Matt Stafford Talks Baker Mayfield

September 23rd, 2025

Asked about revived Colts quarterback Daniel Jones this week, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford started talking about Baker Mayfield.

On Tom Brady’s old podcast, Let’s Go!, Brady quit and essentially was replaced by Stafford, Maxx Crosby and retired scribe Peter King, who predicted the Bucs would be so bad they would land the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. (Then King whined because Bucs fans didn’t understand him.)

Stafford reflected that Jones’ explosion in Indianapolis reminds him of his Rams time with Mayfield. Per Stafford, it’s important to let a veteran quarterback getting a fresh start feel free and in control.

“We had a little bit of that experience when Baker, you know, stopped here for half a season,” Stafford said. “A bunch of teams were kind of moving on and going around and Baker got here, got the opportunity to play for Sean [McVay] for eight games or seven games whatever it was, and really revitalize his career. And look what he’s doing in Tampa now. So, quarterback, you get better as you go. I feel like as long as your body can hold up the mental aspect of the game becomes more and more prevalent as you get older.”

Yes, the great quarterbacks get better with age, and they’re even capable of recovering strong from a rough season in their 30s, as well.

Stafford himself found a new football home at 33 years old and put a ring on his finger in the same year.

Too bad the Rams became the 2nd team to win a Super Bowl in their own stadium right after we became 1st.

  2. Truth be Told Says:

Yes, Baker has literally been “Born Again” in Tampa in more ways than one. We are lucky to have him, and he is lucky to find the right team in the Bucs. Go BUCS!!!

  3. GoneGator Says:

Baker seems to be playing pi$$ed the last few games.

  4. gp Says:

Baker may not be “carrying” the team, but the team certainly seems to be feeding off of his “will” to win. (Yes, even the coaching staff)
I may just be a ‘homer’, but that’s what I’m seeing.

Being durable as an NFL quarterback is a talent in and of itself and so far it’s hard to complain about Bakers durability. He is more like a running back with a cannon for an arm than the typical NFL quarterback. And for the times he is hurt he won’t sit out. He has to have a high pain tolerance. Either that or he’s a masochist because he refuses to quit.
I heard Baker was voted Mayor of Clutchville and lives at 3-0 Victory Lane with all the other Clutchaneers. Oh how the times have changed.

Baker makes Cleveland decision makers look like simpletons

  7. JimBobBuc Says:

As much as I sometimes beat up Bowles, he made a great decision bringing in Baker and Canales. Canales was a positive influence during games with Bake. He had a positive attitude with Bake and calmed him down during tough times. Bake was able to relax and just compete. Now Bake is confident he can beat anybody and pull out wins.

Can’t say it enough,we got lucky getting Baker. He also found his perfect fit with the Bucs. And Baker keeps notes too. Love his grit!

  9. Gipper Says:

Only sorry the Browns aren’t on Bucs schedule this year.

  10. Beeej Says:

I can’t WAIT for is to play at Cleveland, I might even drive up there

Are the Bucs undefeated with Trask starting last 3 games!? Asking for a friend

“Baker makes Cleveland decision makers look like simpletons”

That’s because they ARE simpletons. The Baker screw up is just one of many ways this team has been managed since the Truckstop mogul stepped in.

Sadly in America if somebody makes a ton of money in one area, or succeeds massively, it’s assumed he’s automatically qualified to succeed in others.

Man, those Ram unis are so gaudy, my eyes hurt. Ugh! Still more praise for Bake coming from a very respected peer. Baker deserves it cos he has earned it. So, the Rams won a SB in their crib. Big whoop. Bucs were the first to do it. stpete is absolutely correct about the BS emphasis on money in this country. The Cleveland ownership isn’t the only braindead one who thinks they’re special cos they’re $rich$. I feel for their fans cos plenty of us Buc faithful have walked in those very same shoes down here.

  14. Aqualung Says:

Did he mention anything about laughing his head off at Todd leaving Cupp wide open and driving into FG range to win the playoff game that Brady heroically tied after being down 27-3?

  15. Tillerrick Says:

The Bucs are doing great so far. I hope it continues through to the playoffs and and hopefully another SB win. GO BUCS!!

  16. RedBuc1999 Says:

We are lucky to have obtained Baker after Brady. Of all the QBs we could of ended up with , Baker always plays with a chip on his shoulder, which is the kinda mindset we needed after Brady.

  17. David Weaver Says:

Let’s be clear, it was never a matter of talent or lack there of that was responsible for the down years in his career. He has always been a legitimate starter in the NFL, it was a result of the incompetence of the two most dysfunctional franchises in professional sports, Cleveland and Jacksonville.

  18. Zavier Says:

I’ve said it before, Baker has always been “Him” to use a younger generations slang. Bakers struggles at previous Organizations was more a reflection on the chaos and ineptitude of those organizations than on him
Baker gets to the Buc’s, gets some good weapons, and has exploded into the spotlight.

I love Tom Brady, I do, Brady is the GOAT. But the Buc’s are Baker’s team, in a way no other QB could do it. They see him leaving it all on the field.
