to get 155 pounders, 160 pounders on 165 pounds to have them incrementally go up correctly. I’m guessing the staff doesn’t want to have to move those things around when it’s time to clean etc. LOL.
Very few people could actually pick one up and move it without injury. Many people posting on this site can probably not even bench that much.

  23. Aqualung Says:

Typical. A real head coach would dig in behind the scenes and do something about it. Our Bowleszo just jettisons pablum from his overdeployed clenched teeth.

    I couldn’t find one online

    BINGO!!!!!

last thing we need is another injury because 2 players were goofing off trying to curl the new 175 dumbbells lol

    GO BUCS!!!

  27. HopeIn1Hand… Says:

Dumbbells are safer than plates and a bar, particularly if one desires to lift alone sometimes. They also enable greater range of motion and are far less likely to lead to chronic back and shoulder issues that come from Western style strength training. For example, bench presses done with dumbbells can be brought down to the level of the bench itself (not bounced off the chest rapid fire) and each arm bears the burden of raising the weight smoothly and stably independently, delivering a whole other level of functional strength. I could go on but everyone here knows as much about lifting as they do about coaching so I’ll save my breath.

I was in Luke’s boat long ago and never got bigger dumbbells. The cleaning staff won’t need to be concerned with cleaning them or around them if he keeps them in motion frequently enough that they gather no dust. It’s satisfying to come back from a vacation and see that patina of dust on “my” biggest boys, knowing they weren’t touched by any of the mirror-flexing, howling ‘roid junkies in my absence. Let Luke use as much force as he can. Please?

He should curl Tez Johnson. About the same weight.

Note to self…If Luke wants the next set on the weights at the gym? Do not argue with him. 160? Wow!

    Go Bucs!
