Todd Bowles Says Bucs Have Changed Mentalilty; Should Fans?

October 14th, 2025

Powerful stuff yesterday from Todd Bowles, the fourth-winningest head coach in Bucs history.

Bowles says the team has changed its mentality to one more befitting a Super Bowl team.

“I think the mental toughness has gotten a lot better this year,” Bowles told SiriusXM NFL Radio. “We’ve kind of embraced the grind. You know, playing the first-place schedule, [players] used to look at that as playing all these teams in a row as a burden; now they look at it as a challenge.

“And it doesn’t matter who plays. I think they understand the assignment — to get where we gotta get to it is going to be a lot of different people every week. And that’s what the good teams do and that’s what we’re trying to become. So we’re kind of embracing the challenges week in and week out and guys are really stepping up and maturing, and we got great locker room leadership and their resiliency is outstanding.”

Lotta meat on that bone from Bowles. So players used to be uncomfortable with a tough schedule but now they embrace it.

Despite the Bucs having the best record in the NFC, a lot of Bucs fans still are penciling in losses for the team and figuring at least a few more are coming. Perhaps that needs to change, too?

Enjoy the grind! I been through many years of losing so this is great.

  2. WillieG Says:

It’s hard for long time fans to assume our beloved Bucs will beat any team. We’ve been abused so often by bad Buc teams over the years…….

Yeah, The Lost Decade but also all the gawd awful teams, coaches, and GMs before then.

We are like an abused spouse. We want to believe, we really do, but we have all of these scars…..

  3. infomeplease Says:

The way this team is playing how can you bet against them?

  4. Smarter than Joe Says:

    Love 5-1, riding high

But injuries and the awful pass defense will eventually catch up against good teams.

As long as they get to the bye at 6-2, then they can get healthy and see what happens then. Lot of season left, I’d love to be wrong about this team

  5. Billy Bucco Says:

If the defense isn’t in the bottom 10 with all the losing teams, I wouldn’t be skeptical.
The top 15 defenses outside Houston which is weird to me, have winning records.
There isn’t a good team around where Tampa is ranked defensively.

I understand we can beat anybody, but giving up the 8th most points in the league is NOT championship football.

  6. SteveK Says:

Go Bucs, hoping we see the pass rush get home against Goff. Need to collapse the pocket and we will have a puncher’s chance.

  7. ballwasher61 Says:

Ric Flair:” To be the Man ya gotta beat the man”. I never understood penciling in wins or losses. That Bowles comment is exactly what a solid team does and the way they think. At the end we will win because we will it.

  8. 813BUCBOI Says:

what good teams are you talking about clown!!!!!

you mean, ATL, SEA and SF…teams that we’ve beat….

or are you talking about the 1 team that beat us when we had 3 Turnovers and their QB threw for a whopping 130yards…that lost wasnt on the pass defense…that loss was on special teams and turnovers!!!!

you’ve been wrong all year clown!!!!

    6-1!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  9. Allen Lofton Says:

I like your thinking JoeBucsFan. Focus on the positive and good 👍 things happen. All the pieces are there for the Bucs to succeed. One of the ingredients includes is positivity. A winners mentality, that was Brady’s secret weapon and Baker is instilling that with his on field- leave nothing on the table mentality.

  10. BakerFan Says:

So the naysayers, or the abused Bucs fans from years past; if the Bucs beat the Lions and Bills, who are the good teams that they must beat from there to make you start believing or will you always have Loser Lament drape all over you? BTW, Bucs will beat the Eagles if they have to meet them again.

  11. Smarter than Joe Says:

Bucs Defensive Rankings after 6 games

    17th in Yards Allowed
    14th in Yards per Game
    22nd in Pass yards allowed
21st in Pass yards per game
    6th in Rush Yards Allowed
5th in Rush Yards per game allowed
    25th in Points Allowed
    24th in Points Per Game
    6 Turnovers

6 plus years of Todd Blows as the play caller and the results are the same every year. Top 10 run defense, bottom of the league in defending the pass. Defending this defense is laughable.

Bucs win in spite of Todd Blows and his soft scheme

  12. Roscoe Says:

It certainly appears the Baker Mayfield culture has certainly overshadowed the TB culture by far. The HC hasn’t changed so Baker should get all the credit.

  13. 813BUCBOI Says:

so BUCS have to have a top3 defense and top3 offense in order for some of you to believe this is a good team and contender….

obviously yall never played contact football lol…maybe flag and fantasy football lol…

our defense is currently ranked #11 in total defense….the year we won the SB our defense was ranked #8….

stats are for fantasy owners and losers!!!!!…Ws & Ls are the only stat that matters…

    6-1!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  14. ModHairKen Says:

When it was the Dungy-Gruden Era, I never thought they’d lose. I was always stunned. Especially the Defense. It was so reliable.

I fumed most of the SF game at how easy it seemed for Mac Jones to pile up yards. But then they only gave up 19 points.

These guys have now convinced me that they are as good as those teams. What is different is that this team is built on Offense.

How long and patiently has this fan base waited to have an elite QB? Some wild say Mike Evans is Top 10 of all time as a WR. But this team has never had a truly elite QB.

  15. Bosch Says:

It’s a good thing they are embracing atough schedule because an angry and talented opponent is up next.

  16. 813BUCBOI Says:

Bucs win in spite of Todd Blows and his soft scheme
    ***********************************************************

this is the same defense and scheme that won a SB, won 4 division crowns and is now 5-1!!!…

todd is proving stats and ranking dont matter…

you can throw out #s all you want but the BUCS are 5-1 and the defense is a huge part of that!!!!

clowns like you are just waiting for the next L is you can scream, told ya so lol…

    6-1!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  17. gbobucsfan Says:

If we were healthy….even slightly healthy, I would say we are a top 5 team. But Monday night will be the litmus test.

  18. buc4evr Says:

I don’t mind that we are playing the best teams in the NFL. What I don’t like is the horrendous injury situation. Seems like everyone has a bad hammy. It’s like being in a fight with one hand tied behind your back.

  19. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

It is a good team and NFC contender for the playoffs, but if it wants us to consider them as a Championship caliber team the defense has to be able to play consistently well the whole game. Top 3 no but to 10-12 yes. It’s not like they have been playing for a different DC every season. Look at the playoffs last year we had one of the best offense in the league but when they couldn’t quite get the job done, the defense lfopped all over the field and couldn’t get the ball back for the offense. Until it can get a consistent pass rush it will struggle against better offenses

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    WillieG Says
“It’s hard for long time fans to assume our beloved Bucs will beat any team. We’ve been abused so often by bad Buc teams over the years…”

Ain’t that the truth. That first winning season under Dungy was epic.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’ve been voting ‘Not Sure’ in the weekly poll. I did it once and they won, so now I don’t want to jinx it by changing. LOL

This is a really tough schedule though. I don’t recall having one this tough in the past. It’s gotten to where I look forward to division games just for a non-stressful win 😉

  22. JimBobBuc Says:

The defense needs a pass rush from the front four – without blitzing. The backend is slowly getting better despite losing some guys and they’re catching INTs. Bowles’ coverage messed with Mac Jones and he wilted, allowing some sacks. I don’t see Jared Goff missing a step next Monday – unless the Bucs put him on his back a few times.

  23. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’ll tell you one thing…when they win the Superbowl this year, the backups better get rings too.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:
“It is a good team and NFC contender for the playoffs, but if it wants us to consider them as a Championship caliber team the defense has to be able to play consistently well the whole game.”

Fair point. This past Sunday trended better. Hopefully it’s a sign that the young guys are finally clicking. And Reddick was beastly for a change. I think he’s starting to acclimate to the Bucs mentality.

  25. Smarter than Joe Says:

    @813Ladyboy

Please read and comprehend my post, I am happy with the record, I love being wrong about this team. The pass defense is a problem, as someone who watches the ALL 22, it’s a problem, it has continuously been a problem as long as Todd has been here.

I am sorry you are blinded by 5-1 and can’t see reality. The injuries and pass defense are going to catch up with them sooner or later. If the pass defense doesn’t improve, it’s on Todd.

  26. Aqualung Says:

    Sometimes……..wow.

Todd, who was the head coach when the players used to look at a first place schedule as a burden? Why was that the attitude? Who tolerated that attitude as acceptable?

    wtf smh #no.surprise

The data and facts are in black and white. The defense has lots of room for improvement in both phases, coming up against the NFL’s top offense. Save the “we’ll kill the Lions” BS. They can pass, they can run, they score, they have creativity. Consistency but also ditching the soft shell turtle, and playing like closing time against Eagles and Niners, gives the Bucs a chance.

On offense Bucs will miss Bucky, and even with Mikey back (if he’s back) the J&J phenomenon needs to show it’s not just a one hit wonder. And then there’s Pornstache against Hutch. That’s sure to go well. (Facepalm)

This is not a game anyone should be expecting a Bucs win. Hope for one, sure. Can they do it? Sure, but being a 4.5 point dog now and expanding as the week progresses indicates the probability is in the 25% range. That’s reality.

    Go Bucs.

  27. Aqualung Says:

Smarter – 813 girl has too much Pom Pom fuzz in her eyes to see reality. Just irrational blind exuberance with no temperance or tolerance for obvious improvement needs that are explained by objective fans. Somehow, objectivity now qualifies as hatred and calls for banishment. smh

  28. Bucnjim Says:

I’m pretty sure I heard the announcers say the Bucs weren’t blitzing at all last game. Maybe to contain McCaffrey.

  29. Billy Bucco Says:

    Buc Bonzai

You do know you have to believe the Bucs won because you checked Not Sure to jinx anything?

  30. Billy Bucco Says:

I actually agree with Smarter than Joe and don’t think he is a clown at all.

There is no “GOOD” team he is referring to obviously.
Yes we have played Good Teams.
Tampa is the Best team according to this weeks rankings.

That doesn’t mean they are flawless!!!!
We have seen this offense be top 5-10 for years now.

The defense IS the weak link no doubt about it.
Looking at Points Allowed ONLY this team ranks in the bottom 8.

Eventually the offense doesn’t score 30. That’s It.

Pretty easy to comprehend honestly when you don’t have your panties in a twist.

  31. Coconut Doughnut Says:

Since a trove of Bucs fans root for another team in town, we will always have half arsed fans. As a fan here in the Upstate SC, I am noticing a lot of fans coming out of the woodwork. They love Baker.

  32. KABucs Says:

I think this team can beat anybody. When the Bucs lose, that’s when I’ll be surprised. I had high hopes going into the season and even with all the injuries, they’ve proven to me I can keep my hopes high. It’s all about Baker and everyone else being ready.
There were people posting in here they didn’t think they’d win more than 10 games. That could be a possibility if we lose a few more starters but if we get more guys back, 13 to 14 wins is a real possibility. Let’s see where this goes! Go Bucs!

  33. orlbucfan Says:

Just having a handle called Smarter than Joe is pushing it. Wonder how long StJ has been a Bucs fan? I have been on board with the Bucs since 1979 when my beloved MIL informed me that yes, Central FL has a NFL team. That means I went through the true Dark Ages from around 1982/3 to 1995/6. Double Digit Loss seasons, one after the other. Other old-time loyal fans on here know exactly what I’m describing. Doug Williams cursing the team cos of cheapskate Culverhouse plus Williams losing his young wife. Lee Roy Selmon is a hero in these parts cos he retired a Buc. Eventual HOFamer Steve Young bolting out of here cos of Culverhouse yet again. The list is endless. Now, I am enjoying myself to the hilt. I’ve witnessed this franchise do a 180. It’s a Championship team with tons of class. I’m proud to be a Bucs fan. GO BUCS!!

  34. Crickett Baker Says:

If you watch Peyton Manning’s new “Undercovers,” you will see true Cowboy’s fans. They scream for their team win or lose. It reminded me what true fans look like. I hope we improve.

  35. unbelievable Says:

They just keep finding ways despite an insane amount of injuries. It’s incredibly impressive and you gotta give a lot of credit to Bowles and the crew for having them ready- even if the defense is still not championship caliber. Hopefully special teams has ironed out their kinks for the season.

  36. Beeej Says:

We beat the Falcons, who utterly OWNED the Bills and the Vikings. We beat the Niners (who beat the Rams). We beat the Seahawks. We beat the Texans, who utterly OWNED the Ravens

(Ok, that last one is pushing it a bit, Ravens suck right now)

Anyhow, I’m good with our place in the world

  37. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Not hard to understand playing a 1st place schedule and playing teams that are projected/annually are, some of the better teams in the league to seem daunting.

I could see a gradual progression of “aw man this is going to be tough” maturing into “we can hang with them” and can still go full “we play our style of ball, nothing can stop us” in regards to growing team mentality(and chemistry).

  38. Aqualung Says:

We lost to the Eagles, who suck.

  39. Colddecked Says:

All this talk about defensive rankings, we are 12th in total offense and 14th in total defense.

The truth is we are a fairly balanced team despite the vibe that we are riding the coat tails of the offense. They are both playing great in clutch time. The only unit that truly sucks is Special teams and theyre improving thankfully.

  40. orlbucfan Says:

We’ve got genuine fans on here who have been with the Bucs since the very beginning. I found out about them 4 years later. We’ve been through it, man. Culverhouse was a Curse, in more ways than one. Now, I’m feeling very proud and vindicated. My Bucs are not just champions; they’re champions with class. It’s nice to feel that way right now in a very troubled world. Go Bucs and Bucs Fans!! 6-1!!

  41. Geno711 Says:

It’s funny how things morph for the absolute Bowles haters.

We are historically lower than most years of defense points allowed during the years Bowles has been our DC. I think the only worse year was 2019 and the 30 Jameis interceptions and multiple fumbles by him — oh and some even being pick sixes.

The folks jump on that point now — it used to be all about our pass defense only. This year — we are apparently 8th or 9th worst. But only like 2 points a game really out of league average.

My eyeballs tell me that the Offense is the strength — the defense is not good or bad but average — and the special teams is the weakness.

For whatever reason, from 2019 till now — the tendency of Bowles as a coordinator is that his defense tends to get better as the season wears on.

Now each season is different — so we will need to wait and see but at this point — I am with the hoorays from 813BUCBOI — I have more optimism, even with all the injuries, for this Bucs team when the playoffs are underway.

My eyeballs said that was a good defensive effort last week that might not be replicated every week — but has a chance to be replicated many more times this season.

So, why not at the end of the year we see the Bucs having the 7th to 10th rated defense in yards allowed and points allowed. That seems in the grasp of my pewter-colored glasses.

And there you have it Joe — a fan changing their mentality as requested!

  42. AMI_Chris Says:

That’s because we fans have been watching NFL football for longer than these players have been alive. We know how quickly a season can turn in either direction. (See: Bills & Panthers) And we are always overly sensitive about the warts we see on our team. If the Bucs defense can look like it did in the second halves of the Eagles and 49ers games, great. But we remember the Seahawks gashing huge gains, scoring easily and needing to get bailed out by the offense. I’ll be nervous until Baker lifts that Lombardi Trophy — and then I’ll just be relieved. It’s hard being a fan!

  43. Geno711 Says:

Aqualung — you from Detroit area.

I grew up in suburb of Detroit.

All your constant posts about Dan Campbell and how great he is (don’t get it — his time management is some of the worst in the NFL) and two articles in a row mentioning that you think Detroit is easily taking the Bucs.

So, are you a Detroit fan — or just a little light trolling to Bucs fans. (I mean my gosh — suggesting that the point total is going up in Detroit’s favor as the week goes on and saying Bucs only have about a 25 percent chance to win). That’s your reality that Bucs only have a 25% chance to win. I think there is a whole nation of folks that would ask you to lay that line. If that is not trolling — or do you really think that was logic?

  44. MelvinJunior Says:

Let’s just get there first, but we’ve GOT TO come outta that bye-week FOCUSED and ON-FIRE. Seems-like, in the past, we have come out of the bye-week very sluggish before. We CAN’T have that. We just cannot start-out by taking an “L” to New England.

  45. jimmy Says:

fans should be fans, not cheerleaders. some people are mature enough to have a nuanced debate about all aspects about this team, some people ARE NOT BOI!!!!!!!1 19-1ILOVETOODDDDD!!!!!BOIs.

  46. 813BUCBOI Says:

bucs arent perfect but to say the defense is poor is BS…

the defense gives up yards but not points….

we have a couple flaws but to say the defense will come back to bit us is foolish!!!!…..

  49. MelvinJunior Says:

    #1 in Stephen A’s, “A-List.” #2 in Colin’s, “Herd Hierarchy” – he has KC #1.

  50. Defense Rules Says:

Smarter Than Joe … ‘6 plus years of Todd Blows as the play caller and the results are the same every year. Top 10 run defense, bottom of the league in defending the pass. Defending this defense is laughable. Bucs win in spite of Todd Blows and his soft scheme’.

Smarter than Joe, I don’t think you are. All 4 of your conclusions above aren’t supported by facts. That’s not sound analysis.

1 – Todd Bowles (you need to correct your spell-checker) has been our DC for 6 years, and the results have varied significantly. All the way from a #5 ranking to a #29 ranking (Points Allowed). Of importance though, so has the TALENT that was on our defense.

2 – Seems to me that Todd’s philosophy is based on ‘Stop the run first’ & make them one-dimensional. Obviously his priority is Run Defense (since 2019 we’ve ranked #1, #1, #3, #15, #5, #4 and this season #5 thus far in Rushing Yards Allowed). That averages roughly #5 over those 7 years.

When you do that at the NFL level, your Pass Defense is probably gonna pay a price (unless you’ve got off-the-charts talent). And it has (since 2019 we’ve ranked #30, #21, #21, #9, #29, #29 and this season #21 thus far in Passing Yards Allowed). That’s a sizable disparity, averaging roughly #23, but ranging from #9 ranking to #30.

3 – Defending this is really quite simple: Points Allowed is the bottom line for any defense. His first year (2019) the defense did terrible in terms of ranking (#29) BUT … they successfully transitioned to a whole new defense, and did it with a significant number of youngsters. This defense’s ranking improved dramatically in 2020 to #8 (and oh ya, we won the Super Bowl with it), and was even better in 2021 (#5). Then when Bowles got dual-hatted as HC AND DC in 2022, Bucs underwent a MAJOR REBUILDING that included major personnel changes on the defensive side. Still, our defense has ranked #13 in 2022, #7 in 2023 and #16 in 2024. That’s an average of a #8 ranking in Points Allowed starting after that 1st transition year (2019).

4 – And in terms of your bottom line that the ‘Bucs have been winning IN SPITE OF Todd Blows’ (your spell-checker still sucks), when you look at our defense’s performance over the 6 years (now 7) that Todd Bowles has been our DC it’s remarkably good. Todd plays the ‘Points Allowed Game’ better than most, and far too few ‘fans’ seem to appreciate the value of that. His defenses have been very good at holding opponents to FGs as opposed to surrendering TDs.

Yes sometimes that means giving up yardage down the field, but Todd’s defenses have been quite stingy when backed up close to the end zone. We’re doing terrible thus far this season in Red Zone TDs Allowed (rank #28 currently). But we ranked #9 in 2024, #3 in 2023, #30 in 2022, #6 in 2021, #11 in 2020 and tied for #4 in 2019. So from 2019 – 2024 that’s a rough average rank of roughly #10 (coulda been #5 or #6 ranking if not for 2022). That’s not that shabby.

Only point is Smarter Than Joe … Evaluate the BIG PICTURE when doing analyses, and give credit where credit is due. Things are usually not as wonderful as some say, nor as dismal as many others believe.

  51. #99 the big fella Says:

Defense rules, I agree with everything you just said!

  52. unbelievable Says:

    Good post DR.

I have been hard on Todd at various times for various things, but I have always said since day 1 of being Bucs fan back in the 90s, that the only thing that truly matters is points. And I will die on this hill.

That’s why offensive and defensive rankings based on yards drive me nuts. Yards are meaningless, with the exception that they can also dictate TOP, which is important. But all that matters is points. And you are correct, Todd’s defenses are focused on that above all else.

That said, I do hate seeing teams just eat up 8 – 15 yard chunk plays on us seemingly at will at times. It’s quite frustrating.

But we’re 5-1, and I don’t think any fan can be upset about that, ESPECIALLY with the staggering amount of injuries we have.

This is a very good team.

  53. Beeej Says:

Todd trades time of possession and yards in order to force them into naught but field goals. He won’t say it aloud, but it seems obvious

  54. Esteban85 Says:

It’s kinda like working out, you dread getting off the couch and going to the gym but once you get there and get it done you feel great. You keep up the good habit and eventually you get addicted to the great feeling and know that that suffering will equal happiness in the long run. Embracing that the struggle is the way and knowing that the true path to happiness is by suffering. Go Bucs! Rounding into a truly wise and strong team

  55. Esteban85 Says:

  58. GoneGator Says:

Our defense is improved and will continue to improve during the year.

Some of you will never stop cherry picking stats OR confusing the importance of them.

Please check stats against w/l %…..
What I think you’ll find is ypg allowed passing is one of the least important stats but the one the same people (critics) harp on.
    Run defense is more important.
Red zone defense is more important.
Limited explosive plays is more important.
    Creating turnovers is more important.
And of course points allowed is king.

    @aquagirl
Good to see the real you back after your hangover… Todd’s still your daddy and you’re back to your same old games criticizing people and things your childish little mind can’t understand.

I’ll take the pom pom shakers over the turd hunters any day…no matter what the “contest” is.

How about that zone coverage= 2 interceptions ?!!!

Lol GoneGator aqua is definitely a tool and a turd

  60. Rod Munch Says:

Give Bowles, Baker and the Bucs credit, they are absolutely going away from the norms so far this year.

In traditional Bucs years, the Bucs lose that game vs the Jets … but then again they win the game vs the Eagles. BUT, the Bucs then lose that game in Seattle, so they got a net positive out of mixing things up there.

Also, last week with Baker talking trash, when he’s got full of him self the last two season and started doing that, he promptly went out and played a bad game. This time, he talked trash, and backed it up – and of course it was even more impressive due to the lack of talent at WR.

It could be a real breakthrough year.

But people need to shut-up chanting MVP in week 6. How often does that ever work out? Week 16, absolutely, but week 6? Stop it, you’re just jinxing him and the Bucs.

Unless this new mentality really is at work, and maybe the non-Brady Bucs jinx is no longer in effect.

In the old sombrero with my dad and his dad for the first home win in 1977. I admire Dan Campbell for how he’s turned around a sorry franchise into a powerhouse, and his players run through walls for him as he does them.

I’m cheering for the Bucs to win Monday night but based on the wagering world, Bucs are a 1 in 4 shot to win. Maybe 1 in 3 at best. Lots of people realize what the Lions are great at on offense and what the Bucs are weak at on defense.

We’ve got genuine fans on here who have been with the Bucs since the very beginning.
    ^^^^
I am one of those fans. I used to post as Citrus County. I changed because I want to leave the past behind. Although TB and BA brought us a SB win that era brought a level of messiness not seen since the aforementioned “Culverhouse” years. The term fan, as you know, is short for fanatic and that is a term I’d rather not be described as being. I have tried to tone back my “emotional involvement” but true sports fans know that is hard to do. I commend the Glazers and Jason for keeping things stable after the serpiente episode. Only those who suffered through the “Culverhouse and Bo Jackson” episode would understand that with this team ANYTHING is possible.

Ironlung — Pretty sure no Vegas, Atlantic City or offshore organizations are giving 1/4 odds of winning.

You are the only clown suggesting that.

I am certainly not going to attack any poster personally here. (Though I have been tempted to do so on occasion.) I am pleased to see people defending Todd Bowles here with good info and good reasoning.

I will add that it seems that our defense plays worse in the first half and makes some sort of adjustments in the second half that work. That is what I see this year in our first 6 games.

    Go Bucs!!

I agree that all of this hype surrounding our guys is exaggerated. It is too early to talk Super Bowl results or league MVP. Enjoy this team while it is riding high but don’t get carried away.

    Go Bucs! Walay Detroit!
