Josh Grizzard Will Stay On The Sidelines Calling Plays

August 14th, 2025

New Bucs playcaller Josh Grizzard.

Everybody associated with the Buccaneers seems to love the team camaraderie.

Heck, Jamel Dean said the club is better than the one winning the Super Bowl four years ago.

The postive vibes are something rookie offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard feels, too, so he told Joe today in the bowels of the Steelers’ stadium in Pittsburgh.

That vibe is a reason Grizzard will be back on the sidelines calling plays against the Steelers on Saturday night. Prior to the season, Grizzard wasn’t sure where he would call games and said it could be sky high in a coach’s booth, where he was last season as one of Liam Coen’s eyes above the field.

After preseason Week 1 against Tennessee calling games on the field, Grizzard said it all felt right.

“We’ll see. I enjoyed it last week. I like the camaraderie with the staff and the players, and the communication level,” Grizzard said of calling plays on the field. “And then I just want to test it out in a good environment here [in Pittsburgh].”

Grizzard added that he still might call Week 3 of the preseason in a coaching box and quickly “figure it out,” as far as making a decision on the regular season.

Smart call by Grizzard to see how he feels about the sidelines with a loud crowd in a hostile environment. Most preseason venues are quiet, but it’s always intense in Pittsburgh.

I believe this guy may be the best OC Mayfield has had. Coen was good but he coughed it up a couple times last year at bad times. This Grizz is going to be more aggressive at all times and that’ll fit our offense to a T. I think the team is ready for game 1. May take the defense a few games to start their swagger but that’ll be fine. This offense is going to be elite.

  2. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Grizzard is going to be The Giants’ head coach next season.

  3. Fred McNeil Says:

I would let Grizzard win a few games before I made him a head coach. Do I believe he will? Maybe. Probably. 17 games to play first. I’m loathe to count my chickens before they hatch. Do I have faith. Yes. I call it faith. Joe calls it hope. Explain the difference if you can. No. I don’t believe God cares about football. He will not involve himself. That was the main thing I hated about Lovie Smith. The only coach I hated more was Ray Perkins. That megalomaniac actually thought that he himself was God.

i don’t care where he stands-we are going to be great again on Offense. It’s the Putrid Pass Defense that we are all waiting to see if they can actually make some plays and get off the field on 3rd downs. Go BUCS!!

If Grizzard out performs Coen as OC in an exceeding way this season, he need to hold steadfast next year to sacrifice one or two more years as OC then let Bowles ride off in the sunset to retirement, then Grizzard take the helm of the team to another level. Bowles will give it up in one to two more years. Like BA, he’ll do some consulting for teams in need of guidance. With our current team, Grizzard can mold n grow the team out of his own image, take a snippet from Bill Bilicheat. This will lay to rest of us looking for a new OC each year.

  6. Hodad Says:

Optics is everything. If he wants to be a HC one day he needs to be seen by owners on the sidelines actually coaching. You can’t pull players aside from the booth. You can’t lear at a ref for a bad call, shouting out a few choice words. Inter acting on the sidelines, he needs to be seen.

  7. George R Says:

I don’t think we lose a 3rd OC in 3 years. people will figure it out Its not the Xs and Os it Jimmy’s and the Joes. The Bucs offense will make any OC look good.

Again, these guys are going to know a helluva lot more football than myself, but using last week as feel for staying on the field or going in the box is a misstep. Grizz didn’t scheme a very complicated game plan, and whether he needed to or not, he didn’t have to adjust his game plan as the game wore on. Where are you going to be able to focus the best when things fall apart and you’re needing to adjust?

I think there’s something to be said for having a bird’s eye view of the playing field. Whether he has a trusted agent in the box, much like Canales had Brad Idzik in the box when he was offensive coordinator here or whether he’s up there himself.

There’s a lot of distractions on the field, lot of energy, some good, some not so good, especially for a first time play caller. And perhaps the box is a bit overrated, since offensive plays come in before the defensive configuration, but I’d say there’s still a lot take from having that perspective. Whether it’s simply seeing the same WR open almost every time or seeing a defenses timidness/ tendencies on side of the field, or perhaps how soft they could be playing in the middle, etc. where a coordinator could exploit. Was Grizz the guy in the box for Coen last season? I’m sure someone was up there.

  9. Enkd Says:

He’s hot another couple of years of coaching offense before he even sniffs a HC job, no team would be so desperate to take him on next year.

I have a feeling JL will try to keep this guy around especially if he kills it this year!!!

    LFG BUCS!!!!!

    Fire dem CANNONS

Ray Perkins was no megalomaniac. Where’d you scare that one up, Fred McNeil? He actually personally answered fan mail. Not that he got much. He had to coach lousy Bucs teams under Hugh Culverhouse back during the Dark Ages. I sure hope the OC merry-go-round is over. 4 OCs in 5 seasons stinks!
