Todd Bowles: Chris Godwin “Fibula” Injury Unrelated To Ankle Surgery

October 10th, 2025

Chris Godwin update.

Earlier today, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, among others, Twittered that Chris Godwin is out for Sunday’s game with the 49ers.`

Godwin all week has been unable to practice in what the Bucs’ injury report deemed “fibula.”

After having his ankle destroyed last year in a game against the Crows and needing two surgeries to repair it, Godwin finally got back on the field against the Eagles in Week 3.

Last week in Seattle, Godwin injured his fibula but Bucs coach Todd Bowles said this morning it was a different area of his fibula that was injured. So this new injury is unrelated to his surgically rebuilt ankle.

“It is a different … a different part of his leg,” Bowles said. “He is week-to-week with that one.”

Bowles claimed he has no idea how Godwin was injured.

“I don’t know if it was a hit or a twist,” Bowles said. “I just saw him limp off.”

So, if there is any good news to take away from this, it is that Godwin is not being affected by last year’s injury.

    Phew.

  2. Football 1 Says:

Absolutely good news and really happy for Chris!!! We all should

  3. KABucs Says:

But was it the same leg? It can still be related if it was the same leg because that leg is not going to be as strong or flexible as the joints and such in the other leg one would think. And then, neither leg, as well as his entire body, is fully game ready yet. It’s going to take a few games that he actually plays in with no new injuries.

  4. ocala Says:

It must be a stress reaction, which is very common for athletes when coming back from injuries. If it was a stress fracture, he would be out another 6-8 weeks. If it is a stress reaction he can probably play in a week or two, but they are going to need to limit his snaps and running. He will need to gradually increase his running and snaps as the season goes on. If they are prudent about it he should be fine.

  5. PSL Bob Says:

Depending on the outcome of the next two games, we may be able to sit Evans and Godwin until after the bye. If we come out of the Lions game at 6-2, I say sit them through the bye week. If we’re 5-3, we should probably have at least one of them back on the field to ensure no more losses while we get the whole bank back together.

  6. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

He will never be the same again. He damaged the same injury after coming back too soon. We should never have signed him back. The sky is falling. We are doomed. Anarchy!!!

Did I get that right or can we all just settle down on this?

Rest up and come back swinging Chris!

  7. 813BUCBOI Says:

    rest up chris…

    5-1!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Could be overcompensating perhaps, putting strain on other parts. He was definitely ahead of schedule in my mind. Hopefully it’s just him getting back into playing shape and a one-week set back.

  9. SlyPirate Says:

“It is a different … a different part of his leg,”

    Seriously, coach?

Who wants to tell him? Maybe someone can just play the song, “The leg bone is connected to the thigh bone.”

  10. Defense Rules Says:

The last thing any of us want to see is for Chris to get back out on the field too soon and do even more damage to that ankle or that lower leg. Bucs have 3 games to play until our BYE (49ers, Lions, Saints). We’ve got enough weapons, even without Godwin, Evans, McMillan and maybe even Bucky, to compete in all 3 games. Let’s not rush any of them back; focus on the BIG PICTURE and make sure they’re all well-healed up for the end of the season push AND the playoffs.

I love the way that White, Egbuka, Sheperd & Otton in particular responded in the Seattle game. Just those 4 were caught 19 of the 21 targets they got for 298 yards & 2 TDs. Plus Rachaad added another 2 TDs rushing. They all rose to the challenge, and will again. So did one of our other rookies, Tez Johnson.

  11. Costa Rica John Says:

These injuries are all crazy this year.
Once Evans iand Godwin are both back maybe rotate them by games.
That way one is always healthy.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How do you feel now about us drafting a WR with our 1st pick with our top 3 WRs out Evans, Godwin, McMillan

  13. Bucsarg Says:

Look at all the great players we have out here n injury. We are still a top 5 team. By the time Evans, Godwin, McMillan and Bucky are all back Tez will.have had lots more reps and will be a tested tool. Fresh legs on every play. Baker will be the envy of every NFL QB. Our back up guys have been stepping up. If our starters are healthier towards the end of the season than now e

  14. Bucsarg Says:

    Oops
    We will be scary.

  15. Bobby M. Says:

Watch our OC continue to make the offense function even with 6 of his starters out. If he does, we’ll be on the hunt for another OC as he’ll be the next hot coaching candidate for teams looking for a new HC.

  16. Aqualung Says:

Bucs Medical will have him go week to week now through the bye and Wednesday before the game after the bye, will decide he needs surgery and will be lost for the rest of the season.

  17. Bucs4Ever Says:

it’s impossible to know if the original injury caused this new one

  18. Oxycondomns Says:

this feels like the wirfs mishap . why wouldnt have they put him on a snap count? its not like he was playing awesome to begin with. hope it turns out well for him

  19. Hodad Says:

    It’s Tez, and Miller time!

  20. jimmy Says:

sucks for chris. get well soon.

  21. Jeff and Jack's grandpa Says:

Of course the rod muncher knows everything just ask her

  22. sethery Says:

this is very good news. even if he can’t play this week. it is absolutely an upside that it is not a complication with his prior injury and that they’re listing him as week to week.

  23. Esteban85 Says:

I have a hard time believing any reports regarding injuries coming out of one Buc

  24. Jeffrey Becker Says:

i don’t believe Bowles on this one. More specifically, I think there’s a good chance it is related and he doesn’t know yet. Optimism is okay though.

  25. Vanessa Anne Says:

I’m not surprised but I am concerned.

Chris has been out for a year, and that was a brutal injury.

It’s one thing to give 110% in practice, which we all know Chris did.

Taking nasty hits in a game is an entirely different ball of wax.

It makes sense that he might favor fhe ankle just a bit, which puts a strain on other parts of his legs. Not to mention all of the twisting and turning, etc.

I thought he played more than he should have in Seattle.

Let him rest. We have depth in our WR room and those guys are stepping up.

    Our entire offense is humming.

We’ll need him more toward the end of the season.

  26. orlbucfan Says:

We are damned lucky CG14 didn’t hang up his cleats and retire after the 2nd dirty season ending injury he’s suffered in what, 4 seasons? Let him heal. Let the young pups like Tez, etc. catch a few balls. Bet the 49ers wish they had our problems, and the refs love them. 5-1, Bucs!!

  27. Cometowin2 Says:

Get well Chris! God bless Chris Godwin!

  28. garro Says:

I hope this is true but with Bowles? I have gotten to the point that I kind of disreguard the stuff he says. Especially anything regarding injuries.

    Go Bucs!
