Classy Move By Kyle Trask

August 6th, 2025

Bucs backup QB Kyle Trask.

Joe understands there is a blue-and-orange wardrobe-wearing segment of Bucs fans that think Joe’s a hater.

Yes, Joe is referring to the diehard Kyle Trask fans. They think Joe is trying to run Trask out of town for the heinous sin of not ignoring Trask’s bad passes.

Funny thing is, Joe doesn’t ignore his good passes, either.

Joe always liked Trask — shoot, Joe applauded the team drafting Trask so he could learn behind Tom Brady and prepare for It’s-A-Bucs-Life after Brady. Go ahead and check Joe’s (free) archives.

Sadly, for whatever reason, even into his fifth Bucs training camp, Trask doesn’t appear he will ever get over that hump to be a solid NFL starter. If the Bucs thought he could be that guy, they never would have signed Baker Mayfield for peanuts.

Joe likes Trask. He’s a good dude. And he pulled a classy move yesterday after the Bucs signed NFL veteran starter Teddy Bridgewater, who just hours before was head coach at Miami Northwestern — where once upon a time he and Lavonte David were teammates. Bridgewater guided Miami Northwestern to the state title last year.

And before all the paperwork was official and the I’s dotted and T’s crossed, Bridgewater was hanging out on the Bucs’ sideline at practice with Mike Evans and, of course, chatting up his long-time pal David.

At one point, as you can see in a Bucs’ Instagram video below, Trask showed what kind of guy he is. With Bridgewater on the sideline, a guy who could (keyword: could) push Trask down the depth chart, Trask walks up to Bridgewater and offers his hand in respect.

Class.

No, Trask has not had a good training camp. Part of that very well may be because it sure appears the Bucs’ backup offensive linemen (not including Charlie Heck) have looked awful. Poor Trask is running for his life about 25 percent of the time.

Joe isn’t sure how any quarterback canprogress if there are dudes in his face that often. At least when it comes to pass blocking, Bucs fans should wear out a rosary, hoping Tristan Wirfs’ knee surgery is the last time a Bucs starting offensive lineman has a health issue this season.

Either that, or the Bucs’ pass rush is a whole lot better than anyone anticipated.

  1. Daniel Dream Says:

We’ve got a great backup WB with Trask. He’s always been ready when called upon and he’s super valuable in the film room and strategy sessions which is vital for a backup QB. He brings a lot to the team abd we know if he’s needed we can count on him to keep the ship steering in the right direction.

  2. First Last Says:

I’m surprised that Godwin is at practice. Is he there every day?

  3. Hodad Says:

At least Trask can run for his life. Good luck if Teddy has to do the same. Both Trask, and Teddy were free agents this offseason. The Bucs could’ve easily signed Teddy instead of Trask, but didn’t. Bucs also could’ve brought Teddy in at the beginning of camp, when Pratt couldn’t suit up. Now with three preseason games to go, and only 3 QBs, they sign Teddy at the 11th hour. If they wanted this guy all along, they certainly waited a long time to pull the trigger.

  4. Bee Says:

    Hodad

I agree. Also, I’ve never heard of a QB getting better at being a starter while practicing mostly with the backups and never starting a game. You don’t have to be a Gator fan to see the media covers Baker and Trask differently.

  5. Joe Says:

I’m surprised that Godwin is at practice. Is he there every day?

Yep. And Wirfs. And the rest of the walking wounded.

  6. MJ Says:

he’s standing a football field away… man trask has long arms LOL
how is bridgewater going to fit those dreads in a helmet looks like he should be singing in a reggae band… cool dude stoked… does he smoke a lot of ****
    bucs sign rohan marley too?

  7. MJ Says:

trask could always play fullback LOL …dude is huge and quick on his feet

  8. Christos Says:

    Jamaica Jamaica
    Jamaica Jamaica
    Welcome to Jamrock
I think there is too much buzz about this move that I dont understand. He is not the player he once was.
Is he better than Trask? Probably
Does that say a lot? Not really

    Go Bucs

  9. Hawk Says:

Did Bridgewater bail on his team (Miami Northwestern)?

  10. RedTop588 Says:

I really think the Bucs pass Rush is a lot better then people think I believe Braswell will really shock people this year same thing Jason has said an I also think we have a new rookie to keep an eye on now that walker is done for the year an that Roberts they have a really solid rotation man if Walker wasn’t out for the year this pass Rush would have been even scarier then it is now

  11. Beeej Says:

Bridgewater actually got into trouble coaching that team, he bought them a LOT of stuff/equipment. Anyhow, the district suspended him

That knee injury was a crying shame, his career was completely ruined by it

  12. Joe Says:

That knee injury was a crying shame, his career was completely ruined by it

    Yeah it was.

Wasn’t Bridgewater’s destroyed knee injury a non-contact injury in training camp?

  13. JimBobBuc Says:

I’ve always advocated that Bowles put Trask into the end of blowouts so he can get some real experience. No matter who the QB2 is, I hope Bowles gets them into some games for live reps, before the sad day when Bake goes down.

  14. Beeej Says:

Yup Joe, was in camp with Vikings following his 2 great seasons, been bouncing around ever since

  15. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

Trask is probably going to study with Teddy to bring him up to speed with what we’re trying to be on offense.

  16. matthew a veal Says:

well, if bridgewater does as goog or better with our offensive line we will know trask is the problem

  17. ballwasher61 Says:

This was a smart decision, too many people trying to make something out of nothing. Not a condemnation of Trask, he has practiced better with the first team, go figure

  18. Kenton Smith Says:

JimBobBuc, no need to be a Debbie Downer on this fine August Hump Day. It’s time of year when even Slimy Saints fans believe that they have a chance to be good. “before the sad day when Bake goes down”. That’s not nice to say man. Any player in this league is a snap away from a major life event. I do think that was a needed addition in our QB room yesterday. And you’re right JimBobBuc that it would be nice to get good leads and more snaps for the backups. Not just QBs. But I’m gonna take the positive approach and say we’ll be good no matter what. Of course it’s easy to be positive when you’ve got a team as good as ours is. And I ain’t Whistling Dixie!

  19. Leopold Stotch Says:

I remember now, about Teddy’s knee. Apparently it was so bad players were puking. As far as I know, absolutely no pictures of it were taken or leaked. It was baaaad.

  20. Billy Bob Bubba Bo Baggins Says:

What knee did Bridgewater injure? In a video yesterday, I saw him walking with a gimp on his left leg

  21. Beeej Says:

“In 2016, during a Minnesota Vikings practice, Teddy Bridgewater suffered a severe knee injury, specifically a dislocated knee and a torn ACL. The injury was described as “horribly grotesque” by his surgeon, Dr. Dan Cooper, who had never seen a knee dislocation so severe without nerve or vessel damage. There was even a brief fear that amputation might be necessary. ”

    The Injury:
Bridgewater’s knee dislocated, causing multiple ligament tears, including a complete tear of his ACL.

    Severity:
His surgeon described the injury as the worst knee dislocation he had ever seen without nerve or blood vessel damage. It was so severe that the knee was described as “hanging on by one ligament on one side like a hinge”.

    Initial Outlook:
The injury was initially considered career-threatening, with some media outlets even reporting a risk of amputation.

    Surgery and Recovery:
Bridgewater underwent immediate surgery for multi-ligament reconstruction. Dr. Dan Cooper, the team’s physician, performed the procedure in Dallas, TX. He also had a second surgery two months later due to stiffness around the knee.

    Return to the Field:
Despite the severity of the injury, Bridgewater did return to the NFL and played for several teams after his recovery. He even reflected on the injury, stating that he uses it as motivation.

  22. Jeffrey Becker Says:

was teddy just pissed he got suspended for being nice to his kids? otherwise, does he even want to play this year?

  23. Geno711 Says:

It’s always so odd on here when fans suggest Joe has been unfair on Trask.

When Joe was publishing on days he felt Trask did better than Baker, the Trask fans use his posts to suggest Trask should have been the starter

When Joe posts that Trask looked bad on plays, he is the hater.

The simple truth is Baker is better.

  24. Henry Says:

Is Bridgewater a transgender? Whoever told him that the spider nest hairdo looks good on him is not his friend. Personally, I don’t see him beating out Trask. Too short. His value is…..I don’t know maybe a seasoned voice in the QB room?

  25. Joe Says:

    Thank you Geno.

  26. Bojim Says:

    Insurance. Trask is QB2.

  27. MelvinJunior Says:

I really don’t see the issue with the Uber rides and food. They didn’t have “Ubers” back in the ‘good old days,’ when coaches, parents, and other “volunteers” used to take kids to and from practices, & etc. EVERYDAY, while then running through the Mickey-D’s drive-thru after practices, or hittin’ up the local Sizzler, or pizza buffet after games. And, he was NOT an actual “employee” of the school district, to begin with. HE should’ve been APPLAUDED for helping those kids out like that, out of HIS OWN pocket (even tho he should’ve kept his mouth shut about it on Twitter or any other public forums). It’s a shame. That Miami Northwestern team is really good. On a side note… I follow A LOT of HS Football/Recruiting, especially in the state of FloDuh and all of the perennial ‘National Powers’ (and still VERY pissed over Spectrum getting rid of our local Tampa Bay and Orlando HS Sports Channels, after the Brighthouse buyout), but PLEASE DO Go And Check-Out The “G-Girls” – The Miami Northwestern Dance Team… They have a NATIONAL following, and are quite the treat.

  28. MelvinJunior Says:

Another side note… That Miami Central vs Miami Northwestern game (and crowd with the “G-Girls” LoL) this year at “Traz Powell” will be INSANE. I hope SOMEBODY picks it up if ESPN hasn’t already!!!!

  29. Paratrooper Buc Says:

    Geno711,

Spot on. Joe has been objective and tries to be positive about Trask. I liked Trask in college but too much time has passed and he hasn’t developed. If Trask was being held back he could go to another team but no one is knocking on the door. Baker was the better choice.

  30. ReeeBarrr Says:

Never realized LVD and Teddy were teammates, or forgot.

Makes a lot of sense. Couple of cool bros

  31. LakelandBuc Says:

Kyle Trask don’t mind carrying the clipboard for a few millions

He may be a lot of things, but he’s not stupid

  32. Capt Ahab Says:

Joe says Trask is not having a good camp. Another local publication is singing Trask praises, says Trask is having a great camp. Guess it’s in the eye of the beholder.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The way they’ve handled Trask is horrible. He could have developed into a pretty good QB had he been handled right, even if he wasn’t the named starter.

For one thing, in games when we are well in the lead and in the last quarter, they could have put him in for more than cleanup duty. Let him take a couple risks in a real game situation.

But, I fear it is too late now. This in one of those cases where poor QB development (possibly due to so many OCs) have ruined a developmental QB.

  34. Seminole Bill Says:

If Trask is not going to be anything more than a third-string QB maybe it’s time to get some value for him in a trade. He could be a backup (or even a starter) on a team with QB needs.

  35. heyjude Says:

Trask has been true blue throughout. Yes, all class. He may enjoy being right where he is. Will have to see what happens. I believe his contract is supposed to run out after the 2026 season.

  36. Mac Says:

Insults aren’t very nice, especially when they’re inaccurate and malicious. –Joe

  37. LongtimeLkldBuc Says:

Spurrier brought in Brian Schottenhiemer when we had Wuerffel, Dresser and Doug Johnson. It wasn’t to play QB. Trask didn’t start in his senior year of HS and sat four years on the bench at UF. He is prepping for his next career.

  38. sunny Says:

capt ahab: if he was having such a fantastic training camp, why would they
bring in bridgewater and say that there will be a competition for the backup qb position?

seminole bill: there is no trade value for trask. they have already shopped him around and there were no takers.

  39. Aqualung Says:

The Great Trask Suppression Conspiracy lives! Coaches GM and players would rather reduce their chances of winning to keep Kyle down.

    It’s genius.

  40. garro Says:

Trask is not as bad as some on here suggest. He would have been replaced twice by now it that were the case.

    Go Bucs!
