Charlie Heck: Impotent Start Doomed Bucs

September 28th, 2025

Slow start doomed Bucs.

The defense woke up in the second half. One Bucs tackle says the game shouldn’t have needed a heroic effort by the defense if the offense only did its job.

While the Bucs’ defense was dominant in the second half, the offense also showed a pulse and damn near pulled out a win.

Right tackle Charlie Heck told Joe if the offense only had some first-half drives where they played to their talents, the Bucs could have won this game.

“We have to start fast,” Heck said. “In the second half we began to gain our identity and so what we want to on offense.

“We have to start that [earlier] and not get behind early. We have to take what we did in the second half and use that [energy] in the first half].”

A Dallas Goedert catch of a shovel pass for a five-yard touchdown, where he ran right past SirVocea Dennis, followed two minutes later by a Jake Elliott field goal gave Gang Green a 24-3 lead with just over four minutes left in the half.

Heck added that Philadelphia had a “great defense” but he strongly noted that Bucs fans could be celebrating a fantastic win right now rather than drowning their sorrows in a sorry loss.

If there’s been a consistent trait of the Bowles era, its been showing up unprepared to start games.
You mean the Bucs offense leading the NFL in opening-drive scores last year?–Joe

  2. Adam’s Angry Says:

I blame Mike Evans and his lack of attending to his legs in the gym.

No one remembers that that guy knelt for the national anthem on Veterans Day.

    I do.

I will never forgive him. And his lack of performance when we meet him, the most, will never be forgotten. His stats say “Hall of Fame.“ But his performance says carpet bagger.

  3. Woodman Says:

    Wow really?

  4. PhilCogg Says:

Adam IS angry. I bet everyone wants to talk to you at a party. Take a deep breath, you’ll still be an idiot in the morning.

  5. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Right tackle Charlie Heck told Joe if the offense only had some first-half drives where they played to their talents, the Bucs could have won this game.“

This holds true this week, and last week.

  6. Christos Says:

    What Davenport said.
As good as the Defense has played at times the team has started the games
    Atlanta TD in 1st possession
    Houston TD in 1st possession
    Jets FG in 1st possession
    Phily TD in 1st possession
If that is not unprepared then i dont know what is

    Adam needs a hug
You should get banned from here

  8. Bojim Says:

    Adam is a dou**e.

  9. Tucker Says:

I knelt when I proposed to my wife, what a dirtbag I am, crazy she said yes.

  10. St.Pete Salty Buc Says:

Didn’t know Todd was the offensive play caller. I was under the impression he was DC/HC?

  11. St.Pete Salty Buc Says:

He was talking about the defense getting ran through every first drive this season.

  12. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

    “Phily TD in 1st possession“

Our offense got the ball first big guy, and got it right back after the opening drive and did what with the ball?

  13. Adam’s Angry Says:

I challenge any of you fake Bucs to present something contradicting anything I said as non- factual.

    Mike Evans is injury prone.

Mike Evans has hamstrings of the consistency of spaghetti noodles.

    Bring it.

  14. Jmarkbuc Says:

Grizzard got shown up.. Vic Fangio is no joke

Encouraging that he got something going in the second half, but you can’t start that slow and win.

  15. Oxycondomns Says:

bowles has nothing to do with offense preparation those guys went on to be head coaches. how many times do you hear bowles makes good adjustments. its because he gets out prepared . when he is playing against the likes of raheem the dream and aaron glenn he looks like a genius

  16. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Adam the fragile snowflake.

  17. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

    “Bring it”

LOL, OMG and a ROFL to you good sir. It’s a football team blog comment section. Settle down keyboard prize fighter, we’re just talking ball. It’s not that serious.

  18. jimmy Says:

grizzard is flailing. its pretty obvious.

  19. TampaBayBucFan Says:

    ME 13 1000 yards for 10 straight years……can’t be too injured….

    I didn’t like the kneel, but everyone deserves a 2nd chance…..

  20. #99 the big fella Says:

Adam’s angry.. lol you hit the crack pipe before you said that nonsense about Mike evens?

  21. Sapp 2 Fundamentally Sound Says:

Don’t think anyone can objectively judge Grizz at this point.
To say next man up because injuries are not an excuse is about bottom line winning or losing.

But, to not take into account the fact that injuries and absence of quality component players have seriously affected what plays he can even call is short sighted. He is playing/calling from a position of weakness. Literally missing 1 or 2 players every play because he has to help weak links with additional personnel.

The biggest factor being the lack of consistency in the O line. Grizz can’t even get into his playbook to be creative at this point. The Tight Ends are being used more for blocking than passing options .

  22. PSL Bob Says:

That’s all right. We’ll get em next time (in the playoffs).

    I do.

    I will never forgive him.

Veterans Day in 2016 was the 11th. Evans knelt 2 days after that, dummy.

Kneeling is actually way to show a sign of respect for the troops, while protesting the government.

    Educate yourself, numbnuts.

  24. purplebeard Says:

Can anyone tell me why #8 is still here? Are we that depleted?

  25. Boomer Says:

How can you judge the OC on this game when he started with 14 points down…
    SVD?
Bowles and his coaching staff was exposed today.

  26. Rod Munch Says:

unbelievable – No, that’s not what happened at all.

Evans was being a BLM retard throwing a hissy fit about 45. Dirk called him into office, gave him the business, showed him Tillman’s jersey and what the flag means, and Evans, to his credit, came out and said he was an idiot and apologized for making it about himself, and promised never to do anything like that again. Nothing but respect for Evans for doing that, which is a lot harder to do than the idiots who just like to pretend it was anything else other than spitting on the flag.

  27. purplebeard Says:

    Boomer, I agree

  28. purplebeard Says:

Sorry, I don’t like to throw shade, but I watched #8 looking adrift on several plays; important plays. Is our coach’s scheming too complicated for him?

  29. richbucsfan Says:

Against top tier teams, the Oline, particularly the right side, will be a source of disaster. While this is the NFL and anyone’s Oline should be able to handle itself without an assist from the TE’s, this Oline is the exception. At least one TE needs to assist as if he was a guard or tackle. As, but true. Nothing to say about special teams or really bad mistakes (being kind). On to the next game.

  30. Bucinator Says:

Lost a nice bottle of bourbon today. We should have won this one. Sure, we definitely had some let downs on both sides of the ball however we had some zebras that hurt us too. I believe we could have won today if not for our first two possessions. Baker’s INT was a sure TD of not for that ball being tipped. Can’t wait to see them again when we’re healthier.

  31. Capt.Tim Says:

    3-1.
    First place in NFC South
4 years of NFC South Championships or a SuperBowl.
And you miserable whiners are crying about losing to the defending Super Bowl Champions?
    Absolutely pathetic.

You should have watched that creamsickle horror show in the 80ties and 90ties.
Those teams sucked so bad, they weren’t even allowed to watch the playoffs on TV!

  32. unbelievable Says:

@Rod – it literally has nothing to with BLM, nor did it have anything to do with the troops. Kneeling never was about the troops. Only low IQ idiots claim otherwise.

I’ll end my comments there before this whole section gets deleted.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

unbelievable – LOL! Where do you think that movement came from? Are you not aware of this guy named Colin in his piggy socks, saying the US is awful while kneeling and spiting on the flag. What kind of revisionist history are you pitching?

  34. Goodbuc'nlife Says:

Rod Munch- this is for you.
The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to protest through its guarantees of freedom of speech, assembly, and the right to petition the government. This constitutional protection applies to peaceful demonstrations and allows people to express their views, even unpopular ones, without fear of government censorship or retaliation.

  35. SOFIERCE Says:

The Eagles looked at us as a serious threat and came to Tampa dialed in with their offense, defense and special teams prepared and ready to play.

They had special plays just for us such as the fake tush push. And they were set to respond to our blitz packages. They came out and played their best well executed physical brand of football. And the truth is they held their foot to our neck the entire first half of this game we could not do anything to wiggle free. And they exposed our weakness, which is special teams mainly

Second half of the game, they took the foot off the pedal and thought that they could just close it out by burning time and figured they extinguished the light of Tampa by showing us, whose boss earlier . However, they did not understand how scrappy this team is, and we crawled and clawed our way back into a fight and by that point they did not have the momentum and we did and for the first time they saw who they were effing with.

Unfortunately, too many mistakes were already made by Tampa and the refs did not help and they eek out a win, but we will see them again in the playoffs. Everybody just relax we haven’t played our best football yet.

  36. BucaneroJim Says:

    M A G A…. Make Anger Go Away

  37. Esteban85 Says:

Thanks Capt. Tim! A little perspective is what these miserable gripers need.

With that being said, the game was winnable but for a few issues with refs, special teams play, and that disgusting decision from Baker in the red zone!

Being only the 4th game of the season and we being an injury mired team, I am full of hope and optimism for our beloved Buccaneers. Let’s learn from this loss, get better in key areas, get healthy and beat these damn iggles in the playoffs!
