Bucky Irving Raves About Baker Mayfield

Bucky Irving

Bucky Irving always ready to roll with Baker Mayfield.

One thing Joe knows from experience: Bucky Irving does not like to talk to reporters after a game.

Joe has tried to talk to Bucky after games. Once at his locker in New Orleans, once after a home game when he tried to sneak out before reporters were allowed into the locker room and Joe cornered him. Each time Bucky was not at all happy.

But last night it seemed Bucky found time to talk to former Bucs running back Shady McCoy and Emmanuel Acho. They co-host “Speakeasy,” a live postgame show where they review each game and speak to players on winning teams.

McCoy and Acho got Bucky to talk about Baker Mayfield. Let’s just say Bucky has no fear with Mayfield near.

“Man, that’s my dawg,” Bucky said of Mayfield. “That’s a guy I will take with me into a dark alley because I know he will turn out [OK].

“Those are the type of quarterbacks you want around. They’re competitive, they want to win a football games, man. I will go to war with him any day of the week.”

Joe finds it so cool that Bucs players, from Lavonte David to Bucky and dozens in between, gravitate to Mayfield. They all admire his grit and determination and guts and bulldog mentality. And damn if the guy isn’t becoming one of the most clutch quarterbacks in the league, whether it is his timely running for first downs or his fourth-quarter touchdowns.

The last time a quarterback led a team on game-winning drives with less than two minutes left in back-to-back road games was none other than Dan Marino himself in 1999.

Pretty cool company for Mayfield.

Nice. Shady McCoy can swallow his anti-Baker rhetoric like the whole hog.

  2. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

I love that McCoy had to hear that. He is a well known Baker hater.

  3. Hammerhead Says:

17 games is a lot of games. Baker’s knee almost got buckled over tonight.

The reason a low scoring game was because both o-lines were inept as far as playoff caliber teams go.

A about health and stay ahead and run the ball.

Again, the o-line is kinda decimated. Fortunately the Texans were too.

  4. Davyboy Says:

Since becoming a Buc, Baker has more TD’s in the 4th quarter or OT than any other QB in the league. Maybe this will be the last lie about Baker to die from the haters, that he isn’t clutch. 😉

  5. adam from ny Says:

white, when in the game, was straight beasting out there…

with some nice vision at times too

  6. adam from ny Says:

chubb is a total shell of his former self…

looks like a totally different runner out there…

it like he has no legs anymore

  7. David Says:

That was such a great gutsy win against a really good defense while having no offensive line.
    Egbuka seems injured,
    The running game showed up.
The defense held its own but starting to get concerned about the four man pass rush, especially with KANCEY getting injured

  8. MadMax Says:

When Baker was closing his eyes at that moment on the bench (you saw it), that was the dog digging deep into himself in how to fix this. Always there.

  9. Defense Rules Says:

Baker had two 4th qtr comebacks in 2024. He now has two already in 2025. THAT’S CLUTCH

  10. Hodad Says:

    MVP! MVP!!

  11. heyjude Says:

Great video! Joe has said it in some of his previous posts, “Baker is Houdini.” So true, he is something else to watch. His fancy feet keep on a moving. So much grit. I bet he is really sore today though.

    Hodad – Yes, MVP.

  12. Stpetematt Says:

    Incredible game!

  13. BucU Says:

In regard to this weeks injury report I recommend listing the players who AREN’T injured. It’ll be a much smaller list and much less work.

  14. Jason Says:

When Bucky said Baker would “turn out” there wasn’t an unspoken “ok” it meant that Baker would show up and have his (Bucky’s) back.

  15. Bosch Says:

It all began with the 2003 opener in Minnesota with Baker’ stiff arm during a scramble for a first down. He won over his team mates and found his home with the Bucs as their first true franchise quarterback.

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Read a wrap up of this game from a non-Buc source. Plenty of kudos for Feisty Bake. You should have seen the comments from the Cleveland area. Man, are they up in arms over losing Baker! And Bowles rescued Baker off the NFL scrap heap. It’s just incredible. I’ve walked in the Browns’ fan shoes, and worse as a Bucs fan. Still shaking my head.

  17. Aqualung Says:

Shady McCoy needs to be given a Cleveland Steamer.

  18. GJ Says:

Some on here like to take digs on Baker and have even called him just a game manager. That performance should end that silly talk. He carried us to a thrilling victory. No one is perfect but he’s plenty good enough!

  19. D-Rok Says:

We are witnessing Mayfield mature into a better-than-average NFL QB right in front of our eyes. When Bake first came to TB, I wasn’t sure what we were getting, and now I sense Baker has found his identity.

I just hope he doesn’t get hurt with his playing style. SLIDE, MAN, SLIDE!!! 😉

  20. Kenton Smith Says:

D-Rok. “You” are witnessing Baker mature into a better than average NFL QB. The rest of America is witnessing Baker mature into an elite NFL QB.

  21. Esteban85 Says:

    Baker is elite

  22. dmatt Says:

Any Hassan Reddick siting? Houston, we have a problem!

  23. Anyhony Says:

That Baker magic also came against an elite defense.
