Baker Mayfield = Aggressive

November 2nd, 2025

Not phased by tight windows.

This just fits his personality.

Whether it is running a linebacker over, escaping a pass rush and running for a first down, or sparking a hassle with the defense in order to snap his offensive teammates out of a funk, Baker Mayfield is prone to take a game into his own hands.

Now, his aggression has been documented. NFL NextGen Stats now actually tracks how aggressive a player is. And it seems Mayfield is very aggressive.

In fact, NextGen Stats believes Mayfield is the third-most aggressive quarterback. The only NFL quarterbacks more aggressive than Mayfield are Jake Browning (LOL) and Dak Prescott.

How does NextGen Stats measure aggressiveness? Here it is defined:

Aggressiveness tracks the amount of passing attempts a quarterback makes that are into tight coverage, where there is a defender within 1 yard or less of the receiver at the time of completion or incompletion.

While Joe thinks it is cool that Mayfield is tracked as third-most aggressive quarterback, Joe thinks this may be misleading. On face value, it seems this could also be described as reckless. But consider who Mayfield is (was?) throwing to: Mike Evans, Emeka Egbuka and a little to Chris Godwin.

Who better to trust catching a ball in tight coverage than Evans? Same with Godwin in past years. And Joe has noticed on a fair share of Egbuka’s touchdown catches, he was covered very well.

It’s easy to be aggressive when you have stud receivers and the quarterback trusts them. It may be reckless if a quarterback only has lesser receivers.

When Rachaad White is wide open for the five yard checkdown and the O line is trying out for the Bay Area matador team, throw the farging ball to Rachaad.

That pass to Emeka Egbuka earlier this year passed through 2 narrow windows and it resulted in a game changing TD.

Not reckless if you don’t throw picks

Mayfield seems to have a little better sense of what he can get away with and what he can’t these days.

You can tell what type of Mayfield game we’re going to get by gauging his aggressiveness.

When it comes to Evans, if he’s one-on-one, it doesn’t matter the coverage, he’s open.

I guess Baker is assertive when he’s not being aggressive. 😚

You mean like throwing a fade to Sharp in the end zone? Sorry, I had to.

As to Evans one on one, it does matter when Evans is tearing down the field and the DB clubs him in the shoulder before the ball gets there, knocking him off his stride and driving him into the turf with no flag!

But, yeh, other than things like that.

As to Baker, i am trying to recall a touch pass that he has thrown this year.

His strategy, which has mostly succeeded, seems to be to drive the ball so hard that his receiver catches it or no one catches it.

I am not sure what happened last week when he double pumped to wide open Egbuka before under throwing the ball, but even that pass he drilled into the defender’s back.

Baker’s on his way to an interception riddled 2nd half. Bucs o line can’t handle the blitz and things are gonna get ugly. NE 27 TB 17
