Baker Mayfield Thinks Eagles Are Misguided Coming To Tampa Early

September 25th, 2025

Joe loves how Baker Mayfield got into a national forum and tried to jump inside the Eagles’ heads.

Bravo!

Rather than travel to Tampa on Saturday for Sunday’s 1 o’clock game against the Bucs, the Eagles are flying in Friday to take an extra day to adjust to the hot weather.

Mayfield hopped on Mark Sanchez’s Rearview podcast yesterday, a FOX Sports property, and said he doesn’t expect the Eagles will accomplish that goal.

“We’ll have a good game plan to try and tire these guys out, Mayfield said. “Advantage for us, we’re in Tampa; the heat, they’re not used to that. I know there’s already been the stories that broke about them coming down to Tampa a day early. I don’t necessarily think that helps them. One day doesn’t get you acclimated to this humidity. (laughs) So I think honestly it makes them think about it more when they get down here earlier.”

The Bucs beat the Eagles soundly last September in Tampa. Eagles starting center Cam Jurgens left the game with cramps, so did defensive tackle Jalen Carter. Other Eagles had cramps, too.

After the game, Joe saw then-Eagles cornerback CJ Gardner-Johnson soaking in a kiddie pool filled with ice water in the tunnel near the Bucs’ locker room entrance surrounded by paramedics and trainers.

Yeah, the heat got in the Eagles’ heads. And maybe, Mayfield laughing at their 2025 strategy will get in their heads, too.

I love it. Baker is the consummate pro. Use whatever tools you have to put your team in the best competitive position. If the Eagles are thinking about the heat and humidity they will succumb to the heat and humidity.

  2. Just Visiting Says:

Baker is absolutely right, the human body just doesn’t acclimate that quickly. Better to recognize that your players +won’t+ be acclimated and focus on how to manage game day conditions.

just said this in a previous post lol….

arriving a day early only works for cold weather games lol…..

cold weather games, you go out there in the cold, run around and your body warms up….you get acclimated…

down here in this FLA heat, its hot, you run around and your body gets hotter lol….you dont get acclimated lol..you get exhausted dehydrated lol…

get those big DTs running side to side and they’ll be gassed by the 2nd quarter lol….

    4-0!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. TampaBayBucFan Says:

TBBF arrived two days early and that didn’t help me with the heat at all!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  5. Josh Says:

When teams arrive early to prepare for cold weather, it makes physiological sense. Cold exposure affects muscle stiffness, grip, and coordination, and early arrival helps athletes adapt gear, breathing patterns, and movement strategies. While the body doesn’t dramatically “adapt” to cold, it can improve circulation and cold tolerance slightly over time.

In contrast, arriving early to “adjust” to extreme heat (100°F/38°C and above) is less about adaptation and more about survival. The body doesn’t become significantly more heat-resistant—it simply learns to manage stress through better hydration, pacing, and sweat regulation. Prolonged heat exposure increases the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and reduced performance. There’s no meaningful physiological “gain” from long exposure to dangerously high temperatures.

**Bottom line:** Cold acclimation is about adapting function; heat management is about avoiding harm. Treat them differently. As they are completely different beast… Bucs should almost IV every player at halftime every game hydration is KEY!!

  6. Bartow Buc Says:

The Bucs and the heat are very much in the Eagles heads !! The Buccaneers have defeated the Eagles six times in the last 7 games !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Eagles !!

  7. ElioT Says:

Punch them straight in the mouth with the running game and kill them with the PA passing game.

Defense needs to shut Hurts down early.

Make them want to go back to Philly by the second half.

  8. Geno711 Says:

Bucs have an advantage on heat acclimatization. That does not surprise the Joe’s or me.

The Bucs are disadvantaged because of chronic, unrelenting heat exposure.

I think the Joe’s get this but have not mentioned it once in all the heat articles.

It’s a continuous, day-in-and-day-out exposure to high temperatures and humidity. The body needs more energy to recover from this and it therefore takes more time to bounce back to elite levels of your physicality.

I am pretty sure the Bucs — with all the advanced data — can tell which guys get effected more on game day and have a harder time finishing games.

And I am glad to see Baker mentioning how much easier it is to pass in the 4th quarter — not because of anything else but the defensive backs on the other team are tired and have a harder time keeping up anymore.

I think more practices under the AC tent make sense at this time of the year. So, as we lessen the strain on the players and they are in peak condition for the actual game.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

These things don’t work. It’s blocking, tackling, catching, running and practice that works. Oh, and talent.

  10. Aqualung Says:

Since the heat got to the Bucs according to The Genius, and the Jets seriously outplayed the Bucs through the heat in the 4th quarter, it’s not selling well to imply the Bucs are used to it. Baker should probably have asked Todd to speak for him on Sanchez’ podcast. Sanchez could have asked Todd about his foot. It would have been informative.

  11. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Last week it affected our defense too so there’s that

  12. Bartow Buc Says:

Pound That Rock !! Shut down Barkley !! Contain Hurts !! Bring the Heat !!

Go Bucs !! Beat the Eagles !!

  13. Addb Says:

Man I hope for a miracle but given our injuries I can’t see us winning this

  14. HC Grover Says:

Bakefield has potential. Good QB and a character to boot. Could be a super star.

  15. Dano507 Says:

I hope the Eagles Dline doesn’t get acclimated to this heat because Bucs Oline needs all the help they can get!

  16. Hodad Says:

Heat almost took down our own defense in the 4th quarter Sunday. Be careful what you wish for.

  17. Daryl Green Says:

How is our offense line, because I watched the jets game again yesterday, on one drive we so many holding penalties. Who is this Hagg a right guard Jesus, horrible.

  18. AC Says:

Eagles better get their weight up!

  19. stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW the Sanchez podcast is now up on YouTube and I watched it this morning.

It was the most entertaining show I watched today!!! Two guys who have lived the experience and swapped great stories and busted each other’s balls. It was great entertainment and very informative.

I also saw my first full length interview of EE. Kay had him on her show which also now up on Youtube.

Kay was Kay…gushing for sure but she did get in some great questions as well.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

I happen to be a straight, intelligent, female fan who is GLAD to hear the emphasis on the d###ed humidity down here. I’m married to an ECFL cracker, and I might as well be one myself. The weather down here is murder. This state lives off tourism so it’s not advertised. So far, no h-bombs as in hurricanes. We’ve already gone through that drill a few years ago vs. NOLA. Who is this Kay? Male eye candy. I just want my team to WIN!! Go Bucs!!

  21. SenileSenior Says:

Kay is male eye candy. She is also savvy about football and does a good interview. It seems to me that she is biased toward the Bucs, though. That is why she gushes.

    Go Bucs!!

  22. Destinjohnny Says:

We see playing a bama Georgia All star team.
Southern Boys raised in the heat

  23. orlbucfan Says:

Kay better be savvy about football. Twice as much as the male fans. I don’t pay attention to her cos I know the way it works in life. Plus, I know enough about the game to be a diehard fan.

  24. Cybersecurity_intern Says:

Imagine this guy winning a superbowl before Allen or Lamar? One can dream.

  25. Ed Says:

You never get used to playing in this heat, especially in Tampa, which “feels” much higher than the actual temperature due to a lack of breezes + the high humidity. The East coast of Florida doesn’t feel as hot as it does here because the Atlantic has more breezes whereas the Gulf is like a bathtub. One of the issues in Raymond James is there is no air movement down on the field. The city and the Glazers have to put up some sun shields to create a shadier field.
